I agree with your assessment, the 4Runner is an excellent all around vehicle. I have a 2022 TRDORP that just turned 8,000 miles and it has been flawless. I traded a 2019 Tundra 1794 for the 4Runner and I walked out of the dealership with money in my pocket. This is my second 4Runner, previous was a 2015 Trail Premium. Like this one, it too was flawless. I did install a Pedal Commander in the 2022 and made a world of difference in the response. When the current generation goes away it will be a big drop in quality for Toyota. I do not want a 2.4L turbo engine, if I want that I would buy a Ford Escort. Mark my word, the value of the 5 generation 4Runners will skyrocket
I admire you for you outlook on long term ownership. You have done your homework. A 4 runner is great investment. The re -sale value alone makes it a wise choice.
Picked up my new 2024 TRD ORP with KDSS couple of days ago and had to pay sticker price. Only 1 other 4wd 4Runner on the lot. They are selling fast. I didn't want the 6th Gen with the 4cylinder twin turbo. Thanks for the posting the video.
I appreciate the "we might be drunk, but hey, we will still deliver the goods" camp video - great video! This guy speaks the truth. Many problems with the brand new Tundras, etc. Nothing wrong with the tried-and-true oldies. Love the 4R!!
All of the points you made are exactly why I want the Gen 5 not the upcoming Gen 6 and this is the trim I want.. there are things I want to add when I get one like molle panels, winch & air compressor.. I want to buy a rugged vehicle that will last me 20+ years. This is perfect for everything I want to do.
I agree with you, by the way everyone was saying get rid of the Dunlops….as I drove them 30,000 miles (so far) I see no problems I love them ….then I looked closer…the Dunlops are made in Japan.
I recently traded my 2016 SR5 Premium for a 2023 TRD Off Road Premium. The OEM Bridgestone Dueller HT tires were quiet and smooth but I got rid of them for a more aggressive AT set. Love this model. I'm old school and it reminds me of the International Scouts I use to own. Thanks for the review.
We use an opportunity cost model, the cost of one choice over the other choice. When a recall hits the cost of your time (what you make an hour), add a rental vehicle, your time away from work or family so living with 5th Gen fuel mileage is not a problem. Best, ODTRP
Also there is no timing belt to replace on the 4.0L engine. It's a timing chain. Again, just 1 less thing to go wrong. You can get your 10 years and then some with that 4 runner.....15-20 years. My aunt has a 2000 4 runner with over 300 thousand miles. Still on the road and running good. Long live the 4runner!

Well said. I just upgraded my 2019 GX with the 2022, and paid sticker price. Trade was higher than I expected so this wasn’t a train wreck. Reason for the upgrade was the new infotainment, Mark Levinson system, and folding mirrors on the Premium. These vehicles are over built and among the most reliable vehicles - PERIOD. Total cost of ownership, assuming you keep the vehicle is very low. I plan to drive mine forever because there will probably never be another naturally aspirated v8 of this quality ever built.

Now at 38k miles my AC went out and dealer charged me $1750 to fix it. Prior to that I had a 2008 F150 SC 4.6 and it left me stranded 2x. After breaking down 3x in the past 5-6 years I said I am done with Ford and just put a down payment on a brand new 2022 4Runner TRD Premium with the same wheels and predator bars as yours. Only difference is it's Nautical Blue. My fingers are crossed that I love the 4Runner, because I know I am going to really miss my F150's power (It hauls ass especially on E85 - Flex fuel vehicle) and so many other things about it like ride quality, tech, sync 3, high res camera, etc. It's just an awesome truck. And I fear the 4runners power will feel anemic in comparison and I am not sure how the ride quality and road noise will be either. (Road noise was very low in the F150). But I need something I can count on. Like you, I want to keep it into retirement with no worries just by doing basic maintenance. On a side not I have always loved the way the new 4Runners look. Beautiful SUV you have there.
So: The ride is very quiet the tires are made in Japan as well. We love that and the soft ride especially on bad roads. The 360 camera quality is very good BTW on our ORP. Like ai have said Ford, GM and Stelantis are producing low quality garbage that won’t last 3 years without a problem. There should be a federal investigation!!!!!!! Not to mention the prices being charged backed up by phony feel good tough truck advertisements that 90 percent put there fall for. When was the last time you saw a specific 4Runner commercial?? It’s quality speaks for itself. Beware the fan boys and fake experts on TH-cam we hate them who have no industry backgrounds and are in the pockets of these companies for trips. The 4.0 is excellent and has great power and acceleration is very good. You do NOT need a pedal commander. This is our 4th 4Runner. The power is NOT anemic nor is the truck a dinosaur. The fan boys out there with no engineering nor any automotive work experience at the big 3 click bait the hell out of tropes.
