Gabrielle, this is the best podcast you have done. Not because of the topic/content area but because it covers the discussion of evidence and the need to follow the scientific method, and principals of scientific evidence. Layne is a great guest and I follow his channel too, because he is always trying to be evidence based. Great to see the relationship you have together as well and the history you have together.

I'm not sure I can make it through the interview because of the incessant interrupts from Dr Lyon, it's a bit ridiculous to be honest. ask a question, get a response then ask for clarification. that's how normal adults converse.
To clarify, my brain doesn't process interruptions well, and there is valuable Intel here. they also know each other, but when the interruptions do happen, makes it very hard for me to follow along.

@ They did have a good rapport, but I still wish she’d have let him finish his sentences. She hosted him on her podcast so we could hear his insight on various topics. Most podcasts I listen to are hosted by women and I’ve never noticed or been bothered by the interrupting in a manner like this. Just because there’s a ‘study’ saying something doesn’t mean we’re not allowed to be bothered by it.

@20:35 Gabriella is talking energy balance (calories in and calories out) and says that calories in is “pretty streamlined.” I think we have actually the opposite problem with studies in terms of clinical measurement. What seems to be clear is our ability to measure energy expenditure per indirect calorimetry and direct calorimetry. What is incredibly unclear, even with all of the advances and modern studies, is how much energy we are actually taking in and how that is aggregated within our individual body composition, genetics, etc.

    • @matthewcreelman1347
      @matthewcreelman1347 2 วันที่ผ่านมา

I don't think that it's particularly unclear. When you input X calories and see Y change in weight over time, you can make some reasonably confident assumptions about how the individual body in question is using those calories.

Would love to hear your thoughts on the following:
It seems like cardio fitness along with strength and muscle mass are the keys to healthy longevity. Body fat is also a concern.
How does all this apply to someone who succeeds in building cardio fitness, strength and muscle mass, but struggles or fails to reduce body fat? I'm doing very well at the first two, but I'm near 30% body fat and not making progress at getting even to 25% (male, age 58).
Is it that important to lose body fat if everything else is going well? Should I sacrifice muscle mass to get lower body fat?

Warren, it seems like you are doing great already. But if you still want to lose some body fat, try to lower your intake of calories somewhat with the carbs and the fats, while keeping intake of protein up. Personally I find it easier to decrease fat intake, but you'd have to look at your specific food intake.

Calories In Calories Out seems like weak measurement and weak science. 3.5 Ounces of wild salmon and 1 glazed donut both have 300 calories. There is no way the body has the same hormonal response or metabolic response to those foods. Doctor can you explain this? Can you tell us about the electron chain transport system and how we extract electrons for our metabolites?

This is definitely a great interview! I think that everyone has a specific ideal carb threshold depending on age, activity level, etc. Your body will let you know! There are several things that can let you know that your body is having insulin issues. Protein is the most important! That is what you have to get right.

For me, weight loss required me to eat more. Eating 1400 calories made me exhausted, couldn't finish the bike ride. Feeding the bike ride had me riding further, had me feeling better after, had me moving more. I'm certainly not saying just eating more and laying on the couch is the solution, but you have to fuel your body or it just can't perform

I’ll post it below, basically what it shows is that consuming carbs doesn’t cause the carbs to be turned into fat, your body switches to burning the carbs and storing the fat if you’re in an energy surplus. Which basically makes sense, why would your body spend a ton of energy converting glucose into fats when it could simply burn the glucose and store the fat.

      @@Sol-01 bloods are fine but:
      1. Progress is slowing. 10lbs loss used to take 1 month. Now it's taking 4 months which is absurd. I am still at 30% body fat (at 295 lb), it shouldn't be this slow
      2. Cortisol/stress. Eventually, it becomes a bit harder to sleep. I do take a lot of caffeine but I cut if off at noon.
I just want the raw truth, and I want to experiment with my own body, not trust anyone else.
      I've been 8 eggs + 1.25 lb 20%fat ground beef + 6oz salmon for ETERNITY.
If changing that to 10 egg whites + 1.25 lb 10%fat groudn beef + adding in veggies/rice makes it EASIER to lose weight, I want to know / need to try.

