BAD MOVIE REVIEW : The Creeping Terror (1964)

- For this week's bad movie review, we're looking at what is always considered one of the worst movies ever made. It's The Creeping Terror (1964). A very low budget, science fiction horror movie with atrocious production values and ridiculous special effects. The only movie I know that tries to pass off a giant rug as an alien invader.
In California, a spaceship crashes. Comes out a giant rug monster which eats people.
This movie was played in Mystery Science Theater 3000 and believe me the whole episode turned this mishap into something that was hilarious. My favorite line was when one of the victims from the dance was eaten "He died with his bowling shoes on..."
Yeah, MST3K has made some very bad movies easier to watch... sometimes...🤣
Welcome to the decade of the drive-in theater ... film fodder for teens to park in a lot, not watch a movie, and do, um, other things.
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
To be fair, there were some classic during the drive-in period, like Night of the Living Dead.
@@awfulmoviereviews6792 agreed
@@awfulmoviereviews6792 Oh absolutely, one of my favorites! All I'm sayin' is the period was filled with schlocky, lowest-budget, cheaply made, grade Z "horror" films for the sole purpose of playing at drive-in theaters.
@@haf2C Yeah, I get what you mean. Just trying to make a quick buck off of the drive-in market.
You got it!
Suggestions for the future:
Horror High.
The Gate.
The Blob ( 1988).
Happy Birthday To Me.
Final Exam.
Slaughter High.
Bloody Birthday.
Beast of Blood.
Dead and Buried.
Mansion of The Doomed.
The Pit.
The Willies.
House by The Cemetary.
Pieces.
Meatcleaver Massacre.
Alright !
@@kaylaturnis9486 … that Blob remake, is pretty good.
0:51 - But if it weren't for these dreadful drive-in "classics" from the early-to-mid 60s the Cramps and the Misfits would have had nothing to write about early in their careers...!
Oh yeah, you mean that punk rock band which named some of there songs after old horror movies ?
@@awfulmoviereviews6792
...and the other songs were about doing awful things to women.
@@DanielRuiz-oq9cy Oh great

A little bit of this, a little bit of that, and a whole lot of something else, makes the
music we all like. Absolute degradation for a specific gender sells records and has
the feel good place for a lot of folks.....yep, Punk is cool.
BOY HOWDY !! do I remember this cinematic Cluster foul up ! Back about early 70s , the tv station WOR ,channel 9 , New York , decided to play the movie just after midnight. Despite I had better things to do ( like going to bed ) I sat and watched till the end just simply to see if it got worse... it got worse , much worse!! Most interesting, mid-way through the movie, the picture was stopped so an on air announcement could be made , apologizing for the poor quality of the film and they promise not to ever run it again... unfortunately only weeks later it was rerun again !!
Fortunately that was the last time I heard of it !!
FOOTNOTE: in the book ; Golden Turkey Awards, long out of print , there's a photograph showing the creature mounted on the back of a pickup truck with signs promoting the films release, which means it DID have a theatrical release of some kind , also of interest , the afore mentioned photograph has in the background a theatre showing the movie CLEOPATRA , an another movie that lost big that year !!!
Man that is hilarious, the TV station actually apologizing for the poor quality of the stuff they're showing. That's something. That says it all about the movie.
As for the release in theaters, I know there were attempts at marketing it, but there's no concrete proof that any theater actually picked it up. And I think I know why... But that's just a theory of mine. 🤣
@@awfulmoviereviews6792 yes ... I also have a theory , NOBODY THOUGHT TO PRESCREEN THE MOVIE !!!
seriously, I truly believe channel 9 just had nothing else to run in that time slot , later , again, had nothing for the next week ran it again !! As long as I remembering late night movie watching , barely a month later the same station ran MONSTER A GO GO followed a week later by THE CRAWLING HAND , both just awful ...
Again, I'm sure nobody screened these films either .
And keep 'em coming!! 🙂🙂🙂
Man oh man, nothing but awful movies. The channel must've been desperate to fill in the gaps...
Oh don't you worry ! I will ! Stay tuned ! 🙂🙂
2:55 mins: Ah 1964...a good year for the British Invasion and crappy movies when the hero with his Brylcreemed greasy hair and guitar thought he was "El Kabong" and could neutralize the Shag rug creature with just a mighty swing of his Fender Stratocaster, thus saving the Beautiful bob haired damsel in distress. At least the monster here indiscriminately chowed down his victims and didn't carry them off to his cave. Only thing missing was his side kick "Baba Looey". Probably saw this on Chiller theater back in the day 60 years ago. Man, those were the days!
“El Kabong”!!! I haven’t heard that name in, like, forever! Great Quik Draw Magraw reference!
Yep... May the hootenanny leader rest in peace...
"And the raven said : never more !"
Bit of trivia, the actor playing the scientist was the Marlboro Man model on the cigarette billboards scattered around the highways and cities in days of yor. I love this movie for it's sheer awfulness, can't get enough, and is on my short list on my movie roster...
Also the drunk guy in the dance hall scene looks remarkably like David Carridine (although it's been established that David Carridine was more of a pothead)... 😉
That's interesting, I didn't know he was one of the Marlboro Men. As for the character looking like David Carradine, I don't remember catching that scene ahah. And yes I agree, the term "sheer awfulness" is perfect to describe it. What an awful movie !

