My father never spoke of the music that he liked. When I was a kid, he had Eagles greatest hits on cassette and that’s about all I ever heard him listen to. For whatever reason, when the video for Shine came on MTV, he would run into the room, turn the volume all the way up, and stare at the tv. That song really got to him. One of my favorite memories of my father.

So, when they had the 9-11 tribute on television, with so many different musicians of many different genres, Neil Young played Inagine while playing piano. A few weeks later, when we talked about the show, he ask me "Who was the guy that played the piano and sang that song 'Imagine' something ...." I told him it was Neil Young, and he loved it. He asked me if I like him, and I said "Dad, he is probably my favorite musician". He asked me what else does he do, so I gave him 9 of his CDs to listen too. At 75 years old, my Dad became a Neil Young listener... at times. It was a wonderful moment so late in our lives, for him to connect to what I have loved since I was a kid.

Agreed. I heard 2 or 3 of their songs on the radio before I realized what a brilliant band they were. I just love the sound of everything they do. They were always so underrated, it's really a shame, and even a little frustrating for me.
I also found them while in college in the early 2000’s and thought holy crap they played this song that I heard here and another one there and never knew who they were. Loved them since and have also enjoyed their live shows.

I met the band years ago. We were doing a special setup at Six Flags and they played a show. Not a lot of folks there but they played incredibly well anyway. We had special access backstage and they all came over and were so generous with their time. Great conversations and just a bunch of great people. Truly a nice memory.
The fact that he turned on a dime when you told him your father passed and focused in on you and him was the most impactful part of the video for me. What an amazing guy. I have my own "Shine" story, but it doesn't come close to that one split-second moment.
Yeah, Ed is always like that. I've seen several interviews where the interviewer brings up something in their livfe and Ed pivots to that rather than continue to take the spotlight.

You have no equal in what you do. I’m constantly directing friends to your channel. Thank you so much for your work. I’m 74 years old and my children got me into Collective Soul way back when Shine was first released. Over the next 15 years or so I saw them in concert 10 times in three different states. Obviously, I was a huge fan. My daughter was married in 2011 and my wife and I treated them to a Vegas vacation including tickets to see Collective Soul. My wife and I also went. The afternoon before the evening concert at the Hard Rock, I was wandering around the casino when I spotted none other than Ed Roland playing a machine. I debated confronting him, but just wanted to thank him for his music. When I approached. I said “Hi, Ed”. He turned to face me and just put a hand to keep his distance and shook his head. He blew me off. All the concerts, money, time out of the window with one simple gesture. I bring this up after watching your recent interview with him and calling him one of the truly nice people. All I can say is not always. A celebrity doesn’t have to do much too please a fan. Collective Soul has almost a cult following, he should be very grateful to fans like me. He could have just smiled and said hi, but he blew me off. I’m glad you have a good relationship with him. He won’t be getting any more of my money. Again, thanks for your compassionate work that you do.
I never thought of them as a Christian band, and he says he believes in the separation of church and rock, but his Southern Baptist upbringing really seeps into his music. So much of it is positive and uplifting. "The World I Know" is a great song, and the video is the most uplifting video I've ever seen.
8:30 "You wrote a prayer.". A lot of RocknRoll is exactly that, intentional or not. It's one of the reasons it resonates. It's ironic that it was labeled as the Devils music when it has helped so many, including myself, on their way back up from the depths.
Thank you for your in depth conversations with artists and bands that were never on my play list. It’s never too late to listen to and gain appreciation for a song or performers. In my 73 years I’ve heard a lot, but much of it just becomes background noise as life churns on.
When my students ask me what type of music I listen to, I tell them mood music. Thats whatever I'm in the mood for at the time. I also tell them that I don't have a favorite song, there are just to many great sings to choose from.
Thank you for the talk with Ed. I have seen Collective Soul a little over 20 times. If fact one summer my wife and 4 daughters traveled to Vegas, Phoenix, LA, and a couple other cities to see them. Got to the point that the guys recognized us and gave the girls picks and drum sticks and other stuff. We had the pleasure of hanging with them a few times and I have to agree with you, not just Ed, but all the guys, are some of the most genuinely nice guys you will ever meet. Several stories I could tell you, but they are just our personal stories and of no interest to anyone else. Can't wait to see them again soon!!
I'm from Central Florida, and our local rock station was one of the first to put Shine in heavy rotation (Ed even said as much when I saw CS in Orlando a few years ago) so by the end of the 90s I was burnt out on Shine and was much more into their newer stuff at the time. Now with the benefit of time I can go back and really appreciate what they did throughout the decade. Collective Soul in my opinion is one of those rare bands who never declined in quality. The only reason they stopped having hits was the industry shifted its focus from real rock and roll to something that appeals to the lowest common denominator. And they STILL rock so hard live. 🤘🤘
What a great interview and great guy. This helps me know and appreciate Shine. December is one of my favorite 90s songs. And may your father rest in peace, Adam. His musical influence on you seems to have helped birth this channel, where you keep some of the best music of the last 75 years alive.

