Amazing documentary. Very informative. As a martial artist who trained with several masters in Bacolod city. I was saddened by the infighting among several masters of Kali/Arnis. In early 2000s there were several successes in joining them together on one event and mutual respect was achieved. Many of these masters passed away. To my late main Master Maxwell Maun of aikido/judo and Herada Pigada arnis, i am forever thankful.
10:45 I had the distinct privilege and pleasure to meet and train with Guro Dan Inosanto in the mid 1990s. The experience was memorable. The man himself was remarkably talented, knowledgeable and fun! He was gracious with his time, answered questions without reservation, signed autographs for everyone that asked, posed for photos with everyone that came to meet him and made sure everyone learned something and was glad they came. Which of course we all did and we all were. The man gave every impression of being a great master, a sincere and dedicated teacher, and a humble man. Which of course he is. :)

My late grandfather was Bastonero/Eskrimador on my mother side while my father and his brother are Doce Pares practioner from Mindanao... I learned from them just a bit.... And in my highschool Arnis is part of the curriculum.
This is amazing. As someone who is also on the journey of trying to understand the vast and rich landscape of our Filipino Martial Arts, this documentary has been the most extensive source in putting everything into perspective. A quick side note as well regarding the movie portion of this documentary, Filipino Martial Arts was also used in the Dune movie franchise. It is instantly recognisable to those who practice. This is our culture, our martial art, it is time it gets the recognition it deserves. Thank you for this.
Thanks for making this documentry, I must admit, with my experience and journey, I'm more focused on the moves rather than the culture and history - and I'm Filipino! Definately an eye opener... you've also touch on it as a spiritual journey... I have so much to learn...

Most or common Filipinos praised and gave credits to the Chinese martial arts whenever they watch movies of Bruce lee how very good he was in the action because most of us do not know that it's a Filipino martial arts. What happen to Filipinos? Can you bring that arts back to Philippines?

Integrate this martial arts to all our military and uniformed personnel and in school/universities. Make it mandatory. It is our national treasure na kaylangan matutunan ng lahat ng pilipino na magagamit natin kung kinakailangan.
I think teaching FMA in schools as part of the Physical Education curriculum would do wonders for the art and promote discipline among the youth of the country. The Dept.of Education should highly encourage such arts in schools.
One thing i regret to discontinue my learning when i was a kid. I promise to my self having a grand kids this Pilipino marshal arts they need to learn. Kudos to all Grand master! 🫡
I have not met a Filipino from the Philippines that know what 'Kali' is. We are talking people from Luzon to the islands at the ends of Mindanao. In Tagalog Luzon (from where I am from), 'Arnis' or more properly 'Arnes de Mano' is the name of weapons system developed by natives. (The weapons are all manner of blades and sticks of different lengths and 'hidden' weapons). 'Escrima' for us (I only ever heard it used in these contexts), are 'fencing' in general and European swords in particular. 'Eskrimahan' is 'swordplay' so used to describe either the act of fencing or a particular system of fencing i.e. Eskrimahang Hapon/Bisaya (Japanese/Visayan). You can see the old man making fencing wrist movements when asked about 'eskrima' and the association to 'sticks' when asked about 'arnis'. An obscure term used by my grandpa's generation for swordplay was 'estocado'. This referred to 'parry and thrust' European épée fencing. 'Sibakan' is another word I heard used to describe a bolo/itak fight/duel. The word connotes chopping/slicing at each other... In the Visayas, they use 'escrima' to refer to their native arts in their language.

My late Grampa from Capiz and he knew how to do stick and knife fighting. Sadly, I didn't get the chance to learn from him. He died because of wrong medication. He was treated for Tuberculosis, when he just had pollen allergy. All those government sponsored meds, f*cked up his Liver and Kidneys.
Good thing now, an animé and manga series recognize the FMA. It's called "Kengan Ashura". And one of the best fighter there is a character named Rolon "Lolong" Donaire, who specializes in "Silat" style. Hollywood action films and manga (comics) could be helpful for the Filipino Martial Arts to get known internationally.

in the 70's as a kid, we understood eskrima as the tagalog word of fencing. When we play escrima or eskrimahan, we use long bamboo stick with the plastic cap of nescafe serving as the foil guard. When we play espadahan, we use wooden sword made from tabla. Mostly patterned after the western sword. We havnet heard of arnis back then until we saw roland dantes in TV :) . Not knowing Arnis as FMA it is not that popular to us kids back then compared to eskrima and espadahan. When we want to play knife fight we call it saksakan. The only martial arts we know back then is judo-karate and kung fu. The first filipino martial arts I was exposed to is TRACMA when they did a demonstration in our place in the early 80s, not knowing that arnis is also FMA.

