Driving in Heavy Rain on the A30 - with Storm the Irish Draught Sports Horse

- Meet Storm! He's a big lad with a big heart, who was with us for training over the summer... believe it or not, looking at the weather in this video!
Listen to Barry talk about why getting out in the rain whenever possible is an important part of our horses' training, as the puddles, running water, noise on the road, getting sprayed by vehicles and headlights can all make a difference.
As it happens, whilst out at home we hear that Storm hasn't managed to avoid his namesake and got drenched another time - fortunately nature provided us with the opportunity to make sure he took it all in his (large!) stride!

I love watching your videos, they are balm to my mind, relaxing, calming and a joy. Your ability with these sensitive animals is a wonder to behold.Thank you.
The speed of those cars passing is scary!
Interesting to see horses reaction in the heavy rain and the tyres making that, whoosing sound..all around him.
Thanks Barry. For sharing your horsemanship with us.
'Storm In a Teacup' 🥰 He couldn't have had a better start to his working life.
Looking forward to hearing all about little Teacup's big adventures :)

Little teapot is made of glass
and as big as the wold.
and is called Internet.
Only its owner is inscrutable.
His (voluntary) teapot residents,
he knows better than anyone
and most themselves
because everything is made of
oneway-look-through-glass
and all the present is written down in the book "Past"
with the smallest particles called electrons.
So from up to down everything, also from the past is seen,
and from the down to the up not a bit.
"Storm", a symbol of spirit and wisdom,
is the only one who doesn't live in the glass house
and would never voluntarily become a movie star.
The conclusion:
Storm's good example can save all of us
from .... .
Quote:
"All modern technology first liberates
and then enslaves."
(Nicolas Gomez Davila)
Example:
First you could choose between a motor wheelchair (car)
and a horse wheelchair.
Now soon everyone will need a car to even find a job.
or: 20 years ago, an 18-year-old decided to buy a smartphone.
Today not only he
but even his 9 year old daughter has to have one.
And what that means for the child... .
(So dit he decided 20 years ago
what his future children will have to have,
what they never had to have befor?)
Find grandparents
trying to get more attention from their grandkids
than their smartphones.
But they do anything
but fulfill this valuable duty.
Fact:
Almost everyone
" drives" in the wrong direction,
is a ghost rider.
I would have been in the hedge, or in the next field. Horrible conditions and Storm was a hero to drive through it all with minimum fuss. And you have nerves of steel, Barry.
Thanks for the reminder that rain changes the sounds around. There are also always variables we wouldn't think of, like the slosh of water from the truck's wiper blades. Another good reminder that odd carriage of the body can be a health glitch. (For you, here is a Babylon language problem. You said tush the other day, regarding the Connemara and I finally understood you were referring to a broken off tooth. Now today, you say Tush again, and now it is in reference to new teeth coming in. Here, my original perplexity came from that Tush is an older word, regarding a humans rump.) There is a chiropractor in the U.S., The Animal Cracker, who also does all kinds of animals. It is very endearing to see the relief animals get. Horse work has been fascinating. There you are thoroughly enjoying all the training "obstacles" going by while on the road. My best to all.
Ah, in the UK referring to dentistry in horses, "tush" is the canine tooth.
Barry, I have to agree with you about checking the poll, neck and shoulders around the point it joins the neck. Storm is fairly locked in position of found tolerance for the pain. There have been TH-cam videos on chiropractic techniques for horses. I wouldn't mind if you checking for eye sight/blindness and hearing. There was a horse that lost an eye to injury and comprehension cocked the head as to get as much forward visible advantage as possible. Good luck sir.
A horse and a human can compensate for pain in various ways . only x rays will tell the truth .in my experience chiropractors are useless
What a little beauty. Shows great courage in himself and trust in you, lovely how he raises his head when huge wet noisy juggernaut approaches from behind, as if to say: “can you see this Dad? Is this alright?’ And because you show calm and no reaction to the ‘monster’ he thinks, oh, ok, must be alright then, and just trots on, swinging his head happily trotting along , knowing hes safe in your care, and trusting himself with his decisions to be brave, grow and learn in your hands… I bet he got the best cosy big rub down, fresh hay, delish food and cosy nest to snuggle in, when he got back to his stable, where he could contentedly dream about his adventure in the rain with you, bless him… and you. Joy to watch as always, thankyou for sharing.
He did indeed - a nice wash off and some good quality haylege and a nice dinner (hard feed!) later on!
Storm is handling. the rain and the noise well thanks to your great guidance and training great trainers at horse drawn promotions
A superhuman achievement
not to be overlooked:
All horses can distinguish which words are for them
and which are addressed to us. ---
Imagine you are in very noisy traffic,
a quite new situation,
physically working,
an escape animal ---
and 3m behind you
one speaks in Russian
and you absolutely have to distinguish
which apply to you and which do not.
And you have to anderstand Russian. ---
And the person and the Environment is still little known to you. ---
A miracle happens constantly just bevor you
and you just overlook it as such.
"It`s o n l y a horse." ---
To interpret . . . A horse is not a machine.

There are two words,
mostly used in a religious context,
that describe Storms doing:
devotion and obedience of faith.
"Storm" obeys because he trusts/believes
the human Mr. Hook
and that with devotion.
He no longer helps himself,
but lets himself be helped/guided
by Mr Hook
throuh his obedience of/in/with faith.
Mr Hook
the crown of creation, horses,
the creator of obedience of faith
and devotion in horses.
So Storm keeps safe
on the "Highway to death".
My goodness, how fast is that traffic going past. What a good boy ❤
I wonder if they feel the pressure wave coming off the trucks and large vans?? They can push a car over a bit, so it makes sense that they would feel them, and maybe the pressure effects their ears. I know I don't like the feeling in my ears. Not about this guy, but just wondering.
It's a very fair assumption that the noise is only a part of the sensory experience of heavy traffic passing close by at speed. I live yards from a 30mph zone on a B road which can get very busy. Traffic of all sizes leaving our village can be exceeding 60mph passing my property and the sensory overload is off MY scale if I'm daft enough to be trying to do any maintenance at the time. Horses are much more sensitive than we humans.

Correct.
And even more:
1. The trembling ground, the vibrating air,
when a large tractor rushes past, heavily loaded with sand.
2. The smell and squeak of a passing pig truck.
3. The smell of fresh or decomposing animal carcasses
from a butcher truck or Rendering Plant.
4. The hiss of a truck air brake.
5. Truck driver
who honk or go full throttle
because they don't accept a horse on (their) street.
6. A drone crosses the street
and makes a noise like 5000 bees.
7. Someone shoots the horse from a hiding place with an air gun.
(He who has no joy seeks malicious joy.)
8. A big dog jumps at your horse
9th ...
I believe that horses, not every horse, can be trained for all of this.
(This would have to be paid for by the vehicle tax, in a just world, )
But if only one gets angry at you and your horse and poisons it,
then nothing helps. ----
Nicely done!
Barry hope huw keeping well butty
