So many of these are heartbreaking. That drugged up woman who tossed her own child out of the car, it amazes me how many officers have self restraint enough not to reach for their handguns at scenes like these.
I had a friend tell me that he went to the scene and arrested this guy who raped and drowned his 1 year old. That dude accidentally fell a few times on his way to the cruiser.
Yeah, and the one where the dude came in to find he had to pick up pieces of his wife’s skull whispering “it’s gonna be alright”
Late reply but "we thought it was a bogus call" pissed me off. Every time I hear about a dispatcher not doing their job it makes me furious.
EVERY FIRST RESPONDER I've ever met would rather show up to something that turned out to be nothing than something that horrible. "Bogus call"? Great. Give those guys a sigh of relief that the car accident is just a fender bender and not teens wrapped around a tree with their innards yards from them.

I was told of a story of a cop who lost is after putting her newborn in a blend and shot her like 9 or 10 times in her back
As a paramedic, my dad has been fine seeing humans practically skinned alive and still writhing around. Blow their faces off and still be okay enough to try to take with only part of their left lower and upper mandibles remaining. (Failed suicide.)
My dad can handle almost anything like that. What he cannot handle? Dead kids. Nothing of the sort. Any time he had a call where a child died when I was 1 - 4 he would come home and just go like " Hey, why dont you come play with your army men in the living room? There's a lot more room. Wanna go to the dollar store and buy another pack so you can have a bigger fight? " and now as an adult I realize... he was just taking time to appreciate how fortunate he was that it wasn't his kid, but somebody just lost the light of their life. Something that they came together with another human to make. A life snuffed out in an instant because a parent didn't say " Hey, buckle up. " ( This was back when idiots were less prudent about buckling up. People are much better today. Idiots that still don't? Oh, right. Most of you are dead because you're also the type to become drunk drivers or drug addicts because " Pfffffts. It's fiiiine. Would never happen to me. "
That last one... that poor bastard died in probably the most agony a person possibly can experience. If there's an infection in your teeth, you're gonna know it. And it will kill you quick if you don't fix it. If there's any medical issue worth going into debt for, it's fixing an abscessed tooth.
I was 800 miles from home on a college internship. 2nd week , my one molar got infected and died. Monday my tooth hurt but I thought it was my wisdom teeth trying to come through. Next day I felt like crap. Played telephone tag with mom. Who was playing telephone tag with a friend of the family 's sister that lived nearby. Next day I got an emergency rootcanal.
Maxed out my debit and credit (low limit). Credit rating took a hit. But I would rather give birth without meds than have that level of pain again.
(Plus I couldn't eat anything that required any teeth, this included bananas)

My cousin was friends with a guy who had a failed suicide with a shotgun and he said even after all the reconstructive surgeries it still looked like you wanted to just vomit when you saw him. As a final middle finger to the world he successfully killed himself after all the surgeries were finished

An old woman lived near my father in the 1970s. Everyone knew she was wealthy. She was very eccentric, wearing worn out furs and costly out of style clothing bought decades earlier. Well, two junkies thought it’d be an easy score. So they break into her home one night and murder her. They were caught, but police learned they only got away with a few handfuls of jewelry... none of this purported wealth everyone talked about.
During the investigation, police were searching her home high and low for evidence. They were conflicted whether the junkies were lying or the old stories everyone told each other were no more than rumors. It wasn’t until someone went to throw something out police found the garbage can was filled to the brim with cash. In short order, investigators realized every room has a shiny metal trash can you’d expect to see Oscar The Grouch living in. They opened the lids and every one was filled to the top with cash.
Millions of dollars, all in garbage cans.

Well I guess it worked, no one thought to look there when robbing her. Shame she hadn't also had a weapon in easy reach so she could have blown those scumbags away. I want money like most people, but my dreams all center around winning a lottery ticket- there's nothing I want desperately enough and no one I hate so much that I'd try to rob them. Besides, a junkie (I didn't know it at the time, she wasn't high then) who I helped out by giving her some of the only money I had at the time so she could get food and a ride somewhere safe to sleep with her bf somehow thought my purse was a bag of money and had talked about coming back later to rob me. Luckily her bf was a good guy despite being an addict and in love with her, and warned me about it. I still hope he somehow got his life together and got off the streets, he didn't deserve that life.

