  • In this oral history Toody Cole recounts growing up with six siblings, changing her name to Toody in high school, and her early attraction to performing. Cole talks about her lack of expectations for herself, how she met Fred Cole, and their subsequent marriage and children. Cole describes their adventures in the Yukon homesteading and eventual move back to Portland where they started Tombstone Music. Cole speaks to her and Fred’s commitment to DIY work and culture, as well as how their band Dead Moon formed and her role within it. Cole talks about the band’s work schedule, disdain for rehearsal, touring, and staging. She discusses Fred Cole’s illness and death and why she no longer plays. The interview concludes with her thoughts on her role in rock history, the visibility of women in rock, what she is most proud of, and the category of women in rock.
Toody Cole is a bassist best known for her work in Dead Moon and Pierced Arrows.

The Women of Rock Oral History Project is a collection of digital interviews and written transcripts, housed at the Sophia Smith Collection at Smith College-one of the oldest women’s history archives in the United States. Started by Tanya Pearson in December, 2014, WOROHP documents the lives and careers of women in rock whose work and careers have been underrepresented or omitted from rock journalism and historical scholarship. With a collection of publicized and accessible primary source documents, the Women of Rock Oral History Project seeks to facilitate a more comprehensive, inclusive, and accurate cultural history.

I saw Dead Moon live in Holland in 1994, I was front row. I shook Fred's hand when he was changing a guitar string and he gave me the old string. 27 years later I still have the string and the entrance ticket.

I happened to find this while looking up Dead Moon and Pierced Arrows live videos since it's the anniversary of Fred's death and I'm feeling mushy. And WOW what a gift this is. Toody is just the coolest and sweetest. About a decade ago I was talking with her after a show here in Milwaukee and vividly remember her warmth and that great laugh. She is just so REAL and right from the start spoke to me as if we'd already known each other. I hope I'll always hold on to that memory and feeling from it.

Kia Ora hello from Aotearoa New Zealand. Hay the first time DEAD MOON came here we turned up to the dog and trumpet Pub we pulled into the car park and there's Fred Toody and Andrew passing a big bottle of something?i walked up to them and asked if i could have a slug on what ever they were spitting out thinking it was some kind of spirit alcohol. Sure said Fred if you want a slug of Listerine 😅 😂 gargling to soothe his vocal chords they were unbloody real down to earth people who were unbelievable on stage

It gives me chills when she tells about Andy's depression about his age. I met Andy at the bar at Dante's at the Green River Reunion show in 2008. Being a fan of Dead Moon I happened to recognize him sitting across from me at the bar and he was beyond GONE. We chatted a bit. I got to meet him. That was cool! He seemed like a really nice guy though he was beyond smashed. Never understood what happened to him or why Dead Moon broke up until this interview here. Whatever the case, it was a memorable show and I feel lucky to have been there and got to meet the drummer from one of my favorite bands (aside from Green River who played that night). That added to everything else that night. It was like the cherry on the cake for me. I feel lucky to have seen Dead Moon live at Crystal Ballroom in 2003. That was a stellar show.

Man.. what an amazing interview!!! I absolutely 🖤 DEAD MOON. It wasn’t always like that though. I first heard them in Providence Rhode Island when I was about 21. It wasn’t my bag at the time, but I truly got into them after moving to PDX the spring of 2007. I took out a bunch of CD’s from the library on Killingsworth. After that I became a true fan. Them and WIPERS. I’ve had the opportunity to see both dead moon and pierced arrows since and have met them all in many occasions. Absolutely wonderful people. ✊🏽🖤

Parents just left you alone and you entertained yourselves so true even for me born 1969 so I don't know when the parents letting you do your own thing by it was happing in1980s great times o pretty innocent fun dropping cat off roof with make shift back plastic bag as para shoot a string on each corner of bag ,or bringing every mattress or into back yard while mom at work and jumped off roof on the mattresses for a trampoline ,catching crawdads and fish and transferring them to ditches or ponds to start a new population in small street and ponds or fish tanks sounds boring but fun I love these guys I bought a package deal in 1987 ? Dead moons 1st LP and reissue of weeds 2 song 45 w/ pic.sleeve for something like $7 -$8 ! From MRR zine and kept up with each new Lp as they came up been fan ever since, I read some of their love story in a book the brewery McMinnimas put out about the history of the crystal ball room, oregon talks lot about weeds and the hip center of 1960s I sure am glad she can speak of Fred in a accepted death tone rather that not being able to speak about him without getting bummed out love you today keep smiling
