One last thing: I dont have problems with movies tackling colorism, but when they tackle it, the dark skinned woman is always overweight and the light skinned woman is dainty and cute. To me, this promotes colorism more. They also show the dark skinned woman behaving masculine and the light skinned woman as fierce but desirable and feminine, which furthers the stereotypes more too.
I don’t understand why they felt the need to “dramatize” her story. MCJW & her daughter A'lelia life and rise to fame was interesting enough without all the lies. 🤷🏾♀️
I agree, But since they never claimed it all to be factual. Just inspired by Madam Walkers life. That whole colorism thing was over done and quite unnecessary since it took away from the real story. I prefer they stick to the facts rather than embellish.
I felt like the movie focused more on modern day agendas and stigmas rather than the true story and history of Madam C.J. Walker. It was a let down for me.
@@abundantsunflower1107 They taught in a sense , as to how hard it was and still is today for a black woman to be heard and not just stand in the background just so her partner can feel more of a man. That Booker T Washington scene when he scolded her in the back at his convention was just .... wow. I was hurt and disappointed.
Exactly, this is why I sometimes don't understand us, black people. We are the first to come to knock down our people in the quest for perfection. If they say "inspired by" that means everything is not factual.
So, here's the thing. The person you refer to as Annie Turnbo, a proprietor and educator is more commonly known as Annie Malone. The first Black female millionaire who earned her fortune by selling Black hair care products she invented. After establishing her career, she went on to open a cosmetology school which was also attached to a hotel and uniform manufacturer. She also founded an orphanage which was renamed for her after her death. You are correct, Madam Walker was employed by her. This in no way diminishes the accomplishments of Madam Walker but it is, as you have noted, important to be as accurate as possible.
I personally felt that Annie Malone was done WAY worse in this fictitious movie more than Madam CJ Walker. It was entertaining, but not truthful in any way.
Annie bought into the whole colorism thing her grandmother planted in her head that because she was light skinned she had the world at her finger tips and darker skinned women were beneath and they all wanted to look like her ....she underestimated the underdog and continued to play dirty
@@Churros1616 You mean Addie didn't exist right? Because ANNIE MALONE is a real person who actually existed and doesn't deserve to be portrayed like that.
I was so confused as to why they felt it necessary to make A’Lelia out to be lesbian. Did they need that buy-in in order to get the movie financed??? I kept researching on my phone while watching it because it was so ‘in your face’, and couldn’t find anything to support that claim.
Poetically Correct because they are trying to paint dark skin woman as unattractive. Either fat and old, or when they are young they are ok and lesbian. Sick of this propaganda
While I enjoyed this “inspired by” Netflix series, I’d love to see an actual documentary about Ms. Malone and Ms. Walker. They’re two great, Black successful women. It’s amazing that they were both self-made millionaires. Inspirational.
Why cant they ever tell black stories that are AT LEAST 50% accurate? Like, it's not that hard. I know these movies are made for entertainment but if you read Madam CJ's real life story, it's actually ALREADY very interesting and entertaining WITHOUT having to manipulate the story. They do this a lot. I liked Hidden Figures, for instance, but was so mad when I later learned they invented a whole white man/savior who didnt exist IRL (Kiefer Sutherland's chatacter). Theres one thing to adjust the story in some areas so it translates on screen, but you literally invented a whole man who is a main supporting character? I will never get over that. To be fair, they change other stories too like the Steve Jobs movie but they usually do that so it can be more entertaining. In black movies, there seems to be an agenda.
and to Elyse George White people have the money and before you say "black people have the money", whites have the control of the platforms and distribution of entertainment.
@Wolfpack8706 He has to get those movies on platforms. Now, Perry could end up developing his own distribution that would be very great for black producers.
Do you mean Kevin Costner? Katherine Johnson, had already told them they would have to fix that ladies room situation, which they did. Also, she sat in the same room as the other women when John Glenn did his orbit. She got no special treatment.
UNPOPULAR OPINION: I enjoyed the series! I loved how they showed that the road to success will never be easy and will require sacrifices but you can't lose sight of your goals. I also liked how even though it showed the lighter skinned woman more desirable etc it also showed how she was not being taken seriously and only being seen as just a pretty face or a prize even to her mother which did bother her although she often used it to her advantage. So it was good to see things from the other perspective. However, it made me want to research more about the characters and I ended up not liking how Annie Malone was portrayed as I became more aware of her story and how much she contributed to the black community, I wondered how her family felt. When I discovered many more unfactual things it kinda made me look at the series sideways. When people make stories "inspired by" I really wish they would stick as close to the original story as possible. If the colorism thing was not apart of Madam Cj walkers and Annie Malone's story then they shouldn't have made it an issue. But I guess "inspired by and based on" are two different things so we cant be too upset about it? 🤷♀️
the truth is our black heroes are being disrespected nothing in this series should be justified or even supported. as long as we keep on supporting this bullshit its not going to stop.
This is only comment which makes sense!! Others I just want to say whatever reality show or biopic even you see,, everything is for entertainment.. nothing is 100% true...
The Netflix movie "Self Made" brought me here. Really disappointed that they didn't celebrate both women, instead of pitting them against one another, through business and colorism. We must do better!
The LIES The LIES The LIES! I watched this series with my 12 year old and had to debunk lie after lie throughout the movie. I get so tired of them mucking up the stories of our legends, it ought to be against the law.
Kera Mommyof5 I agree with you. It infuriates me! The same director and producer of this miniseries, Kasi Lemons, also directed and co-wrote the recent film Harriet. There were tons of lies and misinformation in that film too. She is very problematic. I’m tired of her doing this to our historical icons.
