    I have been using Artix Linux XFCE openrc on multiple PCs for two years.
    It is for me the best distro among all those I have tested and used for twenty years.

      "Right out the gate" is a sporting analogy, taken from horse racing. The starting gate restrains the horses until the start and keeps them in the same position to ensure fairness. The phrase therefore means "straight away" or "immediately".

    For services most packages comes with an extra package. Networkmanager to run you also need networkmanager-runit. The same goes for openvpn if you got any issues with VPN. I'm really failing at explaining here :D but if you install networkmanager-openvpn there going to be an networkmanager-openvpn-runit for example, wich you need to be able to start the daemon. If I remember correctly

    Being not so knowledgeable about Linux, I would have liked to know what difficulties using an alternative can cause for the user? Most apps and services might have used systemd, so would they have a hard time working with this? Would there be a learning curve if someone decides to use this? Any changes if one wants to build a software from source? Basically, what are the implications of using an alternative.

    • @jpwillm5252
      @jpwillm5252 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Artix is not especially intended for beginners.
      But this distribution can be installed very easily thanks to the ISO images offering in addition to the system various graphic environments :
      iso.artixlinux.org/weekly-isos.php
      However, there are not as many graphical tools to configure / install certain parameters (nvidia, kernel, user management etc.) as on Manjaro or Ubuntu for example.
      But if we don't find an answer in the wiki, we will probably find the answer on the forum:
      wiki.artixlinux.org/
      forum.artixlinux.org/index.php/topic,1923.0.html

      @@edupazz It's been a fair bit of a learning curve but I have encountered fewer bugs (so far, fingers crossed). That being said the updates can be a little slower to come out after the kernel updates, but not heaps lower. I think that may have a little more to do with it not being one of the really mainstream distros and having a smaller team working on it. Without Systemd the system boots a hell of a lot faster and seems to have less sitting in RAM all the time. So I guess it has its pros and cons. The upside side of systemd is it takes care of all of that daemon stuff by itself, the downside is that it is clunkier and slower. I'm still on the learning curve with it though.

      There are various reasons. The simplest one is, some dont like Pottering the main developer. He is apperantly a difficult person to work and discuss with. But probably the main reason its not the UNIX Philosophy of multiple small programs who do one job. SystemD idea is to provide a system layer which combines init, cron, session management, dns, time etc. Then some modules were optional and are now mandatory. Another controversial topic are the binary logs and the default shipped DNS Resolver is one from google. Also an app which depends on systemd functionality is not as portable like another. This combined gives probably the default "hate".
      I personally do not care. Everyone should use what they want. Discussing strength and weakness of one system above another is important. Just dont start a flameware and there are always two sides to start one. :)

      Actually, rumors about runit is abandoned are greatly exaggerated. It is being developed, in both Artix and Void Linux, and these two distros take slightly different ways of developing. For me, I find OpenRC more mature and flexible than runit, although I do like runit too. I use Artix OpenRC btw. Also, I suppose every Arch-based distro (as well as vanilla Arch) does everything, the choice is a matter of preference and personal tastes. And this is why we can never have nice things in Linux, because 99.99% of the people complaining about systemd never actually experience anything bad from it. They just tout ideologies they don't even understand.
    If next week, the Linux kernel would be merged into systemd along with a game of Tetris, I still wouldn't care the same way I don't care about how my hometown's electrical grid is sep up, as long as it works.
    If you hate systemd, you should also hate Linux and use a "proper" microkernel, because Linux is a bloated mess if we truly believe in the everything should do less things ideology. Linux won, Hurd lost, because in the real world, people's first concern is that the damn thing should work, how pure something is might not even make it to the top ten in the real world.
    I used systemd, it's awesome, haters, who probably never use it directly are gonna hate.

      As a user I want my system to boot as fast as possible and you can't really do that with a simple init system.
      As a developer I want most distros to have the same init system and for that system to have a simple consistent APIs so that I don't waste afternoons trying to figure out how to get my stuff working with distro Xs init system.

      @folksurvival 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ANISMIK "It does still work, just like the old init systems, but you would be hard pressed to find people wanting to use it,"
      And that's why your comparison to DOS was so poor because many people today want to use and do use other init systems other than systemd. There are many Linux distros, BSDs, Windows and Mac on machines that do not use systemd. There are many servers running Debian, for example, which now uses systemd but there are also many servers running one of the BSDs that do not use systemd, so I wouldn't be surprised if there are currently more computers in the world running fine without systemd (even including servers) than with it. I don't know how much of DOS Windows still has "under the hood" today, if it's still significant then maybe you could argue DOS is still in popular use via Windows.
      "because while just like the legacy init systems, it was conceived during simpler times and today you would want something more sophisticated"
      UNIX, which Linux and the BSDs are heavily based on, came at least ten years before DOS but you're not arguing that UNIX and its file structure, commands, programs etc are old and out of date and that people wouldn't want anything UNIX or UNIX-like today because it is "not sophisticated enough". The knife or the wheel were conceived of during simpler times but they are just as good and useful designs and tools today as they always were and don't need to be replaced.
      "As a user I want my system to boot as fast as possible..."
      Then you'd want to use something like Runit or S6 which are faster than systemd.
      "...and you can't really do that with a simple init system."
      Why not?
      "As a developer I want most distros to have the same init system..."
      Ok but why is Red Hat's systemd the only acceptable one to have as the one and only init system (even though it's more a suite of programs - from my understanding - than an init system)?
      You could have campaigned for the other init systems that were standard to have remained instead of being changed for something different.
      "...and for that system to have a simple consistent APIs..."
      Then surely you'd prefer to have a simpler standard init system instead of the more complex systemd?
      "...so that I don't waste afternoons trying to figure out how to get my stuff working with distro Xs init system."
      Ok but that wouldn't have been an issue if some distros hadn't decided to break away from conventions and start implementing the new systemd in the first place.
