Brilliant video Connor. Lots of useful resources for a bikepacking newbie like me. Would be good to have a tips video about staying safe when bikepacking too. Especially as a lone female.
Hi my first trip around Ireland was a couple years ago and had everything planned from routes to every hotel stay. But after several other trips, I learn to book my stay only when arriving to my destinations. that removes the stress of having to get to point B.
Conor's presentation skills and his vocal chords / voice delivery are improving the more he's doing it, and that's great. Enjoyable video, Conor - please do a similar in-depth video from perhaps the Smoky Mountains or Utah the USA. Good to see B-roll clips of James (I believe it was him) with his friend as well.
This was great, Conor! I'm dying to get out on a bikepacking trip, and this was really helpful with how to plan. I intend to camp, so being able to easily find campgrounds near where I want to end each day will be super helpful.
wow, great advice! I never would have thought of that :) I am usually looking for the main square or some sort of park, there's where I often find a water fountain.
Just finished my first bikepacking trip las week. 4 days in the netherlands sleeping at b&b’s. It all went well but i git a puncture in the first ride after the trip (2k in). I also got myself a wahoo for navogation, that will help next time. Next trip will be 3 days traveling with a hammock on camp sites. Wild camping is illigal here. My county is so densly populated that food and water is always available.
Any advice on “parking your bike”. I recently did my first bikepacking trip and I wanted to visit a city for a couple of hours. But I was afraid of leaving my bike and packs alone somewhere. Plus to save weight I wasn’t carrying a lock... same for hotels do you check before booking that they have bike parking available ?
I take a lightweight rinko bag with me to put the bike in, then the hotel won't mind you bringing it into your room or leaving it in their storage room. If you are willing to stay a full day in the city then that also solves the problem of where to leave bike and bags.
I have found that lots of hostiles will have an indoor bike room and let you use it for a bit before actual check in time if your early and a bit after you check out. Normal hotels and bed & breakfast usually do not accommodate bikes. In those cases or if I am camping I usually find a local bike shop, explain I'm on a trip and ask if they will store my bike and gear for a fee for the day. If you walk in with a six pack of beer for them they will usually let you do it for free or just like $10.
Most hotels, travel lodges etc will let you take your bike into the room, best check with the posh ones...ride with GPS is the best route planner because you can drop the street view man in and see the roads you will be riding
That has Hank written all over it. But it needs to be in the dark, on a ludicrous bike, in the rain, uphill all the way, and at some point someone has to kick him in the nads. Just wouldn’t be proper otherwise.
I said something to the wife about a packing tour. She said sounds fun, pack my suit cases in a limo and we"ll go from 5 star hotel to 5 star hotel.. Thanks Honey!!
after four days in the alps bike packing we ended for a night at a nice posh hotel, turning up looking bedraggled as is they way we booked in and in the lobby a nice young man offered me a glass of champagne, upon looking at my my wife he just looked at her covered in mud splatter and wet and said .. and madam would like a new husband . she has reminded me of that ever time I suggest another bike packing trip
Very useful info! I haven't toured for decades, now, but I plan to get out there again next month. I guess I should invest in a head unit? Any notion of which model is the best value for a rider on a tight budget? Thanks!
I personally love the wooded. Gravel. Off road, then maybe some small country roads. I ride to experience nature and the wilds. Not racing in the tour de France.
I find the elevation data on Kamoot has much to be desired. It underates the amount of climbing on your planned route. As a rule of thumb, I add a third on top of the figure it provides to get a more accurate reading.
I am about to start a ten year journey around England in which I will visit every town and city and I will be the first person in history to do what I am attempting. All by bike. 365 days a year bar injuries and I will be wild camping using my ukulele for money. I could really use some tips on gearing My bike for the task and how I might find possible sponsorship opportunities. I will do this with or without sponsorship but it would be nice.
I'm curious as to why Camel Backs aren't mentioned here. You can carry up to 4 litres of fluid or more and there is space for a multitude of equipment in the pack.
Ironic to show the road to Mt Lemmon, as that area is closed through at least November due to a huge wildfire that pretty much wiped out the whole mountain.
Leave school join gcn😂😂just kidding..I am student as well..just get up early...I ride 25-30 kms (not a commute, separate ride)before my 8 AM classes..it feels really great after some weeks... early days can feel sleepy
It's really really really important that if you are doing the trip with someone that they ride at the same pace as you. I enjoy my rides at a pace of 15 to 17mph. I went with someone that liked to ride at 10 to 12mph and struggled if they tried to go faster. It drove me insane.
Done my trips and planning, I can only recommend overpass-turbo.eu/ which is an api to filter for something specific in open street maps e.g. water fountains. Additionally some openstreetmap-app that can import gpx and you are ready to go as soon as everything necessary is bookmarked. For the next vacation every camping site and fountain on the Euro Velo 6 is marked between the Atlantic and Vienna/Austria as well as the route so I am following the line as I did in Scotland . Do your research, check for shops/restaurants on the way as well for some good food, take your time and take things slowly. If you are bikepacking you have a whole day to go from A further and at some point you will reach your goal. It is not a shame to use trains/buses if there is too much way left on the end of your vacation as long as you enjoy the trip
I'm on the fence with komoot. Love the planning side of it, but the practical "turn-by-turn" element can be extremely frustrating. People look at me as I'm yelling away at komoot, as it told me to turn but then tells me to do a u-turn 15 seconds later!! Or will tell me to turn here, turn there, when its just following the curves of the road, but then ignores directions at a roundabout or t-intersection. I make an assumption (that feels right!) and then get the dreaded, "make a u-turn"! Yelling commences! 😀 We have a bit of an up-and-down relationship! I'm in central Italy and am sticking with it for now, but she is on notice. (and don't get me started on her Italian name & place pronounciations! Maybe komoot mk II will have native speakers instead of miss robo-voice).