Oh yessssssss !! You're right, it just came back to me right now. I did tell myself it looked like David Carradine a bit. Thanks for reminding me ahahaha !
The story I heard was they had a really great monster costume and it was lost in shipping. So they threw the rug thing together overnight. Never knew that it was not released in theaters. Makes sense!
I heard that story too. Not only did they lose the monster, but they also lost the dialogue... what a mess that movie is ! But yeah, a film's got to be absolute crap to not even be released in any theaters back in the day. And yes, it is absolute crap lol.

You mean a documentary ? lol

@@awfulmoviereviews6792 check out night of the blood beast great riffing in that episode 🤣
Houston had MANY drive-in theaters. You couldn't drive a mile without passing by another drive-in.
And was this awful movie playing at one of them ?
Thanks. There is a documentary/dramatization movie on youtube, "the creep behind the camera", NOT for kids!! About the movie and it's creators. ❤
He truly was an awful person the guy who made this movie wasn’t he?
Yeah I heard it's a behind the scenes on the making of this disasterpiece. It peaks my curiosity.
Well he sure seemed to have gotten himself into trouble with those legal accusations of fraud and all that... 😬
They clearly had no budget to light night scenes, so the lovers lane is fully packed in the middle of a sunny day.
They clearly had no money for anything, as a matter of fact. 🤣
I think I can venture a social historic explanation for the cluster of bad horror movies in the early 1960s. It was a time when young men and women could find little privacy to 'canoodle' so the cinema was the best place to go to be alone, in the dark, surrounded by lots of other young couples who were so engrossed in their own activities that they took no notice of what they were doing. No one gave a damn about seeing a great movie, but shocks and horrors were a great excuse for the girl to turn scream, become all feminine and need to be embraced by her boyfriend. By this time TV was providing more entertainment and movies at home, so the film going audience, for its own sake, was dwindling.
That's an interesting take. I'll roll with that. 🤣
Oh, I was wondering why this movie was never nominated for an Oscar, also, who is the actress playing Betty Johnson? You know, the girl next to the clothes line, I'm kinda crushing on her.❤❤❤❤
She was a good looking girl, I agree. But I don't know who she is or was. The movie used an unknown cast, nobody even remotely famous.
Now you're talking and this is where awful really applies.
Pull over. Squeal like a pig."This beautiful panel could be yours ..."😅
Yes totally. 💯💯
It's absolute crap.
"The sergeant, more concerned with saving lives than the advancement of science told Dr Bradford to go to hell".
"Pardon my French".
Isn't that from MST3K lmaoo ?
Congratulations. You have achieved inner peace. The movie was so bad, you have achieved enlightenment.
Definitely. I has altered my perception of existence. I can now rest in peace.
There's a lot I could say about this movie, but I'll settle with this..."When you've seen as many bad movies as I have, "The Creeping Terror" doesn't seem so bad". As for the monster, I'd say the monsters in "Invasion Of The Star Creatures" & "Creature From The Haunted Sea" are worse. William Thourlby did confirm that Arthur Nelson had some posters printed. More than likely none of them still exist today since apparently none were ever displayed & it was probably a very small print run.
That's interesting. I must say, I would've liked to see how the original posters looked. Not the DVD covers of today.
And to be fair, I still prefer the cotton candy creature to this one lol.
See THE CREEP BEHIND THE CAMERA for the whole story.
Yeah I heard there was a documentary on the behind the scenes. I'd like to check it out to see what happened.
More of a reenactment, with some real talking heads. @@awfulmoviereviews6792
Yeah, it's far more entertaining. It's how I found out about the movie.
It'll be interesting to see who they are/were. Because the cast is really unknown. They were a bunch of nobodies in the acting world.
Oh fair enough
Yes, I have an awful movie I'd like to recommend: "Don't Go Into the Woods Alone (1981)". It's my personal least favorite movie I've ever seen. It makes its 80 minute runtime feel like 3 hours... at least. I am a Slasher fan, but have absolutely 0 defense for this one. It doesn't even take one minute to realize how awful this movie is going to be.
I can relate, I've seen those kinds of awful movies which make the runtime feel like an eternity, because they are so bad.
I'll put that stinker on my recommendations list! Thanks ! 😁
"An extremely awful movie!" Settle down with the swears, sonny! HAHAHA, I`m so glad you did this!
Dude, there's no shortage of cuss words to describe this abomination of a "movie". One of the worst of the worsts ever...
@@awfulmoviereviews6792 Ya, It`s pretty terrible, I could`nt stop laughing during the sock-hop! What horrible dancing!
@rotterdammer5243 I couldn't agree more man.
Still better than Netflix.
Oh come on, Netflix has got some great shows. 🤣
Perhaps bad movies come in waves, today's woke genre continue to loose money and horrify those who stumble upon them. Im looking forward to the coming decade in hopes producers will return to trying to satisfy the audience.
Oh yeah, so am I. "Go woke, go broke" as they say.
You deserve a purple heart for sitting through this one. Utter Garbae without MST3K.
Have you seen Caltiki AKA Caltiki, The Immortal Monster (1959)? A black and White 'Blob' movie ghost-directed by Mario Bava, I believe.
A big badge of honor. 🤣🤣🤣
As a matter of fact, no I have not. I heard it's a cheap and bad knockoff of The Blob. Surprising to see Mario Bava directed such a thing.
This is arguably the funniest episode of MST3K ever done. So many great riffs for the awfulness.
Agreed. I did also see the riffed version, and it was sometimes hilarious.💯💯
Ironically, now the fish are biting.
🤣🤣🤣They'll be well fed now.
An excuse to go to the Drive-In and fog up the windows of the car.
Lmaooooo, that's a good point.
In the early 60s drive-in movies were still a thing. You might occasionally see a good film at a drive in, but those were the exceptions; mostly they were B pictures at best, and a lot of them were just plain bad. Case in point : The Undertaker and His Pals.
I can imagine that. A lot of people said that in the comments. And I think you're well placed to say it !🤣🤣
Oh yeah, a movie Bob Wilkins would often mention that they'll be playing this as a special treat on Creature features someday. Monster movie hosts loved finding total trash movies to play sometimes, and this was a real classic. How many times i sat through such amazing features as Attack of the mushroom people, Frogs, Night of the Lepus and who could resist The green slime! Some of us grew up on these forgotten cinematic wastes of film, loving the movie as much as the host of the show. I feel sorry for kids who's parents wouldn't let them stay up late on friday nights to see the works of schlock masters.
Well I'm glad I brought back memories for you !
By the way, I also reviewed Frogs.
@@awfulmoviereviews6792 I'm sorry you sat through that, I remember it being amazingly boring.
@Oldbmwr100rs Yes you're quite right about the boring part ahaha
@@awfulmoviereviews6792 Maybe they should have called it "Crickets".

