    May seem unrelated, but it's also very important your shooting mode is set to RAW only, not RAW+JPEG. You will be allowed a significantly higher amount of recording time. I can shoot 1726x736 for 12-14 seconds, which is enough to make most shots for a film. It's a pain in the ass, but it's enough.
    The MkIII can shoot continuously in full HD (apparently the end result is comparable to many of the RED cameras), so it's much more ideal if you can spare the extra $1800. :/

    Until I saw this, I was planning on scoring a 6D for $350 on CL. I know it's been a decade since you made this but have you tried newer versions of ML? Thank you.

    • @kevingrote
      @kevingrote  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      $350 sounds like a steal. But no, I haven't tried any recent versions of Magic Lantern. There are so many other cameras out there that already do everything ML does. I personally feel like Canon abandoned their video customer base a long time ago, and instead of creating a simple firmware update to add additional features to preexisting cameras, they instead came out with new, much more expensive cameras that include those features. Magic Lantern brought those features to the average Canon user without any extra cost. But every other camera manufacturer out there just gave us those features without a workaround. So I haven't shot video on a Canon in close to a decade. However, I still use Canons regularly for photography, including my old faithful 6D. So $350 for a solid full frame stills camera is still a great deal, but if you're wanting to shoot higher quality video, Canon would be the last brand I'd recommend at this point. The Canon cameras that actually capture high quality video are much more expensive than other brands. You'd get much better quality video from a brand new $500 Panasonic than you'll get with a used 6D and ML.

  • @jaybruce911
    @jaybruce911 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    The reason it can't hit the specified write speeds is because that card is UHS-II, The 6D only supports UHS-I. If you had shown the back of the card, you can easily see an entirely new row of pins that UHS-II use in supported devices. Also, the 6D has never tested close to max throughput of even UHS-I. Any UHS-I card with a U3 speed rating(minimum 30MB MB/s) should give the best performance. On a side note, have you tried to see if 4k is supported for time lapse videos? i.e. 4k at 3 or 4fps?

    • @kevingrote
      @kevingrote  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      The problem is not the card, it is the camera. The camera cannot write the data fast enough enough. If you want to shoot RAW video at 1080p, you have to use a Canon camera that takes Compact Flash cards.

  • @stilo_films
    @stilo_films 10 ปีที่แล้ว

    Greetings Kevin , as managed to solve the problem with the option of recording in RAW?
    I have the same problem, and purchased more fast memories, but still continue to be arrested . only in lower resolution allows me to record , but ideally at least be able to record in HD , adequate resolution, without pausing . I hope allas been already solved, and explain it in a video . thanks and regards .

    • @kevingrote
      @kevingrote  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well it turns out that the problem does not lie in the speed of the memory card, but the camera. The cameras hardware is not capable of writing to an SD card fast enough to record 1080p in RAW. So even though a really fast SD card (like the one in this video) could handle it just fine, the camera cannot.

    hmmmm... I see others doing it on youtube for way longer durations then 5 sec. So it looks like it could be done some how.. right? I just installed ML on my 6D and Im trying to figure it out.. If I change my fps to 32 will that really help? Even with the ISO re adjusted will that actually look good? Im running a sans 32 (80mb/s).

    • @kevingrote
      @kevingrote  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      You can definitely record longer than 5 seconds, but you have to lower the resolution. I'd keep your frame rate at 24 or 30. I see no benefit to shooting anything other than that. I think 60fps would be nice, but even with ML, the camera is just not capable of handling that. Basically the bottleneck lies in the hardware of the Canon cameras. The camera is incapable of writing data faster than around 40mb/s (I believe....don't quote me on that, I could be wrong.) But it seems like it doesn't matter too much what speeds your SD card is capable of because the camera can't handle anything more than that. The exception is a camera that can record to Compact Flash cards, like the 5D Mk III. Those are capable of recording higher resolutions in RAW because the hardware for the CF cards is faster than the hardware for the SD cards. I hope that helps.

(i have also 6D) I installed the latest version for 1.1.6 firmware my raw videos are yellow, it's even worse in low light you think this is normal even though my white balance is right? in addition to this problem , my magic lantern plant displays a blue screen ... I actually don't remember which version of ML I was running. this was almost two years ago. I'd say that your issue with the yellows does not sound normal, but if you're shooting RAW, you should be able to correct it without any problems. You could try downloading and reinstalling ML again to see if it changes anything.

  • @Quetzalcoatl0
    @Quetzalcoatl0 8 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    If you done your homework, the 6D has a 41mb/s controller, so you can put 10000 mb/s a card, the controller on the DSLR has a max writing speed of 41mb/s, Also the numbers on the cards are theoretical max speed, this doesn't mean it's gonna write 250mb/s every time, all the time, no matter if you put 1 file or 10000 small files.

    • @kevingrote
      @kevingrote  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I knew the speed of the card wasn't exact and will fluctuate, but I was unaware of the 41mb/s on the 6D. I just assumed it was 30-35mb/s because when I set Magic Lantern to record any higher than 35, it can't handle it. So thanks for the info. Now I know the exact number =D

    im sure u either have 10 new cameras and also already know and have been told 10 times, but you can actually run -> 14bit / 12bit or 10 bit in one build. and then better yet... in the one labled 4k crop res (named that for the features on 5dm3) they actually one upped themselves and made a lossless 14 / 12 / and 10. i dont know the exact rates of compression on the lossless but its damn good. and my 1920 1080 / 24/s 12bit raw is ..... 36mbs compared to the normal 68mbs i think it required / was unatainable.
