    I'm glad that you took another step today, assisting yet to another facet of the band. And the style approached perfectly fits the theme of the song, presented so poetically in the lyrics: the death of romance.
    Let me tell you a "secret": many Nightwish fans (including myself) have not always listened to metal. Nightwish, as well as other symphonic metal bands, are a "gateway" for us to this musical land. Come with us, and you will enjoy the harmonies of metal :)

    • @mykindamakeup
      @mykindamakeup 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I so agree with this so much. I enjoy a good hard metal tune (death and black metal, mostly) just as much as any genre out there.
      I wonder what she'll think of Shoemaker. Which version would you recommend as a first time listen, gabriel?

    • @sulliken77
      @sulliken77 2 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Nightwish as a "gateway drug".. That was new one for me.. 😆😅
      I started out with Deep Purple, Iron Maiden, DIO, Manowar, Rage Against The Machine, Pantera and Machine Head . In that order 🙂 Those bands sealed me to Metal for life. I loved a lot of other bands as well. But those I mentioned have a high star in my world.
      Nightwish came up on my radar a few years later when they released the Gary Moore cover "Over the hills and far away" and "Nemo". And the rest is history.

      @@mykindamakeup Regarding Shoemaker, the options are: the official lyrics video, the virtual concert from May 2021, and the 3 professionally recorded concerts from 2022, Pinkpop, Hellfest and Deichbrand. For me it is a difficult choice. I would probably recommend Deichbrand 2022, although the recording from the 2021 virtual concert is superb, even without an audience.

      @@sulliken77 For me, that's exactly how it was :) I remember listening to some Scorpions ballads with pleasure in my youth, when I attended some party - but it wasn't the music I would have chosen then. My "opening" to the metal genre appeared much more recently, after I passed 40 - 45 years. I remember how much I liked the cover made by Prodigy after Enya (which I adored) and what an inner conflict I was living then because of that!.. Then I started listening to Nightwish, in which I found a certain energy that I started to resonate with, I think , after a certain level of maturity.

    • @ChrisPhoenixMusic
      @ChrisPhoenixMusic 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I've noticed this, too. I have been a metal fan since I was about 7 or 8, so Nighwish was not by far the heaviest thing I'd heard of. I started out with anything from Led Zeppelin and Queen to Annihilator and Sepultura.
      When Oceanborn came out I realized I had been craving that classical female voice with heavy power metal and symphony and NW absolutely nailed it. I'd already been into the early years of symphonic metal and power metal, had listened to more progressive stuff (like Dream Theater, Helloween) and also the heavier end of the spectrum (Cradle of Filth, Death) so while many people may not have much exposure to "actual metal" before Nightwish it should be noted that even for people who are perfectly familiar with how heavy music can really get they are still very special in many ways, which I think you agree is true.

    Song is about the death of a Romance, not necessarily the actual death of a person. The lyrics to me are about exploring a toxic relationship, acknowledging your own role in creating it, recognizing it, and having the strength to leave it.

      Exactly - if you listen closely it's really "O.D. of lies is killing me" as in an overdose, rather than "ode" as in poetry. Marko and Floor are playing the partners in the toxic relationship: Nightwish often include a bit of musical theatre in their arrangements like this (tone follows content too).

    Love that 3 octave glissando that Floor does in tandem with Marko. The studio version, from the Tarja era, only has his 2 octave slide.
    This is one of their heavier songs, and one of the few that Emppu really shreds on, as he , and the band , play what is needed for the song. They aren't out there to show off.
    Marko sings backing or co-lead on a lot of songs, and lead on a few, including The Islander and their cover/tribute of Pink Floyd's High Hopes. He was lead singer of a band called Tarot before joining Nightwish.
    Very good breakdown on the lyrics. Yes, the song is about a romance that has died, it's over, time to move on. Song # 11 in this set, GLS was # 13, Storytime #6.
    You don't need to follow Gabriel's list in order. We do recommend you use his list for links.
    It's ok to pause, you can go back a few seconds to make sure you don't miss anything before resuming.
    Recommend Song of Myself next. Gabriel does what he does in memory of Ann Waychoff, this was her favorite song.

    1) I love how deep you go into this. Most reactors just watch the thing, say a few words, and that´s it. But you even go through lyrics and try to find the meaning, even though with Tuomas´ poetry it´s tough.
    2) I learned from psychologist Jordan Peterson that one has to integrate their shadow, so they cannot be pushed around, and they can stand for themselves. That´s what happens in metal in my opinion. What I´ve seen here in comments are people who can bite, no doubt, but have consciously decided not to. And that´s what make them good, and that´s why the atmosphere in comments is so positive.

