One thing that really bothered me was her saying that something isn’t magick, it’s science. Well the two aren’t mutually exclusive. Magick incorporates a lot of science.
or science incorporates a lot of magick..... magick is science we have yet to discover. Takes a bit of the fantastical away, but in the end it is not that far from the truth. When somebody tells you that st. Johns worth can be used as a mild antidepressant, is it because st. Johns worth is magick? no, it is the hyperforin in the plant that does that...... When somebody tells you to bind some rosemary on a walking staff for protection....well I think that is merely a belief, because it is said so. Or maybe not discovered why...who knows? It works both ways, into science and into intentional belief.
@@Nonorama the rosemary thing is scientifically true because the herb is toxic to many predatory animals, and the scent repels them. It also has antimicrobial properties that scientifically make it great for cleansing, and the scent is quite lovely and also aids in reducing anxiety. (Sorry, lol, I'm a rosemary nerd....)
@@solvolva ah yes, the smell is absolutely lovely! I would like to look into that information a bit more, because it sounds interesting ^^ So it might work similar as black cumin? (because mildly tic repellent)
Thor: "Your ancestors called it magic, but you call it science. I come from a land where they are one and the same." I'm a skeptic yet a witch. The two things shouldn't contradict each other.
i'm skeptic too, like, i don't actually believe in demons or deities. but the general idea of witchcraft is becoming appealing to me lately because call it magic or not, the idea of an energy in everything, conecting with nature, does makes sense to me and there is a lot of herbal science and such around it too so it looks to me more scientifically based than other belief systems.
@Poppa Bones yeah but maybe not everyone has the same definition of what magic is to you, so it's not generally valid. I'm not a fan of this "there is only one right answer thing". And if I wanted that, I'd go to church 🤷 (don't want to be negative, just sharing my opinion with you. Blessed be 🌙)
OMG SAME. HOW ARE YOU DOING WITH THE CRAFT??? I'M REALLY SCARED NOTHING HAPPENS BECAUSE I'M SO SKEPTICAL. I try to think about it as a science based in secrets that haven't been explained yet
@@PumaArg if you’re having too much doubt about your spell then that will show in through whatever you’re making. You have to put a lot of energy and intention into your spells try to make any doubt go away. Also things won’t happen if you don’t apply them. Say you make a spell for landing a job but never send in a job application then it obviously can’t help you.
I don't have a problem with skeptics in general, but I do have a problem with people like her, who are quite obviously disrespecting other peoples beliefs and making them into a joke
Yeah, I remember being dismissive toward astrology until I got readings done and realized that I completely misunderstood it. Now I'm on my way to be my own astrologer.
I am an atheist myself and skeptic, sometimes even antitheist if they are homophobic, trasphobic, misogynistic or use their beliefs to insult someone or tell them how to live their lives or hurt someone in any way. I do not believe in anything supernatural really but however I am very much interested in witchcraft... Is it possible to be a witch and not to believe in supernatural?
You have been incredibly kind towards Jaclyn throughout this entire video. I think she comes across as condescending and rude. It's one think to be a sceptic, it's another to be an ass. Oof.
Also, when the man is chanting, "Banish stress, banish strife, all that's good will come to life" is so soothing. His voice is fantastic, I love this guy.
I think Jaclyn's brand of skepticism (more on par with early 2000's skeptics) is one that makes fun of anything that looks unbelievable on the surface. Skeptic was honestly probably synonymous with "being a disrespectful jackass" then, whereas now I'm pleased to see a growing trend of what actual skepticism is, which is the pursuit of truth, even if it proves you wrong. You should check out r/SASSWitches on reddit - it's a community for witches who consider themselves skeptics.
I lowkey wanna unsubscribed from jaclyn but I feel attached bc she helped me stop believing in christianity and I like her recent videos they just seem chill and laid back so idk.. 🤷♀️
Read the comment. Thought it was a bit strong. Watched the video. Came back to announce I was wrong. She acts like a condescending ass through most of this.
There are also atheist witches, atheism is just lacking a belief in a god/ gods or goddess and it just seems that this was poorly researched. She can understand that atheism isn't a religion but just didn't bother with witchcraft? Or at least to clarify that for her audience.
This! People of all beliefs can practice witchcraft. I’m fairly agnostic when it comes to deities, and I don’t really follow a specific religion. Witches come from all types of backgrounds and beliefs, whether they be Wiccan, Jewish, Atheist, or anything else!
I'm a witch as well and I'm studying witchcraft as well as my girlfriend. I have friends who are witches and I have to say that if Jaclyn came to a ceremony she wouldn't last FIVE minutes in the Covenant. Just sayin.
The only time I'm against placebo effects is if it's making you think you cured something serious, like taking essential oils will cure cancer or some shit But if you have a placebo of chamomile making you tired or relaxed enough to sleep easier, thats actually pretty good imo. Edit: typos. I apparently can't spell pfft
@@raynethescribe2772 well obviously it won't make you think you 'cured' or anything serious but at least makes you think you're doing something in your power to help :)
no one ever talks about how the placebo effect just further supports the argument of how powerful our minds are. By belief alone we can manifest healing..
Placebo effect can literally cure thinks like Parkinson’s for certain periods of time, why is it a bad thing? Our minds are so powerful, just let people be
Jaclyn Glenn definitely went into this experience with a *closed mind* because she was more than ready to dismiss anything that didn't jive with her and, even more disappointing, when she didn't really understand something, and didn't ask any further questions to even attempt to understand. She seemed more than content to disagree with the surface explanation and reaffirm her own beliefs. The fact that she even calls herself a skeptic is misleading. A real skeptic may not fully agree or even be wary of another's opinion BUT.... they ask *PROBING QUESTIONS* and have IN DEPTH CONVERSATIONS to really try to understand the other side. They even challenge their own beliefs for the sake of getting at the truth. ....Jaclyn isn't a sceptic. She's just straight up an ignorant person who's not trying to educate, but solely trying to get clicks. ....And that's a shame too because she was getting a lot of really good information from that guy, but she ruined it.
