      too much food to waste time with, it's so much easier to eat once every 36 - 48 hours, eat a pound of beef and some fruit within 60 min. and resume hiking, salt water in between meals

      Psychotic Veteran started March 8. Made it 10 days to Rock Gap NC before the AT emailed asking hikers to go home. March 6, 2021 start date part deux. I’ll restart at Springer.

    Well done! Made me realize all our days off trail are even more repetitive. Get up, shower, walk and feed the dogs, drive to work, work, drive home, veg out with TH-cam, sleep, get up.....
    And the scenery most never changes....

      Dave mate, break the monotony of suburban existence. Next time you feel like doing a poop just hang it in the back yard. Then follow it up the next evening and hang a poop in the local park.
      Before you know it you'll make it to the fringes of the woods to poop after work.
      That really is all camping and hiking is about anyway, the rest is just product placement.

    I love that you went back and added footage from when you were out on trail. Awesome to see the routine of a fellow backpacker and how our styles are similar, but differ in many ways.     Wow, great video. I'm ready for a nap after watching this. A guy I once talked to said thru- hiking is just like a job. You get up, go to work, (hike), then go to bed at night. Just in a different location every night.

    I'm kind of amazed by the amount of things you manage to fit in a day. I always imagine I'd be so beat by the end of the day, I'd just pass out after eating some instant noodles.

    Wow! It is a busy day.
    I found your suggestion about cooking dinner before you get to a campsite very smart. I, personally like to start early before sunrise and then set up camp before dark. So you are right each hiker has their own preferences. I always like cowboy camping because I'm lazy and it easier for an early start. But each to their own.
    Loved this video on your daily routine.

    Last summer I did a month thru-hike of the pyreneees, after getting back to 'ordinary life' you almost forget what it was like. This video reminded me a great deal of how it felt, and reminds me of how much I miss it! Your rythm is indeed very comparable to what mine was, although I never hiked in the dark and luckily have no bear issues in that area. Good to see some points on which could improve my routine too. Great video :)

    Thank you for answering the Number Two question that's been loitering in my mind. For my 70th in 2020 me and a mate will be walking the 600 mile Bibbulumun in Western Australia. Will not be walking at night though as the snakes tend to set up camp on the track. They're hard enough to get around in the daylight. Thank you for a great video. Loved your accent.

    Nice work! I have done thousands of miles of hiking myself and what you put in this video mirrors a lot of what I've done. The one thing I've noticed at least for me, is it's more fun to do it with someone else. You look like you could be really fun to hike with! Especially since you're so capable. Anyway happy hiking!

    It's the coffee (not the caffeine) first thing in the morning that makes you need to poop. It has a mild laxative effect on 30 to 40 percent of the population. And it works pretty quick, and there can be no lollygagging when it kicks in. LOL.

      @@kfstreich4787 Yeah, who can say for sure? And there could be something in the decaf process that changes whatever it is about the makeup of coffee that causes the effect. I would think a thru-hiker would find it advantageous to take care of business before starting out for the day. :-)

      Actually it's the caffeine. The caffeine is a stimulant and that includes stimulating your colon. Some people aren't affected as much by it as others. It doesn't affect when I need to "go" but it does give me gas (I know, TMI, right?!).

      It’s the caffeine in it. Tea will do the same thing. It’s the stimulant nature of whatever you happen to take in the morning that helps with the morning calls rather than the actual coffee.

