How a Car's HVAC System Works

  • Here's how an automotive heat, ventilation and air conditioning system works.
The HVAC system in a car is situated under the dashboard and controls the heat and cooling systems, as well as the defroster.
The AC system consists of the compressor, condenser, drier, evaporator core and expansion valve, the latter two of which are under the dash and are demonstrated in this video.
The heating system consists of the engine, water pump, and a heater core, which is under the dash.
The blower motor, usually situated behind the glove box will blow air from outside or recirculate air from inside the cabin. Air flows past the evaporator core where it is cooled, before heading to the HVAC mixer.
The mixer determines if the air is to be heated or left cold. It also directs air to your face, feet or the defroster. This is done by mechanical flaps inside the housing.
This video goes into details of the thermostatic expansion valve, evaporator core, recirculate actuator, blower motor, temperature sensor, blower resistor, flap actuators and the heater core.
Dashboard removal is necessary in order to access any of these components.

There is simply no other channel that packs as much educational, intelligible information into such a concise and quick format. Back when I was a kid (many decades ago), my old man had a 57 Beatle with split oval rear screen that he was very proud of. The Beatle of course had an air cooled engine so no engine coolant to go through a heater block to heat the cabin. Instead some of the heated air from around the engine was captured and push through pipes on the floor of the car to each side and if you wanted heat, you would just manually open a couple of small vents that were built onto this pipework. Problem with that design was that if the exhaust gasket failed, you'd get exhaust fumes blowing into the cabin. I wonder how many people got seriously sick or died, driving Beatles around in winter. Great channel...Love your work. Keep it up.

Thanks for the high quality content! My thoughts on all the parts coming out of the dash.. damn that's a lot of work. Thankfully only my blower motor, TXV valve and Evaporator are in the dash within the same black plastic housing. (mine was a pain to get out.) I have new drier/receiver coming as well as a new TXV valve, though mine is ok, i figure what the hell.. it's a cheap replacement (not OEM). like < $20.