Rick C-137 I agree with what you said about Jaclyn calling herself a skeptic being misleading and with your take on a real skeptic... " A real skeptic may not fully agree or even be wary of another's opinion BUT.... they ask PROBING QUESTIONS and have IN DEPTH CONVERSATIONS to really try to understand the other side. They even challenge their own beliefs for the sake of getting at the truth." A sincere interest and open minded look into witchcraft would have been a much better video from Jaclyn Glenn.
she went into this ready to just make it seem like a halloween store and laugh at it like its a bunch of wackos who play with broom sticks when in reality its filled with actual real shit and people who work with deities and fairies and its some real shit. its just been hyped up in movies to look like a land of make believe and jokes.
As a witch myself I have been skeptical, my friend who's pagan and a witch has told me a lot of things where I'm like mhm.... okay.... But then I'll ask all the questions I can to try and understand better or to make my own conclusion. Just because you personally don't agree with someone doesn't mean you're right. I really agree with your comment. 👏🏻
You’re so right about the editing, every time they used that bloody cymbal noise, like the ones they use when something mildly dramatic happens in reality shows, it was just like “WOAH these IDIOTS just said something SoWeIrD” and it pisses me off to no end, it’s forcing this view point down people’s throats, and not keeping it open to people making up their own mind. It upsets me so much
I’m a bruja (witch) but I’m from the Carribean so my witchcraft is West African and Indigenous based. We don’t do a lot of these things. But some things we do also. I think it’s important to mention that your cultural lineage has a lot to do with HOW you practice witchcraft.
Since ,I'm half Russian...I agree with you on mentioning one's Ancestral Heritage in their practice...both East Slavic Witchcraft & Russian Black Magick are are part of my practice
Not necessarily. For some connecting with the craft of their lineage is important to them. For others, they have no connection with their linage and pull various elements from many traditions to develop their own personal practices.
If you like atheists, check out the channel of mr atheist, i think he changed the channel name to jimmy snow. He is very respectful towards other beliefs as long as they are harming no one else.
I agree people shouldn't make videos to mock anyone, but being a sceptic isn't a bad thing and it's not the same as being ignorant. I think there is a difference between endless scepticism just for the sake of being close minded and skepticism as a healthy approach to new topics so you don't believe everything and actually ask questions.
@@enchanted_wildflower_ The thing is Jaclyn is an open atheist. And he's an exreamly pushy atheist. I used to like her videos until she pushed the crystal healing "It didn't work for me, so I don't understand how it would work for everyone else" but then goes onto explain how its all fake and is a placebo. I don't see what's wrong in placebo, if it helps others why is it bad? "It's a scam!" People can spend their money however they like with people who are trained in tricking the mind into not feeling pain. Her entire channel (used to be I don't know if it still is) all about debunking religion and religious TH-camrs. While I'm fine with her talking about the toxicity of it all, her taking the "It didn't work for me so it won't work anyone else" attitude now rubes me the wrong way. It's one thing to be like "I went in not thinking it would work" which a TON of skeptics do and it's another to go in totally blind, which (funny enough) Glam and Gore did with her Ghost Hunting series. She was open to having experiences, Jaclyn goes in thinking it's all mumbo jumbo from the start.
Mythian Most of them are like yeah it’s bullshit but I’m gonna try it anyway. If you think it won’t work, you’re unlikely to succeed in any of it. When I found witchcraft even if I was sceptical as I am of anything, I gave it a chance. I was open to understanding it, to understanding witches. I just don’t see the point in being mocking or rude about people’s beliefs like that.
Certain type of people want to keep their own status quo even if they are curious or don't understand. I know people personally that are way to skeptical of everything. Life is simple if you let it be.
I feel like there's a line between being personally skeptical and being judgemental of other beliefs. If you are skeptical but respectful of the fact that others do believe differently there is no issue there, being skeptical isn't an issue. It's an issue when you openly mock people for the things that they hold close. I do think that some of the context did get lost when they edited out her (disgusting) ex. So I do agree that there is a redeeming factor. It just sucks that the parts that could be left in were the mildly disrespectful ones. (PS, I'm a lavender hater. I'm not afraid to say it. The scent gives me migraines and the seeds themselves make me sneeze. There is nothing calming or peaceful about that. I do have some in my collection, because it came in a box with other stuff, but it is very much sealed. I would honestly be tempted to use the nasty stuff in cursing, because personally I can only see negatives in it.)
Simply Vince we all have that one herb that just does us in! My seasonal allergies are awful (like I sneeze pretty much all the time) and anything that has pollen is a big problem for me.
No judgement here, I'm allergic to pollen and tbh even just dried petals make my allergies start up so like, green herbs are fine, but flowers just make my sinuses miserable pfft
I love fresh or dried lavender... I absolutely despise lavender essential oil. I used to think I hated all lavender because everything 'lavender scented' uses the oil.
This is getting me emotional about the portrayal of the witches in the video (mainly about hearth's point around the herbal bag part). It really isn't kind to have painted it in a mocking "this is so weird" light.
She has the attitude of "It doesn't work for me so it won't work for anyone else" which oozes from her. She thinks she's morally superior because she doesn't believe these things. She's an incredibly pushy atheist and I'm finding content like hers and Mr.Atheist's to be condescending to those that do believe in these practices. Yes, you will run into scam artists. But what of the people who are in chronic pain and don't want to rely on medication to make it through the day? If meditation works in relieving nerve pain that can't be healed (what I currently have), how is that bad? She'd push it to be the placebo effect as if that's a bad thing.
@@SilverMoon459 Mr. Atheist has actually said a few times that he respects his pagan/witchy audience. That's actually a pretty sizable part of his audience. He is condescending towards specifically hierarchical religions like Christianity, and I think that's an important distinction to make.
@@katherinec6656 While you're right about him saying that he respects pagans, he also wants paganism to end and all religon to end. He likes to say that "I want people to believe in as many true things as possible and in as few false things as possible" and talks against believing in something that has no concrete evidence, since he believes that this can be very dangerous, while still affirming that he's fine with pagans and progressive christians. His position doesn't fully make sense to me because it seems kinda contradictory.
The thing that upsets me about this is I think she’s gotten so caught up in her hate/dislike towards Christianity, and trying to disprove it all together that she is so quick to mock witches even though most of the time witchcraft does not harm anyone, like the beliefs she complains about. Like someone else said here, If it’s not harming anyone she shouldn’t be mocking it in my opinion. I don’t believe in some things but I don’t go around mocking them because of my personal beliefs.
