Here's my tip, this works well if you hike with a friend and share, buy your Mountain house in a #10 can (it's about 1/2 the price this way) and empty it in to a zip-loc bag. The food lasts a month once the can is open, this way you don't have to carry as much trash out of the woods and it takes up way less space in your pack.

When I am backpacking in the desert where I'm carrying extra water anyways, I see less need for dehydrated meals and choose meals that are moist already. Walmart sells Thai green curry rice that is awesome with some added chicken. And when I go in the winter, I know that it will keep food "refrigerated" and unspoiled, so that allows for using over a few days portions of a bag of meat or chicken cooked at home.

I purchased the #10 cans, Mountain House, and separated the contents into individual servings (2servings in each pack because 1 serving just isn't enough.)
I store the meals in ziploc mylar bags i ordered from Amazon and placed an O2 absorber in each pack.
    Cheaper than buying prepackaged meals.
I keep these packs in my work truck next to the stove and pot.

Mtn house lasagna has been my number one for over 30 years. I rarely use the mainstream backpacking meals like these, but on a section, the lasagna is usually the first night and the last night and any other celebration night like hitting a terminus etc. the lasagna was also the meal that made me switch from any metal spoon to the old fashioned teflon spoons. The cheese bits that come in the package stick to the spoon and ends up being like a kong for humans... sit in camp nibbling cheese bits off the spoon for twenty minutes. But then the residue wipes off the teflon spoons easier than the metal ones. Now I’m hungry for lasagna.

I agree, with the mountain house meals. I also really like their Chicken and Rice, and Chicken with mashed potatoes (that one I eat when I am really hungry, because it is a lot of food in there). The one thing I will say though, is if I don't forage for greens and take my vitamins, I really start to crave salads, which tells me they are not the only thing you should eat on a trip... Variety is the key!

  • @StormLaker

Texas State Fair Chili is my personal favorite from Packit Gourmet. I take along an extra bag of Frito's, and if it's the first "evening" of my trip, I will bring shredded sharp cheddar cheese and sour cream. And here in the midwest, you cannot have chili without a nice warm cinnamon roll- so I usually carefully pack one in foil and keep it in the top pocket of my pack until I get to my first camp for the evening. I warm it up over the fire briefly and have it along with my chili. The Packit "Dottie's Chicken n' Dumplings" is pretty awesome too. I've always been curious about the biscuits and gravy, I'll have to give those a try. Another brand I like is Cache Lake Foods- they make meals geared more towards BWCA trips, but I've used them backpacking before. They have a great biscuits and gravy, but you have to mix and pan fry the biscuits (like pancakes).

Like them too, but unless you plan on eating them right away, they don’t have a very long shelf life. I like the convenience of stocking up on MH or Backpackers Pantry, and pull some off the shelf when needed, and not worry about expiration. (30 years with most of theirs)

  • @paulgalli8060

Back when I hiked the PCT (2003), Annie Chun's had the best Asian food with lots of calories. They were one of my favorites. I sent some Mountain House meals to myself at Kennedy Meadows, because I figured the Southern Sierras would be the most demanding section and I would want easier meals. Otherwise, I just ate whatever packaged rice and noodle meals I found in the local stores. Ricearoni, Annie Chuns, instant potatoes, stovetop stuffing, etc. And lots of those little round cheeses when I could find them. I found that trying to fill my food bag from small towns increased the diversity of my meals. Of course, I also got stuck and hiked out of Belden with several cans (yes cans) of ravioli and spaghetti because that's all they had and I didn't want to hitch to town because I'd heard it was pretty difficult. Fun memories. Thanks for reminding me.

I like to add a bag of chicken chunks to a freeze-dried vegetarian meal. The chicken-in-foil may weigh 3 oz (SweetSue brand has 3 oz bags), but it doesn't need rehydration and has some fat with it as well which freeze-dried foods seem to be missing. I've even found shredded beef brisket in a foil bag in the local H.E.B. which is a great addition to Idahoan mashed potatoes. Mmmm-mmm!

For me that would mean digging cat holes all day lol. I love pepperoni but it doesn't love me.

What would you advise to eat on a rural trail? when you don't have stores that sell instant meals (Like I'm planning to go hiking 500km in Turkey next month)

How many other thru hikers have gagged while eating but fought on and kept eating? It happened a few times for me.

Oh yeah, my favorite was getting to add an ounce of butter into every meal.

I hear you on force feeding yourself. It's weird, for the last couple of years I'd lose my appetite in the backcountry, despite a really hard day. That was my biggest fear before starting the CDT, losing too much weight. But for some reason I had a solid appetite from day one on the CDT

Yup... Backpacker's pantry Santa Fe Rice & Beans.... Literally tasted like I was spooning moist & mushy dirt into my mouth... Everyone I was with agree'd that it tasted & smelled like dirt... Have always wanted to buy another pack of it to eat off the trail to see if it really is as absolutely disgusting as I remember, but can't bring myself to waste the money...

Bacpackers pantry Pad Thai is a favorite of mine. I love the Mountain House meals you mentioned and am looking really forward to trying the others. Sintax77 talks about Packit Gourmet Cheese Burgers being really delicious. Thanks for the videos!

Dehydrated is efficient. Even better to make/dehydrate your own

Love them biscuits and gravy. The first or second morning after town you can also make that with a packet of pork gravy and two sausage and egg biscuit sandwiches from a fast food restaurant. Also just about any brands beef stew is decent as well.

Thank you for sharing Dixie, the cheese stick addition to the Mountain House is something I never thought about. I'm curious though, how long can you keep those cheese sticks in your pack without refrigeration? I'm always worried about carrying cheese as I'm concerned it will go bad in my pack.

Hi Dixie. Really enjoying the videos. Next month my daughter and I will be getting ready for our first sectional backpacking trip on the Georgia part of the Appalachian trail. We will be starting out at Amicalola Falls and going through Springer mountain. My question is about food storage. What advice would you give on the best way to store food in this area of the trail?

Everything I've tried so far from AlpineAire has been great! Especially Pepper Beef, Chicken Gumbo, and spicy sausage pasta. Lots of flavor and good amount of spice.

Vegan hiker here! There are so many options for vegans that are just like the mountain house meals. REI sells a bunch of them and they are really good! Vegan hiking is the best bc you’re enjoying nature and preserving it too! 🌱