Great review. I have the exact colour truck. Have had it 60 days. The only difference is it’s the Canadian version so it has dual climate control. I drive Suburbans and Expeditions at work and I prefer the 4R for quality over those. The GX460 is a better option than the TRD pro and the off-road is the sweet spot. I plan on keeping this forever and driving it to Costa Rica in about 7 years when we retire down there. Hopefully the mods will be done by then.
Hello Blackwatch, thank you! We agree with your comments. Expect a video soon with Theresa’s new GX460-mind blown what a vehicle. Our best to you, on down the road. Terry Theresa and Piper
Man you completely glossed over the oil cap my friend. The TRD oil cap adds +10HP +15 Torque and +100XP!!! Can’t forget that now!! I just traded my 2015 F2FIDDY 6.$ PowerStroke 58k miles, that I had lifted-8” BDS suspension lift, 38x15.5R20’s Toyo open country MT’s, among many other upgrades, for my new to me 2021 Yota 4Runner TRD Off-road Premium w/XP Predator Package 33k miles. I’m 43 and this will last me the rest of my life and continue on for another as I take excellent care of my vehicles and do all maintenance earlier than Yota recommends. I’m hoping they don’t actually come out with the twin-turbo engine on the 6th gen 4Runner!!! They seem to be goin to the turbo DI engines and they’re making a huge mistake if they do with the 4Runner. It’s a dinosaur and that’s why everyone loves them! It’s got actual buttons to change things like air etc!! They’ll work forever! I love my truck!! 4Runner’s are great and significantly nicer and longer lasting than domestic manufacturers!! Planned obsolescence and money is all most of them care about! As long as it lasts 100k miles they don’t care and they charge over $100k for F250 and up, as well as their competitors, and while they’re great trucks that can tow anything, the emissions kill the modern diesels. My 4Runner is getting 21mpg highway and 18 around town. My F2FIDDY got 10/11 and 14 downhill downwind on the highway!! God bless~
I went with the PRO. Why pay an extra $15k and premium gas for a soccer mom feel in the 460? Yes, I took a serious look at the 460. I’d rather drive a TRD BEAST.
That’s cool, Toyota wins either way. The modded GX460 photos we use in the video looked pretty beefy. I would call a mini van, not GX460 a soccer mom look. The GX460, we have one, looks great
GX460 with v8 ride very different than a 4Runner. Quieter, nicer interior etc. Toyota claiming 15k extra for GX not for fun. Both 4Runner and GX are old and reliable.
The GX is a much better vehicle than that the Pro. Drives way smoother and has a much better interior, quieter cabin, V8, full time 4wd as well as a 6 speed transmission. I’ve driven both many times.
I have 8k miles on my 2022 Toyota 4runner TRD off road premium Barcelona Red with upgraded pro wheels and skid plates. I love this truck. 51k out the door. So im being 100% honest. I'm extremely disappointed in the sound system..for 51k..give me a subwoffer. The navigation system sucks..it does not recognize road construction. I already have several paint chips..I have not even done any major off roading. I upgraded the tires immediately..BF Goodrich KO2's. Nothing man made is perfect. I am still 10000% happy with my 4runner (Christine). Just do your research before you buy. Food for thought..make sure you look at the fine print about maintenance packages. Toyota manufacturers suggest changing oli every 10k miles. If you ask Toyota Master Mechanics..they say change oli every 5k. I will say again..know what your buying..ask questions!!
10000 miles is the minimum recommended oil change, we mention 5k oil changes in the vid. Dr Color Chip works good for your chips. Tire upgrade on the user. Nothing man made is ever perfect, The 4Runner set a standard and is pretty darn close. We see you bought one, congrats
Really like your videos about the off road premium and has made me rethink getting the pro. Question for you. Did you add the KDSS suspension? Did you do any lift/shock mods to your premium ?
Thanks! No KDSS and our change to the TRD Pro shocks is coming. With a lift, we do not want to risk any from differential issues. The ORP with KDSS is still cheaper than the TRD Pro, and for the price of a TRD Pro you can get a Gx460. Best, ODTRP
OK, I am close to 90 days as well. I want you to be completely honest about what fuel mileage you are getting. I live out West and drive 85MPH on the Interstate and I am lucky to get 14MPG. I also only get 14 MPG driving to work doing 35 MPH. I didn't buy it for fuel mileage but I was hoping for more than 14 MPG. I will also say that out on the open road the 4Runner would constantly kick down to 4TH gear when using the cruise control at 70MPH and up.