You shouldnt be blatantly disrespectful to anyones religion in general i know plenty of christians who dont harm anyone but she never shines light on that shes very childish and rude.
She was the same way to non religious people when she was a Christian. She even admitted herself. She was very judgemental and rude to non believers and now that she's an atheist, nothing changed.
I don't like her because she acts like a good person but her actions show otherwise. A truly good person wouldnt be hateful towards another human being or anything. If they dislike something, they would still be respectful. 🤷🏻♀️
Thank you for the “go to the doctor” disclaimer because in the current pandemic there is a lot of nonsense and pseudoscience flying around and it’s aggravating
"Its not hard to hold in laughter, its even easier to edit it out." I've met many people who don't believe as I do and I've never felt the urge to laugh when they've told me things that I don't believe. That seems like a strange reaction to me...particularly as Jaclyn sought them out and asked them to take the time to explain it to her.
I really enjoy your comments on this 👏👏👏 Unfortunately, as with many subgroups, the media portrays them in a horrible and stereotypical way (speaking from my own experience as a sex worker - and witch). And that can be so frustrating. I always enjoy when they actually interview someone that holds their ground and can talk in a way the masses will understand.
i know right? the same thing happened when steve harvey on his segment of "is this weird":/ it is so transparently scripted that one of the most famous bronies in the brony community tripped them up and this phony psychologist said that it might become obsessive if he is racing cars that represent characters from "my little pony", they even cut his hair and put him in this nerdy geeky vest that doesn't represent his style at all. in real life, dude talks like a surfer and wears black t-shirts and jeans, helps organize many conventions and charities donations, as well as host his youtube channel where he and others react to things, and the "psychologist" wouldn't stop stuttering when ac questioned why he thinks the way he does. the biggest point ac was trying to make was that being a brony for him means breaking a lot of gender stereotypes and how freeing it can be to enjoy something "girly" without fear of his masculinity being diminished, which i love:) so many men in multiple cultures are taught to be super tough by not expressing emotions, and it causes so much damage just like the damage of the madonna/whore complex does to women:/ generally most popular media does a huge disservice when they don't go in with an open mind when looking at something different from "the norm":/
They were all trying to tell her that everything they are doing begins with Intention, but Jaclyn was just not getting it. She was only seeing the action, and not hearing the intention.
Fun fact: There is science to support the idea that everything has some kind of conciousness. Living beings just have the most of it because we are the most complex. Its theoretical physics and the math checks out. And thats what I dont like on sceptics. They mostly dont know enough about science to really say anything about it. They often just think science means "only what you can see is real" Jea... so radiowaves arent real or what?
If you do a healing spell and then refuse anyways to be healed like going to a doctor then you are not actually trying to get the best outcome of the spell🙃🙃 and then your spell will fail🥰 so don’t be dumb and go to the doctor please hunny, you could be dying, blessed be🥰😘
It is also important to check carefully that you go to an independent medical practice and not to one that has been bought indirectly by a company through a clinic, they even talk people into unnecessary treatments so that they can meet their monthly treatment quota and not be sanctioned. I saw a report about it on TV.
@Tesla Gibson In some areas, maybe. Certainly not in the US though. I think half of _their_ population is christian young earth creationists. Presumably, people expect her to dress like what they think satanists dress like because atheism and satanism gets mixed up a lot, especially in the US.
The way she looks away and mumbles "ok.." as a reaction to these people sharing their beliefs is extremely disrespectful. Just because you can't understand it does not make you better than these practitioners.
Edy Puentes im a Muslim and I’m not a witch but I 100% agree with you. I also believe in witches and witchcraft it does exist in all religion. In fact while going through my divorce I was trying to find one even tho it’s a “sin” in my religion but he was so abusive and took my child for 3 months she was in a very bad condition. I wanted him to be gone. And I still do to be honest. Maybe some Muslims if seeing this comment will bash me but man I wish I could do witchcraft. One of my closest friends (but I can’t handle him around very much) for the specific reasons you mention. About their believes eye rolls and whatever even if I’m not speaking about anything offensive just my point of view of things. Even none religious... and I always get so upset and super annoyed around him... now that you put it that way, I thought it was a problem of his mentality but now I think his believes has a lot to do with it.
I bet she was the same to non religious people when she was a Christian. Edit: just remembered that she has admitted to being incredibly rude and judgemental as a Christian towards non Christians, hell even the Christians that were practicing it "wrong". Now that's shes an atheist shes rude to everyone
That was a real turn-off when I watched. However, after sitting with it for a while, I realized that what I'd initially interpreted as "scorn" was much more likely EXTREME discomfort. I definitely smirk and giggle when I'm feeling awkward and vulnerable, and that is more a reflection of my own self-consciousness than it is a statement on how I feel about someone else. I think she probably felt waaay out of her element here, and we probably witnessed a lot of that anxiety coming to the surface.
@@tima2553 I'm glad your a Muslim and accepting of witches because I met 3 Muslims and 5 Christians that told me I was going to hell for my practice and that my religion "Wicca" is BS. I'm very glad that you're accepting! I respect Muslims of course!
3:20 WHY does everyone go to The Green Man for their videos?! It's sooo weird to me. This is Los Angeles, California!!!! LA is a massive city with an extremely diverse population and tons of different witchcraft practitioners who follow totally different paths (Santeria, Brujeria, Paganism, Wicca, Kabbalah, non-religious practices, etc.). There are SO MANY witchcraft and metaphysical shops here!! Don't get me wrong. The Green Man is great. I just don't understand why it keeps getting visited in videos.
As a video producer by trade I can tell you from watching this that she definitely edited this video with bias and her intention was not to show in any way that she was "on board" with what was happening. As the "producer" of her content, she would have had the final say on what was put into the video.
30:22 I wish THEY were giving her the context that you're giving us. Maybe they did and she just edited it out, but it's possible they just took her through the ritual without providing any context for why they were performing the actions they were performing. So that would be a shame too. You're right-the video is edited really poorly, but also, not everyone is an educator, and they might not have been filling in the gaps in her understanding.
My entire life has been immersed in magickal ways. When I was born, I was told that Mom actually performed a ceremony of white roses in an air circle. So, as it turned out, I am an Aquarian born on Feb 1st. Which was why I asked you about the athame. Anyway, blessed be Lady Hearth.
