      I have the Streamlight Dualie from this video, and one of the nice things is that you can use the clip to hook it on your collar. You can then use the flood beam to get nice illumination of whatever is in front of you.

    I have 3 of these lights, they are the best flashlights I've ever owned. The dual beams is genius, we just go back from a camping trip and I can't emphasize enough how nice it is to see everything around your feet as well as what's up ahead while you are walking on a dark trail. I too have noticed that all of my flashlights with "modes" (and therefore circuits) have a much higher parasitic drain that those with simple switches. I can't tell you how many times I've reached for one of those other lights and it's either totally dead or has a very short run time. I have none of those issues with this light.

  • @markalexander774
    @markalexander774 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    AA and AAA's are a must for a flashlight. If the power goes out for longer than a few hours, I don't want to have to deal with a rechargeable flashlight that needs to be recharged. I am always gong to have AA's, AAA's, and 9V's at my house and every backpack, suitcase, etc. that I have, I always keep a few AA's and AAA's. I will never have to worry about my flashlight not working because it ran out of charge, especially when the situation does not allow for me to charge them.
    I 100% agree about the unnecessary modes. I am only ever going to use one, maybe two modes, and I don't want to have to cycle through fifteen to get to the one that I want, only to accidentally go passed it and have to start again.

      Yeah, I was half kidding around but I can see a scenario where you want to shine your light at a coyote or something in the distance quickly and you hit the wrong button and then you are fumbling around trying to flip the light to find the other button.
      This reason alone is why I chose the Mini Maglite AA Pro. Very simple operation, not even a switch to go bad. After watching this video I decided to test how durable my little maglite was so I took it outside and threw it at the concrete garage floor for 10 minutes straight and then took it apart and poured brake fluid all inside it. I let the brake fluid set a few minutes and then I cleaned it all, put batteries in it, and guess what... when I turned the bezel, the light came on...just like it was supposed to. Nothing more needs to be said about maglite durability. And unlike streamlight, it’s 100% Made in USA!

      AppliedWeaponsTechLLC I have to agree with you there on the maglight pick. The newer drop in LED conversion kits really do throw out some shine, and at a reasonable price. Check out Matt Smiths videos on them. His 5000 lumen Maglight is insane but a bit pricey

      I do find both a spot light and flood light in one flashlight very useful. For up close work the spot has too much glare and the flood is light better. Besides with both lit you can see out ahead and the ground is nicely lit. The spot light button is on the top and the flood light on the bottom. As noted these are single function buttons, just on and off. After trying it out, I bought a second one.

Once when I bought it, once before I went camping this last year, still charged, and I use it ALL the time. Small enough to keep on my person comfortably. RECHARGEABLE. I agree with the Streamlight as a solid flashlight manufacturer. I used Pelican for a while, but the Streamlight has been a fantastic light that I used as a mechanic for a dozen or so years. Cody, for radios I would suggest the following: Get a GMRS license from the FCC for $70. it covers you and your entire family. This gives you the power to legally use 5 watt portables and 50 watt mobile radios. I would look round at Midland for cheaper or what you'd expect to use on a fire with offerings from Motorola, Kenwood, EF Johnson, etc. Some of their product lines take AAA or AA battery packs, which makes things a breeze when your batteries are getting now and dont have a charger handy. 5 watts is the output rating to look for on a handheld radio. Then get a mobile for the van or home, which can run 50 watts.

    The important part of that flashlight is that its intrinsically safe. That's why emergency services use it. Its made for places where explosive gases and dust are normal conditions. The streamlight dualie, is inert. It will not produce a static charge, and its sealed, so it cannot ignite unsafe environments.

    Cody, just a consideration for your fuel and power preps. On my 23 acre homestead in Idaho I have gone to propane for heat, cooking, generator. It is even possible to convert your cars , trucks & etc. Propane stores for years without the degradation of gas and diesel. Here in North Idaho it is only $1.25 a gallon. My 2500 square foot house only consumes 600 gallons a year. Thats less than two months electric bills. You could put a couple of 500 or 1000 gallon tanks underground and be set for years. My house is run by a westinghouse 12,000 wat duel fuel generator. Getting a generator tht is already plumbed and tuned for propane removes the uncertanty of third-party conversion kits, I also have an Arctic Cat Prowler EV, (Electric). Polaris is putting out their own Electric ATV this year. No Gas to store, just charge from your propane generator. For my power system I use a bank of batteries so that I only need to run the generator about 4 hourss a day. This could be suplemented with solar panels. Just a few Ideas for long term preps.

    I’m responsible for disaster prep for a small organization. Great job with the L91 cells! Good choice, streamlight is good also take a look at Brightstar and nightstick intrinsically safe lights used in mines and petrochemical work. Radios are a rabbit hole, can’t go wrong with higher end Motorola, kenwood or icom. People will recommend HAM gear but if your not into it stay away, lots of programming and frankly not all that rugged. There are legalities of what gear can operate on what frequencies. UHF is better at penetrating buildings and obstacles, VHF will go farther over open ground. I would get something in digital UHF, the Motorola EVX-S24 is a decent business class radio that I have had good experiences with. You will need a radio dealer to program it for you.