The music from that era is even more appreciated today given the load of crap that radio stations play nowadays. There isn’t much variety, and you hear the same song several times in an hour.
Matt, you’re so right. So many songs back then used to have me screaming “stop” at the radio, including this one. But now they fill me with the warm inner glow of nostalgia and the knowledge that these were actually great songs.
Grew up 60s and 70s here and I love Collective Soul. They could rock it and with meaningful songs! He is still a solid guy. Stellar Records that definitely earn classic rock status!

Collective Soul is one of my absolute favorites. Every album, I would play over and over. Never got sick of it. Such a crucial part of my childhood in the 90's
I'm a GenX'er and they are huge in my book, too. Right now, their catalog is my "desert island" material. At other points in my life it was The Beatles or Billy Joel, but they have taken over in the last 20 years or so.
Love this song and album! My wife and I had the privilege of seeing Dolly perform this live a few years back. Gave me chills! Such a wonderfully powerful song! I'm a Baptist minister that still loves rock 'n' roll, and I still play it live with others or as a solo act. Great music is great music.

Wow Adam, first wanted to say how sorry I am to hear about your father. It has been 12 1/2 years since my father passed, and I think about him every day. He was a huge fan of Bob Seger, Linda Ronstadt, Toto, Genesis, Phil Collins, and so many more great musicians. I remember when he passed away, I had made a CD of his favorites and we played it at his wake. And I made sure that I put the CD in with him when I say goodbye. I have to stop for a minute to go wipe my face before I could finish writing this. I have to admit, I was not a big fan of Collective Soul initially. It wasn’t until I heard the second album. The song “Simple” is my favorite song by them. I love how the beginning of it is very misleading, and then the song just kicks in! And the recording is phenomenal.!! For some reason I thought you were older. I didn’t realize that you graduated high school and 94. You’re a baby. Lol! It’s amazing the amount of music knowledge you have, almost as much as me. Lol.! I graduated high school in 88. My friends call me the mayor. They’re always like the girl knows more about music and history of our neighborhood than anybody else. Lol.! One of my besties, Dana, she’s my vice mayor. Between the two of us, there’s nothing that we don’t remember about growing up in Boca Raton, Florida. This song hit me immediately, it spoke to me as well as it just rocked. I followed Collective Soul for the next ten years buying their CDs as they came out. They were one of the bands I actually bought a physical copy of any band. Now everything is available from streaming.

The 1st time I heard Shine was when it first started playing on the radio. I was driving and was absolutely elated to hear such deep, beautiful bass and real rock sound I, as a teen of the early 80s, had been craving and missing so badly. I nearly had to pull over so I could give it my full attention. Shine has such a deep, moving sound. I became a huge fan of Collective Soul and now have many favorites from them, but Shine will always be special (yeah).
I grew up in the '60's and early '70's and watched Disco, Punk, and Grunge replace the kind of music I fell in love with in my youth. By the time Collective Soul came along, I was desperate for someone like Collective Soul to come along. Hugely underrated band.
Wow...first Tommy James, then Randy Bachman and now Ed Roland....you seem to be tapping all my favorite frontman over the years. It was a pleasant surprise to find your interview with Ed! I've seen Collective Soul twice, including once just last year and they still got it. Much of their songs have gotten me through some rough times and enhanced some great times. Ed has to be one of the underrated frontmen in rock. Great interview as always!