If I don't tell the herbs in A Mojo bag what I want them to do then I should just call it A mystery bag at that point because it's A mystery what it's going to do. Awesome video, I love to hear your opinion on these matters.
What pisses me off about Jaclyn and most "skeptics" is that rather than having a true healthy level of skepticism about the occult (which I have even as a self-identified witch, because we should always question things and use deductive reasoning), they instead have an air about them that suggests they aren't willing to be convinced, they aren't really trying to learn or listen, and they look down their nose at all of this. You can't actually learn about or form respect for a way of life if you enter the conversation about it thinking that you already know everything and nothing they say can be of more value than what you already think of them based off of stereotypes or something you heard somewhere. Jaclyn obviously thinks far more about her opinions of witchcraft and what she thought she knew before this video than anything anyone is telling her, and the video is edited to reflect that. This is very fake "woke", in the whole sense that she is pretending she cares about witchcraft and people who think differently than her when it is painfully obvious that she doesn't respect it at all, much like the people in the Buzzfeed video and most other videos where non witches try to explain witchcraft.
She’s just so judgemental. I usually enjoy her content but there’s a difference between being a sceptic and mocking people’s beliefs. There is no point in being an angry atheist. I was angry for so long but I decided to open up myself when I found out witchcraft was a thing, and I realised that it’s something that I could believe in. I can never agree with most of the mainstream religions, but I can respect people’s beliefs as long as it is not harmful to anyone else. Who am I to bash what makes someone happy? When I say something about witchcraft to people sometimes they tell me to convince them, and I refuse, because that’s not what I was trying to do. I was sharing something about myself. I’m not here to convert people, I just want to be me. I can try to explain the general belief, but I am not doing it to convince anyone. It makes me feel like locking it all away. When people go into it with a closed mind, obviously they can’t grasp any of it properly. So there is no point in explaining anything when they’re already mocking you and saying ‘I’m a sceptic, sooo’. I am also a sceptic, I don’t believe whatever some random person says. I formed my beliefs based on my own experiences, and I can’t share that with someone who will say I’m being delusional because it doesn’t make sense to them. Magick and witchcraft are so wonderful, and it’s sad everyone pushes us into the ‘loony bin’ of religious people when so many of us aren’t even religious.
Overall, pretty good. I do disagree with you on one point though: Painting a room can indeed be a magical act. But then, I think too many people create an artificial boundary between "that which is mundane" and "that which is magical."
I agree with you too!! I believe anything put out with a certain intention can be magick, even going go sleep at night and saying "I'll sleep good" or waking up and saying an affirmation. But I think what Hearth was trying to say is that he didn't nesscesarily mean it's magick to paint a wall, he was comparing the intention used in magick to that intention you have when you paint a wall a colour that makes you feel a certain way since there is that intent behind it.
Same, I used to be an angry atheist, but I've noticed that the sense of nihilism stemming from that wasn't healthy & I'm now open to returning back into my new age-y/wiccan path or just any spiritual practice that I can channel my energy, especially as a healing & meditative outlet.
i have an absolute complete respect for you, because you really outline what is said and done in such an articulated way that is incredibly respectful to all parties. Thank you for your videos!
As a "newbie" secular eclectic witch...I just have to say...I LOVE your way of explaining the craft & breaking it down so it is understandable...I am binging on your videos!!! Thank you so much for your extremely USEFUL info for this beginner...much love & appreciation!
I (20 years pagan) actually have one of my staff being a muslim (I'm a pagan witch, recently called by both Hekate and Odin. I know weird couple) So i'm now in the religion thing. And he told me they do have witches and put me in the good witches corner. (I'm an high empath, nice when it's your boss i guess lol) and witches and muslims can work out. He do ask me questions and even his mother ask him to '' Ask your witch boss''. We have very spiritual conversations and we are thinking the same.
When I WAS a Christian, I'd've thought, "This is satanic!" In regards to any way of believing, including the things mentioned in this video. Now that I am no longer Christian, I'm like, "This is cool! This is so different!" And, oddly enough, you're really helping me with my religious trauma because your channel represents freedom and living your life (for me anyways). Thank you very, very much. I have really enjoyed this video and I look forward to watching more of your videos. Love from South-east England 🇬🇧 ❤
Can you react to or talk about your favorite / least favorite shows representing witchcraft? Like Charmed (even new vs old) or The Craft or whatever? Like what you like & dislike about them and if they have any aspects based in the actual craft or historical practices? It could be an interesting series! I love getting your take on things, it's so well researched an non judgy!
What I love about these guys from the witchcraft community is that they are so calm and polite speaking to Jaclyn who is actually quite arrogant and teasing. It’s like “well, my truth may be different from yours, but my path is different from yours”. Witchcraft people are so full of inner harmony and balance and so unwilling to judge anyone even if they do not agree with the views of that person. That’s free will anyway; anyone can go up or down, or choose their own path, because everyone comes here with a different purpose and for a different reason. Love your video and your opinion! Many thanks for it. ✨
Your my friend now. *highfives* ah yes finally a witch who likes loz. Which games are your favorite? Mine are links awakening and majoras mask. Been meaning to pick up a copy of the minish cap as well.
That one got me as well. I'm wearing a grey Slytherin quidditch hoodie and paint covered grey skinnies, pretty much the furthest thing from robes and pointy hats possible
I feel like she’s being rude showing how visibly sceptical she feels about witchcraft. It’s just disrespectful because they wouldn’t do it if it was about other beliefs and practices. It’s like this whole video is trying to portray witchcraft as a practice as something silly. It would’ve been better if the host was someone that had a more professional standpoint. One that isn’t so visibly judgmental and where they’re not constantly shutting down the information from the people they’re interviewing are sharing. It’s just very insensitive.
