Hi Was a high performance European surfer, however back injury put things on hold for about 5 years. After loads of hard work starting to do a turn or two. However boards don't look much different but they have progressed so much !!! Fins that's another story. Your reviews have been great help for me in board choice and save me money. Just want to say Thanks .
I\'m not sure but ,if anyone else wants to uncover bigger buttocks exercises try Dalz Amazing Bum Discovery (just google it ) ? Ive heard some pretty good things about it and my neighbor got amazing success with it.
Thank you for the tips. Another tip I got to help with bottom turning is to lean and touch the water with your hand. Once you improve your compression try touch water with forearm. Only applies to bigger surf and frontside mind. Back side use leading hand to touch. Small surf its more of a twisting motion rather than leaning.
We will go deeper into bottom turns in future episodes. We only work on couple things at a time in each episode so we don't overwhelm everyone with things to remember.
I was looking for top turn vid first. I'm embarressed, i was not using my arm back to coil up, that means more to me than hearing to twist.. I finally get it. and how important that arm is to winding us up. Thank you!! i can pay 5 bucks!
This vid really helped me out I was trying to do too much on my take off, and not focusing on getting to the bottom and making a turn. But this vid straightened me out. Thanks
You are a very good surfer i an learning off of you i can do a bottom turn i just want to improve. You are helping me follow my dreams what is to be either a pro surfer or a really good surfer thank you!! 👍
Great video, great channel, best explanation for bottom turn ever ! All the words you use make sense - cheers from French California, I fell as one of your community 🤟🏻
Very useful tutorial! Thank you! It's an interesting detail, but I love the precision with placing the cones. Very useful to have standard of measurement of what a turn should feel like and the range of motion it should entail.
Great Noel, thanks for those videos!! I was wondering if you plan to give some advice on foot placement. There's not so much out there on this issue which is critical to perform any maneuver. It would be great to have some clues from you on foot placement. Keep ripping!
I also think that there’s a specific type of bottom turn for every specific top turn. Your doing a really deep separated from the wave in the flats type of bottom turn for that vertical hit. But for cutbacks sometimes the bottom turn isn’t as critical and you project more out into the shoulder rather than straight up into the lip. I feel this is what makes good surfing difficult...not just being able to bottom turn but choosing the right one
Hey Noel - curious how you go about filming yourself in the water? Would be great to get footage of myself to improve but haven't found anything that works well yet. Thanks!
love this Vidoe! One question, do you put your back foot at the end of the pad right after you pop up? I surf small and mushy beach break most of the time and I don't know if I would lose speed when I do that. Thank you
If you want more precise turns then get that foot all the way back. If you are comfortable with moving your back foot around to gain speed and move it back quickly to do sharp turns then I suggest doing that especially in small mushy waves. If your foot is more forward on your traction pad and your turns feel sharp enough in the small waves then keep it the same to maximize speed. If you find yourself bogging through turns but surfing fast.... then you might want to adjust that a bit with moving your back foot further on the pad .
@@surfnshowreviews7777 Thanks for your reply Noel! I usually put my foot on the very front point of my traction pad when I pop up and I feel my turns are not sharp enough. So maybe I should put it in the middle when I pop up, right?
Darren Lin Pop up and practice getting it all the way back for now so you can get used to sharp turns. If the waves are fast then scoot it up a bit.... but you gotta get it all the way back for epic turns.

I'm waiting for your frontside 360 tutorial. It's so counterintuitive to turn into the wave going frontside. I usually make the first 180 by releasing my skegs and then flattening my board out again, but then my skegs usually don't re-engage into the wave and the wave goes under me.
One tip that might help is riding a finless board. They're a lot of fun and doing a 360 frontside feels more natural than backside nd it's really easy it'll get you used to the motion.