One of my mom’s old friends was on the SWAT team responding to Columbine. He quit soon after. I don’t know too much about it, but she said she saw it on the news, then looked closer and was like “Oh my gosh, that’s (friend’s name)!”
Hats off to those who can dedicate a career to law enforcement, corrections, military, EMT etc. without losing their sanity or moral compass. No way in hell I could tolerate exposure to such gruesome human misery and filth for a middling income.
Let me accept that compliment on behalf all of us in these fields.

Heard a story from a cop that she responded to a house fire, in which a man died. After an x-ray a bullet was found in the head. So while they removed the bullet, they saw what it really was, a bloody vape. It was most likely that the man had slept with a vape on his nightstand. Than it exploded shooting into him and burning his house. She said it was the worst thing she had experienced.
The saddest part is the story about the toddler wasn't the first story where a person died because a 911 operator thought the call sounded fake. Thank God for every 911 operator, paramedic, police officer, doctor and first responder that doesn't take that chance and save the lives of people who would otherwise not be here today.
I can't imagine someone thinking "waste of time"
Worst case scenario cops show up expecting something awful and probably feel relief when they go one call without seeing something unbelievably gruesome.

While I was still living at my parents, one Sunday morning our 80y/o neighbor came almost crawling to our door asking for helping waking up his son that was "sleeping" since Saturday afternoon. The guy was already gray, my mother and I entered in a state of doing whats need to be done, she called the family that's lives out of country and I call the emergency services. The police commended us for the ability to stay cool during all that. We just freaked out when all was over.
That's so heartbreaking

Dont know if it really happened or not but one of my highschool teachers talked about a woman in his town who had shot and killed a cop over a muffin. He started talking about it because someone was arguing with him that humans are the most compassionate, sensitive and intelligent beings in the universe or some stupid shit.
I don't know whether to laugh or cry.
My husband’s worst call was a fire that killed 3 children, ages 3, 2, and 11 months.

I’m not a cop but I think this still fits. I’ve been living in homeless shelters for the last 2 years or so and I’ve seen some shit. Worst was this guy who got a bed just over Christmas. He had all his front teeth knocked out and he was clearly on something. A couple days after he arrived I woke up one evening to hear screaming outside my room. This guy had flipped out on his roommate and beat the shit out of him. He smashed the guy’s head against the metal bed frame so badly that he killed him. Cops were called and I wasn’t allowed to leave my room for almost a day. There was a fuck ton of blood everywhere it was ridiculous. Never saw the guy again but I’m sure he’s facing big time
There was an awful story similar to this I read in the paper once. A woman working in a homeless hostel got attacked by a guy and he hit her repeatedly with a fire extinguisher. Not sure why he did it, he was probably on something but it was supposedly a random attack. That poor lady, everyone said she was a kind person and she was killed for no reason.
I was a CO for 20 years. You don't lock down the whole compound before you break up a fight. You might wait for more staff but it just depends on the situation. Chow hall is one of the most common places for fights to break out.
I’m 19, becoming a CO till i’m 21 and go to the police academy. I’m ecstatic to do the job, but slowly prepping myself to witness human’s worst forms.

If you're going to be cool, be cool every day. The inmates will respect you as long as you're not wishy washy. It's not as bad as you're expecting. Just keep your head on a swivel and don't think the uniform makes you seven feet tall and bulletproof. Good luck to you.
My uncle was a cop, he has seen everything, murders, rapes, gang violence and overdoses. But the worst thing he said he saw was a 750lb woman that died on her recliner. She had no one but her two cats, the cats proceeded to eat her face, hair and ears. The cats also had filled their litter box and they started going everywhere. Including on the woman, then the coroner had to get at least 5 cops including my uncle to pick her up and put her on the gurney. He said it smelt like old propane and cheetos.

Biggest thing I heard from comments is usually the sense of power over them. Adult women can reject you or accuse you for SA and you get in trouble. Children though are easier targets and they know they can't defend themselves as easily as adults.
My uncles brother was a cop, and he was responding to a call about illegal drug use. The caller described hearing "Cocaine" repeatedly from their neighbor. When he knocked on the door, a woman answered, and said "can I help you?" He came in, and asked to see any illegal drugs. The man started giggling, and said "can I go get something?" He goes around the corner and returns with an all white cat. He puts the cat down facing away from him, and says "cocaine" and the cats head slowly turns to face us. He says "my cats name is cocaine. Yes I know its weird, but your welcome to search for cocaine that isnt my cat. They had a laugh, and he left.
My dad's worst call was a young guy with his girlfriend on a motorcycle. He lost control and was beheaded, the girlfriend was on the motorcycle with his body for a short distance. She was hurt as well but alive.

my dad is a CO for the michigan department of corrections. IDK if he saw this or not, but one night, a prisoner had eviserated himself. The prisoner's bunkie had gotten up to take a piss, then stepped on something squishy. Confused, he turned on the light, and saw prisoner 1's intestine on the floor. Prisoner 2 starts screaming at the sight, waking Prisoner 1 who says: Can you please be quiet? I'm trying to sleep.