Why? It was INSPIRED BY... It don't have to be every little thing that happened in madam CJ Walker is life, it only was supposed to get the point across that she mad it out and becomes a millionaire. Black folks...CHILL... People always got something to say. Negatively thinking, is such a bad trait.
I never took the movie as factual when the title clearly say "Inspired by the life" in most cases its loosely based on the character. But i didn't like how it would start the lightskin/darkskin girl debate AGAIN.....🤬😪
I didn't take it as a factual movie as well. It did say inspired by oh, it's not the first movie in the world that says inspired by where they add extra things. Although they didn't have to add the light skin black skin, lesbian examples, but again it wasn't a factual movie. It didn't bother me. It was entertaining.
@Sherry Berry i know it hasn't really disappeared COMPLETELY, but it wasn't being talked about or should I say at the forefront of conversations and I feel the way addie was depicted in the series towards MCJW was horrible and can definitely fuel the fire with the colorism debate AGAIN...i truly hope you understand what im saying or i explained it clearly
Yea when I saw that 'inspired by' statement in the promos, I knew I didn't want to see it. Either the story is told correctly, or it isn't worth watching. These days people like to apply this 'age' of cultural themes subliminally throughout the film & dilute the actual truth of what really happened.
Ronnie Wilson You know sometimes you can just watch something and enjoy it. Most of the things in the series were true. Some people make a big deal out of everything. Like do we really always need to be mad at something?
They shouldn't entertain people when it comes to Black History. It should always be educational in my opinion, since black people struggled for the longest to come into prosperity and to overcome the hateful neglect of being Negro, something we still struggle with to this day.
Is your story a dream or a lie, that you'd rather change the situation or scenario by reimagining it in your own perspective about how it shouldn't of happened or that when it did the occurrence of reality changed? And when you changed that, how much was accurate in detail so that you or some people could see through an open imagining the same way?
This movie was absolutely disrespectful and clearly had an agenda to promote a certain lifestyle. This movie took to many liberties. Totally disrespectful
From what I read she hosted parties for the gay people in her community. It’s on the NPR website. I wish they dove deeper into her daughters life and kept the series going after madam cj walkers death . I loved the movie
Uyoyou Ogbe I enjoyed the movie. Not sure if her daughter was gay or bisexual. But from some accounts I read , it isn’t a far fetched idea. But I totally agree with what you’re saying .
Y’all kill me ! As someone who didn’t know much about the story I will say it was refreshing to see such a rich woman of color n this time period I think that made me feel that the movie was aspirational & did do something good. & still should be watched
Can we talk about that cheesy music they kept using, like I don't wanna hear that, I want music from that time lol. The boxing scene was trash too. The movie was really doing the most
I agree, the music really took away from the true early 1900s feeling. Octavia was the only person who (sort of) saved this mess. The music was terrible and most of the acting (besides octavia) was mediocre at best.
I thought the same thing. I wish it had a more serious/dramatic narrative and kept closer to the true events, her life was big enough to not need to make things up. The trailer is nothing like what I watched, still a good movie though.
Well, it was "inspired by" MCJW's life so I didn't expect it to be historically accurate. I enjoyed it, especially since it featured my girl Octavia Spencer ❤.
They conveniently cover themselves with and by using the word 'Inspired' to tell a non-completely fact based story and it's a shame that some people who are unfamiliar with the story will think it's factual.. Thank you for breaking this down! 👏🏼💜
Annie Malone was born in my hometown. I found this out several years ago. I hope someone does a movie on her. I didn't like the character Addie Monroe in the series.
Cloud 10 Yes, Annie was a millionaire believe she was the first African American millionaire. She created a beauty school 🏫 called Poro after her hair grower product. Annie beauty school was large with a gym, bakery, 💒 chapel, and she helped her community with different things. Madem CJ Walker gain more popularity with her business and hair grower she is well known. Madem was very business minded, driven, and have a heart to help black people grow their hair. Madem CJ Walker had a dream and it came true. The movie was great and Octavia Spencer is a brilliant actress. 👌💯 I just not believing Annie had all that time to stalk Madem majority of the time. Madem was a very important women, but if we read up on Annie life she had a successful business too.
Hope Hope Right, I didn’t like the fact that they had Annie come thousands of miles just to try ruin Madam business. I loved this, I still think it can be Oscar worthy 🧐
Hope Hope yes they deserve an award. Movie might not be all the way true but I proud to say I know something about Madam cj walker. She accomplished a lot in short time on earth
I have read this book multiple times and the series is for pure entertainment. it didnt portray hardly an y truth to it. Even if for entertainment..the series should have been truthful..based on facts. Madame CJ Walker, her true life story wasnt portrayed well at all.
This was a horrible series & Tiffany Haddish acting was even worst. I just couldn’t get into it & basically forced myself to watch, since of course I didn’t have anything else to do.
Chanel Shakurrr I agree with this ... I watched it but was like huh throughput most of it .. a lot of it was extra for no reason .. and Tiffany Haddish lord when I saw she was in it I knew her part would make it worse !
I was so excited to watch the series only to be disappointed. The whole light skin dark skin thing turned me off. Clearly the writers depicted some of their own personal feelings into the story.
I found it really irritating how her third husband was so mad because she was making more money than him and he kept telling her why don’t you just work as a laundry lady like really dude
But i also don't like how she made him feel small. She was quite selfish on that part. His husband supported her. He even agreed transferring city only to be stepped down by her wife. He was basically excluded in the company when they could have been working together. That was one reason why he changed. But yes, that does not explain his disloyalty and adultery issue. He is still wrong. Also, Sarah, seemed quite not thankful of annie. She seemed she has no sense of obligation for the help she owed annie. It was annie who helped her from the beginning. But what happened in the movie is she even stole and competed with annie. Which for me is quite troublesome. Seems like she has no debt of gratitute towards people who helped her. I don't know if this is because there are a lot of changes and lies in the way thw movie was made, but at the end of the movie, sarah for me seemed so selfish and unfair towards her husband and annie.