Such a great song - I always loved the sense of awe in it. I could see it having a huge “Running Up That Hill”-style comeback if it got exposed to younger audiences via a popular TV show or movie.
Always loved that song. I was in high school in the 90's and still love this music but I also listen to the new music that is coming out. But some days I just want to listen to older music.
Hints allegations and things left unsaid…I’ve worn out copies. At one point, recovering from a broken ankle, I used the beat of the songs to walk and regain my strength. I used this album to wake up my grandmother in the mornings when I took care of her. Love you guys…and I really do hope that Ed sees this. You guys mean a lot to me. Thank you for that!
One of the last pre-pandemic concerts I saw was CS on a double bill with the Gin Blossoms. Both were excellent, complemented each other perfectly, and shared the stage for several numbers. Great experience all around from two underrated bands from the 90s.

Yes! I was in middle school when Shine and Hints, Allegations, and Things Left Unsaid came out. Shine was a huge song then and my dad and I both loved them! That's so cool also that Dolly Parton covered it! Gotta love the genre-crossing covers like that!

When songs like "Shine" and "December" came out, my annoying neighbors (at the time) would blast them, so that everyone in the building had to listen to their music. Now that decades have passed and I'm living in a new place, I've come to appreciate those songs.
I remember the first time I heard "Shine" on the radio. It was such a different sound than anything else at the time. Kind of like a second wave of "Smells Like Teen Spirit". It was (and still is) in a category of its own.
Being from Seattle area , the reason theres so much 70's influence in the 90's era bands is it was common for people here to listen their parents favorite music instead of making a point NOT to like it as is common in most areas .
As soon as the grunge era started I kind of tuned out to much of the 90s music and stayed entrenched in the 50s-80s. I remained pretty steadfast in my ways (with a few exceptions) until I started listening to your show and others like Rick Beato. Now I'm opening myself up to some gems that I skipped past in the 90s onward.
Ed Roland is one of the coolest laid back artists ever. To think that the riff came from his younger brother and the Yeah came from a toilet paper roll and a megaphone, facts are stranger that fiction. Stardom from a great band could not happen to a better guy than Ed. I still jam collective soul all the time. Great episode professor, I want to hang out with Ed!

Thank you so much for this episode!! This song came out when I was twenty-one, and I can still remember the first time I heard it. I was driving down the interstate and it came on the radio. I was so blown away by it that I pulled off at the next town I came to and found a record store in the mall where I bought the cassette. I never really listened to much "modern" music, mostly being stuck in the 60s and 70s, but I loved, and still love, Collective Soul's music.

I'm 47, my first record was Def Leppard Pyromania when I was 5 😁. Collective Soul is one of those groups that needs no “Greatest Hits” album. Every album is a non stop, edge to edge greatest hits. They don’t have a dud in their catalogue. “7 Year Itch” is just a slice of a bunch of their songs. I have a few bands that I’ll buy their albums as soon as they come out without even listening to a single clip first. Collective Soul is one of those bands for me. I’ve purchased and usually pre-ordered every one of their albums. I’ve never been sorry. Great interview.
I love this band. Seen them live 10 times. Met all the current members. They are amazing live and Ed is a great frontman. Still putting out new music that never disappoints. Even when they're performing songs from their heyday, they still manage to make it fresh.

Collective Soul has a unique sound I really like. In the 90s I was mostly listening to Sting, Sarah Mclaughlin, REM, and I liked Dave Mathews. However, every single Collective Soul released I liked because I pay attention to lyrics, and enjoyed the melodies. Love what he said about Elton John. I have admired his piano skills since I was a kid and remember well what Elton did for Ryan White.

They have a lot of great songs that you just cannot help but sing along to. And it touched my heart when Ed was talking about the huge influence that Elton John had on him. What an absolute legend.