    Love this video :) I did half of the Arizona Trail last spring and then got an awesome outdoor job in Alaska, so I took an... extended break from the trail to pursue that. I'm finishing the other half of it this spring. Last year at this time I was binge-watching your videos to get ready for the trail. Thank you so much for putting these out, it really helped me prepare. I think it also helped my family not be so nervous about me being a solo female out there. I am also a late to rise, late to bed kind of hiker, so, thank you for the validation! I also use an InReach to give daily updates to my family. Right now I'm still in Alaska, getting in shape and meal prepping for the other 400 miles. 400 miles is adorable compared to the CDT, PCT, and AT... but still tough! Have you considered hiking the Arizona Trail? It's gorgeous and not crowded at all. Lots of solitude. With your experience you could probably finish it in 40 days or less. Most hikers that I encountered on the AZT had already completed the AT, Florida Trail, etc. and were testing out their ultralight set-up, or trying to push themselves to get it done in under 40 days. I was one of the only newbies out there and it really showed. Anyway, thanks again for the amazing videos. Best of luck on all your adventures :)

    Dixie you’re awesome, such an inspiration. Totally love ya, I’m originally a southerner too from bay saint Louis MS. Now a resident of Colorado. You have inspired me even with 4 heart surgeries, to get out there and hike my own hike. I’m 45 now and my dream is either the pct or cdt. God willing, gear willing I’ll get there before 50. I’m two weeks post op now, I’m praying to be out there by spring 2021 (I know my window is closing) I’m slowly collecting my gear, trying my hardest to get my big three. Anyway I love ya, followed forever and was in your opsie video, I grabbed the trail marker (that wasn’t wood) and tumbled, thanks for including me (made me smile) I just wanted to thank you for being so kind, inspirational and willing to help us newbies figure all this out, best of all you make me feel, even tho I’m older and some health issues, I can get out there!🏔🌲🚶🏻‍♀️🌳🏕🦋🌝🌘⛈❤️

      Aloha. I agree. I did Great Smoky Mtn. AT from Davenport Gap South to Fontana dam in 1973. Dixie brings back the memories in a pleasant way. Good memories. I've watched her AT video adventure. Several of her "how/what to do" posts. They all bring back stored away memories. Escapism at it primal best. Can't wait to view her PCT and CDT vids. Always wanted to hike those. But, haven't. Rats.

    simply brilliant. i'm a new hiker. though an experienced flyfisherman. I'm trying to get a little deeper into our coastal mountains (BC, Vancouver Island)to be able to flyfish headwaters and such, hiking being the necessary evil to make that happen. Your honest and entertaining style has encouraged me to push a little harder to make this new "hike into headwaters" plan come true. I'll no longer think sleeping in a bit late on the trail, or eating burrito wrapped foods and runny peanut butter is a negative. Though the runny peanut butter may prove a bit of a problems until I can get that image out of my head..
    Great job, really. Please do more vids. You are humble, sincere, funny and experienced... all things required for people who want the adventures you live, for themselves. Keep up the good work.

    From SC I've been hiking and climbing around Colo - Wyoming - Montana since 1991 (mostly elk hunting. Since 2005 I been spending 5/6 months a yr in Colo. Having said that I've learned a bunch from your talks and hiking. Thanks for being here you are a blessing.

