I absolutely adore this film and it made a giant (heh heh) impact on me as a kid. I was already anti-gun and anti-military, but this film reinforced that feeling tenfold and made me appreciate the power of peace and compassion. It's unfortunate that this film didn't have the impact it should have upon release but I'm always glad to see the love for this film reaching farther and growing even after 20 years. It really is a work of art, through and through. Thanks as always Tim :)
the films message itself is too subversive for populist media in a society built on individualism. its message expresses masculinity through rising above the easy path of violence and domination and instead choosing empathy, understanding, and compassion especially in the face of incredible adversity (a little boy has every reason to fear a giant metal man but instead finds a friend in his innate compulsion to help something with a soul in a pain) our hero doesn’t even dominate our villain, they instead lay down and die to expose truth to the situation and there is no love without honesty.
I watched this movie when I was really little. It's always had a special place with me. It's the first movie I ever watched where I cried and understood the reason why I was. The editing of the ending climax took me back to that moment in my life. Thank you for reviewing this wonderful gem of a movie. I hope it can find its way into the hearts of many more. You've earned a sub.
Thanks for sharing, wonderful story and absolutely the kind of response I'd hoped to get. Glad I could bring back some fond memories, and welcome aboard! 😀
This was such an amazing movie. Thank you for bringing it back to some attention. This is one of those movies that has stayed with me since I first watched it.
Same here! Was a childhood favorite of mine and recently re-watched it for the first time in years. Was just as good (if not better) as I remembered and was immediately inspired to make something. Just hoping to spread the word to more out there!
This was and still is one of my absolute favorite animated films ever! The Iron Giant is a masterpiece of animation and great storytelling. Great video on the film by the way
@@TimThoughts I remember when they announced the Signature Edition of the film was coming out and it would be shown in theaters, my dad and I got tickets to go see that in theaters and it was amazing. By the way, what are your thoughts on the Signature Edition of the movie versus the original release? Just wondering
@@SHMidlerPlays that's awesome! I'm sure it's a special memory 🙂 I think the signature edition is great! I like the giant dream scene - it helps add some context as to why he feels so compelled to violence and imo, further expounds on the sort of nature vs. nurture argument more. Though also I do think the original cut stands just fine on its own as well!
@@TimThoughts it is a very special memory, and I do agree with the dream sequence thing and that scene is pretty great. But the original cut is still my favorite personally, it is much easier to see things in the original cut especially in the scenes at night in the movie
beautiful film, makes me cry everytime. i think it’s a type film little boys really need. masculinity expressed by rising above violence and instead choosing understanding.
Yep I totally get you! It was always well received by critics, but was also totally destroyed at the box office due to an almost nonexistent marketing effort. So essentially, a major motivation in making this video was trying to encourage more people to watch and experience the film. It has certainly found new life in the years since (especially with streaming), but there are still many people who have only vaguely heard of the film and never gave it a fair chance. So that's how I'm using underrated in the title, hope it makes sense! 🙂
@@TimThoughtsI worked at a movie theatre box office booth when this was released. It was extremely disheartening to see it so poorly patronized, especially when I knew how good it was. It should have been a smash hit and it should be a household name right up with the best of animated films. Thanks for sharing your thoughts on this one.
@@00TheRealTC Hey, thanks for the insights! I remember watching it in theaters and thinking it was amazing. Didn't realize at the time how few others had seen it. Came across the film again and was completely inspired to make this video. Hope it encourages others to check it out too! Appreciate the comment, cheers! 🙂
Lol that is totally fair. I would like to say that I intended to mean "underrated" in the sense that there are still so many who would never mention it in conversation of their favorite animated/90s movies and more still who have never even seen it! It was a travesty that it performed so poorly in the box office, and I would have loved to dive deeper into that concept and story in this video, but just didn't have the time. In any case, appreciate ya!
I probably sound like a broken record at this point, but I'm using underrated in the sense that so many people never saw the film due to its lackluster marketing effort when it initially released. While it was always well received critically, I think many people never really had a chance to watch it - and I was hoping to inspire people like that to finally experience the film. Appreciate your comment!
The movie essentially bombed upon release thanks to WB paltry effort to market the film, so at the time it was overlooked. Today, it thankfully has many fans :)

Thanks Sam, lovely sentiment. Definitely an amazing film with a powerful message. I hope that this video can help it reach more people out there! 🙂

I also loved The Iron Giant, it is such a great movie
The fact it was left with that extreme opener and zero closure afterwards is criminal haha. He was still alive!!!!!!
My favorite movie of all time, thank you for doing it justice with this video!

Dude this video needs more than 2.8k views. It's really grear 😃👍
Many thanks, appreciate you! 🙏😄

Completely agree with you. We could all use more films and role models like this. We all choose each and every day who we are and who we decide to be.
great video! i would have thought you had way more subscribers and views!
Hey thanks, really appreciate it! Still working on that second part... 😅
Im in the middle of kicking around a philosophical short story about a gun that wouldn't kill the innocent, so this is a much watch
@@davidyoung5640 Ooh yes definitely a must watch - seems to fit perfectly in with your thesis! Sounds like kismet
6:34 A lot of good films really suffered from bad marketing.
Ain't that the truth
Classic lion with a thorn in its paw plot device.
I'll bet Kent Mansley has a connection with Richard Nixon.
WHERE'S THE GIANT, MANSLEY?!
Mansley was easily the best part of this film 🤣🤣🤣
Amazing character and perfect casting! 👌
I don't understand how you define Underrated, The Iron Giant was a well received film globally at its time.

Calling this highly appraised movie "underrated" is like calling Shawshank Redemption underrated.

"underrated" the movie they play for 24hrs every thx giving.....
A solid point!
Counterpoint: most people don't even subscribe to cable TV these days lol

I have never seen this mentioned in person or aired on TV
¯\_(ツ)_/¯