No worries. Drive with a lite accelerator touch and then start to accelerate. Japanese motors like Honda VTECS get better gas mileage, accelerate better vs. smashing the pedal down. We are at 20.3 MPG using this method (we have restored Acuras). When you start driving with this method you will start around 14.7 and it goes up. Just use a corner lite touch on the accelerator. Number 2 we use 89 octane. Arrow up when you drive for the top summary on center cluster. This works. Finally, replace your OEM air filter with K&N equivalent. Thank you for liking subscribing and sharing. Reset your fuel economy displays and let us know how it goes. Also, while driving we continue the lite touch approach
New subscriber. Great follow up from when you picked it up. I am about 3 weeks out from taking delivery on the same vehicle. Lunar Rock and KDSS was hard to come by but my local dealership had one coming in. Actually had the choice of Lunar Rock or Army Green. Was going to wait for the new Sequoia but I don't think the Sequoia will be available like it was when life was normal. I have owned the TRD Pro 4runner in 2015 and 2016. They really are great suvs that can do a bit of everything compared to others in their class. Resale is amazing also. I like to flip vehicles every year or 2 and it being a Toyota SUV almost guarantees a fair trade in. Especially in todays market. I am giving up my 2020 Ford Raptor Supercab for the 4Runner. Going to take a bit of time to get used to the lack and room and power BUT it's time to make longevity a higher priority if the auto industry keeps going the way its going. The only thing I don't like is the $5k above MSRP you have to pay or the next guy in line will be right there to scoop it up. Thanks again for a great review.
Please call Craig at Fox Toyota you will NOT pay over sticker, especially before you sign. That 5k mark up is wrong. Thank you for the nice comments as well, totally cool. The auto industry has gotten worse day by day. All companies now are woke social lab experiments, Toyota included. Back in the day especially during the Chrysler bankruptcy prices were cut, and quality pushed. When GM needed a bailout no price cuts at all, and GM still has dismal quality and reliability issues across all brands. Ford completely nose dived as well in quality, and reliability across all engines and vehicles save for the Godzilla V8. Leading needs to be taken off the table, and a few class action law suites are needed to fully expose the garbage being passed off a public that can not afford new vehicles. Our best, ODTRP
@@OnDownTheRoadProductions Got a call the other day that my 2022 4Runner TRD Off Road Premium, Lunar Rock w/KDSS was on its way in. Picking it up tomorrow morning. I did not call your guy at Fox Toyota. Unfortunately I had to trade in to get this and out of state that doesn't work well. I will definitely shed a tear or 2 giving up my 2020 Ford Raptor Supercab. Absolutely love that truck but at least they gave me a very good trade in value. This is my 4th 4Runner and I'm looking forward to years of reliability and adventures in the beautiful Southern Utah desert. Thanks again for your videos.
These are great trucks no doubt. I got the 22 sr5 4wd. I should have got the trd off road but did not have any at the time at any local dealerships for awhile. Just tried to trade it in and the resale value on the sr5 are horrible!!! Paid $43k for this new in july this year and the most any dealership is giving me is $32-$35k. Did not realize the base versions lose their value so quickly!!.
@@OnDownTheRoadProductions Yeah, have to try carmax. Carvana quoted me at $30,150 which is a $14,000 loss within 1 year. The used car market is really bad right now.
The question is, in one of the videos, you mentioned that you got a quote for parts and installation of the Fox Pro shocks and the possibility of other items to upgrade a 2023 TRD 4Runner premium to the Pro suspension. Would you be able to let me know what's included in that estimate? Im-looking to upgrade my 4Runner. But dealers here in So. Cal. don't seem to know what to look for. They told me that TRD Pro suspension is Vin-specific. They can only order the suspension if they have a Pro suspension, Vin, to replace.
