    The Highland Games - Scotland's summertime tradition. I stumbled upon the Loch Lomond games last year and it was pretty sweet.
    Let me know if you've been to see any of these events?

      No... but, where I live does have a Highlander Festival every year (The town was founded by a Scotsman) and the biggest event is the Highland Games there.

    Feels like the various Strongman competitions owe a lot to the highland games.

    • @NinhLyUK
      @NinhLyUK  5 ปีที่แล้ว +39

      Yes indeed. I was hoping that people would recognise that the strongman contests evolved from lots of strength games, the Scottish Highland games being one of them.

    There are a total of 10 events, but in most games they don't host the mile run, so the games are 9 events. They are,
    1. The open stone, a 16lbs stone that you can move to build up speed in the trig, basically it's shotput.
    2. The Braemar stone, that ninh showed, is a 22lbs stone that you can't move except to throw. This is a stand and put.
    3. Weight over bar, simply stand under the bar and lift. The weight differs based on weight and gender. Men it's 56lbs, lightweight men (under200lbs) 42lbs, and women 28lbs.
    4./5. The Hammer throw, this is 2 events because one is the heavy hammer 22lbs, and the other the light hammer 16lbs for men. Women heavy 16lbs, and light 12lbs. This you must stay in place as you swing the hammer around 2 or 3 times before launch, farther the better.
    6./7. Weight for Distance, again the weight changes from class and gender. Men 56lbs heavy, and 28lbs light.
    Lightweight men 42lbs heavy and 28lbs light. Women 28lbs heavy and 14lbs light. In these events you can spin in the trig to build up speed.
    8. The Sheaf Toss, in this event the goal is to get the sack, sheaf, over the bar using a pitchfork. Men use a 20lbs lightweight men 16lbs and women 12lbs.
    9. The Caber toss, most iconic of the games. The weight and size of the caber, the giant pole, changes from game to game. The point is not for distance but to turn the caber over end over end. Scoring is based off a clock with 12 being a perfect score. Anything less than 9 or more than 3 on the clock is a no turn.
    Good job on the overview Ninh. I've started competing in these games myself and I can tell you that these games are a lot tougher than they seem.

    • @NinhLyUK
      @NinhLyUK  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for the extra detail. I knew that some events are contested twice for different weights, but that made the video really long so I used 'up to' when describing the weights. And yes, these games are significantly harder than they look. Props to you for competing!

    Good video but you're missing a few things, the games are scored like a decathlon with everyone competing in all events, stone put as you describe is just braemar stone which is no less than 22lbs but there's also open stone which is no less than 16lb and is literally shotput with a rock in a trig. Cabers are scored for points based on clock position and degrees lifted if you don't turn it and there is a formula for the total points of a perfect turn based on length, weight, and taper of the caber since no two are alike. Also hammer usually has a 16lb and 22lb light and heavy event. Traditional order of events is braemar stone, open stone, heavy weight for distance, light weight for distance, heavy hammer, light hammer, caber, sheaf, and heavy weight over bar.

    I’ve always been curious about the traditions and customs around Highland games outside of the contests themselves. The contests and events usually seem to require a lot of strength and explosive power, which is something I can get behind. Would you ever do the rules of Naginata or Shorinji (Chinese) Kenpo. They’re admittedly similar to Kendo and karate, but it appears that scoring in competitions and some penalties may vary.

    Ninh a question
    Is highland games as you shown here, is it a collection of events like athletics consists of different events like 100 meters, shortput, long jump etc. Is this like that??
    Is it popular in other countries apart from Scotland.
    You are great Ninh, you know a lot of sports like this sport, Greco-Roman wrestling, floorball, Gaelic football,disc golf etc I came to know these only after I saw your videos , I would like to meet you face to face someday.

      Yes it's a collection of events that make up a specific games.
      It's popular in Canada, Australia, New Zealand and the US. Basically anywhere where there might be a Scottish influence.
      And thanks! I get around so I'm sure you'll see me at some point.

These days people build there own courses and compete with friends. Also these days you can find gyms and other competitions all over the world know so yes it is a show but it is mostly a sport. I recommend you use sasukepedia.com to get your information. If you make it it would be a great video and could get a good amount of views. Also if you you want for ultimate bucket list you can go to a famous ninja compition the best would be an win Vegas this year and the next coming sasuke tournament if you want. It would be really cool plz make this video
