Welcome fellow amateur geologists and Minecraft enthusiasts, today, we’ll be taking a look at ten of the rarest gems and jewels found on planet earth! Note: just because it’s found on earth, doesn’t mean it’s from it!

Poudretteite
This mineral was first found during the mid-1960’s in the Poudrette quarry of Mont Saint-Hilaire, Quebec. However, it wasn’t until 1987 that the poudretteite was fully recognized as a new mineral. Even then, this mineral wasn't described in depth until 2003. As stated by several different sources, it’s believed that only a relative few will ever come into contact with this mineral and let alone ever even hear it mentioned.
Grandidierite
This is considered to be an extremely rare mineral and gem that was first seen in 1902 on the Island of Madagascar. It was named in honor after the French explorer Alfred Grandidier who once studied the island’s natural history. Grandidierite comes in a bluish-green color and is located almost entirely in Madagascar, although, there was a clean faceted sample that was found in Sri Lanka. Grandidierite is also pleochroic, which means it's able to absorb different wavelengths of light differently and that results in different colors, such is the same ability with the gems tanzanite and alexandrite.
Painite
This gemstone was first discovered back in the 1950’s in Myanmar by a British mineralogist named Arthur C. D. Pain. For the next several decades only two fragments of the hexagonal mineral were known to exist on earth. By the time the year 2005 rolled around, there were still less than 25 discovered pieces of painite and The Guinness Book of World Records had declared it the world's rarest gemstone mineral. However, that was 11 years ago and since then the origin of the original stones has been found, along with two other major locations that have led to the discovery of thousands of small samples of painite fragments. Even so, they’re still considered one of the world’s rarest minerals.
Ammolite
This rare gemstone can be found mainly in the eastern region of the Rocky Mountains of North America. Ammolite is an opal-like gemstone that is solely made up of the fossilized shells of extinct animals known as ammonites. This makes ammolite one of the few biogenic gemstones that exist, along with pearls and amber. Ammolites weren’t officially recognized as gemstones until 1981 when they were given official status by the World Jewellery Confederation.
That’s also the same year that commercial mining for ammolite began.
Tanzanite
It’s been said that tanzanite is 1,000 times rarer than a diamond, which might as well be the case considering the fact that it can be found almost entirely near the foothills of Mount Kilimanjaro. This is where the perfect conditions lie in order to form the mineral. Like grandidierite, tanzanite is able to produce striking shifts in color based on the crystal’s orientation and the certain lighting conditions. Caltech's geology division states this is because the color variations are caused by the existence of vanadium ions.
Red Diamonds
Did you know that diamonds come in a variety of colors? In fact, diamonds can range from being yellow, brown, colorless, blue, green, black, pink, orange, and red. That’s also the same order of how rare each diamond is classified as with yellow being the least and red being the most. Not only that but diamonds are also the hardest natural substances that form here on earth. Just like the colorless diamond, the red diamond is made purely out of carbon, however, what gives the diamond its red color is actually a deformation of their atomic structure that’s known as a “plastic deformation”. The Moussaieff Red is the largest red diamond in the world among the little known other red diamonds that have been discovered.

Thumbnail is an ammonite(ammolite). Ammolite is a rare and unusual substance that is a fossilized form of the mineral aragonite. Ammolite comes from the placentaceras ammonite fossil, but is extremely rare. The ammonite was an ancient shell that inhabited a shallow sea that covered southern Alberta, Canada between 70-135 million years ago. While various types of ammonites can be found all over the world, it is only in southern Alberta is where the shells fossilized into the bright colors of ammolite.If you like gemstones with provenance, then you're going to love ammolite.
I liked how you qualified red diamonds. Diamonds in general are plentiful, but large clear, well cut diamonds are rare. I like Tourmaline, not as rare as others, but they come in almost unlimited colors. A deep blue or a deep red, fetch thousands of dollars per carat. I have personally cut some very nice watermelon Tourmaline, it is just a beautiful stone.

Great video, keep up the good work. You may want to include The Bolivianita only found in South America in the country of Bolivia. Ametrine, also known as trystine or by its trade name as bolivianite, is a naturally occurring variety of quartz. It is a mixture of amethyst and citrine with zones of purple and yellow or orange. It´s not one of the most valuables but it is rare. Thanks again keep up the great work.

Pretty sure there's more painite out there than that. I have an inspected and registered faceted sample of it and I'm just an average collector. Mine's 3.66 carats, eye-clean (VS), and cost $3,928.26 USD when it was purchased in 2009. Although, that was a gift and is by far the rarest and most expensive gem I have. But still, I also have quality samples of tanzanite, black opal, alexandrite, and muscovite. Can't be that rare if I can afford them haha.

