    I appreciate how respectful everyone has been in the comments! Thanks for engaging and sharing your own thoughts on this "issue"!
    One last thing I want to say about this Kickstarter is that QT is, in fact, playable (at the time of writing this comment). As such, the devs have revealed the next, previously hidden, stretch goal. For $260K they'll add a secret boss fight...
    Unless this fight is going to be incredibly animation intensive and borderline "cinematic", there's no way that adding it should be a stretch goal THAT high. Not only that, but...this is basically a Sonic game. Is anyone really clamoring for a Boss? Rollin' Rascal is focused on 3D platforming and high-speed action - gameplay that doesn't easily allow for a fun and engaging boss fight. I'm not saying it's impossible, but just not easy to pull off.

      Just noticed your new comment here. So I'll give my opinions about bosses in Sonic games. Well I gotta be honest, me & other Sonic fans don't normally see eye to eye on this topic. I LOVE boss battles in games in general, including on Sonic games.Fact is I argue it is the reason in lore why you are even there typically. In these kinda games the character is on an adventure to stop the villains, not just to run around random locations for the hell of it. Personally I play games for the intended narrative experience.

    • @crossflux971
      @crossflux971  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I play games for a similar reason too - the narrative. That being said, I usually want my narrative to be told to me THROUGH gameplay and not just through exposition or whatever. I'm playing a video game, not reading a book or watching a movie.
      For me...Sonic bosses are meh at best (and usually really bad) but I can see why some people like them. I just don't like how Sonic's moveset in both 2D and 3D are about making forward progress and doing it quickly, but usually bosses are static enemies that have a certain pattern. You end up waiting around for the bosses to expose a weakness of some sort and rinse and repeat.
      The Sonic Frontiers bosses are great examples of good bosses though!

      @@crossflux971 Maybe ironic to say but I don't find Frontiers or the Unleashed Werehog bosses to be good examples of boss battles when it comes to the gameplay. I like using the physics based gameplay to attack the enemies in a semi-pinball style combat. Battling by using a ton of fancy fighting game moves is kinda boring to me. I also gotta be honest by saying I don't relate to the hate for "needing to wait to hit something" style bosses... you don't see that being a big deal with fans on other platformers, yet it is a big sin with Sonic for some reason? Neh, I don't feel it, I like battles that require little strategy instead of merely hitting the boss tons quickly to nuke it.

      @fumetsusozo I like boss fights that aren't a different style than the rest of the game. So like, in Sonic, you're constantly on the move. So a good sonic boss should let you stay on the move. A boss should be a test of certain mechanics.
      That's my take at least.

    I find it strange that Q.T. had her own separate stretch goal for changing her colour, like what if the game only made 200k? you can colour Rascal but not Q.T.? also why was she so high in price? i feel she shoulda been a lower goal, but perhaps she was so high to entice people to pledge the money?

      That's what I'm thinking. Having the Color Customizer be a separate goal for her seems a little...eh to me. I'll give them the benefit of the doubt, however, and say that since QT has different patterns of color on her model, perhaps she did need a unique customizer in order to apply the colors to her model.

    Had a similar chat some days ago with a friend on these subjects. I'll just comment on the playable Q.T goal as it stood out the most to me. As you said her design & model are already clearly finished, which means there is only few things left to consider they need to work on. Unless they are planning to give her unique gameplay... which I highly doubt... otherwise she most likely will be little more then a reskin for her brother, with maybe a bonus skill on her if lucky. Meaning they mostly only need to work on her playable animations... also my own experience as a game dev tells me that character reskins are pretty easy to make. So when you consider all of that... then her absurdly high price goal number is probably just bait for extra money.

    • @crossflux971
      @crossflux971  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      So it seems that they DID reach the QT goal and some of my misgivings were confirmed (while others were disproven). The Devs have said that she's to have unique gameplay mechanics - so that's good! However, she'll play the same as Rascal in multiplayer stuff...
      Regardless, one singular character with a few exclusive abilities doesn't warrant a stretch goal 4x the size of the minimum asking price of going through with the project, itself.

      @@crossflux971 Oh I didn't hear they reached her goal! Guess I should had checked today. Well good to hear she isn't just a reskin... But yeah it is still like you said, a single extra playable character shouldn't cost anywhere near the number they asked for... the only thing that could get close to being worth that amount would be if she had her own separate storymode with unique dialog & bosses, ETC. If they are doing anything even close to all of that, then I have nothing to really complain about.