It must have been these kinds of movies that spurred the hippy drug culture. Anyone seeing this kind of crap would have to find another escape rather than movies.
Facts. That's the kind of awful trash which makes people take hallucinogenics in order to escape the pain of seeing such an abomination. Although, the flick feels like it was made by a guy on LSD lol.
This movie should also go by the title Attack of the Killer Carpet from Outer Space that Eats You with Help from you.
That's a very good title man. 🤣
I first saw it on TV back in the mid 70's on "Seymour Presents." It became my favorite bad movie! Great fun.
MST3K did a hilarious job mocking it as well.
Good work, color me subscribed.
I agree, the MST3K episode is one that I saw too, and it was pretty funny. And thank you very much for your subscription ! I appreciate it a lot !
The Creeping Terror. Ugh! You just can NOT take this movie seriously! How does the "Terror" consume its victims? Have victims willing to crawl INTO its ... um, mouth? The narration is ridiculous, especially when he goes off on tangents about marriage and whatever. Anyone not convinced "Vic Savage" actually realized the movie was crap and INTENTIONALLY threw the audio track into the lake before he skedaddled?
All the film needs is the narrator going, "Flag on the moon. What's it doing there?"
But it IS truth in advertising: The film really creeps, and it is definitely a terror! 🤣🤣
Hahahahaha good one ! You do have a point, the advertisement is rather dead on on that one.
And that's an interesting theory you make on the loss of the audio lol.
Thanks for the enjoyable review of The Creeping Terror. It was truly awful. I'll have to watch Skydivers and Red Zone Cuba.
No problem !
Well be careful, those two films are atrocious... (I've only seen Red Zone Cuba).