Selina Allen I think this movie does no justice to black peoples! She didn’t have class and her husband wasnt portrayed as a strong black man, and her daughter was seen as frivolous and silly.
N Watson We should not idolize successful people. They too are human with dysfunctional family and personality problems. Though they may be successful in their businesses.
Can we talk about how they made Booker T Washington a light-skinned man. I actually thought he was WEB DuBois?! Washington clearly had a little more brown on him if you referenced the history books. 🤦🏾♀️ The Casting Team missed the mark on this one.
These Executive Producers were Octavia Spencer and Lebron James, so what did white people have to do with portraying a negative light on Black People? Now with this being said, it proves that the Lack of Knowledge is a deadly weapon. Read and gain your own information independently. Turn the Enemy OFF!!!
BUT MADAM CJ WALKERS GREAT GRAND DAUGHTER HAD DIRECT INPUT AND HELPED WITH THE SERIES SO AGAIN, STOP BLAMING "WHITE PEOPLE" WHEN ITS YOUR OWN DAMN PEOPLE 90% OF THE TIME.
The title says “INSPIRED”. Inspired by the the life story of MCJW. If the title was “based on a true story” or another similar title, than I can understand your scrutiny. As an African American I walked away from this movie empowered by MCJW perseverance and sacrifices. Two of the biggest motifs that I got from watching this series is “hard work beats talent and beauty”, along with “self-worth”. I do not think this series creates a space to degrade dark skin women or pin light skin against dark skinned. Sarah wanted to be the spokes person and saleswomen for Annie and was not afforded the opportunity. in the end MCJW not only created her own company but made her adopted grand daughter of dark complexion the face of the company. Setting and creating new beauty standards. Letting the future generations know not to follow trends instead you creative them, know your worth, and beauty comes in many forms (e.g. the series exalting the African American community in Harlem for their diverse looks that challenged the southern status quo beauty standards). I do not think the additional fictitious story lines within this series hindered MCJW’s legacy. It’s not possible. MCJW is solidified in American History as a entrepreneur, activist, millionaire, and so much more to not of the African American community but the world. Now what did hurt the movie was Tiffany Haddish. My opinion
This is a spectacular review!!!! My thoughts exactly, while I don't support lies, the overall meaning was meant to empower and uplift. I don't like the portrayal of A'Lelia because it isn't true, but what is true is that she was very supportive of the LGBTQ community, and I think this is why they forced it in the series.
@Well Well Well I get that but not a lot of people actually see the difference between the two prefixes. People see typically associate the two as hand and hand.
👏🏾 Thank you! This should inspire one to Google or go to library to learn of her story. And, yes, very inspiring to encourage the black entrepreneurs of the world. The movie "The Banker" gave the same vibe and inspiration. I was inspired to learn of all the black entrepreneurs of the 20th century. Wow, how amazing how they have hidden such history. But, we have no excuse to know our history and contributions with all the information that is accessible to us now. Google it! TH-cam it! SMH
I encourage folks to go to the library and pick up a book by John H. Whitfield "A Friend To All Mankind": Mrs. Annie Turnbo Malone and Poro College Biography. OMG to learn that after watching the Netflix series that folks are aware that the facts are not accurate pertaining to either Madame C.J. Walker nor Mrs. Malone. Folks need to be informed about the amazing legend from my paternal & maternal family origin of St. Louis Mrs. Annie Minerva Turnbo Malone. Who was an established business woman amongst 1 of the 1st Millionaire who became the president of Poro College Beauty School. Madame C.J. Walker received her hair care education by selling the ESTABLISHED MILLIONAIRE @ that time beauty business concept directly from selling Annie Malone hair products door to door. To falsely state that Madame C.J. Walker was the 1st Black Women entrepreneur is in correct. Entrepreneur Mrs. Annie Minerva Turnbo Malone was a MILLIONAIRE prior to Madame C.J. Walker neither of these women were the 1st. I have wanted for the last 3 years someone to tell her story first before Madame C.J. Walker but unfortunately many folks are not aware of the truth. I'm extremely grateful that you have posted some of the truth about Mrs. Annie Malone who actually opened up a center for foster care children BTW. I urge everyone to study her many accomplishments that Mrs. Malone an amazing entrepreneur of a few accomplishments. Research the Poro College that she relocated to Chicago which was part of the real estate 2 blocks that she owned. Her story will blow your mind of all of her accomplishments. Today every year St. Louis puts on an annual parade in honor of all of her accomplishments. I totally agree this Netflix was somewhat entertaining and I'm glad that black artists got an opportunity to bring to light the entrepreneur history of our folks. That are normally not told not only from American history but excluded by black men scholar who tell our stories. The fight was silly and dishonoring in the aspect that they portrayed 2 women fighting in a ring was uncalled for in my opinion. The reality of Mrs. Malone & Madame C.J. Walker fall out truth would have been much more informative than that fictitious silly boxing ring BS! The true story of both of the women is worth learning about because they both accomplished awesome monetary & philanthropic gains. I too wonder if someone will come forward from Annie Malone family roots and call out the lies or silliness. BTW I have had the PLEASURE to visit Madame C.J. Walker's beautiful, stunningly designed mansion Villa Lewaro, Walker's lavish Architectural style: Italian Renaissance estate in Irvington, New York. Talk about a gorgeous and grande home my chest stuck out as I toured each room in that classy Villa. It sits literally in the middle of this lovely town in NY called Irvington on Broadway which is the main street. It's located only 20 minute train ride from Manhattan {NYC}. As I toured that amazing mansion the main thought that came to my mind was " imagine the white folks in those days who lived in that town passing by that black architectural designed home owned by a Negro!!!!!! The Architect who designed the beautiful Lewaro was Mr. Vertner Tandy who was the Alpha Phi Alpha co-founder BTW!!!! Villa Lewaro as it was calld is a 34-room 20,000-square-foot mansion located at Fargo Lane and North Broadway in Irvington, New York, 30 miles north of New York City. Madam Walker moved into the home in May 1918 and died there on May 25, 1919. New York FYI: The town of Irvington, sometimes known as Irvington-on-Hudson, is an affluent suburban village in the town of Greenburgh in Westchester County, New York, United States. Irvington is amongst the top 10 richest towns in the state of New York what a feat!!! It is located on the eastern bank of the Hudson River, 20 miles (32 km) north of midtown Manhattan in New York City, and is served by a station stop on the Metro-North Hudson Line. The train stop on the Metro-North Hudson Line is Ardsley-on-Hudson ZIP code: 10533, 10503 The estate is now privately owned so no one can tour the home inside but it can be viewed from the main streets. I urge any folks visiting New York they should discover our beautiful area of upstate which beauty is breathe taking. They should drive through that lovely town and area stop to do some antique shopping after viewing the mansion or stop @ some of the lovely restaurants in that vicinity.