Collective Soul is one of the best modern rock bands, period. Every album is amazing. Sure some are better than others but they're still amazing albums. Much like Rush, never a bad song never a bad album.
“Shine” is a great song, not gonna lie, but it’s still vastly overplayed even today. It’s a shame that their other stuff doesn’t get nearly as much play as that one song, because they have a fantastic catalog! Collective Soul was one of the bands that got me through my tumultuous childhood. I remember laying on my living room floor with their first 4/5 albums in the stereo CD changer, and just listening to them back to back as my body was enveloped by the music. BTW, all of Disciplined Breakdown is a terribly underrated part of their catalogue. There’s some absolutely beautiful and moving pieces in there that seem to always bring a tear to my eye. BTW #2, dude, I am extremely jealous of your job! It is literally a dream of mine to have the sort of interactions that you have with your musical heroes. I once hoped to become a musician myself, but not having the talent for it for one reason or another, I set my sights elsewhere. First to journalism, but not having the patience to be told what to write about, I settled on the culinary world to scratch that creative itch. Music is still my first love in life though, I can’t cook well without it!
I had chance to see Collective Soul at a outdoor show in Fairbanks,Alaska. What a magical night .for early fall in Alaska it was warm dragonflies flying over the audience keeping the mosquitoes at bay a full moon . It also was my sister's birthday (She passed away 3 years before) The Music and show was great.One of the best concerts I have ever seen. Thanks for the memories .... The show was 8/8/2008 in Fairbanks.
Sir Elton John is ONE of the greatest songwriters in history? I don't think so - he's UNDOUBTEDLY the greatest of them all! Only Billy and Paul come even close.
I’m sorry to hear of the recent passing of your father. You speak of him frequently so I know you were close. You were brought up on the music that I enjoyed when I was young and still enjoy. I know your father had a lot to do with your love of music. I share a similar musical connection with my dad. He was part of the WWII generation so I was brought up on an earlier generation of music. When I was a kid, my father was playing big band jazz, swing and a dash of bee bop around the house. Every once in a while he’d break out his licorice stick (clarinet) and play some of the music he grew up on in the 1940s. Those are fond memories.
Growing up ( like your dad ) music was a major part of my life ,little did I know how important it would be ,as you know music is a memory trigger and can flash a picture in your head , ask anyone who served during the Vietnam era . We enjoy your stories and bringing the facts to life , keep up the good work !….

Wow, great timing on a really great interview! My husband and I have been talking about Collective Soul a lot lately, playing it for our teenagers. Turns out that we both loved CS while growing up. Now that we are older and Christian converts, I recognize and wondered about the prayers and spiritual bent of many CS songs. Thanks for providing answers to so many of my questions! I will enjoy the music even more now, and I will also have yet another great example to show my budding musicians here at home of how you can make authentic rock and roll that has both awesome sound and substance. (Now I'm off to look up that Dolly Parton cover. I had no idea! 😃)
It was so refreshing to hear somebody talk about Elton John and Bernie Taupen as being musical heroes because there are very few pairings as good as that one. You probably count them on one hand
Loved hearing him say he wasn't ashamed to have grown up in FM radio!! You betcha! Me too and in the 90s I'd gone to college, 2 hrs from home. I was married, had 4 kids and was taking 20-25 units a quarter (10 weeks) in order to get back to my kids as fast as I could! Shine helped me through some long drives, no sleep nights and exams I was sure I'd failed!! I graduated, finished a master's the next school year and started to work at our local community college in 01-95! Now retired with 30 years (gained extra time to retirement working summers my math's not that bad!!! Haha).
Never followed Collective Soul but liked some of their songs. Thanks Adam for giving me a whole new perspective of them and their meaning. You never cease to bring such great information from my past.

I am a big fan of Collective Soul. But, sadly, they have made several bad songs - You speak my language, being one of them.
Everything you need to know about Ed Roland is when you mentioned your father passing and he stuck his hand out, what a guy. Humble and a bloody good bloke.
I met the band years ago. We were doing a special setup at Six Flags and they played a show. Not a lot of folks there but they played incredibly well anyway. We had special access backstage and they all came over and were so generous with their time. Great conversations and just a bunch of great people. Truly a nice memory.
When he reached across to take your hand and make human contact with you when you said your dad had passed, that was just… ❤️

I have my own "Shine" story, but it doesn't come close to that one split-second moment.
Yeah, Ed is always like that. I've seen several interviews where the interviewer brings up something in their livfe and Ed pivots to that rather than continue to take the spotlight.
He's a preacher or reverend or something along the lines, or atleast he was. Think he still might be.

I’m 74 years old and my children got me into Collective Soul way back when Shine was first released. Over the next 15 years or so I saw them in concert 10 times in three different states. Obviously, I was a huge fan. My daughter was married in 2011 and my wife and I treated them to a Vegas vacation including tickets to see Collective Soul. My wife and I also went. The afternoon before the evening concert at the Hard Rock, I was wandering around the casino when I spotted none other than Ed Roland playing a machine. I debated confronting him, but just wanted to thank him for his music. When I approached. I said “Hi, Ed”. He turned to face me and just put a hand to keep his distance and shook his head. He blew me off. All the concerts, money, time out of the window with one simple gesture. I bring this up after watching your recent interview with him and calling him one of the truly nice people. All I can say is not always. A celebrity doesn’t have to do much too please a fan.
Collective Soul has almost a cult following, he should be very grateful to fans like me. He could have just smiled and said hi, but he blew me off. I’m glad you have a good relationship with him. He won’t be getting any more of my money.