What do you do with your bib short? Do you wash it every evening (how?)?
@@tihohohoho i wash my whole kit it every day as I shower. Towel dry then air dry. That is what I have been doing as I don't camp.

Thanks for that quick answer. And do you use a special soap?
Grazie 4 al the infos. G.C.N 4 ever
@Global Cycling Network - Ha! I got an Ed Pratt video about Bikepacking 1 hour before you guys posted this one. :)
Conor, I'm glad you included the Leave no Trace principles on the wild camping.
I agree, nothing worse than going out to the wilderness to de-stress, only to end up stepping on someones loo roll and candy wrapper.
I like the Connor bike packing style: no bags, sleeping with your helmets behind a Bush. What is bike packing without the packing? Biking?
This channel never fails to bring happiness into my day.
Ah great to hear, thanks for watching!
How'd you know I was about to plan a bikepacking trip?! Thanks, Conor!
Gcn spies on our search history 😉
I'm crossing Belgium by bike in 5 days 😂
Conor is a great presenter. Seems down to earth and very friendly. Great information!
Thanks Paul, glad you are enjoying the vid. Conor :)
Brilliant video Connor. Lots of useful resources for a bikepacking newbie like me. Would be good to have a tips video about staying safe when bikepacking too. Especially as a lone female.
The Komoot subscription is worth it for multi-day trips and it has a fab accommodation finder built in.
Hi my first trip around Ireland was a couple years ago and had everything planned from routes to every hotel stay. But after several other trips, I learn to book my stay only when arriving to my destinations. that removes the stress of having to get to point B.
Did your enjoy your trip?
What was the best part?
That trip you planned around the middle of this video lead around 30km by the place I grew up at. Very nice region to cycle at!
A bike-packing video I would like to see would be a review of lightweight tents, sleeping bags and other necessities needed for the adventure.
I would also like this but doubt their would be enough sponsored content in it for them. They might do another video on Apidura bike bags though.
Search the GCN page for bikepacking. They have done a few videos on what to take...and not to take.
@@dirkgross1603 I was thinking more of a comparison of equipment rather than what to take.
Connor is always one step ahead me. I done with the century, now I am planning a bike packing trip...😅 That is well tailored content

Thanks so much for this!!! Can't believe it doesn't have more views
Boom! Perfect timing! Planning to ride Brno-Gdańsk for Tribe Freedom Foundation 🤙
Good luck!!!
Just one week before I start doing three weeks of bikepacking around Italy, perfect timing for the video!

Thanks for the valuable info espeacially about fit to travel
Thank you so much for the refill! it exists in Germany too and I can now save over a kilo
I just luv Conor, he's such a great character, what a guy 👍
Thanks Lee :)
You are an awesome crew. Hope you are still in Touch with the Former presenters
Excellent video. Thank you very much,.
I’ve just got into road cycling thanks this video helped alot
If you need water look for graveyards. They always have public water available and you can find them almost anywhere.

Thank you for this very useful video!
Nice, enjoyed this. Hope I can do some riding in the west of Ireland this year.

Just in the middle of planning a touring trip round the north coast of Ireland. When did cycle touring turn into bikepacking?
Because apparently panniers and racks are uncool now and you have to have frame bags instead
Plan a bike trip is easy! I need tips to put the plan on motion 😅
Very useful info! I haven't toured for decades, now, but I plan to get out there again next month. I guess I should invest in a head unit? Any notion of which model is the best value for a rider on a tight budget? Thanks!

How did you mount your head unit to Grail’s hoverbar?
Hey! Thanks for the video! In your experience do hotels always allow you to keep the bike in your room?

Makes me want to give it a try, but I need to wait for my broken collarbone to heal 😑. Another video focused on gear would be good.
Broke my collarbone on a bike 2 months ago. Feel you mate
Deja vu, wasn’t this released last week then taken down?
I think it's had some extra bits added.
I think they've crammed in even more obvious Komoot sales pitches. There's really nothing of value in here, it's just one long Komoot ad.
@@DaleRC75 This advertising isn't subliminal :P
@@Mupworp I found Kamoot confusing as...and as for uploading to the wahoo, forget that!

The first thing you need, is a Fat Bike... and none of this Gravel Bike nonsense.