I think Kali is the oldest original Term for this "FMA". Esckrima evolves with the Visayans that incorporated Spanish. Visayans have been highly assimilated by the Spaniards as the first entry of the "colony" many of them meztizas. There should be a concessions among practitioners to use the term Kali as the original/oldest - a unique Tagalog ancient meaningful word to describe the FMA. Eskrima is stolen Spanish word. It is not native. Kali is Cultural native Tagalog word. Tagalog is Ancient and a native language. Kali represent culture, Peace, Freedom and Protection from our forefathers Filipinos. 😊

In most Visayas island stick fighting is common on Sundays where Challenges and fight are conducted. That's something missing in Luzon! The usual fight on Sundays as per my father are between suitors of ladies.
I do like the system of redirecting the Motion for an Opening Strike. It is a System that can be adapted to a Powerful Striking Hit. You do have to Have reflexes and Good Wrist but, the Entire Arm can be used. Japanese system isn't for flash it was Quicker finishes a Death injury move. With this it looks like more Rhythm motion so I could learn quicker with Music and with Yoga flexes could make this a Great MMA style.

The whole thing is a historical distortion. The more evolved, complex and advanced techniques with the blades are Spanish. Not original Filipino. The spanish had developed the most advanced combat fencing school of Europe at the time of colonizing philippines. With Italian and German fencing schools behind and trying to learn from them. The historical accounts show that a few dozen Spanish decidedly beating hundreds of east Asian troops. Whether the encounter is in japan or the philippin islands. How else do you think they have colonized the whole country with just a few ships on the other side of the world. Guns of the time were quite basic still. Relatively slow to load, short range and inaccurate, and would not provide enough military superiority where such a huge difference in numbers existed. No, the Europeans had a huge advantage, in not only technology and craftsmanship of weapons, but in all areas that a more advanced civilization affords. Thought, tactics, a school of military skill and arms, creativity of solutions, knowledge and experience to solve problems and so on. Enough already with the politically-correct-unscientific-nonsense. If we don't value the benefits of civilization we are going to loose it.
So why do most (if not all) EUROPEAN, American, canadian, australian, south african special force military units, Tactical police such as swatt, SOG, SRU and presidential body guards ALL train in the filipino combat system for their secondary weapons training and not a European system? I'm European blood myself but I can say from experience the filipino combat is the most practical system (depending on who's teaching it and for what purposes) has many dimensions, impact weapon (such as baton), sword, double stick, double sword, improvised weapons, knife, knife and sword plus hand to hand combat! If you do a bit research you'd probably find a new passion an addition to your European sword fighting skill set! 🙏

The Arnis in DepEd are adapting the Philiippine Karate Association (PKA) rules..mean 1970s-1980s rule..

In our school, arnis is being taught to learners who are interested. They are even sent to contests here around PH.
I really don't know if the school I graduated still teaches arnis. We do learned the basics, and just about it.

I think Kali is the oldest original Term for this "FMA". Esckrima evolves with the Visayans that incorporated Spanish. Visayans have been highly assimilated by the Spaniards as the first entry of the "colony" many of them meztizas. There should be a concessions among practitioners to use the term Kali as the original/oldest - a unique Tagalog ancient meaningful word to describe the FMA. Eskrima is stolen Spanish word. I do like the system of redirecting the Motion for an Opening Strike. It is a System that can be adapted to a Powerful Striking Hit. So why do most (if not all) EUROPEAN, American, canadian, australian, south african special force military units, Tactical police such as swatt, SOG, SRU and presidential body guards ALL train in the filipino combat system for their secondary weapons training and not a European system?
I'm European blood myself but I can say from experience the filipino combat is the most practical system (depending on who's teaching it and for what purposes) has many dimensions, impact weapon (such as baton), sword, double stick, double sword, improvised weapons, knife, knife and sword plus hand to hand combat!
If you do a bit research you'd probably find a new passion an addition to your European sword fighting skill set! 🙏