Hi. My father was a preacher and I identify as a heathen. If it wasnt for him I might be a bit ruder due to the genocide toward our kind and innovents accused because of hypocrites. Like they in thier skepticism like to validate my belief system and practice I like to ask them how they feel about the attrocities of thier religion purputrated that so conflict with the philosophy it was evolved from the roman empire used to build a greater empire for themselves by subverting the pagans/outlaying heathens of regions they invaded? The response from one street preacher I asked that after he saidcwoman should be submissive to men as the bible teaches was thats a question for a theologian. And he walked away lol
well no she has been disrespectful and rude about other religions, specifically christianity and makes content about it the most (other things too) it’s just stupid edgy behavior of trying ti look smart or cool by criticizing religious/spiritual content and beliefs
It's so important to offer education like this to deconstruct all of the negativity around witches and witchcraft. Public reaction has always been a sore spot and keeps many of us silent about such a meaningful aspect of our lives. Thank you for this.
Phew I'm not the only Witch that watches Jaclyn Glenn. I've been anxious to watch her video. I mean, I would react to a penis candle like that too because you don't see penis and vagina candles being sold in regular stores. 7:36 *sees a Poseidon statue* Me: *Squeals* . I LOVE that it shows a male witch."Magick is an assistant not a fix" *chef's kiss*. I agree about him using the term "spirit" that's confusing, I think "energy"/"essence" would work better. I think the video should have been double the time it was or even longer. Can you please react to Strange Aeons reaction to Witchcraft Tumblr?
I appreciate jaclyn for getting eugenia cooney into treatment (even if just for a while) & getting out of a really toxic relationship, but I always felt off about her views around religion in general especially as an ex christian so I’m glad people share that view of her too!! even though I’m now agnostic (I’m on & off-interested in witchcraft so I’ve never fully gone into practicing it) I still think religion has its place in the world as long as it isn’t harming others, & nobody should be discriminated against solely based off religion/religious beliefs
23:20 this is so true. I went to a doctor during the COVID outbreak cause my mind kept telling me I had it and giving me symptoms, and the doctor told me it was in my mind and when I left... all of those "issues" disappeared.
As an outsider to this community, I’m really glad that I stumbled upon this video! I love how it was presented and done, super respectful and informative. I didn’t feel talked down to Bc I’m not educated in this kind of stuff. Definitely will be checking out more videos!
I was 90% done with an annoyed comment when we got to the end of the video and you gave us a lot more information than the video itself -- and Jaclyn herself ended with a much more intelligent and respectful conclusion than much of the video seemed to indicate was going to happen. (I am SO glad I waited to click the "Comment" button!) The way the video has been edited, it definitely delivers a much higher percentage of snark than I felt was respectful... but the explanation puts it all into perspective. And yeah, I'll add my voice to those calling out Buzzfeed for plagiarism.
I love how you come at these from such a well informed place. I definitely hated the editing, even if it was to cut SR out of the original, but I think a lot of people can learn from your reaction, and hopefully they'll get a more educated view on what they've watched here xx
her expression when she replies to him and the jokey music makes the whole video so disrespectful. put on that backing track and smirk while speaking to a pastor or imam and youd be cancelled.
My philosophy proffessor often says that you can't ignore someone's personal testimony. Like you can't buzz out the human element when you are a skeptic, because then you just completely ignore an entire peice of the puzzle.
The video in question aside, I love your reaction videos cause you thoroughly discuss the things you're reacting to. So many reaction style videos (of any content, not just witchcraft content) is so surface-level and provides little actual commentary. Usually reaction videos are a cheap way to get views but considering your video is almost 4x the length of the original and the original isn't even in this video in full really speaks to how much feedback and insight you give in your reactions. Love these types of videos when they're done right and you are definitely doing it right!
Ok once you had the realization of social repose being edited out being a huge part of weird editing i was like OH THANK GOD bc i love jaclyn so much and wanted to believe she was being respectful
I’m only a few minutes in and I’ve already subscribed. As a Catholic witch, I really appreciated you talking about how witchcraft is not a religion itself and that their can be Christian witches. In Catholicism, I’ve noticed that their are so many practices that are essentially witchcraft without the intention of it being witchcraft, such as lighting candles for prayers, the priest turning the wine and wafer to the body and blood of Christ, etc.
Omgs! If people knew what we really do vs what they THINK we do they’d be so bored! lol. And totally made my day to hear you happy to see a male Witch. Lotsa people I run into into the craft are women, and not all “happy” to see a male practitioner. You rock!
There is a difference in someone approaching a subject with an open mind, and a person approaching a subject with their mind made up ahead of time. One is honest, the other is not. One is a joy yo behold, the other is obnoxious.
I consider myself a heathen. I dumb it down for mundanes and say witch when they question what a heathen is. But I also like the term sorceress given they were known as practitioners advanced enough to not practice actively ascmuch as study and research the science of magic
@@dhl1288 A Heathen is also another word for someone who practices Norse Paganism. Please be careful in saying that, you could be accidentally putting a label onto millions.
I don’t understand why people seem to think that something being placebo some makes it less effective if it still works. Like I know it sounds kinda cheesy to say “belief is a powerful thing” BUT ITS TRUE!!!!
You're very eloquent in this. Thank you for your thoughts on this video. I have watched a few of her videos previously and I did like her but it does feel uncomfortable to watch her laugh and belittle the practice/ the people. Even the music used in this video makes it seem like a joke or a comedy programme. It's troubling for sure. I really appreciate your opinion on it. It is helpful to have some solid ways to respond to these misconceptions that are clear and that don't confuse people or lead people astray. It's great you got to the bottom of the edit in the video though! It actually sounds like she's learnt a lot at the end Xx
I feel like Griffin, in attempting to explain the components of spellwork to this young woman's satisfaction, probably said that we all intuitively understand "color correspondences" and use them in our own lives already -- it's why a Valentine card is red or pink instead of "electric green" -- and that a lot of so-called "magic" works on that same unconscious or intuitive level. (I frequently explain to skeptics that a rose quartz is a "reminder," like a string around my finger, to maintain peace and a happy home. Amazingly, this is Jaclyn's takeaway at the very very end of the video, so that's excellent!) It also seems like Griffin is using "spirit" in the super-literal Judeo-Christian sense (as in the root word for both "inspiration" and "respiration," literally the breath of the divine). His explanation probably makes perfect sense to anyone who grew up in the Church, but might be bewildering to anyone who isn't Anglican or an etymologist. Anyway, I really appreciate this video's analysis; it's the type of informed video I would hope a young searching person would find.