Not entirely true, all these items are available for order from Toyota accessories and many have upgraded to Fox Shocks and springs. We have a TRD ORP. Yes, Fox Shocks are vin specific to a TRD Pro. It does not mean they can not be ordered separately via Parts. Sorry about So Cal. We have used Jordon Toyota ask for Kaleb, Fox Toyota and BAM Wholesale Auto Parts online. At that point you are just looking at shipping costs. All dealers offer internet pricing. Sorry you were mid-informed by a So Cal dealer. Truly they did not want to help you. We have a Fox Shock video upgrade coming, stay tuned. Mention ODTRP to Kaleb you should 10-20 discount. Best, ODTRP
GX460 is a great truck....but needing premium fuel is a killer. I own four 4Runners (2 - 2019 Limited's, 2019 TRD OR and a 2021 TRD ORP) I was going to go with the Lexus but couldn't get past the premium fuel requirement, no roll down rear window and the wide rear tailgate door swing out that's on the wrong side when your parking on the street. Contemplating a 2023 TRD Pro in Solar Octane. Test drive a 4Runner with the TRD exhaust - my 2021 TRD ORP came with a TRD exhaust - lots of love / hate around the sound of the exhaust. I had to take mine off...for me way to much drone with the TRD exhaust so I went back to the stock version. Check out the 4Runner forums. On towing were you in S4? Also, Toyota recommends 65 MPH max for towing. In general the 4.0l V6 torque curve is not ideal for towing - below 3000 rpm, there's not much there. From 3000 to 5500 rpm, it's full on - the 5 speed trans doesn't help. Our stock gear ratio is 3.73 when folks go to 33" tires this effectively has you at a 3.59 ratio. Toyota designed the engine, trans, gear ratio's for going off road not for long distance towing. I will say I love local towing and using the 4Runner at the boat ramp - the short wheel base makes launching and retrieving a piece of cake.
Joey we truly value input and comments like yours thank you! I did mention 65mph once in the video. We still desire the TRD CAI, will hold off on the TRD cat back the drone would be annoying indeed. Maybe Borla TBD. Best, Terry
I bought my 2020 4 runner during the covid lockdowns and got thousands below MSRP.....it's sad state of affairs to now hear that dealers are upcharging and asking more than MSRP. I would wait a couple years and buy one used. probably get a better deal when the 2024/2025/2026 4 runners are released for sale? 5th gen will be too "old school" for most buyers.
Old School is a trope with the 5TH Gen, the difference between our 2019 TRD Pro and changes made into our 2022 TRD ORP are significant. Very sad about dealers, they never change.
what did you pay before taxes and registration? I am in Dallas and dealers are charging a markup by pushing some unnecessary accessories pre-installed. Can you share your salesperson's contact here?
The 4runner and the Gx are the same vechile with different engines. Their both on the v6 Land Cruiser Prado Platform gx has different engine. Fun fact they starting putting the 4Runner on the Land Cruiser Prado Platform after the 3rd gen 4Runner. 4runner also holds its value better
Debatable on resale values when it comes to the GX460. Was just underneath ours yesterday and there are notable improvements. The GX460 is more than just a badge engineering exercise. The ride and performance is night and day over the 4Runner, especially the brakes. The Prada platform takes a V8 as well, and is excellent. Obviously the 4Runner is a less expensive Land Cruiser.
@@OnDownTheRoadProductions they share the exact same breaks parts, look at the next box of breaks you get it says prado/gx/4runner litterly on the box. Their all the same damn thing in different configurations for the buyer. Reliability their all the same and mostly identical, gx is nice. It's a luxury LC Prado. That's what they designed it as
It's not technically a Lexus just because it is built in the same plant. It is a Toyota. In Cambridge Ontario Canada some of the Rav4s are built in the same plant as a Lexus. Is the Rav4 a Lexus or Toyota?
@@OnDownTheRoadProductions Is it worth getting the KDSS? I'm looking into a 4Runner. I hear that the ride will be better on road which is where it will live primarily, but maybe a little off road because you can. Thank you.
I have the same truck except it’s a 23. Same color, etc. Love it but I have to correct you, lots of plastic in the engine compartment, the whole intake manifold is plastic.
The government plastic engine cover is to quiet noises from powertrain and protect upper components. The plastic air cleaner assembly again a they have been that way forever. There are no plastic oil pans etc on the engine build.
But the trd pro has the best and highest resell value of all the other trims so it more than makes up for its 10k price over trd off road. The trd pro with over 10k mileage will still sell for 10k over its msrp (or however much you bought it for) can you say that for any of the other trims?? NO Trd pro is a no brainer
@@OnDownTheRoadProductions what ? I'm not a troll. Relative to the 4runner, the Lexus doesn't seem like the right kind of upgrade. It is heavier. Power to weight ratio ends up the same, but with worse gas mileage and many more frill features to break. It objectively has worse off-road characteristics outside the box. I'm not saying the GX is trash, nor am I a troll because I have criticism of something you like. None of what I said was untrue. The GX fills a strange niche. It's a luxury SUV that pretends to be an off-road capable rig. Different people buy 4runners than Gx. That being said, the GX is a great street SUV with a solid pedigree. Drive what you like.