I'm surprised that you did not include Unheated Burma Rubies on your price list. A 4 ct Unheated can be in the; $35K -$45K /ct. wholesale. Flawless Unheated can range into the 6 figure plus range. Larger stones have sold for; >$1M/ ct.

I bought a quart bottle of opal rough while in Mexico for twenty bucks. Most of the rough had flecks of opal. But a piece of rough about the size of half a walnut had a 6mm by 10 mm black opal imbedded in the matrix. I took the piece to several jewelers and lapidary shops and none of them would work with it because of the difficulty of working to remove it from the matrix without destroying the opal. I keep it in a small clear plastic box in mineral oil. The opal has an intense black,green, red color and is beautiful even in its unpolished state.

For anyone who wanted to know more about the thumbnail, it's ammolite, a type of opalized fossil. It isn't that rare, but the specimen is pretty big.

I would like to know the hardness scale on these gems. Some of the very valuable stones can be brittle or soft. Which means great care must be given when wearing it or choosing the setting.

Grimmie _nebu my mother has a black opal pendant from oz and I’ve got to say it’s the most beautiful piece of jewellery I’ve ever seen the colours are amazing in it.
Black opal from Lightning Ridge and some also from Cooper Pedy, diamonds from the Argyle mines in northern western Australia, and Musgravite from south Australia. We also have very good quality sapphires and rubies from the central gemfields of QLD and also around Inverell in NSW. Some very good ones also have come from a place in the Atherton tablelands far north QLD like I have in my collection. ( They are not for sale.). Also red diamonds re not that common at all here in the diamond mines of WA, they are only found on a very odd occasion. There are sapphires, rubies and diamonds in sth east QLD which I've found. A location that I and one other person keep to ourselves since we found it.( there's no record of this place either in any documentation in the QLD archives and Mines Dept records. The sapphires are gem quality as are the rubies but the diamonds are only industrial grade.

what you see as decor is not Jade. And the really valuable type of Jade is actually Jadeite from Burma. What you see as decorations is either fake jade or nephrite. You should probably educate yourself on it
@@Cammy6969 Jades are very common, Jadeite in the other hand is a little bit rare not because it's hard to find, it's because chinese loves hoarding it so the price gets higher. it's not even worth a penny, chinese love overpricing things, jades are one of the gemstone overvalued, it's so ugly

There are several reasons Diamond is so highly valued.
It has one of the highest brilliances - meaning it reflect and refracts more light than most gemstones. It is the hardest natural substance known to man. Large perfect stones are super rare. So combine these three things and it is no wonder it is expensive.
I agree about perfect stones but, in general, the price of diamonds is kept artificially high by De Beers, who control the supply. Diamonds are far more common than most people believe.

It's hard to believe Jadeite can be worth so much. My grandfather found a Jadeite stone about 75 years ago that weighs close to five pounds. It's a lime green to a yellow green. It's kinda funny how a stone can hold such a value and be in a rock garden for nearly a decade. But worthless if you don't have a buyer

What about twinned crystal benitoite (star of david benitoite) with only 12 sample found since the discovery of the gem in the early 1900s. Another thing adding to the price is that gem quality benitoites are only found in a 40 acre plot of land in the Diablo mountain range of San Benito County in CA, USA

I had a rare specimen of jadeite that was about 3 carats but i lost it in a fire. Going back to that spot tomorrow, im gonna be there a while digging in till i find it. I had no idea it was so valuable.

There is actually a new gem find from Arizona and it comes from one known location in the world - the beautiful Sonoran Desert. It's called Sonoranite and it is just being introduced to the world! There have been a few videos uploaded to TH-cam that just start to show the unique properties of this new gem.

Jade is not even that rare
Jade is actually extremely common... It's used for nearly every decorative thing in china and probably other parts of asia.
Madao do your research first. All Jadeite is Jade, not all Jade is Jadeite. In fact virtually all Jade in circulation is really Nephrite. While high grade examples of Nephrite are still valuable, they are worth only a fraction of the value of Jadeite. Jadeite is Extremely rare to find, especially as a high grade stone. The Chinese have many beliefs surrounding it causing a demand that hugely outstrips the supply. These two factors cause this particular gemstone to have an unbelievably high value.

Todd Cooper Its a different form of Jade. Typically the Jade you're referring to, is the common, less exspensive and mass produced form. I guess it could be compared to a regular diamond -vs- a yellow, blue or red diamond.