Not watched the whole video yet, but honestly Jaclyn Glenn has shared her views on non-binary people in a video called “Two Genders”, I used to like her before I found out her views which tbh are transphobic. As someone who is trans I just can’t ignore this
I unsubscribed from one young guy who doesn’t believe in people being non-binary, he says that if a person, has body dismorphia then he says it’s possible.
@@KitsuneAdorable Let me guess, Kalvin Garrah? Allot of insecure trans youth hate on non-binary people as a way to make themselves feel more valid in their trans-ness. Needless to say most of them I've known eventually grew out of it and realized they had more in common with them, than they did differences.
She did say at one point in a later video she mostly believes in two genders but had opened up to the possibility of some variance, I don’t remember her next statement exactly but it sort of implied “it isn’t really important what I think about another person’s identity.” Still not particularly fond of her views on things, or people she associates with. I really liked her content when I was a very strictly non-spiritual atheist and angry about how religion had been forced on me as a child, specifically Christianity. She makes a lot of good points about issues in organized religion but I don’t agree with a lot of things she says, I watch some things by her still but I’m not as much of a fan as I used to be.
The way that guy explained it was really good and the way you expanded upon that made it even easier to understand! I'm pretty new to this craft so thank you! These things can be a bit overwhelming so it's really helpful to see it simplified like this!
I love watching your videos, hearing your opinions and explanations. I always think I do know all these things you explain, but every time I realize I don’t 😄 I’m still a beginner (practicing for a year now I’d say) and still learning so much.
As a pagan believer practicing witchcraft - that you for your wonderfully correct explanation. It bothers me a lot, that people get confused like "ok, so you want to be a viking?" "No, I am a pagan believer - totally different thing." "But, you believe in viking stuff, but you still pray to satan?" "Satan is a christian concept and does not exist in my pagan believe. Witchcraft is my way of selfcare and an actual craft - paganism is my way of believing and praying to the gods and my ancestors." But still, people loosing their sh*t...
I really loved hearing your take on this. I was expecting the patronizing stance from Jaclyn but I'm glad she was able to see past the stereotypes in the end.
I dont consider myself as a witch but im very interested in witchcraft for almost a year now, reading books and watching YT videos here and there. I love how specific you are and explain in details~ I learn a lot by watching this video~ =D
This is definitely not skepticism. This was made with the idea of debunking in mind. Skepticism is being more neutral and open minded. Atheists esp. on TH-cam have been misusing this word to describe themselves.
As someone who grew up in church, but lost faith and left, and have slowly been learning about the basic principles of witchcraft over the years, I realize that all the stuff we supposedly condemned in church, we were actually practicing ourselves. Surprisingly my increasing interest in witcraft has actually reaffirmed some of my faith (although I still have a lot of problems with much of modern Christian culture), and now I'm at a place where I'm finally reconciling that magic, science, and religion can all coexist in the same space. Finally, after many years of self-imposed spiritual blinders up (becuase I needed to unlearn a lot), I feel connected again to the same divine spirit I grew up believing in, but interacting with it in a more honest way. 2020 has been a very interesting year for me.
I actually do use the word "wizard" to describe myself sometimes, and I associate the word "Wizard" with the Hermetic tradition, and a syncretism of Qabalah and paganism, whereas "witch" is much much broader, although it does carry a more animist or pagan connotation.
I'm so glad you brought up the editing being used to make things look not as theybreally are. This is the reason I have issues with these type of videos. And shorter videos don't have the time to really show all that needs to be seen. I also feel that even if this was edited by someone else it is her video and she should be sure it is presented with respect.
I absolutely appreciate this video (2 years late). As a Druid, I run into the same misconceptions. Druidry is a philosophy and not a religion, and you can be a Christian Druid or Pagan one or a non-religious one. I laways thought Witchcraft was a religion until I learned that Wicca is a religion and witchcraft is a craft. Thank you for clearing it up so perfectly.
I 100% agree with your reaction!! I like Jaclyn too but they edited this in a disrespectful way. This is not a skeptic's guide at all. Skeptics are open minded. Jaclyn is a more hardcore atheist, and these atheists have been misusing the label "skeptic" to describe themselves, when in reality their mind is already made up that nothing currently not proven by science is real. It's a very short sighted and silly view, and the contrary of a skeptical view. But I did like that she ended on positive thoughts though.
I am pausing at 17:46 to comment on what you are currently talking about at this moment. I'm going to keep watching but I just wanted to comment on how well you communicate. You interpret his words and then expand on them in such an illustrative, specific way and I just appreciate that skill. Carry on ❤
Thanks for the insight Hearth. I never thought it would lead to this, but here I am, a brand new "male" spellcaster. I look forward to more of your videos. Wes
Hi Hearth. Thanks for everything. You were one of my first contacts with witchcraft. I used to condemn it but thankfully I lightened up, opened my mind, and decided to try practicing and it's thanks to content producers like yourself and Arith Harger that I've found a more spiritual path in life and I've actually been able to yield some amazing and very positive results in my practice and workings. The fact that you're still producing content reminds me, I need to get back on my magick horse and keep it going on the correct paths. It got me really far in a short amount of time and I really should be treating it as more of such than I currently am. Thanks!!!
i was talking to my boyfriend at the bit she laughed and said "people don't laugh at Christians praying or Muslims praying or any mainstream religion or something...how is this okay? it's so so rude"
How many times can I say "Edit" in one video 😂
I count 25 times you say edit, edited, or editing.
🤓
Were you born into witchcraft because you seem young and you said you practiced for 15 years. Just curios blessed be❤
Totally agree with you!! It’s true that editing makes or breaks a message in a video
You might have heard of, Witch N The Working? He's a male witch. I love his channel. Definitely worth checking out.
I would like to look into that information a bit more, because it sounds interesting ^^
So it might work similar as black cumin? (because mildly tic repellent)
magick and science are one in the same
Izayah Hester no they aren’t.
Thor: "Your ancestors called it magic, but you call it science. I come from a land where they are one and the same."
I'm a skeptic yet a witch.
I love that quote. ❤️❤️❤️
This is what really pisses me off about skeptics in general. They think their lack of belief can justify a lack of actual research.
@@thatbitch3254 Absolutely! I consider myself to be athiest/agnostic, and have been practicing for nearly ten years now
ExACTLY!!!!
This is common with her. Her audience, if I had to guess, is mostly 18-22 year old boys.