@@Taryn857 I would love to see this comment translated into a video presentation. Thank you for the historical information about Annie Malone. She sounds like a remarkable woman and unsung historical figure. I would love to see her biography brought to film. The way that she was portrayed in the series is shameful. I have visited West Chester county but have never seen or toured Mrs. Walker's former estate. I will certainly check it out on my next visit. Thank you for the insight. Peace and Blessings ❣️
So, I guess the “Inspired by the Life of” doesn’t mean anything, huh? I don’t know that I would call these lies as much as I would call it taking creative license. Also, let’s be honest, if the movie didn’t have an antagonist, a mother-daughter conflict and some good old glitz and glamour, would you watch it? I guess I prefer to see this movie as a great message to women, especially women of color, that you can achieve your dreams if you’re willing to work for it, regardless of what nay-sayers think. Oh and one last thing, I think the issue colorist among the Black community, which still exists today, served the plot very well.
You make very good points. Hollywood definitely exaggerates for effect, that's nothing new. But I think it would have been better if they'd made up a completely new character to be her antagonist, instead of misrepresenting the character of Annie Malone (only slightly changing her name), who actually helped Walker, and gave her her start in the business. Same with her daughter. If she wasn't a lesbian, but just "gay friendly" as people keep saying, that's how she could have been portrayed. That could have created mother-daughter tension, especially in those days. Why change the character of a real person who is no longer here to dispute it? (rhetorical question-not actually asking you to answer that :-) )
I totally agree with you, it's like the movie industry has some contract connection in the industry of film to promote LGBT or something? I'm disapointed this movie was totally fabricated on False for entertainment stereo typing and colorism, it's really not necessary. Perhaps there is a real documentary.
LeeLee I agree and also refuse to watch HARRIET. All of those racists were trying to kill Harriet and they made a fake black bounty hunter, which doesn’t even make sense.
They wanted to play light skin off against dark skin women, they wanted to portray successful black woman as not needing a man , they also undermined the black man in this movie. SMH
@@myisglim7801 Every black male character in this movie was either emasculated or a bad guy. And it didn't matter how Madam CJ treated them, she was considered always in the right.
I am a Living History Actor and Madam CJ Walker is one of my characters. I researched extensively and I agree with you! I was not happy watching it.....
Driving with Ms. Purple😘💜 Mrs C.J Walker was the first recorded not trying to take anything away from here... But their were many... Mary Ellen Pleasant was one before Mrs Walker...
@@X.O.143 annie malone was the self 1st millionaire woman. Also a daughter of former slaves like madam cj walker. Histories are similar and the fact that annie malone put her on to the hair business by making her a sale agent. Madam cj walker basically did the same thing annie malone in fact she did recipe and all. Both women have amazing stories and the fact that they were 1 generation removed from slavery is amazing.
I thought it was just me... I couldn't get passed her 'comedian sensibilities' I made that up, but hopefully you understand me LOL!!! I was like is she serious, slow, being funny, having a 1930's girlz trip wtf Tif!?! She finally got it together, right before the credits!!😂😭😂😭😂😭😂
Honestly when I saw “INSPIRED by the life of madame CJ Walker” I already knew they were gonna feed us some bull. That being said it was enjoyable and I appreciate black people working. I didn’t like the pitting two women against each other like they always do. Frankly I would’ve enjoyed Madame fighting against being under estimated as a woman way more than her fighting against another woman just the way they portray the story of Marvelous Mrs. Maisel. Also, if they were going to lie so much then change the characters names and just make it a fictional story we still would’ve watched and enjoyed it and it wouldn’t be in the shadow of a real person. The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel is based off of real characters like Joan Rivers but because they didn’t make it a biography you don’t have to live up to someone so big and offend so many people.
after watching this... throw the whole series away. I'd rather them just made a series about a fictional hair product mogul. This was misleading as hell and dangerous. Fed stereotypes of colorism, male/female power struggle in relationships and cast real people in unncecessary negative light.
It wasn’t a documentary, and there was singing and dancing in it so it’s a movie not to be taken so literally. She really did live next door to Rockefeller here in NY I went to the home someone lives there now.
I understand it’s not a documentary but they still took a lot of liberties with this movie. More than usual. Plus, you have to understand that alot of people don’t read and research for themselves so they will take this whole movie as gospel. I always do my own research, but many don’t.
I see this argument a lot. A documentary is not 100% based in fact. There is also some guess work and dramatic license in documentaries. This issue here was not if it was a documentary or a series inspired by or based on historical figures, it's what they chose to dramatize and take liberty with to suit certain agendas. I think this is widely known.
Incognita this wasn’t even a documentary meaning singing and dancing in someone’s mind means don’t take it as truth. I watched it thank you Netflix and it was good. I would have paid to see it. But that’s just me I support all African American made and produced or actors movies and tv show. Hell we on lock down in NY it took up a good park of my long day.