The fan boys out there with no engineering nor any automotive work experience at the big 3 click bait the hell out of tropes.
No question this platform would be bigger if we were fake experts, fan boys and entitled schmucks.
Soft touch accelerator and then gradually press down, be amazed
Pro is noisy cabin even compared with Trd Off road...GX is whole new thing, a lot smoother, powerful and drives safe. Handles well.

We love all 4Runners, that Limited still rocks. 👍😎🍻⭐️
Subscribed. Thnx for all the info. Beautiful 4runner
You are very welcome CPPC, we appreciate your compliments.
Sell it at Car Max, you will get way more, even Carvana will give you a great price.
Sell on your own and get even more
@@OnDownTheRoadProductions Yeah, have to try carmax. Carvana quoted me at $30,150 which is a $14,000 loss within 1 year. The used car market is really bad right now.
Sell it yourself the dealership will give you less and sell it for way more!! Trust me
Is the color of your canvas back black? Looks good.
Yep, black with red stitching- thanks!
Best, Terry
You have four 4Runners and you’re worried about the cost of premium?
Not worried about premium, its what we use over 87 octane.
Point is the 4Runner is bad with gas as is, GX is no better but requires premium
"I own four 4Runners" Wow, I thought I was crazy for wanting to get 2 of them.
Does the TRD off road premium have the manual transfer case or the electric twist knob?
Manual
Thanks. Mines in transit. I can’t wait. I’m in Indiana.
@ryanm5361 congratulations 🎉🍾
what did you pay before taxes and registration?

That's what they designed it as
We love them both, and the differences are apparent between the two.
If you can’t afford GX just say it
Wonder how those tires do in the snow.
So we are located in Michigan, and it snowed yesterday more today and tomorrow. Just fine they also have excellent wet weather traction.
It's not technically a Lexus just because it is built in the same plant. It is a Toyota. In Cambridge Ontario Canada some of the Rav4s are built in the same plant as a Lexus. Is the Rav4 a Lexus or Toyota?
Our valid point is that every 4Runner that rolls down the line is treated to the same attention to detail the Lexus GX460 is.
Bro, everyone knows it’s not a Lexus…. You decided, “hey, this guy needs to know he bought a Toyota not a Lexus” 😂
@Ultim8bass No! He said "they're technically a Lexus even though it says Toyota on the vehicle".
Lexus front grilles are hideous imo. Just could never bring myself to buy one because of it.
KDSS?

Does your looney have Kdss?
Nope
I have the same truck except it’s a 23. Same color, etc. Love it but I have to correct you, lots of plastic in the engine compartment, the whole intake manifold is plastic.
The government plastic engine cover is to quiet noises from powertrain and protect upper components. The plastic air cleaner assembly again a they have been that way forever. There are no plastic oil pans etc on the engine build.
Does it have KDSS?
No, wish it did
good question
In 2023 why is anyone still leasing?!
This is one of the old school scams!
Buy it.
Leasing is just renting, the American dream is ownership
90 days of ownership. It will be the same as the 2019 you had. Exact same.
Yes and no. This one has LEDs, Toyota Safety Sense, a better IP, a better audio head unit, and other improvements since 2019. Powertrain agreed.
I own both trdoff road and a suburu crosstrek the suburu is very capable cvt makes no difference it will go through snow mud np ..
CVTs are junk
But the trd pro has the best and highest resell value of all the other trims so it more than makes up for its 10k price over trd off road.
The trd pro with over 10k mileage will still sell for 10k over its msrp (or however much you bought it for) can you say that for any of the other trims?? NO
Trd pro is a no brainer
Check out Car Fax for ORP prices, be amazed.
Lexus has too much weighing it down. Literally and figuratively. Worse offroad capabilities and gas mileage. More things to break.
Totally untrue. Lurkers and Trolls are so hateful. We love GX460 overland rigs. Also check out all the Toyota over 1 million miles videos
Stop calling it a truck when it is an SUV sir.
On the title it’s called a Station Wagon.
This is the only SUV i would say is basically a truck, besides some of the bigger monster SUVs like the excursion..
