History
Planet Patrol is a classic game released in 1982 for the Atari 2600. The game was developed and published by Spectravision. It was part of the second wave of games that tried to capitalize on the success of Defender, a popular arcade game at the time. Despite being an early title for the Atari 2600, Planet Patrol managed to impress with its gameplay loop and graphics.
Scenario
In Planet Patrol, you are tasked with patrolling your planet around the clock, both day and night. Your mission is to locate and annihilate enemy fuel depots. As you navigate your ship, you have to dodge enemy fire and destroy their spaceships. The game features day and night scenes, which add to the challenge and variety of the gameplay. During the night missions, everything becomes much harder to see, providing a different kind of challenge.
How to Play?
The gameplay of Planet Patrol involves several stages. In the first stage, your spaceship, located on the right side of the screen, can move up and down as you fly to the left, shooting at larger, red enemy ships and dodging smaller, blue missiles. You must avoid shooting the black ship; instead, you should dock with it to refuel later. At the end of this stage, a black ship appears, which you must dock with in order to land and refuel. After docking with the black ship, you then need to destroy the enemy fueling depots and dodge the mines when the depots are taken care of. Once refueling is complete, the player repeats the gameplay loop but now the game transitions to night time with the screen only being lit when the player is firing.