17:53 Yes... it IS science. Science IS part of magic! Magic = Science + Art + Spirituality
Yes! Witches in the past practiced magick as a science, but had a well regard for spell work vs medicine!
It comes hand in hand with science yes but it's not JUST science
There are also atheist witches, atheism is just lacking a belief in a god/ gods or goddess and it just seems that this was poorly researched. She can understand that atheism isn't a religion but just didn't bother with witchcraft? Or at least to clarify that for her audience.
I’m an atheist practitioner.
i am an atheist witch :)
actually thank you so much for this comment katelyn because i often feel excluded due to my atheism, and you made me feel a lot better :)
This! People of all beliefs can practice witchcraft. I’m fairly agnostic when it comes to deities, and I don’t really follow a specific religion. Witches come from all types of backgrounds and beliefs, whether they be Wiccan, Jewish, Atheist, or anything else!
There are witches who are religious, but the craft itself isn’t inherently religious. I think she confused Wicca with witchcraft as a whole
"youve probably walked past a witch and didnt even know it"
plot twist: i am that witch
Same :D
I'm a witch as well and I'm studying witchcraft as well as my girlfriend. I have friends who are witches and I have to say that if Jaclyn came to a ceremony she wouldn't last FIVE minutes in the Covenant. Just sayin.
walks past a mirror.... *gasp😦* a witch! lol
same thought
Yeah that would be me 😂
i dont think it matters if magick is placebo or not. placebo doesn't mean it doesn't work, if something works for someone then what's the problem?
The only time I'm against placebo effects is if it's making you think you cured something serious, like taking essential oils will cure cancer or some shit
But if you have a placebo of chamomile making you tired or relaxed enough to sleep easier, thats actually pretty good imo.
Edit: typos. I apparently can't spell pfft
@@raynethescribe2772 well obviously it won't make you think you 'cured' or anything serious but at least makes you think you're doing something in your power to help :)
placebo has a negative connotation, its basically reprogramming your subconscious which isn’t necessarily a bad thing, its witchcraft
no one ever talks about how the placebo effect just further supports the argument of how powerful our minds are.
@@Junkinsally I'm not referring to a bloodline

knowing Jaclyn, probably. I like some of her content but she's one of those atheists that just.... has no respect for religion
Luna Anne ugh, I hate those kinds of atheists.

@@honeymilk2737 oh my gosh no, hearth would never lol
I don’t get why people even do things like just to basically mock it. If she’s such a skeptic she should just stay ignorant and leave it alone
Mythian Yes
"there's a line between being personally skeptical and being judgemental of other beliefs." Well said
I hate lavender too, it really does exacerbate my "headaches "
I love fresh or dried lavender... I absolutely despise lavender essential oil. I used to think I hated all lavender because everything 'lavender scented' uses the oil.
This is getting me emotional about the portrayal of the witches in the video (mainly about hearth's point around the herbal bag part). It really isn't kind to have painted it in a mocking "this is so weird" light.
I don't like how it's obvious throughout the video that she thinks it's just weirdo BS
@@screamingopossum7809 I'm an atheist witch and I fully agree with you, Especially regarding Mr. Atheist..
Yeah, there's a difference between being "skeptical," of a belief or action and being disrespectful of people's beliefs.
Don’t forget to mention the fact that they used “childish” music to make witchcraft seem like a joke. You know, the bump bump bad ump music.
I’m a Christian but I found out that there were Christian witches
I love how real and honest you are about the craft. Carry on 🙌🏼
I really enjoy your comments on this 👏👏👏 Unfortunately, as with many subgroups, the media portrays them in a horrible and stereotypical way (speaking from my own experience as a sex worker - and witch). And that can be so frustrating. I always enjoy when they actually interview someone that holds their ground and can talk in a way the masses will understand.
As a sex worker and witch I am curious yo ask if you incorporate sex magic in your practice?
Honestly I have a feeling it all has sexist connotations both of those crafts being women dominated and all
i know right? the same thing happened when steve harvey on his segment of "is this weird":/ it is so transparently scripted that one of the most famous bronies in the brony community tripped them up and this phony psychologist said that it might become obsessive if he is racing cars that represent characters from "my little pony", they even cut his hair and put him in this nerdy geeky vest that doesn't represent his style at all. in real life, dude talks like a surfer and wears black t-shirts and jeans, helps organize many conventions and charities donations, as well as host his youtube channel where he and others react to things, and the "psychologist" wouldn't stop stuttering when ac questioned why he thinks the way he does. the biggest point ac was trying to make was that being a brony for him means breaking a lot of gender stereotypes and how freeing it can be to enjoy something "girly" without fear of his masculinity being diminished, which i love:) so many men in multiple cultures are taught to be super tough by not expressing emotions, and it causes so much damage just like the damage of the madonna/whore complex does to women:/
generally most popular media does a huge disservice when they don't go in with an open mind when looking at something different from "the norm":/
Exactly! As much as Jacyln claims to a science nerd or whatever, she really doesn't know jack.
Yes!! I love the idea that plants have consciousness. I like those little devices that let you hear plants “sing”
People calling themselves "science nerds" most often are not, or only acknowledge the science that backs their original opinion lmao

It is also important to check carefully that you go to an independent medical practice and not to one that has been bought indirectly by a company through a clinic,

Presumably, people expect her to dress like what they think satanists dress like because atheism and satanism gets mixed up a lot, especially in the US.
And what's funny is, she actually kind of looks like a stereotypical witch.. at least to me.
The way she looks away and mumbles "ok.." as a reaction to these people sharing their beliefs is extremely disrespectful. Just because you can't understand it does not make you better than these practitioners.
Yesss, i kept seeing her say ok and look like she wanted to laugh. She was very condescending.
It might be the only one that allows filming inside, or has the space for a film crew.
Journalists being too lazy to do thier jobs?
because theyve seen other people do it and dont want to take the time to find a different one
They might pay for advertisement. Its not uncommon for businesses to contact content creators with deals like these.
It's probably because one person did a video there and so everyone else followed.
When she said “Horned beast” I almost screamed
Edit:
Thanks as always for your amazing videos ❤️
Would that be a Horned God?
As a video producer by trade I can tell you from watching this that she definitely edited this video with bias and her intention was not to show in any way that she was "on board" with what was happening. As the "producer" of her content, she would have had the final say on what was put into the video.