Yes we do still have that parade every year I am a proud citizen of St Louis Missouri St Louis City. And when I started to watch the movie I also thought the name sounded familiar and it didn't quite go along with the storyline but I guess anything to make a buck.
@@Taryn857 Come THROUGH with the knowledge! As a born and raised St. Louisan, I appreciate you for knowing these things that many from St. Louis don't even know. Thanks!
The movie states it is “inspired by” not “based on true events” so that implies the story will be largely fictional and I thought we all knew this?! With that understanding I enjoyed the movie!!
I'm so glad that you did this video. Madam CJ Walker did door to door sales for Annie Malone. Annie Malone was actually a millionaire before Madam CJ Walker. Being a St. Louis native we grew up knowing the name Annie Malone bc she had a large orphanage here and we still have the Annie Malone parade here every year.
Right! Just like in the movie Hidden Figures, which was also a phenomenal movie, but too had fictitious parts. The times we see Taraji running around and across the buildings just to go to the colored bathroom was entirely made up as well. Katherine Johnson said so in an interview that she did not have to do that. She just simply went to the restroom in her work area. Parts made up simply for dramatic effect, but did that make the movie any less good because it was untrue? People really need to lighten up and quit picking apart stuff just because.
The issue is, that young, impressionable minds may not be able to separate face from fiction. Is factual black history being taught in the school systems? I doubt it. This may be the only exposure they get to our history, and to see it twisted for entertaining purposes is sad. Isn't the factual history encouraging and inspiring enough?
They should've changed the names then. You most of the same names and likelinesses and then weave lies throughout these real people's stories and expect people to receive it as fairytale.
I would LOVE to see an accurate documentary about Madame C.J. Walker too. I enjoy watching and learning the facts about people and how they actually lived without the lense of today's ideals forced upon the vision of who they really were. She was a true hero of black history's entrepreneurial spirit. By putting her face on her products she decried the notion that dark skin or African features were not beautiful. She MADE them beautiful, acceptable, and essential for all women of color. Her strong advertising campaign worked successfully to her advantage but also helped inspire black women from every walk of life. This intimate act was empowering!
Hmmm... So we just gone attack Netflix? We not going to say anything about Madam CJ Walkers granddaughter who wrote the book the movie was inspired by and that she also approved the project? We not going to talk about the top five Executive black producers who worked the project? Janine Sherman Barrois Elle Johnson Maverick Carter LeBron James Octavia Spencer We just gone come at Netflix and Hollywood? SMH.....
whether its for entertainment or its "inspired", its irresponsible to rewrite history where it makes real people look bad (based on fiction) and diminish their legacy. I'm dissapointed Octavia did this project, she had been taking on so many interesting roles lately
You can write anything without permission from all parties are you can be sued. They probably were not given permission from everyone so they changed names and stories.
There are so many black actresses but Tiffany Haddish is one of the few making millions in the box office and on film each year. Why? I've never seen her in a serious role so I'll try not to judge before seeing it but in real life, Octavia and Tiffany are only 6 years apart. Like, yall couldn't find a talented brown skinned actress to play Madam CJ's daughter? I just feel like Tiffany has been shoved down our throats for over a decade when there are so many talented black actresses out there who get no screen time. I know actresses play younger roles but in this case, Tiffany is 40 and looks about 40. Shes no Angela Bassett who can look 20+ years younger than she actually is. Angela can do no wrong in my book so maybe I'm bias.
Tiffany’s acting in this is horrible and She looks 40 like Octavia’s sister instead of daughter. She can’t play 20 year old because she doesn’t have a young face like Bianca Lawson.,
@@wandaerving3065 It's not about tearing her down, it's about demanding true representation. We're tired of only a select few black celebrities playing every single black character ever. That helps create this idea that there's only room for one black woman/male in the room. We want a plethora of famous black actors, not just 5. That's not real representation, that's minority selectism.
@@wandaerving3065 I will make an issue with Hollywood recycling the same black actresses. How is that not an issue for you. There is only room for a few black actresses in Hollywood while there is no limit for white actresses. That's a problem. I dont mind seeing Tiffany and Taraji on my screen, but that's practically ALL I see in leading big roles. It's the truth.
I hated the music in the movie! All that damn modern music in a classic movie just to be a lie I caaaannnnt deal. I'm from St.Louis & it pissed me off that netflix lied!!! Ughh
Stephanie King-Morson I liked it also. I ❤️period pieces which are about the ascetics. The total look of the movie was fabulous. Acting was well done and costumes were fabulous 👍🏾
The colorism theme was injected to show that Madam Walker had to learn to embrace her Afrocentrique beauty rather than the European standard that was embraced at the time. While that was a nice lesson to interject. There's no record of it being true. Plus Addie Munroe was actually great in her own right and accomplished amazing things which there was no portrayal of that in the movie.
As her great grand daughter said, it wasn’t the specific products. It was more of the fact that they started to take care of their hair and moisturize it.
@@lashandabrown6417 The authorized dealer is Sephora that's where you'll find a wide range of her hair care products ..you might catch a couple on Amazon but I'd go to Sephora
I watched the movie and enjoyed it. But to advertise it to be true is very damaging to all. True history shouldn't be distorted. That's the problem now with our history.
I actually loved the series it wasn't perfect but I liked it...However after I did my own research I really disliked there treatment of Annie.... they could have handled her story so much better ....or at the very least make the corrections at the end of the movie to show how amazing Annie really was
Thanks for this!! I couldn't get through the first episode without being tuned off. I get it was for "entertainment" but it was not the best tribute to the Icon Madem CJ WALKER. Our ancestors deserve THE BEST AND TRUTH that they lived in.
Luv and appreciate all the work that went into this. It is an important topic to speak on. *One complaint: the music is so highly repetitive. It started to sound scary (I be watching your videos at night) I don't mind music -just more variety
Here in St Louis we have a children's home called Annie Malone children's home she started orphanage for children and every year we have a Mayday Parade in honor of her Annie Malone was a really great woman and she was not who they portrayed her to be
It was a sad thing that the light skinned women were pitted against darker skinned women, as I believe was in slavery. Nor did I like the fact that none of the men were good models of a man, meaning, they were either abusive, lazy, turncoat or unfaithful. The way we were betrayed caused me to no long watch it. When CJ left, so did I. Thank you for your truth.
This was an excellent commentary and review. Thank you for your continued commitment to integrity and truth concerning our stories. Honesty is always better.
"This movie would have been better if they had focused on the truth." Yep, that sums it up. I was hugely disappointed; I lived for some time just a block from the Indianapolis Madame CJ Walker factory/theater in Indianapolis and looked forward to the series to learn more about this amazing and historically significant woman. Instead they stole her identity and created a made-for-tv-drama using it. Ugh. I'm with you... a bio-pic or a true docudrama should definitely be done. Thanks for doing the research here and I do look forward to reading the books written by A'Lelia Bundles.
The issue is movies about African American history are always made for entertainment and not facts. They did the same thing with Harriett Tubman and in both movies black men were depicted as weak.
Me either. Sulfur was one of Maddie's ingredients, which made it smell bad. They said Madam's product smelled good (or better 🤷🏽♀️) so it couldn't have been the same....right?
Author Tonya D Simmons I didn’t believe that’s storyline with addie and madam or her daughter being gay rebuke that shit but it was interesting mini series
I don’t have Netflix, nor have I heard about this series until today. I’ve never even heard about Madame CJ Walker until seeing a short video that came up on my feed. I would really like to see it and hopefully will one day. Until then I’m very thankful I found your review about what the show got wrong and what actually happened. You have done excellent research on Madame Walker, her life, her daughter and how she really got her business started. Great job and thank you for seeking out the true.
Because she was technically “married” doesn’t mean she was ever “interested” in men. Marriage is a legal thing. By law, you needed to be married to get into, and to be allowed to do certain things, belong to and participate in business, fortune 500 and conservative thing tanks even now. So marriage doesn’t define someone’s sexuality at all. Proper investigatory procedures involve speaking to people and having access to letters and documents that you might not otherwise have access to.
My grandmother comes from generations of lighter skin blacks...when she was growing up her family was very strict on "keeping the blood line pure" you could not have children or marry a dark skin man...i dont blame her because thats what she was taught. People not to long ago was told not to date or associate with darker skin girls...families who was lighter skin told their children who was light like them that they came from premium stock....so i can honestly see how the colorism could have been accurate

