Fort Kochi, Fort Cochin in English, Cochim de Baixo ("Lower Kochi") in Cochin Portuguese creole, is a locality in the Cochin district of Kerala, India. The locality is 16 km away from Cochin city and takes its name from Fort Manuel of Cochin, the first European fort on Indian soil, annexed into the Portuguese East Indies. This is part of a handful of water-bound islands and islets toward the south-west of the mainland Kochi, and collectively known as Old Cochin or West Kochi. Adjacent to this is Mattancherry. In 1967, these three municipalities, along with a few adjoining areas, were amalgamated to form the Corporation of Cochin.
HISTORY:-
For many centuries up to and during the British Raj, the city of Kochi was the seat of the eponymous princely state. Muziris, a centre of global trade somewhere north to Kochi (presently identified with Kodungallur in Thrissur district), traces its history back many centuries, when it was the centre of Indian spice trade for hundreds of years, and was known to the Arabs, Yavanas (Greeks and Romans), Jews, and Chinese since ancient times. Kochi earned a significant position in Malabar Coast after the port at Kodungallur (Cranganore) was destroyed by massive flooding of the river Periyar in 1341.
The earliest documented references to Kochi occur in the books written by Chinese voyager Ma Huan, during his visit to Kochi in the 15th century as part of the treasure fleet of Admiral Zheng He. There are also references to Kochi in accounts written by Italian traveller Niccolò Da Conti, who visited Cochin in 1440. Today, Kochi is the commercial hub of Kerala and one of the fastest growing second-tier metropolises in India.
കേരളത്തിലെ എറണാകുളം ജില്ലയിലുള്ള കൊച്ചി നഗരത്തിന്റെ പടിഞ്ഞാറ് ഭാഗമാണ് വിനോദസഞ്ചാര കേന്ദ്രമായ ഫോർട്ട് കൊച്ചി. എറണാകുളം നഗരകേന്ദ്രത്തിൽ നിന്നും, റോഡ്‌ മാർഗ്ഗം 12 കി.മീ അകലെയാണിത്. ഒരു കി.മീ മാത്രമാണ് ജലമാർഗ ദൂരം. കേരളചരിത്രത്തിന്റെ സുപ്രധാനമായ പങ്ക് ഫോർട്ട് കൊച്ചിക്കുണ്ട്. സാന്റാക്രൂസ് ബസിലിക്ക, തുടങ്ങിയ പല വിനോദസഞ്ചാര ആകർഷണങ്ങളും ഫോർട്ട് കൊച്ചിയിലുണ്ട്. സെന്റ് ഫ്രാൻസിസ് പള്ളി (വാസ്കോ ഡ ഗാമയെ ആദ്യം അടക്കം ചെയ്ത പള്ളി ), ഡച്ച് സെമിത്തേരി, ചീനവലകൾ, തുടങ്ങിയ പല ചരിത്ര സ്മാരകങ്ങളും ഫോർട്ട് കൊച്ചിയിലുണ്ട്. ഒരുപാട് തദ്ദേശീയരും വിദേശികളുമായ വിനോദസഞ്ചാരികൾ ഫോർട്ട് കൊച്ചി സന്ദർശിക്കുന്നു. ഇന്ത്യൻ നാവികസേനയുടെ ദ്രോണാചാര്യ എന്ന കപ്പൽ ഫോർട്ട് കൊച്ചിയിലാണ് താവളമുറപ്പിച്ചിരിക്കുന്നത്. മട്ടാഞ്ചേരി കൊട്ടാരം അടുത്താണ്‌. കേരളത്തിലെ ആദ്യത്തെ യൂറോപ്യൻ ടൗൺഷിപ്പ് ആയിരുന്നു ഫോർട്ട് കൊച്ചി.
കൊച്ചി എന്ന പേരിനു കാരണം ഈ ഭാഗത്ത് ചേരുന്ന നദികളും കടലിന്റെ അഴിമുഖവുമാണ്‌. കൊച്ച് അഴി എന്ന പേരാണ്‌ കൊച്ചി ആയത്. എന്നാൽ ഫോർട്ട് കൊച്ചി എന്ന പേർ വന്നത് പോർത്തുഗീസുകാർ ഈ അഴിമുഖത്തിനഭിമുഖമായി കോട്ട കെട്ടിയതോടെയാണ്‌ (1503). ജനങ്ങൾ അങ്ങനെ കോട്ടക്കൊച്ചി എന്ന് ആദ്യം വിളിച്ചു പോന്നു. കോട്ടയുമായി ബന്ധപ്പെട്ട മിക്കവയേയും ജനങ്ങൾ കോട്ട ചേർത്ത് പറയുക സാധാരണമായി. ഉദാ: കോട്ടക്കാശ് (കോട്ടയിൽ നിന്ന് അടിച്ചിരുന്ന നാണയം), കോട്ടമാങ്ങ (കപ്പൽ വഴി കോട്ടയിൽ എത്തിച്ചേർന്നിരുന്ന വിദേശ മാങ്ങ. കോട്ടക്കൊച്ചി എന്നറിയപ്പെടുന്ന ഭൂപ്രദേശം ബ്രിട്ടീഷുകാരുടെ കാലത്ത് ബ്രിട്ടീഷ് കൊച്ചി എന്നും അറിയപ്പെട്ടു. എന്നാൽ ഫോർട്ട് കൊച്ചി ഇന്ത്യ സ്വതന്ത്രയായശേഷം കേരളസംസ്ഥാനം രൂപീകൃതമായശേഷം രൂപമെടുത്ത പേരാണ്‌. കോട്ട എന്ന ഗ്രാമീണപദത്തേക്കാളും ഗമ ഫോർട്ട് എന്ന ഇംഗ്ലീഷ് പദത്തിനുണ്ടായിരുന്നതുകൊണ്ടാവാം .