I never thought of them as a Christian band, and he says he believes in the separation of church and rock, but his Southern Baptist upbringing really seeps into his music. So much of it is positive and uplifting. "The World I Know" is a great song, and the video is the most uplifting video I've ever seen.

8:30 "You wrote a prayer.". A lot of RocknRoll is exactly that, intentional or not. It's one of the reasons it resonates. It's ironic that it was labeled as the Devils music when it has helped so many, including myself, on their way back up from the depths.

Thank you for your in depth conversations with artists and bands that were never on my play list. It’s never too late to listen to and gain appreciation for a song or performers. In my 73 years I’ve heard a lot, but much of it just becomes background noise as life churns on.
When my students ask me what type of music I listen to, I tell them mood music. Thats whatever I'm in the mood for at the time. I also tell them that I don't have a favorite song, there are just to many great sings to choose from.

Thank you for the talk with Ed. I have seen Collective Soul a little over 20 times. If fact one summer my wife and 4 daughters traveled to Vegas, Phoenix, LA, and a couple other cities to see them. Got to the point that the guys recognized us and gave the girls picks and drum sticks and other stuff. We had the pleasure of hanging with them a few times and I have to agree with you, not just Ed, but all the guys, are some of the most genuinely nice guys you will ever meet. Several stories I could tell you, but they are just our personal stories and of no interest to anyone else. Can't wait to see them again soon!!
I'm from Central Florida, and our local rock station was one of the first to put Shine in heavy rotation (Ed even said as much when I saw CS in Orlando a few years ago) so by the end of the 90s I was burnt out on Shine and was much more into their newer stuff at the time. Now with the benefit of time I can go back and really appreciate what they did throughout the decade. Collective Soul in my opinion is one of those rare bands who never declined in quality. The only reason they stopped having hits was the industry shifted its focus from real rock and roll to something that appeals to the lowest common denominator. And they STILL rock so hard live. 🤘🤘

The music from that era is even more appreciated today given the load of crap that radio stations play nowadays. There isn’t much variety, and you hear the same song several times in an hour.
Matt, you’re so right. So many songs back then used to have me screaming “stop” at the radio, including this one. But now they fill me with the warm inner glow of nostalgia and the knowledge that these were actually great songs.
Grew up 60s and 70s here and I love Collective Soul. They could rock it and with meaningful songs! He is still a solid guy. Stellar Records that definitely earn classic rock status!

Collective Soul is one of my absolute favorites. Every album, I would play over and over. Never got sick of it. Such a crucial part of my childhood in the 90's
I'm a GenX'er and they are huge in my book, too. Right now, their catalog is my "desert island" material. At other points in my life it was The Beatles or Billy Joel, but they have taken over in the last 20 years or so.

Love this song and album! My wife and I had the privilege of seeing Dolly perform this live a few years back. Gave me chills! Such a wonderfully powerful song! I'm a Baptist minister that still loves rock 'n' roll, and I still play it live with others or as a solo act. Great music is great music.

Wow Adam, first wanted to say how sorry I am to hear about your father. It has been 12 1/2 years since my father passed, and I think about him every day. He was a huge fan of Bob Seger, Linda Ronstadt, Toto, Genesis, Phil Collins, and so many more great musicians. I remember when he passed away, I had made a CD of his favorites and we played it at his wake. And I made sure that I put the CD in with him when I say goodbye. I have to stop for a minute to go wipe my face before I could finish writing this.
I have to admit, I was not a big fan of Collective Soul initially. It wasn’t until I heard the second album. The song “Simple” is my favorite song by them.
I love how the beginning of it is very misleading, and then the song just kicks in! And the recording is phenomenal.!! For some reason I thought you were older. I didn’t realize that you graduated high school and 94. You’re a baby. Lol! It’s amazing the amount of music knowledge you have, almost as much as me. Lol.! I graduated high school in 88. My friends call me the mayor. They’re always like the girl knows more about music and history of our neighborhood than anybody else. Lol.! One of my besties, Dana, she’s my vice mayor. Between the two of us, there’s nothing that we don’t remember about growing up in Boca Raton, Florida. All of her friends, all of our history, and all of the music that we grew up on. BTW…. Casey Kasem is my hero too!