You should pick up the book ‘A friend to All Mankind’ Mrs Annie Turnbo Malone and Poro College’. By John H Whitfield. My daughter recently did her Black History project on this amazing woman. Additionally, there is a documentary on Amazon Prime of Annie Malone. With your platform, this would be a great opportunity for you to discuss the accomplishments of both women. The movie used used a lot of inspiration from the book. They were competitors no doubt about it. But what we should be focused on is how these amazing BLACK women built empires (factories, schools, top employers) in a time when women had just been granted the right to vote!

Kay F Biz right. They ain’t silk. Trying to tackle colorism with colorism 😒
Kay F Biz All Truth
Not only that but men would go crazy over their hair. She could be 300 lbs with zitts all over her face and it wouldn’t matter
Light skinned does not always equate dainty and cute ....
True
I don’t understand why they felt the need to “dramatize” her story. MCJW & her daughter A'lelia life and rise to fame was interesting enough without all the lies. 🤷🏾♀️
Open Your Big Black Mouf! Yes, Their real stories had enough drama.
Amen!
That would've took more money and more effort then anyone was willing to do.
I agree, But since they never claimed it all to be factual. Just inspired by Madam Walkers life. That whole colorism thing was over done and quite unnecessary since it took away from the real story. I prefer they stick to the facts rather than embellish.
Its Hollywood, why did you expect anything different? It’s about ratings for Netflix.
I felt like the movie focused more on modern day agendas and stigmas rather than the true story and history of Madam C.J. Walker. It was a let down for me.
Yes! They chose to entertain than teach!
You hit the nail on the head!
.... just tell the story of her life! Her life history can stand on its own as value entertainment. Nothing extra needed to be added.
Natalie Mitchell We have enough fiction in our world, we sure need more truth!!
And "Inspired By" already tells you that everything in the movie won't be factual.

