I know, right? A perfect breakup song. Not bitter, or wanting, just, sad.. Its feelings were raw and solid. Like showing how love works, that sometimes, there'll be a point in your life that you love a person but the person simply doesn't love you anymore that the only thing to do is let go.

"...one foot after the other, 'til black and white begin to color in..."
Stunningly accurate description of what it's like to deal with a depressive episode. It's as though all life and color have been drained out of your world. You move forward because you know you have to, but there's no joy in anything. When you're in the thick of it and you can barely remember what it feels like to be happy, it's so difficult to keep moving forward. You can't concentrate on anything beyond the next step... and then the next... and the next.
Thankfully, nothing lasts forever, (even when the minutes feel like hours,) and ever so slowly the color comes back...

When she got to the last verse "You can have Manhattan, I'll settle for the beach" - I got so choked up and this isn't the first time this beautiful song has me in tears... I remember back in 2016 I was in a very bad place mentally and emotionally and I found this song when I was on TH-cam listening to all the Sara Bareilles songs one Sunday afternoon and I found this one and I was already in tears during the first verse... Such a powerful song! She is not only an extraordinary singer and multi instrumentalist, she is also one of the best songwriters of our generation! She tells a story and I can picture every lyric that she wrote - she is one of my biggest musical inspirations!

I've never heard Sara sing a note off key and her timing is incredible. What an artist. Just so pure. Wish there were more artist like this able to crack through to the mainstream. Talent like this deserves to be heard and it so often doesn't. Hopefully Sara starts a trend. We need more like her.

Still one of my favorite songs to date. I personally think this is one of her best works. Let's all remember she wrote the lyrics of this song while placing herself in the shoes of her boyfriend who had to let her go so she can have a career in Manhattan. I guess that's why you feel so much pain in this song.

    • @carr0760
      @carr0760 10 ปีที่แล้ว +17

There's actually a series of 'making the record' videos for this album and for this particular song you can see that she was crying while recording it. (Quite understandably as she had just broken up with her boyfriend and this song is written from his perspective). So, that's how it's possible that on this particular song she sounds better live!
Though, I do prefer the live arrangements of this than the studio version....hate the horns.

The first time I heard this song was live at her concert in 2012 just like this video. She started by saying “this is a song I wrote about a person who we had to end things because of the distance”. I’ve never been so drawn in by a song in my life. I also had just ended a relationship one of us in NY the other one by a beach. I just broke in tears 🥺 in like the best way. I just let all that stuff go that day. "Manhattan"
    You can have Manhattan
I know it's for the best
    I'll gather up the avenues
And leave them on your doorstep
    And I'll tip toe away
So you won't have to say
    You heard me leave
    You can have Manhattan
I know it's what you want
    The bustle and the buildings
    The weather in the fall
And I'll bow out of place
    To save you some space
    For somebody new
    You can have Manhattan
    Cause I can't have you
    Ahhhhh
    You can have Manhattan
The one we used to share
The one where we were laughing
And drunk on just being there
    Hang on to the reverie
Could you do that for me?
Cause I'm just too sad to
    You can have Manhattan
    Cause I can't have you
    And so it goes
    One foot after the other
Til black and white begin to color in
    And I know
    That holding us in place
Is simply fear of what's already changed
    Ahhhhh
    You can have Manhattan
    I'll settle for the beach
    And sunsets facing westward
    With sand beneath my feet
    I'll wish this away
    Dismissing the days
When I was one half of two
    You can have Manhattan
    Cause I can't have you

I placed this video in a playlist and and put the playlist on shuffle. When this song played, I wasn't watching the video so I really thought it was live. This is why I love this woman. She would be awesome with or without autotune and THAT is artistry.

I was at one of her concerts about a week before this was shot and the crowd was the same there. When she sings this song NOTHING else matters.

Though my life is not perfect and I sometimes regret things that I leave behind, the best part of my life is that I can cry, feel deeply, and appreciate the music like Sara's.

Sara is one of my biggest inspirations since I was 10 and no one ever knows how much she means to me! (: Thank you, Sara. For giving me the motivation to NEVER give up on life, or my passion for music. Everyday is getting better and better.

"Holding us in place is the fear of what's already changed." "Manhattan" is maybe one of the saddest songs ever written. And I said that about "Gravity" when she released it. This performance, though. I could feel all the broken pieces vibrating violently inside.