This song hit me immediately, it spoke to me as well as it just rocked. I followed Collective Soul for the next ten years buying their CDs as they came out. They were one of the bands I actually bought a physical copy of any band. Now everything is available from streaming.

The 1st time I heard Shine was when it first started playing on the radio. I was driving and was absolutely elated to hear such deep, beautiful bass and real rock sound I, as a teen of the early 80s, had been craving and missing so badly. I nearly had to pull over so I could give it my full attention. Shine has such a deep, moving sound. I became a huge fan of Collective Soul and now have many favorites from them, but Shine will always be special (yeah).

I grew up in the '60's and early '70's and watched Disco, Punk, and Grunge replace the kind of music I fell in love with in my youth.
By the time Collective Soul came along, I was desperate for someone like Collective Soul to come along.

I've seen Collective Soul twice, including once just last year and they still got it. Much of their songs have gotten me through some rough times and enhanced some great times. Ed has to be one of the underrated frontmen in rock. Great interview as always!

Such a great song - I always loved the sense of awe in it. I could see it having a huge “Running Up That Hill”-style comeback if it got exposed to younger audiences via a popular TV show or movie.
Maybe Stranger Things or Cobra Kai can use it someday.

Always loved that song. I was in high school in the 90's and still love this music but I also listen to the new music that is coming out. But some days I just want to listen to older music.

Hints allegations and things left unsaid…I’ve worn out copies. At one point, recovering from a broken ankle, I used the beat of the songs to walk and regain my strength. I used this album to wake up my grandmother in the mornings when I took care of her. Love you guys…and I really do hope that Ed sees this. You guys mean a lot to me. Thank you for that!

One of the last pre-pandemic concerts I saw was CS on a double bill with the Gin Blossoms. Both were excellent, complemented each other perfectly, and shared the stage for several numbers. Great experience all around from two underrated bands from the 90s.

When songs like "Shine" and "December" came out, my annoying neighbors (at the time) would blast them, so that everyone in the building had to listen to their music. Now that decades have passed and I'm living in a new place, I've come to appreciate those songs.

Collective Soul has written some of the greatest rock melodies/songs ever. Ed Roland is on my Mt Rushmore of favorite rock vocalists!
I remember the first time I heard "Shine" on the radio. It was such a different sound than anything else at the time. Kind of like a second wave of "Smells Like Teen Spirit". It was (and still is) in a category of its own.
Being from Seattle area , the reason theres so much 70's influence in the 90's era bands is it was common for people here to listen their parents favorite music instead of making a point NOT to like it as is common in most areas .
Underrated band, excellent band. One of the last bands where you could put on the album and listen to the whole thing and it was all good. 👊🏾✊🏽
As soon as the grunge era started I kind of tuned out to much of the 90s music and stayed entrenched in the 50s-80s. I remained pretty steadfast in my ways (with a few exceptions) until I started listening to your show and others like Rick Beato. Now I'm opening myself up to some gems that I skipped past in the 90s onward.
Ed Roland is one of the coolest laid back artists ever. To think that the riff came from his younger brother and the Yeah came from a toilet paper roll and a megaphone, facts are stranger that fiction. Stardom from a great band could not happen to a better guy than Ed. I still jam collective soul all the time. Great episode professor, I want to hang out with Ed!

Thank you so much for this episode!! This song came out when I was twenty-one, and I can still remember the first time I heard it. I was driving down the interstate and it came on the radio. I was so blown away by it that I pulled off at the next town I came to and found a record store in the mall where I bought the cassette. I never really listened to much "modern" music, mostly being stuck in the 60s and 70s, but I loved, and still love, Collective Soul's music.