If she was asking a priest for a blessing, you damn well know she wouldn't laugh. Pure disrespect.
No she would. She hates all faiths. Shes one of *those* atheists.
It doesn’t surprise me that someone who’s made several transphobic, harmful videos would do a video mocking a sacred practice.
Has she not progressed from that? I assumed it was influenced by her relationship with blaire white
Can't find any transphobic vids on her channel
Where has she made those videos? I thought she was for trans ppl?
She and blaire did a vid going around asking which one of them looked trans.
”Whats this baby gonna do? I don't know, you don't know, the HERBS don't know, it's Mojo Rulette!”
Isn't "most of her content" mocking peoples' beliefs though?
She's the last of a dying breed of early 2000's "angry atheists". I do enjoy some of her content, but well researched, she was not.
Mr.Repzion used to be an Angry Atheist. I'm SO GLAD he grew out of that phase. Jaclyn did not.
I used to be an angry atheist. I was so unhappy. Finding witchcraft made me open up a bit more on it.
Well she is known for plagiarism, so you shouldn't be surprised that she isn't well researched
Same, I used to be an angry atheist, but I've noticed that the sense of nihilism stemming from that wasn't healthy & I'm now open to returning back into my new age-y/wiccan path or just any spiritual practice that I can channel my energy, especially as a healing & meditative outlet.
I used to be an angry atheist and now I'm a baby witch xD
i have an absolute complete respect for you, because you really outline what is said and done in such an articulated way that is incredibly respectful to all parties.
I would love to meet this Muslim employee of yours, they sound like it would be a great time and an interesting conversation.
I second this! Sounds awesome.
... I can listen to the head witch talk all day. His voice is so soothing~~
“Its not something you are, its something you do” 👏👏👌
“Witches wear long robes and pointy hats!” And here’s me with my pink and purple hair and my Zelda tshirt. Nice😂
Nymphadora? Tonks is that you?
Your my friend now. *highfives* ah yes finally a witch who likes loz. Which games are your favorite? Mine are links awakening and majoras mask. Been meaning to pick up a copy of the minish cap as well.
That one got me as well. I'm wearing a grey Slytherin quidditch hoodie and paint covered grey skinnies, pretty much the furthest thing from robes and pointy hats possible
She is so condescending.
She's an atheist. They think they know everything.
RavenTube welll......yea 😂
RavenTube I have no problem with atheists, I love them, but she has consistently been rude and disrespectful
She seems to have a superior complex
Viv she has been very islamophobic in the past
And he walked away lol
well no she has been disrespectful and rude about other religions, specifically christianity and makes content about it the most (other things too)
it’s just stupid edgy behavior of trying ti look smart or cool by criticizing religious/spiritual content and beliefs
29:20 Your critique is SPOT. ON.
Feeling a little triggered about the way shes all condescending.
As an outsider to this community, I’m really glad that I stumbled upon this video! I love how it was presented and done, super respectful and informative. I didn’t feel talked down to Bc I’m not educated in this kind of stuff. Definitely will be checking out more videos!
Ugh this video of hers annoys me because she's being disrespectful and condescending about it
I was 90% done with an annoyed comment when we got to the end of the video and you gave us a lot more information than the video itself -- and Jaclyn herself ended with a much more intelligent and respectful conclusion than much of the video seemed to indicate was going to happen.
I appreciate how graceful, eloquent and knowledgeable you are.
her expression when she replies to him and the jokey music makes the whole video so disrespectful. put on that backing track and smirk while speaking to a pastor or imam and youd be cancelled.
27:00 LOOOOOOOL, Hearth. You're killing me with your deadpan stare at the camera.
My philosophy proffessor often says that you can't ignore someone's personal testimony. Like you can't buzz out the human element when you are a skeptic, because then you just completely ignore an entire peice of the puzzle.
I love how she explains everything and I also love how she looks like Liz gillies
My parents just said "its like youre wiccan" with all my flowers drying upside down 🤣🤣🤣🤣
The video in question aside, I love your reaction videos cause you thoroughly discuss the things you're reacting to.
Scott Cunningham uses the term “magician” 🧙♂️
I, as a non binary, use mage. I like the word.
I love the fact witches don't discriminate based on gender when it comes to practicing the craft 😊👍🖤
Thank you for this! I really appreciate your honest and respectful perspective. Sooooooooo refreshing 💜
You are one of my favorite witchcraft TH-camrs. You have the best videos imo. So much information! Thank you!
I know this is my third comment, but I just love that your mug, that holds liquid, has the witch's rune for water!
Amazingly, this is Jaclyn's takeaway at the very very end of the video, so that's excellent!)
It also seems like Griffin is using "spirit" in the super-literal Judeo-Christian sense (as in the root word for both "inspiration" and "respiration," literally the breath of the divine).
I never knew she posted a video like that! Will definitely have to take a look and evaluate my opinions on her
I’m a transitioning non binary... damn. Makes me totally ignore what that disrespectful piece of trash said completely. That’s miserable.
Witchcraft is my way of selfcare and an actual craft - paganism is my way of believing and praying to the gods and my ancestors." But still, people loosing their sh*t...
i have been a fan of jaclyn for a long time but i always wanted to know your opinion on this video, because i love you both.
I really loved hearing your take on this. I was expecting the patronizing stance from Jaclyn but I'm glad she was able to see past the stereotypes in the end.
I think it's interesting to note that in eastern medicine they utilize the energy of the body to heal. And to me that is majick in and of itself
I dont consider myself as a witch but im very interested in witchcraft for almost a year now, reading books and watching YT videos here and there. I love how specific you are and explain in details~ I learn a lot by watching this video~ =D
Skepticism doesn't give anyone an excuse to be disrespectful or condescending about some else's practices and beliefs.
Huh, never thought of it like that. Thank you for sharing.
I'm so glad you brought up the editing being used to make things look not as theybreally are. This is the reason I have issues with these type of videos. And shorter videos don't have the time to really show all that needs to be seen. I also feel that even if this was edited by someone else it is her video and she should be sure it is presented with respect.
Any other religion or philosophy there would be an uproar
I've been a witch for 17 years and even I learned new things from this video. Definitely will be watching more of your videos, Hearth! Good work love
