  • New Zealand Native Plant Harakeke or Phormium Tenax also commonly known as Flax. Probably the most versatile of all our native plants. Harakeke was used for collecting sweet pollen from the flowers, I drink this pollen every opportunity I get. For making cordage this plant was priceless to our people as it was extremely strong and long. The dried wooden stalks smoulder slowly and work well in the art of carrying fire.

    Liquid pollen = nectar.
leaf base glue = Sap or resin.
I also do bush tucker videos, though in Australia.
I love your passion and knowledge, I simply felt like expanding your botanical vocubulary

How many calories in the glue stuff at the base? Also how calories in the pollen/nectar stuff? Cheers.

    Thank you, teacher.
For long time I try to find any New Zealand wild plants which have really eatable roots, which I can use not only for medical purposes but would be able to eat them regularly. And I can't find (my English is not the first language and I can't research really in English).
If you know any of such plants in New Zealand Bush, my friend, can you tell me, please?

Hi, don't eat Harakeke roots. Try Rengarenga.

@@KiwiBushcraftAndSurvival Sorry, but TH-cam makes confused. Before opening your comment I see the name: "Revareva". But when I open your comment I see the name: " Rengarenga". So I don't know which plant you were meaning. Can you, please, write the Latin name of this plant?

Thanks bro, if you are interested I asked Brad Cone, from "Otautahi Tattoo", Auckland, New Zealand to do mine with my whanau whakapapa using the old school tamoko art. Brad Cone is one of the best tattoo artists in the country.

How long does this pollen keep for?

I have no idea sorry Kyle, I have only ever eaten the pollen as I collect it. I have never stored it before.

Why last tense - it’s still in use right?

Couldnt you just bite off the base of the flower and suck it out?

    • @KiwiBushcraftAndSurvival

Some flowers you can do that, I never tried it with these flowers. But if it does work, you could be sucking out more than just the nectar into your mouth. When you tap the flowers, you can remove any of the insects that are also in the flower.

Good video. On the topic of the flower stalks and fire, I have heard that you can light the "pith" or the inside part of the stalk using a spark (done with a flint and steel when people did this years ago). I have tried with a ferro rod and it catches a spark, but it quickly goes out and I cannot get a flame. Do you know anything about this method or how to make it work? Thanks
