If I recall correctly, the character of Basil Fawlty was based on a hotelier the Monty Python gang stayed with in Torquay who was ex military and therefore used to people doing what he told them to. He was right wing, hated ‘normal people’s randomness’, and was very rude, meaning most moved to another hotel, but John Cleese saw potential and stayed on to observe him.

I'm really enjoying your Fawlty Towers reactions, I've long been a fan of this show, Monty Python and John Cleese. I live in Torquay, England 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 where the series is set and I wondered if you knew it was based on an actual hotel manager who ran a hotel the Pythons stayed in back in the '70s when they were filming their tv series Monty Pythons Flying Circus. John Cleese expressed this as one of his favorite episodes solely for the acting of both the suspected hotel inspectors. Interestingly, he was troubled by the fan favorite episode, "The Germans" because of two bits that didn't work out to his satisfaction; one being him hitting his head on Manuel's pan because it wasn't convincing to him. But on The Hotel Inspectors commentary track, he fawn over both those other actors' convincing portrayals. Also, the cork not coming out of the bottle was a mistake that they stuck with and left in the show.

Fawlty was pretty representative of a lot of small hotels and B and Bs in the UK in the 70s and 80s ......the running of the operation would be so much easier without the guests
