Nice that you're getting all the dark fantasy/horror reads for the season that are also working so well for you!

All the spooky reads. We have also been watching Agatha all along and it is so fun. 🦬🦬🦬

So glad you're reading is going well! I started Too Like the Lightning a few days ago, and while I'm not that far into it yet, I'm obsessed already. I would never have heard of it if it wasn't for you, so thank you for that!! Haha, regarding Ava Reid, I feel like the odd woman out when it comes to her latest release, Lady Macbeth. All the negative reviews didn't deter me and I ended up enjoying it a lot more than I thought I would. Juniper and Thorn sounds intriguing, too! Happy (fall) reading!!🍂

I seriously had no idea that Victor LaValle book even existed! I just read The Changeling and that was such a wild ride, it's stuck in my brain, for better or worse lol. Also re-reading The Way of Kings and excuse me but how did I not enjoy Adolin on my first read?!?! Loving every single moment of this book right now, it's giving me that "I don't want to do anything but read" vibe and I MISSED that!
Enjoy the lovely fall weather 🥰🦬

Ava Reid has always been a tricky one for me. I did not like A Study in Drowning at all which most people LOVED, then Juniper and Thorn was mid for me, but then I LOVED Lady Macbeth...which most people seem to hate. 🤷‍♀️ So I'm so confused! But enjoy those Fall colors while you can! I'm in Michigan and also soaking them in, at the expense of my reading most days! 😂

I really like the cover for that new Mariana Enríquez book, very pretty. Also, I just realized that The Devil in Silver reminds me a bit of Bad Brains. The stories don't sound similar at all, but Bad Brains also has a devil in silver, so there's that, lol.
I said last week that I didn't know what I'd pick up in order to see if I can find a great horror read for me this month, and I decided on Carrion Comfort, by Dan Simmons. I love Hyperion, and one of my favourite stories in it was the Priest's, which was horror-y, so it seemed like a good call. Fast forward to today and, because I was busy this week, I've only read 18% of the book, and it is LONG and we're almost done with October AND my November already had too much stuff in it, so maybe not the best choice in the world lmao. But hopefully I'll be able to finish it in the first few days of November. And I have some thoughts on the book, there's some stuff that I found a bit weird (for example, one character was retelling a very traumatic thing, and he was kinda describing it as a play-by-play caster would? with some dramatic flair to it, and idk, that felt very odd to me and didn't really seem to fit the character I'd seen up to that point. But I'm open to being proven wrong by the book, of course, just initial thoughts). The book is otherwise pretty interesting, though. And it is one of Dan Simmon's first works, written a few years before Song of Kali and Hyperion, I think, even though it was released in 1989, the same year as Hyperion. And GODDAMNIT, I just looked for Song of Kali on Goodreads and found out it's also horror but, like, 600 pages shorter, so I could have gone with that instead lmao

🦬 I loved Lone Women! I haven't read anything else by Victor LaValle but you are convincing me I need to prioritize them.

I needed something light for my brain to handle this week and ended up falling in love with Frontier by Grace Curtis. Total space western Firefly vibes and the book feels like a series of short stories as the reader bounces from character to character.
Definitely going to check out some of those horror recommendations next week!

I am both cautiously curious and nervous about your description of Frontier for my taste. If only cause "reminds me of Firefly" has rarely worked for me in book form, but I am so glad its connected for you!

@@LiteratureScienceAlliance it’s more Firefly setting than Firefly tone, if that helps! It’s also super short, so not much of an investment if it doesn’t click 😅

🦬🦬🦬 Not sure which books I will focus on this weekend, but I hope to finish at least one book. I have ARCs and library books, so I have lots of choices.

Yay for another good reading week! ☺
I have been struggling through The Gilded Wolves by Roshani Chokshi 😢The plot feels kinda all over the place to me. It is supposedly set in Paris, but I don't get any Paris or French, for that matter, vibes. I haven't been to Paris, so I don't have a proper comparison, but this feels like it could be set anywhere. The magic system feels overly convenient - whatever the characters need in the moment - hey, there's a magic gadget for it! Without any prior mention. Many things in general don't make sense. But the characters are the worst offenders. They feel uncomfortably close to the Six of Crows characters, but lesser and watered down versions. And at least some of the representation is not very well done. As a mathematician, the one that I can speak about is of a mathematician character. Not well done, imo.
I would have dnf-ed it, if I was not reading it for the r/fantasy heist prompt and I haven't already dnf-ed a few books for that prompt 😅
I have some chores to do around the house in the next few days, so I hope I'll be able to zoom through it on audio in that time 🤞