16:41 This was the 4th November 2011, M5 pile-up I believe. For anyone who doesn't know, we commemorate the fact a plot to blow up parliament with gunpowder failed, it was in the 1600s. Bonfire Night is the 5th of November, but it's usual for professional displays to occur anytime around the end of October to the 7th/8th November, especially on the weekend closest to the date.
4/11/2011 there was a weather phenomenon I've only experienced in the UK where there is a heavy, cold atmosphere that's fog, without being white and visible like normal fog. A lot of communities will hire a professional team by raising money from events earlier in the year with the rest kept and carried over. One community did this near Taunton in the South West of England, and chose a site that was on pasture land near the M5 motorway. The smoke got trapped in this kind of heavy atmosphere turning it into just a wall of white. People were driving thinking it was normal fog, which you can see through if you slow down and turn high beam lights on. Smoke is different from fog so it quickly becomes dense and without wind won't just blow over.
34 cars were involved, one smashing into another because the cars couldn't see one another. I can't remember exactly how many died but there were at least 50 people who were injured. The crappy thing is that there were no laws against holding displays so close to the motorway then. The professional team was legit, had a good reputation and didn't use cheap imported fireworks. It was a perfect storm, and the pros said themselves the issue was the law. Had one been on the statute they would have followed it.

I was in bording school and a new girl came in but by the second week she'd had a family emergency and it turned out that her mom had lost the plot completely and blown her head off w a shotgun in front of her 2 younger kids. It was REALLY fukt up!! The kids were like 6 and 8... I felt just fukin terrible for her.
Not a police officer but a former EMT. Responded to a car crash between a Caddilac an a concrete mixer. The Caddilac was full of drunk teenagers who had stolen the car for a joyride. They had crossed the center line and hit the cement mixer head on. The impact caused the truck to ride up and over the car breaking the axles from the truck and decapitation all 5 teenagers in the car. I had to remove the bodies from the wreck and the medical examiner had to figure out which head belonged to which body.
The second one was where I was dispatched to a crash and found my wife dead and had my month old baby girl die in my arms in the 40 feet it took to run from the wreck to the ambulance. This was my last night as a paramedic. The drunk driver that killed my family got 35 years to life in prison for 2 counts of murder because he had a blood alcohol level of .42 and also had cocaine in his system. He was driving a stolen vehicle and running from the police when he hit them. His earliest possible release date is in 2033 but he is likely to spend much longer in prison because he keeps getting into trouble.

I have heard of this happening so, so many times! What is it about being drugged out that triggers parents/caregivers to cook small children??? I've sometimes heard that the adult mistakes the child for meat. But I have a hard time accepting that is what is happening in all of these cases. After all, if you're that stoned out of your mind, I can hardly believe that you'd have the ambition to cook a meal. Any insights?
I’m a paramedic, and I love my job, even though my body clearly doesn’t.
I do have some bad calls. The worst calls always involve kids.
My worst call? The guy crushed in a fat berg. A fat berg is basically a giant plug of flushed diapers and other things not meant to be flushed the consistency of wet cement.
It’s kind of like plague buildup in an artery to a point. In this case, the ‘artery’ is a branch of the main sewage line.
A team had gone down to break it up as it was causing problems. Can’t inconvenience the rich people for long on that branch. People were ordered not to flush toilets, but rich people don’t follow orders very well.
Something happened, likely some rich asshole who decided they were above the order, flushed.
This caused the fat berg to shift, completely consuming one of the workers up to his neck.
We rock up and it’s clear this guy is in serious trouble. There’s not much I can do other than visually monitor the guy. I can see he is slowly becoming cyanotic from not being able to breathe.
My coworkers immediately get to work. The game plan is to try to loosen up the pile so the guy can breathe.
Well, ether the same asshole or someone else flushed. This only causes the pile to swell further with water.
This time, cops go from door to door, ordering that no one flushes, and yes, even rich people have to follow orders.
Another flush. The water to that section is finally shut off. I heard later the rich bitched over the inconvenience of not having water for two hours.
Back to the situation with the fat berg. It’s shifting as attempts are made to dig the guy free, but he’s stuck fast and in desperate need of oxygen.
We see our chance to pull the guy free and take it. The guy is pulled free, sans most of his lower half. He looked at us in absolute horror while I’m frantically tying off blood vessels and doing everything I can to prevent further blood loss.
Guy made it as far as the ICU after surgery before he passed.
Current theory is he got cut into two due to the constant shifting of the pile thanks to the assholes who refused to follow orders.
Yes, the fat berg was successfully broken up and dealt with.
I have never forgotten that guys look as he realized his lower half was gone.
These are so sad, and heartbreaking! I couldn't find ever be a police officer or emt, or doctor.. II was a nurse but at old people home(?), and it was okay, but still I stopped working there because the other nurses were terrible with the patients.

