Welcome, Tito! Thanks so much for watching, and we're thrilled you found the video helpful. If you haven't already, please subscribe so you don't miss any new boating vids coming up. We're ramping up production for the season, so we should have more coming soon!
Just applied this to our new boat yesterday. Haven't been on the water since the mid 80's and we didn't have power tilt & trim on the old boat. We're doing the 10 hr break in still. What a difference trimmimg makes, still getting the hang of it. Your video is perfect for people just starting out!! Thanks!
This really made it easy to understand for a newbie. I appreciate the time you took to explain the sweet spot between staying flat and the bow bouncing too much.
Just getting into boating and this is by far the most straightforward video on getting the trim where it needs to be and why. I'm sure there's some more advanced stuff to it, but I feel like I got the basics from this.
Thanks for watching, Darrin! Glad you found it helpful. If you haven't already, make sure you subscribe to our channel. We just shot a follow-up video to this on the difference between tilt and trim, which you might also find helpful. It should be coming out in the next couple months.
Perfect refresher for someone like me that has been off the water for decades. I loved the various camera angles to demonstrate what you were describing. Good job!
bought my 1st boat last month. I have 0 boating experience. I only have a 50hp motor....but your videos are invaluable and have helped me greatly to know what to expect and what to do. Ive watched several of your videos, and they were all well explained and simplified for a novice like me. Thanks.
Thanks! Makes loads of sense. In my Dad's old Evinrude outboard days, the trim was adjusted by sliding a pin out of a hole on the mounting plate and sliding into another to change the engine angle. I was on a speed party boat off Wildwood NJ one year, and the pilot maxed out negative trim for about twenty seconds, and man did we all get soaked! Then he went slightly positive, and we got some sweet air time!
Congrats on the new boat, Jake! Glad you found this video helpful. It's an oldie but never goes out of style. Here's to a fun and safe boating season ahead! (And enjoy getting places a little faster.)😄
Woohoo, Freddy! Thanks for the great feedback. We're thrilled to be able to help. Be sure to subscribe -- we have a good video coming out in the next month or so on the difference between tilt and trim. Here's to a fun and safe boating season ahead!
This is the best trimming explanation video that I have found. I watched several before I got to this one and finally feel like I don’t need to watch another. Thanks for making the video.
As others have said. I watched other trim videos and gained little understanding, after watching yours it's the last video I need to watch! Thanks so much
Thanks for this, I mainly use boat in the Solent ( Portsmouth UK ) and due to the southwesterly winds it can change from calm to lumpy in no time at all. I found your video very informative. Looking forward to trying the "trim down" in lumpy seas.
Important technique - vid should be mandatory for newbies. Also, in rough waves I've had smooth performance trimmed IN against strong wind, but OUT when travelling with wind (following sea condition) to prevent bow from plowing. Allowed safe going in 18-foot bowrider with heavy seas.
2018 and still learning from your video getting my first boat tomorrow and I had no clue what trim was so I started watching a bunch of videos that was not helpful but this one was perfect thanks! Fish On Baby!
Thanks for letting us know, Jay! We're thrilled to hear the video was helpful and you were able to use the info immediately. Here's to a fun, safe, and fuel-efficient summer ahead!
Thanks for watching, Bud! Glad you found it helpful. Be sure to subscribe to our channel -- we have a great video coming up in the next month or so explaining the difference between tilt and trim that you might find interesting as well.
i deffinatly understand now. i was wondering how i seen other boats level and my grampa got his level and i could never get it level. but now i understand why i wasnt able to get it to plane out. makes it hard to see with it up in the air and a hazard if the wind catches the boat right at a faster speed. thank you big time.
You are so welcome, Brandon! Yes, if you run with the bow too high, it's hard to see, uncomfortable, and very inefficient. After getting some practice, you should be able to hear when your boat is properly trimmed. Make sure to subscribe to our channel if you haven't already because we have a good video coming out in the next few months on the difference between tilt and trim, which you might find useful. Thanks so much for watching!
Thanks so much, Clinton, and welcome to boating! Glad we can be part of your education. Make sure to subscribe to our channel to get notified when we post helpful new how-to, maintenance, and boat handling videos--about once a week. Plus we also have more than 100 already in our library that you might find useful.
Thanks for watching! Here's to a great first season. If you haven't already, make sure you subscribe to our channel to receive notifications when new videos are posted!
Thanks for the feedback, Wayne! Glad you found the video helpful. Be sure to subscribe to the BoatUS TH-cam channel to get notifications when new videos are posted. We have a lot of great how-to and boat-handling videos coming up!
Thanks for watching! We all have to start somewhere, and we're glad to be able to help you learn. If you are looking for affordable hands-on boat handling training, check out the courses offered through the BoatUS Foundation at www.boatus.org/on-water. We have courses in many locations around the country, and hopefully they will be starting up again soon. They are three hours of training in small groups with US Coast Guard-licensed captains using NASBLA-approved curriculum. Here's to a fun and safe season ahead!
I'm from Australia Queensland thanks found it very lnformative and easy to comprehend l have a relatively new boat with a new yamaha 70 hp best I've heard it explained thanks again!
I look for the props to be parallel to the water by gauging the engine cowling angle, most have a flat spot to indicate this. Trim to keep the prop thrust horizontal for max forward thrust/efficiency. Other stuff matters but this is key
Thanks for the feedback, Richie. You might also check out this video we did, which uses some drone shots and additional angles: th-cam.com/video/KY61KiWOBzc/w-d-xo.html
Yup, pretty much how i explain the operation to my customers as well. ...And in general most boats are going to be on plane at 3000RPM and up, so safe to say on the majority of boats to have the trim all the way down/in when under 3000RPM and as you increase speed and RPM the boat & engines will want more trim up/out (until porpoising).
New boat owner here, and this is the easiest and best video on this topic on TH-cam! Thanks

My right ear enjoyed it... oh wait they're backwards...

You're very welcome, and thanks for watching! Good thing trim is a whole lot easier with modern outboards.
Just bought my first power boat after years on sail boats. Excellent presentation. Exactly what I'm seeing on the water with my Sea Pro.
Congrats on the new boat, Jake! Glad you found this video helpful. It's an oldie but never goes out of style. Here's to a fun and safe boating season ahead! (And enjoy getting places a little faster.)😄
After watching 20 videos trying to teach how to plane, this one finally nailed it for me. Thank you.