    Thanks for the open mindedness to check these types of songs out. It is just all about the proper vibe for the story of the lyrics. This one is all about a bad relationship coming to the end of the line. Romanticide is all about the death or killing of romance. Time to move on and find a new love.
    Musical dynamics are one of the keys to great storytelling and emotional impact.
    There are many softer songs to come. Hang in there. Loved it Rosalie! 🙏🙏
    Being into psychology as you are, I will be very interested in your reaction to one of Tuomas' artistic masterpieces, "Poet and The Pendulum". It is loosely inspire by the Edgar Allen Poe story "The Pit and The Pendulum". A psychological horror story. However, before you check it out you should learn a little bit about the backstory. It involves the firing of the 1st Nightwish vocalist Tarja. The original fans loved her for her unique operatic vocal style. The were very unhappy when she was fired and Tuomas was the target of their disappointment and scorn. This song was written in response to the mental anguish and depression that followed. When you are ready, be sure to do the Wembley 2015 version with lyrics. This way you will be able to follow the imagery and poetic metaphors used to convey the emotion and turmoil of the composition.

      @@rosalieelliottofficial I´ll agree that you should do at least one or two songs with Tarija before doing "Poet and the pendulum" even I also agree that especially from the psychological aspect this song is a "must do" for your channel.
      My Personal favourites of Tarija performances are "Phantom of the opera - live end of an era", "Sleeping sun - official video" and also to show that Tarija and Floor are still friends the performance of them two in 2013 where they perform Gary Moore´s "Over the Hills". There are two unofficial videos of that song on youtube. Not sure though which one has the better quality but here´s one of them th-cam.com/video/XGwmQk_bBNg/w-d-xo.html
      You may also notice that they had some issues with Floors mic in that session.
      They know each other a long while now and if my memory works correct Floor asked Tarija if it´s ok for her if she would join Nightwish.
      As Tarija and Floor are still friends (in the pandemic they also made some live videos together on Instagram) Toumas and Tarija from my understanding are not so much friends anymore. Hard to say what they exactly think about each other today as both try to not talk to much about it.

    You'll always find poetic lyrics with Nightwish, a story, a fantastic composition, even when they're going into something like "Yous is an Empty Hope." It's always artistic. There's such a range in what they do, and it is very, very well thought out, with intricate changes and transitions. Part of the joy of Nightwish, beyond the joy and passion of all of them on stage, and the energy of the crowd, is every time you hear the same song again, you'll find new little details and things to appreciate. Floor's 3 octave glissando might be one of the most impressive things in this song, but you get Empuu able to show a little more of his flair on the guitar, Marco showing one side of his voice, Jukka going to town with the double kick.
    As you explore more Nightwish, one thing to maybe listen for, among so many, is Empuu's guitar solos. I point that out, because in a lot of metal, it's a real staple for the guitar solos to be really flashy, longer, with a lot of fast notes, "shredding" it. Empuu is really talented, and really understated. His style is more to give the song only what it needs. You'll see melodic solos, as in Ghost Love Score, where he picks up the melody of the vocals for a bit and echoes it. Sometimes he'll be the transition, and the last guitar note will lead directly into the vocal phrase. I think he carries a lot of emotion in the tones he plays, too, like in Nemo. There's a lot more you could focus on, I only raised Empuu here because here, you get to see him shred it a bit more than you might usually. 🙂
    Anyway, great reaction!

    • @Harbor-S
      @Harbor-S 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sahara, I believe, also references an ancient Arabic myth of the 1001 nights (Arabian Nights is the collective work, if I'm remembering correctly). The Pharoah thought that no woman was pure enough for him. The Visir's daughter eventually offered up herself. In order to keep the Pharoah from killing her in her sleep (he had a tendency to behead the former wives while they slept), she would tell him a bedtime story every night, but not tell him the ending until the next morning. Thus, the 1001 nights. I believe I have stated that correctly, please someone correct me if I'm wrong! I'm working off of memory, not checking Google at the moment. I love how Tuomas weaves in literature and myth into his works! It's one of my many favorite things about Nightwish!

    You saying Floor is a 'Powerhouse' is a great way of recognizing all of her talent not only vocally but also her stage presence and crowd control and acting the part and looking the part and everything in between... in general it's how she "commands the stage" as others have said, and that's why she's -to me- the absolute best singer out there. I love your enthousiam haha. When Tuomas is writing a song he is always imagening how it would be as a little movie. That's why his songs are not standard. Also, when he has finished a song, he is always thinking if he could change it a bit by using other instruments. Therefore it takes him a lot of time to finish an album.
    Funny you spoke of Shakespeare. From their latest album Human Nature the song "Shoemaker" has a quote from Romeo and Julliet in it. The song is about Eugene Shoemaker, an American geologist and astronomist. He also worked for NASA He wanted to be an astronaut but due to being diagnosed with Addison's disease he was not able to become one. Instead he trained astronauts. In 1997 he died in a car crash in Australia. As a tribute Nasa send a probe with part of his ashes to the moon. He is the only person who is buried on another planet. The quote from R&J is inscribed on on his burial capsule. The last part of the song is made by Floor. It is really a very emotional song! Hope you'll react to it!