It must have been awful for the neighbour knowing that their daughter probably could’ve been saved if someone had just admitted the schizophrenic patient when she started talking about killing the child.
Unfortunately this seems to happen. There was a case here in the UK where a woman entered the country from I think Hungary and she was mentally ill. She went to a park and voices told her to kill a little girl. She was a complete stranger and she used a Box cutter. I think she was deported to spend time in jail but it was such a senseless killing. She should have been admitted so much earlier.

This isn't a crime but a wreck of a tanker and a pickup truck i worked in the Russian police force long
Story short a officer checked behind the tanker were the pickup was and found a leak he went to check the driver trying to keep the truck still because it was caught on a rock keeping it from falling down a small hill it broke and fell caught fire causing the tanker to explode the officer behind the tanker was pretty much boiled alive, one got stabbed in her head by a piece of shrapnel, and the last one died of blood loss by getting impaled all over his body. I got a piece of shrapnel in my leg while giving the trucker CPR. A friend who was there later said that she was in her patrol car when a piece of the truck tire hit her windshield but it fortunately didn't break but I don't know if it's true. This is my worst because I lost a lot of work friends i lost the three and some who couldn't ever work in the police because of injuries.

It's actually quite a common trauma story in fiction, appearing in games such as both Mass Effect 3 and Metal Gear Solid 4, but this was just the most comical (how it's delivered it overdramatic) and quoted version.

I'm not a police but I use to drive a truck over the road and saw a tractor trailer and a school bus wreck (where the bus driver was letting the kids hang their heads and arms out the windows) side to side and there was decapitations and amputations. I have PTSD due to this.

Saw a video of a russian man trying to un alive himself with a shotgun in his car. All of his face was gone (blind, unable to speak...) but he was still alive! What horrified me is the part of still being alive and everything being dark after that and having to live with the horrific consequences.
My driving instructor is a retired cop and he told me a story of how this drunk guy wandered into some train tracks and died after he got hit. My instructor asked if the cleanup crew wanted him to stay to help cleanup and at first they said no but then asked him to go grab the last bit of him which happened to be the guys head, and his buddy pulled out a polaroid camera and now he has a Polaroid picture of him holding this goods head by the hair
I pray that whoever throws a child out of a car onto a highway or hurts them in any way Burns in hell for eternity and I pray they experience pain none of us can comprehend.... People absolutely suck

That was the one I regretted hearing about, the one that scarred me just hearing about it. All the rest were really gruesome, yes, but that story had an extra added dimension of depravity that I was just not prepared for.

Collecting the ejected body parts of 20 people from a severe crash would be a bad job, yeah- especially in the hot summer- but the job I think might even be worse would be trying to fit all those pieces back together. All those gurneys, and the people on them in such a state. Its enough to make me glad I didn't just grab food.

Not me but my mom(i know i know). Although compared to these stories, it might not seem like much, in the country i live(one with the lowest crime rates in the world), this is big news.
My mom used to work for a "special" area in the law enforcement in my country, to put it lightly. She always tells this one story whenever i ask her what was her worse case.
She was once passing on a village on duty because she had recieved a report where "satanic" rituals were being performed in the cemetery. Come to see, it was full on blood pentagram with decapitated chickens lying around. Seemed to be a reacurring issue, for that.
After a bit of investigating, it turned out all of this was caused by a dutch-national kid, who didnt like living in the country(he was living there because his mom and dad separated and he went to live with his mom) and wanted to return to the netherlands. So, his amazing brain thought if he caused stuff like this, he would be sent back to his dad, because his mom would think he was batshit crazy.
Somehow, supposeadly, it actually worked. He was sent back