      Indeed. Not only that, but they're supposed to be adding a color customizer in the base game. So you can already change Rascal's base colors. If these skins are special, then that most likely means the customizer will be a bit lacking.

  • @whitegemgames
    @whitegemgames 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

    I’ll agree that some of the prices of the rewards are questionable and a lot of the stretch goals are kind of underwhelming, but I think that’s a combination of them being realistic on what they believe they can deliver and trying to raise as much as they can for the project. In the end a kickstarters job is to secure funding and entice people, so while it would be shitty to sell skins at that price for a full release, I don’t see issue with offering it as an incentive even if I personally wouldn’t pay that much for it. I also think it’s likely QT was put so high not because of how difficult it would be, but because they know people want it and to give them something desirable to aim for. Lastly most of the rewards like early builds, designing things for the game , and costumes are commonplace for kickstarter projects. I don’t think your wrong to be put off by how the kickstarters been handled, I’ve had some similar thoughts as it went on, but a lot of the criticisms in the video can apply to most kickstarter games. Maybe I’m giving more credit and benefit of the doubt then I should, who knows.

I know that they're just trying to get as much money as they can, but I still see their methods are scummy. If a triple A company did the same things they're doing, people would be calling them out. I just don't see why a small indie team should be exempt from criticisms.

  • @larkison9140
    @larkison9140 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

    I don't know if I agree about QT, but that's mainly because of a lack of the Kickstarter's clarity. Yes they do have the 3D model and have her in the game, but we also don't know how different they are planning to make her mechanically from Rascal. While it's possible that she's literally just the same as Rascal with different animations, (in which case, I agree with you) she seems to have her own personality, so for all I know she could have a completely different moveset, physics and/or skins for multiplayer, and that would take additional time and resources to develop, code and test. I would help if they could be more clear on what they intend for the playability of the character.
    When it comes to making your own NPC, level, etc. I can understanding charging so much for it. If I were to have somebody I don't know pop in and tell me to put things in my game, I wouldn't want to do it unless they were paying me a lot for it. The unreasonably high price is probably to make sure that they get AT BEST one or two people on board for it and don't find themselves swamped in requests, in which case they're basically just doing commission work. So not liking the idea of it or thinking it's a fair price is natural.
    I agree about the other stuff though and I don't mean to overly defend the project. I haven't backed it because I'm crazy broke right now (but even if I wasn't, probably would have just gotten the standard edition for a digital copy of the game at best), and I don't really understand the business of kickstarter or costs of development (My local currency isn't the dollar). But this was just my uninformed take on it. I have hobbiest experience in game design and that's about it.

    • @crossflux971
      @crossflux971  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I totally see what you mean with the "help develop things". Not being swamped with all the requests is something to consider. As I said in the video, I would never consider having a tier like this for one of my own games, but if the devs are OK with some community involvement that's one way of handling it.

    • @larkison9140

      @@crossflux971 I wouldn't do it myself either, but I've seen it happen before. It was a tier for Undertale's kickstarter too, and its why that game has that one secret boss that is MIRED in controversy, as well as that Spider boss (of whom I have forgotten the name of but has that really cool song) - and it's an excellent example of both the best and worst case scenario that comes from somebody paying to make a character in your game.
      But the thing about Rolling Rascal is that it is very clearly targeted towards the Sonic the Hedgehog fanbase, which is a very passionate community who deeply want Sega to listen to them about the franchise's direction and love making fan games, mods and OCs. From an advertising standpoint it is probably in Rolling Rascals best interest to put out indication that they'd be happy with a fan's creative input, even if 99% of fans don't want to/can't pay through the nose to make it happen. Though I may also be over thinking it at this point!😬

    ?? you do know a lot of wip games you have to pay to become a beta tester...why would they hand out free pre release versions of the game, That they will constantly receive as well? As well as them getting a digital sound track, painted figure, and artbook as well. You don't have to pay for beta tester because you're not missing out on anything. Its just there for people who have the money to spare and for those who want to play the game sooner. It's 100% fine for it to be there and thats what the demo is there for, to give you a small taste of the game to come. there would be no point to a demo if there was a FREE beta version of the game it just isnt logical, and makes it seem like you just want beta tester, but dont want to pay the extreme amount of money. Being a beta tester means it is their job to help report any problems the game may have while it is still under development. Which means if it costs money to be a tester, then you are paying to do work in that case... which is worse then somebody trying to get free labor. It is a bit abuse of power to make outsiders pay to help work on their games.