    Great reaction and "think tank moment" afterwards , so you can understand Tuomas's WONDERFUL LYRICS .
    Every song/melody, has a message behind it.
    Tuomas is not "only" our METAL MOZART... He's a Poet as well.
    And...just so you know...; Tuomas composes ALL THE INSTRUMENTS, in every song.
    And then he sends it to the very talented musicians and singers in London.
    So Tuomas KNOWS EVERY BACKGROUND NOTE, in everything you as the audience hear on stage.
    After sending these notes to London Symphony Orchestra, Tuomas travels there and listens to them play his music. And if there's a discrepancy in just "one note"; our Metal Mozart will hear it. 😘
    He's so talented!; and of course they ALL ARE. ❤❤❤
    You should try listening to "My Walden" next. Just to get Nightwish's AMAZING DIVERSITY.
    "This mission report was written by Sargeant Emma, Las Vegas Chapter of The Nightwish Army"

    We love it when you don't stop. The facial expression says it all. 😁🤘🤘 This is Nightwish.
    Since you mentioned Floor's body. She has a small ranch with horses. This woman smashes her fence posts herself with a sledgehammer.
    Lyrics in metal usually draws its power from people's anger. Nightwish draws the strength more than any other band I know from love. Deep, important messages in the songs when you look behind the poetry.

    Love your reactions Rosalie! I think you are spot on with the lyrics. Still to me it is a pity that many reactors cut off Marko's introduction to this song (just before your video starts), because he explains Romanticide in a funny way.
    Anyways keep on exploring this huge rabbit hole and keep in mind it has a lot of side branches! One of which that is very dear to me is Ayreon. The Day that the World breaks down would be a good one to start with.

    Again, such a nice reaction, thank you. I think when you put real musical talents together with this synergy like Nightwish (+ the fans) it will always transcend genre. I am Dutch but I live in Indonesia, so when my friends started to ask me if I watch De Beste Zanger and if I know Floor, I was like, neh, I don’t do Dutch artists. My prejudice (and childish behaviour😂). So when her name kept popping up and I gave Gost Love Score a go to get it over with I was blown away, and I haven’t listened to Metal or Rock since mid 90’s. Now I need to see Nightwish at least 2 time a day😂 Can’t wait for your reaction to Devil and the Deep Dark Ocean, my all time favourite. Not many people react to it. For me it’s Ghost Love Score on steroids and it expresses each band members talent in a very raw way❤

    One of the other elements of what makes Floor so special is not only her voice, but her stage presence, charisma and confidence that comes through when she performs.
    I think you'll find that a LOT of metal is poetic. Yeah a lot of it deals with darker subjects, but they typically deal with life and the struggles that people face day to day.
    I think a band you would enjoy for it's very poetic songs that you would probably never think of as poetic song writing is Metallica. Especially their first 4 albums.

    Floor Jansen from her role in Nightwish or let's say her presence on stage , how she behaves , how she dresses, how she looks , how commanding she is and how self confident she appears (I read she suffered some depression in reality). So all these impressions of her remember me to a Valkyre, wich is basically a Germanic warrior goddes of fate , that chooses who dies on the battlefield to join her ranks in the afterlive. Or Morrigan wich is the Celtic goddess of death(a Crow)...that also decides who dies on the battlefield.

    This is definitely one of their heavier songs but they do go even heavier. I'm not sure if you would like it because Floor growls in some of them. I think it's great but you might not care for it since it's closer to the screaming.
    A song that I think you'll really love for its message, Endless Forms Most Beautiful. It's a song that helped me through a hard time in my life. It talks about the wonders of nature, existence, and life, and really is a love letter to how amazing the world is.
    Metal is a very big genre of music with a lot of fans. Just like with any other fandom there are bad people in it. But the way that many bands can explore the darker sides of humanity and show the anger and frustration at it is really cathartic. A band that you likely wouldn't enjoy but really sings about some of the darkest parts of humanity is Slayer. Now, I'm not suggesting you listen to them, they are very much in the growling screaming sound. That being said, they have songs that tackle genocide and other atrocities in a way that shows the anger towards those events.
    Metal, from my experience, is actually one of the most supportive communities I've come across. I remember some years back when someone was trampled to death in a hip hop concert but then, it was shown that a similar event almost happened at a metal concert. The band stopped the music to tell the audience to pick the fan up and talked about how that's what we do, we don't trample people because they've fallen, we help them up. It was a really good example of how metal is treated by society at large versus how it actually is.