I tell people this a lot: Hints Allegations and Things Left Unsaid is one of the most underrated albums of all time and easily one of my top 10 ever. I'm 47, my first record was Def Leppard Pyromania when I was 5 😁. This album is in a very small club of albums since my childhood that I can listen to every song on order and remember every lyric and never get tired of

Collective Soul is one of those groups that needs no “Greatest Hits” album. Every album is a non stop, edge to edge greatest hits. They don’t have a dud in their catalogue. “7 Year Itch” is just a slice of a bunch of their songs. I have a few bands that I’ll buy their albums as soon as they come out without even listening to a single clip first. Collective Soul is one of those bands for me. I’ve purchased and usually pre-ordered every one of their albums. I’ve never been sorry. Great interview.
I love this band. Seen them live 10 times. Met all the current members. They are amazing live and Ed is a great frontman. Still putting out new music that never disappoints. Even when they're performing songs from their heyday, they still manage to make it fresh.

Collective Soul has a unique sound I really like. In the 90s I was mostly listening to Sting, Sarah Mclaughlin, REM, and I liked Dave Mathews. However, every single Collective Soul released I liked because I pay attention to lyrics, and enjoyed the melodies. Love what he said about Elton John. I have admired his piano skills since I was a kid and remember well what Elton did for Ryan White.
Alway cool to hear artists give props to their heroes.

Collective Soul is one of the best modern rock bands, period. Every album is amazing. Sure some are better than others but they're still amazing albums. Much like Rush, never a bad song never a bad album.

“Shine” is a great song, not gonna lie, but it’s still vastly overplayed even today. It’s a shame that their other stuff doesn’t get nearly as much play as that one song, because they have a fantastic catalog! Collective Soul was one of the bands that got me through my tumultuous childhood. I remember laying on my living room floor with their first 4/5 albums in the stereo CD changer, and just listening to them back to back as my body was enveloped by the music. BTW, all of Disciplined Breakdown is a terribly underrated part of their catalogue. There’s some absolutely beautiful and moving pieces in there that seem to always bring a tear to my eye.
BTW #2, dude, I am extremely jealous of your job! It is literally a dream of mine to have the sort of interactions that you have with your musical heroes. I once hoped to become a musician myself, but not having the talent for it for one reason or another, I set my sights elsewhere. First to journalism, but not having the patience to be told what to write about, I settled on the culinary world to scratch that creative itch. Music is still my first love in life though, I can’t cook well without it!

Disciplined Breakdown is probably my favorite album of theirs. Sometimes I get huge compliments for that opinion, other times I get roasted for it. 🙄

What a magical night .for early fall in Alaska it was warm dragonflies flying over the audience keeping the mosquitoes at bay a full moon . It also was my sister's birthday (She passed away 3 years before) The Music and show was great.One of the best concerts I have ever seen. Thanks for the memories .... The show was 8/8/2008 in Fairbanks.

You were brought up on the music that I enjoyed when I was young and still enjoy. I know your father had a lot to do with your love of music.
I share a similar musical connection with my dad. He was part of the WWII generation so I was brought up on an earlier generation of music. When I was a kid, my father was playing big band jazz, swing and a dash of bee bop around the house. Every once in a while he’d break out his licorice stick (clarinet) and play some of the music he grew up on in the 1940s. Those are fond memories.

Growing up ( like your dad ) music was a major part of my life ,little did I know how important it would be ,as you know music is a memory trigger and can flash a picture in your head , ask anyone who served during the Vietnam era . Wow, great timing on a really great interview! My husband and I have been talking about Collective Soul a lot lately, playing it for our teenagers. Turns out that we both loved CS while growing up. Now that we are older and Christian converts, I recognize and wondered about the prayers and spiritual bent of many CS songs. Thanks for providing answers to so many of my questions! I will enjoy the music even more now, and I will also have yet another great example to show my budding musicians here at home of how you can make authentic rock and roll that has both awesome sound and substance.

It was so refreshing to hear somebody talk about Elton John and Bernie Taupen as being musical heroes because there are very few pairings as good as that one. You probably count them on one hand
Loved hearing him say he wasn't ashamed to have grown up in FM radio!! You betcha! Me too and in the 90s I'd gone to college, 2 hrs from home. I was married, had 4 kids and was taking 20-25 units a quarter (10 weeks) in order to get back to my kids as fast as I could! Shine helped me through some long drives, no sleep nights and exams I was sure I'd failed!! I graduated, finished a master's the next school year and started to work at our local community college in 01-95! Now retired with 30 years (gained extra time to retirement working summers my math's not that bad!!! Haha).
Never followed Collective Soul but liked some of their songs. Thanks Adam for giving me a whole new perspective of them and their meaning. You never cease to bring such great information from my past.
