    This may be one of the best and simplest instructions for knots I have ever seen. Great Job!

    I worked at this marina for 1 year and never learned any of these knots. It was the best job I ever had though, by far. closest thing 2 heaven on earth. Much love to the crew of Cannons Marina.

    I just got a new to me boat and this instruction was perfect to get me to be able to tie off to the dock and go park my truck if I don't have someone along with me to hold the ropes.
    Thanks!

    Hey! - I Got it! (...Not a moment too soon, as the shark took the bait. - I was then told to stand in behind, wet the reel, ...and yep, he was taking a "hell of a lot of line!") - At any rate, Thanks so much for the video! I was fairly rusty, but this got me back on track!

    Clove hitch is better for fenders. Your stopper is called a figure eight. The cleat hitch you show is not correct. The "two rivers under a bridge" technique is proper and will allow adjustment while under load. Another thing, on land they are called ropes. On a boat they are called lines. Once a line has a job, it gets a name...

    • @Ophiuchus123456789
      @Ophiuchus123456789 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Tracy Spinney Technically, they are called cordage rather than ropes.

    • @bagwan98
      @bagwan98 7 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Ophiuchus123456789, no sir, on all boats they are properly called lines! Farmers and cowboys use ropes. Cordage is just small stuff.

  • @tallbillbassman
    @tallbillbassman 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Nice and simple and well explained. One thing: the tail left by the working end should be 5-10 rope diameters so that it doesnt come undone by accident. Yours were a bit short.

    Please ignore Angela from Cannons Marina. When attaching a mooring line to a cleat a complete round turn should be first step, then you can do a hitch or 2. When attaching lines to railings, the clove hitch, sometimes with 2 initial wraps is correct, I don't know what rubbish she was trying to tie! Her "stopper knot"is actually a figure 8 knot. The bowline is one of the most important knots to learn, just make sure the bitter end is long enough to not slip out. Square knot should be included, it is used much more than figure 8 knot. I am former Coast Guard and retired merchant marine chief mate.

    • @johntripp2028
      @johntripp2028 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Nigel, since I did not see the Coast Guard demonstration I can speak to it. The cleat hitch in this video is simply wrong. It's looks right but looking right won't stop your boat from slipping away. There are two methods of tying the cleat hitch and both are correct depending on the circumstances but her method is a third and incorrect one. Many people will look at her video and think it is correct because it looks correct. But alas her very first wrap is wrong

    The cleat hitch is wrong; the stop knot won't stop much; and they're called fenders, not bumpers, but all these knots might be correct if your boat is a car.

    Use a rolling bowline, it's just a bowline with an extra loop to take the load

    you tied the cleat hitch incorrectly, you called the figure eight knot a stop knot (stop knot is one of the applications of the figure eight), and the "regular knot" you speak about is actually called an overhand knot.

  • @EJL2004

    That knot for the fender or whatever, is complete garbage. Its not a seamans knot at all. Clove hitch or a rolling hitch should be used, just as easy and actually holds. Also the way she finished that knot, that line with a little bit of weight on it would unroll.

    • @GoMiGman
      @GoMiGman 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Very rarely do I hear them being referred to as 'bumpers' I'm with banjajohn on this one, certainly not up here in New England where we live, eat and breathe boating. BUT, I have heard the term used more so in the southern part of the US and also seems to be a thing more commonly associated with the younger generation. I think in about 30 - 50 years, many of the terms we know today will have generation X names by then.

    Id like to know why back in the day i am guessing they decided to use a totally new language for boats? Seems like an unpractical thing but maybe that is the point to get away from land , land is different from water and why not use a totally new language on water to complete the forgetting about land oh my lord.

    • @oceandrew
      @oceandrew 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ships back in the day had thousands of moving parts and bossuns and mates had to have a way to direct crew to those parts without resorting to ... "you know that thing over there? Pull it/Loosen it/Put it away/Fix it!"
      Take a close look at an exploded diagram of a tall ship and there is definitely a method to the madness of naming each sail, sheet, stay, lanyard and hawser that didn't exist on land based vehicles for transport.

    Your cleat hitch is just plain wrong! You should lead the line (ahem, not rope) around the furthest end of the cleat, then take a full turn around the base of the cleat. This is the strongest part of the cleat. First going around the horns applies the load at the weakest point. Afraid you got it all wrong Angela...