    Great video as we should all think about this. I give out cheap Homedepot lanterns as gifts all the time. And I know they are cheap, but one thing that is most important with lights is HOW LONG DOES IT LAST on a set of batteries? During a severe incident that lasts days or longer, if your light last 2.5 hrs or needs recharging, your in trouble!
    Those cheap Home Depot lights last 100 hrs on 2 D batteries. Sadly one good drop will break the plastic inside. So good to have many stocked up and in many places too. That Sreamlight is a cool light. streamlight has been around for many of years. Bought my first one in the 80s.

    my best "Survival Light" is this rayovac 6v lantern battery light. I've had and been using it for over 15 years. reverse clicky switch, base that can adjust from 0 to about 45+ degrees, the reflector assembly is removable for a "lantern mode." it came as incandescent, but i put a terralux .5 watt LED module in it (lantern batteries have backwards polarity to conventional lights and that module is +/- tip convertible (also out of production)). the thing about that is you can pick up rechargeable SLA batteries around hunting season, and there's a few readily available 6v chargers starting at $10 at walmart, and Tractor Supply even stocks (stocks, carries in their store) a 6v Solar charger. how bitchin is that. it'll run for days nonstop then recharge with a $20 solar charger. the lesson here is know your local stores and DIY.

    Great video. I was just re-considering my flashlight collection last night (which sounds very similar to yours) and came to the same conclusion. As a former volunteer firefighter the Streamlight we carried was rock solid and simple but did the job well. Decided that would be the right light for the right price for my general needs. Going to put one in my vehicle and have a couple around the house.

    I have recently gotten rid of the double A battery requirement. Unless its the "edc" flashlight that you can monitor its storage, useage, and current standing.
    The issue is the new alkaline battery production is garbage. They leak after sitting on the shelf for 3-6 months. I may look back into them as a lithium replacement.

  • @CampHideAway
    @CampHideAway 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Just make sure you can buy the AA battery clam shells for the radios. Rechargable are ok but if a battery goes dead you can slap new AAs in a clam shell and keep going and not have to wait for a charged battery. Also get VHF frequency range radios, they work better through the woods/trees. The reason why forest FF use VHF.

The beam is piercing but way too narrow for my needs . My one and only complaint . The flood light,however ,is just outstanding . I would have like to have had this back in my tent camping days . Haveing the beam focused down to illuminate the ground just ahead of you would have been great for waking the trails at night and not totally losing your night vision .

The small pen light I've used at work for WORK everyday for 2 years and it won't quit. Lasts forever on 2 aaa batteries, has been dropped upwards of 10 feet, has been dropped in water, is scratched up to the point it's no longer black, still works like new. I hope you're going with the Yaesu VX-6R radio. If you order from Gigaparts or Ham Radio Outlet they will do the MARS/CAP mod on them so that they can be used on the FRS /GMRS and MURS frequencies. Again, let me know if you have questions and want a quick answer instead of a "geek out" (which I can do also) answer. :-)

    • @Devin82m
      @Devin82m 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah, it sounds like he is going with high end FRS, MURS would be better and does not require a license just like FRS, but will get through metal buildings and go much longer distances (included in wooded areas) than FRS. FRS is basically useless unless you're only a few hundred feet from someone else, on rare occasions under specific circumstances can you get any reasonable distance from FRS. That may include elevation, a quality antenna, power output (which there is a pathetic legal limit), and how much line of sight you have. Since everyone in my large group are unlicensed I have conducted numerous tests with them to demonstrate the uselessness of FRS. We live in the mountains of North Idaho and you can literally go around a curve following 50 ft behind someone in a vehicle and FRS won't work. On the other hand we can get up to 4 miles on MURS (unlicensed VHF frequencies). We've also tested FRS in the woods and it's useless there too, and if you are in a metal building just forget it. MURS cuts through all that. So just some thoughts.

    • @Devin82m
      @Devin82m 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      P.S. CB can be good and can consistently transmit out to 25+ miles with a good antenna using SSB mode using the legal power limit of 12 watts. You can also bounce the signal off the ionosphere to get across the US and world during a good solar cycle. Close range works as well, but sometimes will skip over someone really close by, it's still a very valid option. I have a 27 ft base (house) antenna about 15 ft in the air and hear people on CB from Louisiana, granted their probably putting out 1500 watts, but they're loud and clear on the less efficient AM mode.

While I'm a flashlight nerd and give companies like olight, thrunite, klarus and nitecore more $ than i care to admit, i generally agree with your logic for common use and "prepping" purposes. That being said, for the same price, I recommend that you consider the Coast Polysteel 600 over the streamlight you're reviewing. Significantly more lumens (High, Medium, Low), focusing lens, durable, tail clicky, tail standable, usesAA batteries, and great hand feel.

    One of the things that I do not like about this light is the flood light switch. Generally when you need one you are already in the dark. I can see that flood feature blinding you accidentally when you either want the main beam or the flood light. Those battery sleeves are susceptible to breaking when dropped. And I personally prefer regular batteries for a "survival" flashlight. Easy to find, easy to purchase and no need to be concerned if it is charged or not.

    I have used that light a lot, and I like it. But I have 2 complaints.
    1. The flood light on the side is a feature I'd rather not have. When I go to turn the thing on, I always turn on the side light instead of the front. It's a feature that "old grandads light" didn't have. I don't think it's necessary.
    2. The clip on the side. Requires the housing of the light to fit only 3 batteries. Another feature grandads light didn't have.
    I prefer the 4AA propolymer division 1. It just doesn't have those features. Stupid simple. It just works.