Bingo! Lol
And that's not ok.

Lisnist exactly. It was colorism plain and simple, painting lighter women as the enemy
I agree.
Annie bought into the whole colorism thing her grandmother planted in her head that because she was light skinned she had the world at her finger tips and darker skinned women were beneath and they all wanted to look like her ....she underestimated the underdog and continued to play dirty
chantel dunlap the thing is that Annie never existed. Is colorism raging in America, absolutely, but Annie never existed.
Poetically Correct I was doing the same thing. I didn’t understand why they kept pushing that narrative.

Kay F Biz girrrrrl.... that whole savior trope is SO tired!!!!!
and to Elyse George White people have the money and before you say "black people have the money", whites have the control of the platforms and distribution of entertainment.
Yes I totally agree, I wanted to see the real deal. Her life was so interesting esp for that period.

Agree. Inspired by. Loosely based, therefore, no lies. Just a real life story with liberty to create stories to make a movie

This wasn't a biopic it was historical fiction. The story was "inspired" by true events. In most historical fiction liberties are taken.

Kelli Jasper yea and a whole lot of bullshit
Yea when I saw that 'inspired by' statement in the promos, I knew I didn't want to see it. Either the story is told correctly, or it isn't worth watching. These days people like to apply this 'age' of cultural themes subliminally throughout the film & dilute the actual truth of what really happened.
Ronnie Wilson
You know sometimes you can just watch something and enjoy it.
Those of us who care must tell our own stories and not just the ones of growing up poor, in a single parent home, on welfare, with guns and drugs.
Is your story a dream or a lie, that you'd rather change the situation or scenario by reimagining it in your own perspective about how it shouldn't of happened or that when it did the occurrence of reality changed? And when you changed that, how much was accurate in detail so that you or some people could see through an open imagining the same way?
What you are looking for is called documentary, and TV shows about historic figures are also made to educate.

This was a horrible series & Tiffany Haddish acting was even worst. I just couldn’t get into it & basically forced myself to watch, since of course I didn’t have anything else to do.
Chanel Shakurrr me too
Same lol
Chanel Shakurrr I agree with this ... I watched it but was like huh throughput most of it .. a lot of it was extra for no reason .. and Tiffany Haddish lord when I saw she was in it I knew her part would make it worse !
Mee too 🤷♀️🤷♀️🤷♀️🤷♀️🤦♀️🤦♀️🤦♀️
Tiffany Haddish was the worst in this.... I completely agree with that 🤷🏾♀️
I was so excited to watch the series only to be disappointed.
I don't know if this is because there are a lot of changes and lies in the way thw movie was made, but at the end of the movie, sarah for me seemed so selfish
and unfair towards her husband and annie.
I knew it was lies when I watched it because I'm a hairstylist and I wrote several reports on her on in beauty school and college.
Chocolate Coated Life right same I was wait a minute why he soo damn light
His skin colour doesn’t add or take anything though.
Chocolate Coated Life Booker T was light-skinned. His father was known to be a whit man, so the character was portrayed accurately.
Chocolate Coated Life I felt the same but I enjoyed the his performance
This is just another episode of “what white people thought of us”
White people. Aka
COLORISM.

Again thank you for the insight.
I didn’t like it I couldn’t stomach the movie
BUT MADAM CJ WALKERS GREAT GRAND DAUGHTER HAD DIRECT INPUT AND HELPED WITH THE SERIES SO AGAIN, STOP BLAMING "WHITE PEOPLE" WHEN ITS YOUR OWN DAMN PEOPLE 90% OF THE TIME.
Netflix could've kept this if they weren't going do something legit!! This could've been a beautiful...but noooo they wanted to play
I appreciate this comment.
Tru Kwene We don’t know what was or wasn’t true.
Walker's beautiful, stunningly designed mansion Villa Lewaro, Walker's lavish Architectural style: Italian Renaissance
estate in Irvington, New York.
The train stop on the Metro-North Hudson Line is Ardsley-on-Hudson ZIP code: 10533, 10503
The estate is now privately owned so no one can tour the home inside but it can be viewed from the main streets.
Ms Annie family has spoken out and set the record straight.
I need to look that up. Glad to hear this. She doesn’t deserve to be maligned.
Ameeen
You make very good points. Hollywood definitely exaggerates for effect, that's nothing new. But I think it would have been better if they'd made up a completely new character to be her antagonist, instead of misrepresenting the character of Annie Malone (only slightly changing her name), who actually helped Walker, and gave her her start in the business. Same with her daughter. If she wasn't a lesbian, but just "gay friendly" as people keep saying, that's how she could have been portrayed. That could have created mother-daughter tension, especially in those days. Why change the character of a real person who is no longer here to dispute it? (rhetorical question-not actually asking you to answer that :-) )
Well said
👏👏👏👏👏👏
Exactly! People need to read more and this is a prime example of how important it is for each of us to do such a thing. The word here is INSPIRED.
The way they handled colorism was disturbing and they were pushing the gay agenda hard in this movie.
I totally agree with you, it's like the movie industry has some contract connection in the industry of film to promote LGBT or something? I'm disapointed this movie was totally fabricated on False for entertainment stereo typing and colorism, it's really not necessary. Perhaps there is a real documentary.

Harriet Tubman was amazing though

I didn’t like how the movie made Annie Malone look bad. Annie accomplished and done a lot of great things for others.

In order to make Madame C.J. Walker the hero of the series they had to make her husband CJ & Addie Monroe her rivals/ bad guys.
Right, she had to have adversaries. I just think in reality, there were real, actual factual adversaries that she had to deal with.
Lie #6 she was not the first black female millionaire...
First Female Self Made Millionaire. There's a difference and that title went for black or white
Teach who was then
Driving with Ms. Purple😘💜 Mrs C.J Walker was the first recorded not trying to take anything away from here... But their were many... Mary Ellen Pleasant was one before Mrs Walker...

Ditto, while I love Haddish she was not right for the role.
She acted young according to the character tho. She added an innocent comedic refreshment to the story.
I agree. Tiffany was too old and is not a good actress
I agree. The movie was inspired by her story so its obvious the film would dramatize somethings for entertainment purpose.
Lisa Cox we really should read up on people. I would hope they didn’t take how Denzel Washington played Malcolm X was exactly how he was.