    Two, maybe three, comments. I am now 78, I began hiking when I was 56 or so and since I retired I almost always get 200 miles or more each summer, so I do have a reasonable amount of experience. In one of the scenes you showed a Thermarest Neo Air. I bought one recently, and tried it out on a late fall hike. The minute I rolled onto it I realized that it was not going to be anywhere as warm as I was used to. In fact, all that night, the part of me that was close to the ground was some degree of cold. This has never happened before with my normal, self-inflating Thermarests. I brought it home from that trip, and promptly put it on eBay (It didn't sell :-)). Any time you have only air between you and the ground, you are not going to be as warm as you could be. I currently have a Thermarest called a 'Trail Scout' that rolls up into a pretty small package, 12 x 14 x 10 or so, and has always been deliciously warm. #2: In this video, some of your food choices made me nervous. Since you are reasonably young, your body can tolerate more, but the chemicals in much of the processed food are NOT healthy for the body to digest, and cannot help but have a negative impact on nutrition, especially in an environment where you are demanding the maximum from your body each day. Pop tarts and ruffles give me cold chills. ;-) I have watched several of your videos and I do envy you to the max. The PCT has always been something I have wanted to do since I began hiking, but the money support definitely isn't there. Nor will it ever be. Finally, as a hedge against the fact that I am definitely aging, and my capabilities are trending downhill, I went to hiking with goats. They have been a hoot and fun to hike with.     This is great. Thanks. I just gotta say, the food you eat.... I know you need a lot of calories, but .... 1. Oatmeal is a whole grain but it's a nice all day slow burn. 2. Olive oil, good stuff, ($11/ liter at Costco) there are 8000 calories of good fats in a liter of olive oil. Whatever anyone says about it, you quickly grow to love it, and it doesn't grease your 'works'. If you're burning fats instead of processed carbs, you have more energy longer.
    3. Whole eggs. I was thinking that through hiker TH-cam stars were going weeks between resupplies. You can cook eggs 'sous vide' in a ziplock baggie in your pot. I've done it, but usually I prefer to bring the little JetBoil skillet (which is vanity weight). Eggs keep for days and days. Farm eggs keep for months unrefrigerated.
    4. Veggies. (I saw the baby spinach! ) just about anything that you can eat almost all of it, and the rest can go in a cat hole (no seeds).
    5. Peanut butter. Aflotoxin. Peanuts are probably best avoided. Almond butter is much better and has 100% of why we love peanut butter, but it's safer.
    "I go myself to sleep" is a really neat older English word construction. Very cool. If Shakespeare happened to turn up at a campfire with you and some modern Londoners, he'd lean over and say, "Dixie, from whence did they come?"

      I would not want to lug around liters of olive oil. Water is enough for me to carry. Eggs are lovely and keep, but too fragile. Just my opinion.

      @@TheNoonie50 Actually, oil in general and olive oil in particular, is an efficient calorie source: 900 calories per 100 grams. Pure white sugar is only 400 calories per 100 grams. So to get the same calories in something other than oil, you would have to lug around more weight. WillN2Go1 will probably throw up, but bacon is 500 calories per 100 grams and another excellent calorie source, but it needs to be cooked.

      Olive oil is not water it's food. It is a liquid, but it's not equivalent to water (it's also a little lighter than water). The reason we like peanut butter is the same reason we like good olive oil: it's fat and it's tasty. Fats have the densest calorie value, so there's no other food you can carry that will have a calorie to weight ratio that's better.
      Say you do a 5 day resupply and you carry a quarter liter of olive oil, 8.5 fl ounces; in a plastic bottle, that's about half a pound, not insignificant for ultralight--but it's food weight.
      To be precise, it's 7920 calories/liter. So for the 8.5 fl oz: 1980 calories about 2/3rds of a day's calories (varies of course), 51 teaspoons, so 10 teaspoons/day, 396 calories-- a nice bump. And it's about the healthiest food there is.
      I understand looking at the glass bottle and thinking: no way. I shouldn't have mentioned a liter (I have no idea how many calories are in a whole cow...that wouldn't be a good way to talk about a t-bone steak). Sorry to be off on a side conversation, but until they bust down the door.... How to buy olive oil: never buy a mixed oil, like olive/grape seed--that's all garbage. Bertoli? 'lampeta' meaning it's only good for burning in a lamp, for cooking it's okay. But it won't give that yummmmm like the good stuff. The good stuff always has a date it was harvested. Sip a teaspoon. If it makes you cough, it's good olive oil. Weird huh? On your food it won't make you cough. I 'll fry an egg with the good stuff, but it's a bit of a waste. The tastiest aromatic things in the oil evaporate off as soon as you heat it up. On the trail, if you have a skillet, you're not going to carry two kinds of oil, the calories are not lost.
      Eggs. Those yellow egg carriers are excellent. I took one to the UK this past spring. First store I walked into in Beaminster, I couldn't find the eggs. They were out on the shelf, not in a cooler. I dutifully took them out of the well made carton and put them in my plastic egg thing. After a couple of resupplies, I gave the yellow thing to a kid for his pebble collection and just used the cartons. Eggs are tougher than you think. In three months of backpacking and sloppy packing, I think I cracked two and broke one, but never made a mess outside the container. I eat a lot of eggs, maybe 8 per day. I know now that the whole 'avoid the yolks' thing was total nonsense, but I don't know if 8/day is advisable, so I'm not recommending it. But everyday for a month on the trail? I wouldn't hesitate (I've been doing it for years)
      In camp, on a rainy day, under the fly, whipping up some eggs, getting them cooked and putting some olive oil or butter on them...backpacking with no compromises. In the States, that yellow egg container is probably a good idea or just hang on to a good carton until you get another good one. And you don't have to carry a full dozen. A egg dropped into your noodles is nice. (use a little vinegar if you want to make more egg drop than white blur). It's probably okay to bury the shells in a cat hole.
      In the long run whatever we eat is what we become. Most of us are sugar junkies, I'm one myself, after about 12 wonderful years of being mostly off the stuff. We're hungry all the time. When we feel a bit tired, we want to eat. This is very odd, but until you've been off the sugar-fix, there's not way to understand this. One of the reasons I like traveling and backpacking is to just get away from that, go a full day without eating and not even thinking about it. A good rule of thumb is: Do they sell it, or something like it, in the Seven-11, and it's not water? then it isn't food, it's only a snack. (In Japan you can get balanced meals out of a 7-11, not in the States, or the UK) . Okay sorry for the long side nonsense.