I was lean and long but now my muscles are more defined NOT BULKY. I get compliments on my arms all the time. I always wanted that from Pilates but never got it.
Full range of motion + progressive overload + intensity + a high protein diet! I’m in my 40s and look better than I did in my 20s with great mobility and flexibility from full range of motion and good form.

@@hardlylast I’m new to this space and won’t pretend to be an expert but Sebastien Lagree (Legree reformer method founder) lists 8 ways that Lagree progressive overloads. (See below)
I’d be very interested in a trial and response from Gabrielle or Layne based on this specific method because when they say Pilates and yoga is stretching that’s not accurate but it makes me think they’re only aware of more “natural” Pilates.
In Lagree, muscle overload can be progressed by:
      -improving Form/Body alignment improving R.O.M.
-slowing down the movement (Tempo) increasing Duration. Longer than a minute.
-increasing the number of sets for a target muscle group (Sequence)
-increasing the intensity- more work in the same time, i.e. reducing the recovery periods (Transitions)
      -Incorporating additional movement
-Changing the position of the body to get more or less resistance from the same spring(s)
-Adding and taking off weighted springs depending on the exercise.

Let me break it down for everyone. None of these people in the " nutritional" space really know anything for sure. It is simply to complicated. Here's what you do. Try eating a high carb diet for a while and see how it goes. Then try a higher protein and fat very low or no carb diet and see how it goes. Then compare the two. Be your own study.

      @mariad1151 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

@SawBlade11 that's a knee-jerk point of view. It's what we've been told. There is a lot more to it. Because one can lose weight by not eating doesn't mean the reverse. The body reduces the rate at which it burns calories for fuel when food is scarce. That makes great sense & I believe Lane Norton states that in this podcast. Science is catching up to the complexity. I recommend Taubes if you have an interest in the subject at all. Zach Knight will tell you the current state of the art. We are moving away from the outmoded idea you put forth, but changing what folks believe is quite difficult. Best luck to you.

I believe the most impressive group of people are the Sherpas in the Himalayas who routinely save the lives of westerners climbing Everest. The people who can carry 2 to 2-1/2 times their own body weight up the mountains without supplemental oxygen. No offense but not sure if Layne or very many other powerlifters or bodybuilders or marathon athletes could accomplish that task. Sherpas live in an area of higher altitude and have darker skin tone which we know that as there is an increase in altitude there is an increase in UV light from the sun. We also know that UV light increases the melanin and it is listed in some sciences as the most protective antioxidant. Powerful antioxidant against ROS from mitochondria combustion. We also think their ability to remodel long and heart tissue is greater. Further, interesting that the Sherpas eat high carbohydrate diets at base camp but nearly all saturated fat diets during their accents up the mountain. I wonder if this is because Fat as fuel produces nearly 3 x the electron in the electron chain transport system as does carbohydrates and fat has much less deuterium water. Which we know from many studies the deuterium water is toxic to mitochondria. Dr. Doug Wallace of the childrens hospital in Philadelphia has incredible science research on Mitochondria. Which always makes me wonder what is the difference between an alive anatomy and a deceased anatomy just seconds after passing. Seems to be the energy. Mitochondria holds the influence of all energy in the anatomy.

Sorry, I respectfully disagree. This is a reasonably wide ranging interview that he may not have had a heads up on ahead of time, and it can take weeks to review all the relevant literature and he has and job and life that wouldn't allow that time commitment to something that is not of direct interest to him. No one can know everything about everything in an encyclopedic manner on the spot. And honest scientists know that there is rarely a straight forward answer to give in science as there are always additional factors/confounds to consider other factors, however, he takes an evidenced based approach to anything he does stand behind.
What's his voice got to do with anything, would you like personal attacks about features of you as a human being that you have no control over? Some of us may prefer listening to David Attenborough's voice, but we would necessarily publicly critise someone for not sounding like him.

I noticed that too. Just say you haven't read the literature. The reality is most of the research he leans on (no pun intended) was done on men, not women. I am menopausal. I admit I am tired at the end of the day because I am in the gym at 4:50am 4 days of the week and hiking on the weekend. I stopped drinking alcohol 10 years ago, so that ain't it, anymore, probably was contributory when I was perimenopausal. Bottom line. Women's hormones are very different from men's and do effect physiology profoundly.
