Michelle, you are by far the best teacher of the bodhran on TH-cam. As a retired teacher of three decades, I appreciate your ability to start simple, at the beginning, & then slowly build on our prior knowledge, show us carefully, and repeat over and over. Excellent teaching! Do you mind if I ask you to show us how to play some of these various rhythms & dynamics with jigs or reels in the background? It would really help to learn to play along with the music. Again, thanks. You're amazing!!
thanks Michelle. I have had my bodhran for over year. I could make noise with it but did not understand how to make the different tempos. I loved the way you explained this. I am getting a beautiful new Bodhran for Christmas! I am working through your tutorials - thanks so much!
thank u michelle for taking the time and explaining each lesson in small steps.
Thank you Michelle for this lesson, it made so much sense and helped a lot!
Thankyou Michelle for your great vibes!! I just started playing and am SO grateful for the tools you give so freely and with such love ! Having learned other instruments I know the suffering you have saved me and my family :) I'm addicted :))
Absolutely fantastic. You are a wonderful teacher, very “user friendly” and easy to understand. Thank you for sharing your passion, skills and being so easy to watch and listen to. I’m a brand new player, thank you for all this work & lesssons. I hope you have a wonderful Christmas and a good New Year.
@susanshelit Doesn't matter if you have a single or double skin Bodhrán. Stroke dynamics do work. When you put your hand flat against the back of the skin you get a "mute". To get a tone or controlled resonance, you press against the skin with a small area of your hand. The less area touches the skin, the less likely you're to mute your sound. If you have problems with stroke dynamics, it's entirely possible that your skin is too tight (although I'm just speculating here).
lots of great info in there, I'm an intermediate/advanced player but always seeking to go back to "beginner mind", thanks very much for this!
I've tried a number o starter videos and yours a by far the most informative. Consequently I've progressed ver quickly following your clear instructions. I think some of the male demonstrators can't help but show off a little.
Great video, Michelle!! My 4 yo daughter and I enjoyed your lesson. She was really into it!!
Hi Michelle! Your lessons are amazing and are really helping me find my voice on the bodhran. I can't remember the last time I was so excited about learning a new instrument! I picked it up a couple of months ago to accompany my 12-year-old son who plays violin & my husband who accompanies us on guitar. Having strummed guitar for many years, I am more comfortable with the grip that you demonstrate as alternate to yours. QUESTION: In learning triplets & rolls, I switch to your grip. Is there a way to play them with the other grip? Thanks so much. You are amazing to share your talent & knowledge! Louise
I'm happy to hear that your background is in snare drumming. Is it pipe band drumming? I have a background in pipe band drumming. Do you think this is a significant advantage when learning to play bodhrán? I'm thinking it may also contribute to some bad habits too?
Finally getting around to watching various videos and practicing. I found watching Michele's hand movements really helpful. I wanted to slow it down to see exactly how much she was moving her wrist.... well, it did allow me to see the movement but when it's slowed down itI looks and sounds like Michelle's had a few too many drams of whiskey. (Sorry Michelle ;) )
thanks very much for this lesson ! Greetings from France :-)
Just learning - great lesson!
I have a single skin Bodhran. The only way I can dampen the resonation (short stroke) is by putting my hand against the back. Am I supposed to keep my hand against the back at all times and use these strokes to control the volume?
Thank you very much for this.. : )
nicely done Michelle!