      Aflatoxin concern in peanuts is overblown. I’ve been Keto for a year and peanuts are a significant part of my daily food intake. They are calorie and nutrient dense.

    I don't know why, but the title gave me a different expectation of the video. Anyway, the video cuts to actual trail time were great. I love that you are more of an afternoon, evening and even night hiker. That is more of my life in general and encouraging that I don't have to get up at dawn every day to be a thru-hiker. Yes, I'm definitely considering it now because of you. Just got to get my knee rock solid.

    Awesome to learn your average wake up to hiking time is about an hour. I thru hiked the AT this year and I usually wake up around 7 and start hiking around 9-9:30. I like to take my time in the morning, lol... especially that we had a very rainy season.

      Me too! But I often got a late start because I wanted my sleeping bag and tent completely dry before packing them up. I was lucky that even with a big storm at Lake 12,250 just on the north side of Forester (on the JMT), I woke up to a bright sunny morning. I never had to pack up in the rain --- but that was in the Sierra.

    Thanks again for a wonderful video. I love all that you share and this was just as entertaining as all previous videos. One thing that always makes me think/laugh is people who question how you can do this every day... well, how do you get up and do your daily routine? I assume a lot of people have desk jobs they go to every day, a routine of dropping off kids, getting to work, picking up kids, getting home, etc. Not that there is anything wrong with this, it's my routine (I know not everyone has children, but you get my point). There are pros and cons to both daily routines, but like you said for yours, you get the views, the terrain and the new relationships. I just felt like sharing, that it seems "silly" to question it when people tend to have repetitive lives to begin with at home. And this is not meant to be insulting, rude or mean to anyone. Just a bit of possible perspective, I guess :) No matter what your daily routine looks like, I hope that you enjoy it and make the most of it!

    Nice wrap up of a usual routine. I'm sure many people wondered. I'm with you on the coffee ! I prefer to set up for the night when there's still enough light to see exactly what is around me, though. It may be nice to hike at night but I like to pick a spot before sunset that hopefully, has a sunrise view and I like to relax and watch and takes pictures of the sunset. Best time of day to me when everyone and everything is winding down. Sunrise is just a good but after you have to get hiking instead of going to sleep all relaxed and unwound.

    I loved this video, it really explains the flow of a day. I especially appreciated the idea of cooking prior to camping for the night, to prevent having food smells in camp, a mile away. Thats a really good idea!