I said the samething .. they love giving her those type of roles! Like can I see this woman play something else!
Most movies are fictitious...it was made for entertainment.
This was not a documentary 🤷🏽♀️🤦🏽♀️
Janine Sherman Barrois
Elle Johnson
Maverick Carter
LeBron James
Octavia Spencer
We just gone come at Netflix and Hollywood? SMH.....
whether its for entertainment or its "inspired", its irresponsible to rewrite history where it makes real people look bad (based on fiction) and diminish their legacy. I'm dissapointed Octavia did this project, she had been taking on so many interesting roles lately
You can write anything without permission from all parties are you can be sued. They probably were not given permission from everyone so they changed names and stories.
Yea this was not it for me. They got too comfortable trying to spice up a story. Debunk city.

Tiffany’s acting in this is horrible and She looks 40 like Octavia’s sister instead of daughter. She can’t play 20 year old because she doesn’t have a young face like Bianca Lawson.,
@@wandaerving3065
It's not about tearing her down, it's about demanding true representation.
This is why I don't even care about movies like this anymore because I know they will always destroy and disrespect history
I hated the music in the movie!
All that damn modern music in a classic movie just to be a lie
I caaaannnnt deal. I'm from St.Louis & it pissed me off that netflix lied!!! Ughh
I would never take this movie as factual. It was loosely based off of Madame CJ Walker’s life-simply for entertainment. I liked it.
Stephanie King-Morson I liked it also. I ❤️period pieces which are about the ascetics. The total look of the movie was fabulous. Acting was well done and costumes were fabulous 👍🏾
I believe that's why it says Inspried by life of Madam CJ Walker because it's not a autobiography it's a tv series for entertainment.
@@darlenetillman7084 Tiffany Haddish was terrible as usual
WORD! PLEASE WATCH MY VIDEO I MARRIED A WHITE GUY!
Stephanie King-Morson Sams
Thank you for this video because so many people believed every word in the movie and ran with all the lies !! 🤦🏽♀️
Exactly. Like Addie Monroe was not her real name. Her real name is Annie Malone
Damn throw the whole damn series away. Also Annie was the 1st millionaire I hear. I need to know what is in that hair grower.
Ms, Jones,,, I need to know to! Lol
Madam CJ Walker products are still available to the public today
They want you to buy it they're not handing over that formula
As her great grand daughter said, it wasn’t the specific products. It was more of the fact that they started to take care of their hair and moisturize it.
@@EndeGO.P Where can I buy it?
@@lashandabrown6417 The authorized dealer is Sephora that's where you'll find a wide range of her hair care products ..you might catch a couple on Amazon but I'd go to Sephora
I watched the movie and enjoyed it. But to advertise it to be true is very damaging to all. True history shouldn't be distorted. That's the problem now with our history.
I actually loved the series it wasn't perfect but I liked it...However after I did my own research I really disliked there treatment of Annie.... they could have handled her story so much better ....or at the very least make the corrections at the end of the movie to show how amazing Annie really was
Thx for this. Reminds me of alot of the lies found in harriet
Cali Monae I haven’t watched Harriet yet.
Lailah Lynn I’d love to know your thoughts
@monique bedford me either... NOW that movie is a disgrace to all black folks and that's what's up!
monique bedford Haven't watched it and probably never will.
Check the EP credits for Harriet and this docuseries...you'll find a common denominator. 😎 She's starting to look like a whole headcase!
Thanks for this!! I couldn't get through the first episode without being tuned off. I get it was for "entertainment" but it was not the best tribute to the Icon Madem CJ WALKER. Our ancestors deserve THE BEST AND TRUTH that they lived in.
Your research on this is impeccable!
Luv and appreciate all the work that went into this. It is an important topic to speak on.
*One complaint: the music is so highly repetitive. It started to sound scary (I be watching your videos at night)
I don't mind music -just more variety
When you read a book and then sees the movie they are very different. That’s why you do your homework
Here in St Louis we have a children's home called Annie Malone children's home she started orphanage for children and every year we have a Mayday Parade in honor of her Annie Malone was a really great woman and she was not who they portrayed her to be
💯💯💯
I wasn’t gone watch it anyway I knew they couldn’t rightfully honor black women in a film
@IAmFozzy100 backed and paid for by white people. It doesnt hit the screen until whitey approves.
@IAmFozzy100 backed and payed by white people
Furthermore self haters exist
I don't believe she stole that lady ingredients. That was a good movie
Me either
Me either. Sulfur was one of Maddie's ingredients, which made it smell bad. They said Madam's product smelled good (or better 🤷🏽♀️) so it couldn't have been the same....right?
I don't care how good the movie is. It's a turn off when the movie is untrue.
Author Tonya D Simmons I didn’t believe that’s storyline with addie and madam or her daughter being gay rebuke that shit but it was interesting mini series
i believe she did, people are greedy and thief from ancient times
That's the same kind of conversations that White people could be having amongst their own about blacks.
I know many families like that in Mississippi and Tennessee
Thank you. This was based on that day and age and this is the ignorant way they thought. Sadly some less fortunate ones still think this way too.
@@sORrYiMLaTe_wHAtdiDiMisSabsolutely correct! But you know back than(still now but they like to cover it up with love is love) light bright and damn near white was beauty, money and power...
@@renaissancewoman100 YES...Matter of fact my Grandma aunt down south in Tennessee wanted her to marry her second cousin who was also light skin to keep it "pure"
There are alot of these so called "True Stories" are fake like the movie The Blind Side 🤦♀️🤦♀️🤷♀️
They never said it was the true story of , they said" inspired by the life of". After reading that , I was not looking to be educated .
Yea, I noticed under the title it says "inspired" by the story of Madam CJ Walker.

The sad thing is that young people today watching this series will take it as the truth.