What kind of board/review is that @ 2:17 with the orange bottom??? Liked the way you flipped it for Goofy footers. (Another sick informative vid!) 👊🤙💪💯

Great instructional video, Noel! Do you put your back foot all the way back on the tail pad on the takeoff or adjust it before hitting your turns? I tend to be front footed on the takeoff and been struggling with moving my back foot back far enough to hit those quick beach break sections that jump out at you right after the takeoff. Also, when taking off, does your back foot land on the board first or your front foot, or both at the same time? I wish you can talk a bit about the movements/ adjustments you do in between turns down at the bottom to maintain speed and drive (movements at 5:29' before compressing into the bottom turn). Double pump bottom turn, maybe?
Yuno mi I usually adjust my footing to the need of the wave or maneuver I want to do. If the wave is fast from take off then my back foot is up in front of my traction pad then I move it back to hit the turns. If the wave is slower.... then I will drop in with my foot back all the way to hit a solid bottom turn. Not sure about which one of my feet hits the board first. I think they hit at the same time. I will pay more attention to that next time I paddle out.
Why not simply create the clip for regulars and then make another export of the clip flipped for the goofy footers but keep graphics un-flipped. And release each video as goofy or regular. Sometimes feels a bit repetetive for me. But worldclass anyway. Just a thought :-)
When is it that your back arm is in front of you and even touching the water with the palm when doing a bottom turn? Is it when the BT is really deep? In your snap video you say the back arm has to be behind you to coil up, but you see a bunch of surfers having it in front of them before hitting the lip
Thx Noel, your videos are super helpful. I have a question, not sure if anyone else experiences this, but too often I slide-out on my frontside bottom turns ( backs foot slides out, fins give = face plant), especially when the waves are good. Unfortunately, I dont have any video but I wonder what I am doing wrong. I definitely feel the intense toe gripping. hahah Do you think it is a matter of not going into the flats enough and trying to bottom turn in a more critical area? Any insight would be much appreciated. Thx man! -Chris
Hey Noel! Great videos, these series are amazing! I loved the way you really structure the movement and go step by step, the thing about the amount of weight we should put in each leg was gold! Learning a lot. A question: Since is very difficult, while surfing to understand if we are doing things correctly what we should watch for when doing correct or incorrect frontside bottom turns? For example, should we fill some projection to the top of the wave, no speed loss, etc. it’s not an easy question, I know.. Thanks a lot and keep it up!
Doing a solid bottom turn you will notice more speed coming out of it and going into your tops turns. I suggest you become a Patron and watch the whole series. We cover everything as we go deeper in each topic.
Good tips man, I’ve got a weird question, I’ve wanted to get a surf skate to improve on technique, only problem is i am a goofy surfer but a natural skater, I’m assuming this would be counterproductive?
I think it would be great.... I would practice on a Carver for understanding. One thing is knowing what’s right.... it’s another thing to feel it and make it a habit. Use a Surfskate to feel and practice proper technique then translate that in the water even if you skate Natural and Surf Goofy Footed. Leading to shift your weight from front to back will translate well. The mind is powerful and it will adjust in my opinion.
Learn to sit down over your back foot on your backside bottom turns. Grab a Carver and go skate a little bank or bowl and wok on sitting down over your back foot.
Hey Noel have loved all your series and thanks for the replies to my questions. If the wave gives you time to go to the bottom and do a deep bottom turn so you can surf vertical in the pocket then you don’t want to look down the line. Now if the wave is really fast then you might not have time to look down and make a deep bottom turn and surf vertical in the pocket.
@@surfnshowreviews7777 thanks so much for the two replies. Noel, will this series also cover backside bottom turns? I really like your vids, by the way. Keep 'em coming. Oh, and thanks for the mirror imaging for us goofies. I really appreciate it.
Back arm must be forward(speed generating) when going down the wave, so you can(must) throw it back(from forward position) when doing the bottom turn thus increasing bottom turn projection. Then when you reach the lip you can(must) throw your back arm front again, powering your turn and facilitating the tail pivoting in the lip. Back arm proper use can better your surfing like no other thing. So, get up on the board, put your back arm forward until you reach the base of the wave, pedal energize, throw your back arm back(opening your chest) to do the bottom, then throw it back front to help pivot your tail in the lip. this is surfing. Backside surfing is right the opposite.
