Real talk: the Musou series is what helped get me into the history of the periods they cover. For instance, the big reason that Nobunaga was demonized for so long was that he burned several Buddhist temples that were violently opposed to him, and not only raised armies of their own against him, but conspired with other clans and forces to try and overthrow him; since it was common practice to have Buddhist monks in administrative positions, like record-keeping, they wrote the history in a way that portrayed Nobunaga as a bloodthirsty despot, when in fact he was no more brutal than any other daimyo of the time (Takeda Shingen, for instance, had criminals boiled alive). The Dynasty Warriors series is based off of the Romance of the Three Kingdoms, a novel written in the 14th century (which is considered one of the classic novels in Chinese literature), which in turn was a romanticized account of the last few years of the Han dynasty (starting in 169 AD) and the Three Kingdoms period that followed (which ended in 280 AD). Almost all of the characters in the series are based on historical figures, with the few exceptions being famous characters from Chinese folk lore. The novel has had a huge cultural influence in east Asia, which is part of the reason the games do so well in that part of the world; it's sort of similar to the tales of King Arthur in Anglo-Saxon culture. The novel portrays Cao Cao and the kingdom of Wei as schemers and usurpers, while Liu Bei and the kingdom of Shu as virtuous and the true successors of the Han dynasty; this is likely due to the fact that, at the time, China had recently come under the control of the Mongols, so the author tried to draw parallels between the northern kingdom of Wei and the northern invaders, while portraying the southern kingdom of Shu, ruled by a distant relative of the Han emperor, as noble and honorable holdouts against the tyranny of the Cao family. Contemporary historical records, and in fact many more modern records, show that Cao Cao was a brilliant general and administrator (and one of the three great poets of the period, the other two being his sons Cao Pi, who was the first Emperor of Wei and Cao Zhi), while Liu Bei was somewhat unscrupulous and known for turning on many of his allies when he found it convenient. Oh hey, and judging by the crest on his coat, Toukichi is a chibi version of Kinoshita Tokichiro, aka Toyotomi Hideyoshi, one of Nobunaga's best generals and the guy who finished uniting Japan after Nobunaga died (and then left it in a state where it was ready to collapse back into civil war when he died).

The Jackie Chan conflict was said to be resolved until early 20th century when the great Jackie Chan's health started to go into the decline. The Chinese Government knew that if Jackie Chan dies nation wide panic will erupt and China will die with him. So, the Chinese Government decided to save Jackie Chan's soul and to put into another body. The Government uses the ancient Chinese technique of Nintendo DS data transfer and moved the Jackie Chan soul into a synthetic body made of Chinese takeout boxes and Kung-fu. This synthetic body is the Jackie Chan you currently see today...

The War of the Three Kingdoms was an actual war and, based upon information gathered from that time, was one of the deadliest wars in human history. In later years however a romanticized version of the events of the war was created and titled "Romance of the Three Kingdoms". The characters in "Dynasty Warriors"/"Musou Warriors" are based more off of the "Romance of the Three Kingdoms" versions than the actual historical figures.
Fun fact, Sun Tzu ACTUALLY said we should just lame it out. Most of his teachings were about how to NOT go to war, or how to shorten periods of war using his tactics. Sun Tzu is basically Frisk, if you think hard about it.
You want to hear how awesome Zhuge Liang was? He was around during the Three Kingdoms Period and at one point he and his small army was surrounded in a walled city. Now the opposing general, Sima Yi, had faced Liang before, so he knew how clever Liang was, but he outnumbered him ten to one so what could go wrong. So Liang's gambit was to implement something now known as the Empty Fort Strategy. Liang opened the gates and sat down playing a lute near the fort's entrance. At seeing this, Sima Yi thought it was a trap so he and his army retreated, resulting in Liang's victory.

Samurai Warriros costumes are also coming to DOA next week. -I'm not sure about the specific design, but Toukichi is based on Toyotomi Hideyoshi.

Actually, the original US Dynasty Warriors was known in japan as Sangokumusou. Dynasty Warriors 2 was in Japan Shin Sangokumusou. Hence the subsequent number discepancy - every sequel in Japan of DW is actually a Shin Sangokumusou game. Also, and while the original Dynasty Warriors is more of a Soulcalibur-ish fighter unlike the subsequent Hack & slash games in the series, most of the weapons are movements, as well as designs, are pretty much the same. Zhao Yun has not changed much from his original incarnation. Heck, the subsequen games also pay homage to the original in one regard - dueling (that, to me, is why DW 4 is one of the best games in the series - despite the repetitive and overly similar nature of each game, DW 4 had them duels, and also choices thata ffect what missions you might get later in the game, hence it had some replayability)

It's just that in the context of Japanese history, where the military classes ruled the entire nation in various points, "将軍" also has additional meaning as a generalissimo.
It's not about being accurate to history. It's about being accurate to the now. "Shogun" and "Jiangjun" are words that we use every day. That's all I wanted to say.

You're wrong here. Japan did get this game. It was called Sangoku Musou (Unrivalled Three Kingdoms). What happened was when the 2nd game changed the format to a hack and slash, it got named Shin Sangoku Musou (True Unrivalled Three Kingdoms). Subsequent games then followed the Shin name and gut numbered from there. The english titles did not introduce the word "True" in the name for the 2nd entry, instead numbering the sequels straight away. That's why the japanese titles are one behind. The "Shin" is basically acting as a "plus 1". Get your facts right.
So I just found out that Toukichi is a parody of one of Hideyoshi Toyotomi's names Tokichiro. Also, why does the description say that this game is Warriors: Legends of Troy?

Dynasty Warriors literally has the best soundtracks I've ever heard in any video game
"This is why our numbers are one higher, Japan didn't get this as the first Dynasty Warriors game." That's not necessarily true. In Japan, Dynasty Warriors released as Sangoku Musou. Then the army brawling game we all know of as the series is Shin Sangoku Musou. It's still the same series, the numbers are offset because they just slapped a 2 on that game over here. It's like if Street Fighter Alpha didn't have Alpha in the title and they just kept going with numbers.

You're wrong here. Japan did get this game. It was called Sangoku Musou (Unrivalled Three Kingdoms).
What happened was when the 2nd game changed the format to a hack and slash, it got named Shin Sangoku Musou (True Unrivalled Three Kingdoms). Subsequent games then followed the Shin name and gut numbered from there.
The english titles did not introduce the word "True" in the name for the 2nd entry, instead numbering the sequels straight away.
That's why the japanese titles are one behind. The "Shin" is basically acting as a "plus 1".

DW series are awesome. Especially the music. For me DW3 is still the hardest game and Lu Bu in 3 was OP if you first saw him in the Hu Lao Gate.
