Wow, this conversation took some turns that I was not expecting - which mostly led to Kylan and AJ liking a lot more about this album than I thought they might, so I can’t complain. “Up in Houses” ranking so highly with them (I forget which one said it was their favorite track) while being your LEAST favorite track on the album was the biggest curveball. It’s actually my favorite track as well - which is weird for me, because I normally prefer the big rockers that give you the hooks right away, and this one’s such a dark horse pick in that regard. But the payoff is HUGE, and it just keeps on giving even after two different times when it seems like the song should be over.
The comment about the drums being too “small” early in the album surprised me, because my big complaint about “Boone Flyer” and “The Green Rider” early on was that the drums were too maxed out. The cymbals were getting hit almost constantly in certain places and they sounded to me like they suffered from some clipping. I still love both of those songs but I think a “less is more” approach might have worked better there.
Overall, this is either my second or third favorite Falling Up album after Hours. Depends on my feelings about Fangs on a given day.
Unrelated to Falling Up, I laughed when you guys talked about Placebo, because someone in a Facebook music group I’m in made a dumb joke the other day: “Has anyone ever gone to a show thinking they were getting The Cure but they got Placebo instead?”

I I don't think I realized "Up In Houses" is also your favorite on this one. I'm clearly the one who is "wrong" on my thoughts that song...but it's still a great song. I wonder if I need to listen to it on its own more outside of the context of the album to gain more appreciation of it.

@@Ineverglow I mean, it was still a 9.something out of 10? Not even worth complaining about; you clearly still like it a heck of a lot. I don't even know if I could name a least favorite on this album... back when I bothered to rate songs in iTunes, I had 5-starred most of the album and I'm sure there were a few scattered 4s, but in reality they'd be closer to 4.5s... it would probably shock you guys that I have "In the Woodshop" in that lower tier where it's still a gorgeous song, but there are just so many that outperform it for me.
I've often wondered to what degree the story on this album overlaps with lyrical ideas from elsewhere in Falling Up's discography. Particularly the idea of this "mystery house" being a central character and a lot of the action taking place in its different rooms. All the way back in "Bittersweet" on their first album, Jessy sings "Release the gate of beautiful/I am staying down to hide in rooms away/These tears they build me up a house/Then they pour on down and wash the house away." Then there's the album cover for Dawn Escapes, which depicts a house being flooded. Maybe it's less of an "It was all connected all along!" thing and more a case of Jessy having ideas as a songwriter that he wasn't able to fully flesh out at the time for various reasons. Or I don't know, maybe he just likes to write about houses a lot in general. But I definitely think there was more of a thematic purpose to each album from Fangs! onward, and we've heard very direct musical/lyrical links between a few songs across different albums over the years too.

@@murlough23 yeah, I think there’s a good chance it’s all connected. I’m really bad at figuring out all the lore though 😂

@ I have a whole room devoted to it, with lyric sheets and photos pinned to the wall and a bunch of red string linking it all together.
Just kidding, I really only have a vague clue of what it all means and I’m 99% sure I’m just making it all up.
