      The movie really isn’t that good. Yes there are talented actors and they do a great job but in the end Whitey Bulger isn’t that interesting of a character and nobody really wants to see a movie about him.

      @jjones9822 plenty of people do he killed 18 people, was bostons most powerful mob figure, and evaded the fbi for 10 years.

    • @Scott-fy7fm
      @Scott-fy7fm 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      @@jjones9822 I also thought the movie itself was underwhelming, but Depp's individual performance as Whitey could easily be considered worthy of an Oscar nomination regardless of the movies shortcomings.
      I have to highly disagree about people finding Whitey's story interesting, it is far more unique than typical mafia stories, and the popularity of The Departed proves lots of people are interested in the story depending on the presentation.
      I like it better the second time around, but not enough to not still feel disappointed over what could have been. Those initial trailers were done so well and Depp's portrayal in that dinner scene was so chilling I had real high hopes for this movie, and it just didn't rise to that bar

    Depp pulled off a truly frightening character here, in every scene you "feel" he's in charge and a menace...regardless he is being good with family/associates or bad with "friends" and enemies... awesome acting.
    He really gave the spectators the feeling you get being around true mob criminals, the aura of fear and respect they impose on you instinctively.

      Jack Nicholson was supposed to be playing a character like Whitey Bulgar in "The Departed". In my opinion he was horrible in it. He came off too much like the Joker than an intimidating and menacing criminal. Depp is an actor that i never liked Depp (i hate the pirate movies and some of his other projects were just ok) and i was shocked when they said he'd be playing Bulgar. But he was amazing. I think it might be one of Depp's finest performances. Id love if they made a HBO or Showtime series around his character.

      Living in Boston you always heard people talk about Whitey and everyone claimed to have known him or met him at one point, about 95% of those stories were pure bullshit. I remember one night around 2009 or so I'm out at a bar and some loudmouth drunk in his 40's or so starts saying how he's known and not to f*** with him because he knows Whitey and used to work with him, blah blah blah. An old dude at the end of the bar starts laughing at him and tells him to shut the f*** up. Loudmouth starts yelling at the old guy "what, you calling me a liar? You don't know who I am". Old guy calmly stands up, walks over, leans into the guys face and says "No, I don't know who you are, and you are a liar. You never came close to him, you never spoke to him. If you did, you would know to call him Jimmy. If he heard you call him Whitey, we would have left you in a dumpster."
      The drunk dude left a few minutes later and the old guy went back to his drink.

      EXCEPT... This movie was a bit inaccurate in a scene where Bulger strangles a girl while Fleming stands by horrified... When actually in REAL LIFE, it was Fleming who strangled her and Bulger only helped bury the body. And it was TWO women Fleming killed in 1981 and 1985. In this movie Fleming is just a follower, not the FBI informant that he was in REAL LIFE almost 10 years before Whitey became an informant.

    Whitey Bulger was an extremely charming guy in his non criminal life. I was at a dinner event in the late 80s, seated at a table with Billy Bulger, the 2nd most powerful politician in Massachusetts at the time. Also present was chief lawyer for the City of Boston and his wife. The chief lawyers wife grew up with both Bulger brothers in South Boston. She regaled me with stories about what a wonderful young guy Jimmy (Whitey) Bulger was to grow up with. Her stories had a bit of an edge against Billy Bulger, sitting at our table. A very enlightening evening.

      djj44 I don't know it will be better I am just guessing. I actually have not seen either but I know DiCaprio is a far better actor than Depp overall so I am preidcting it will be a better performance.

    • @djj44
      @djj44 9 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Calvin Candie
      You think he is a far better actor than Depp, it is not a fact. For me Depp is the better actor, DiCaprio isn't even on his leven and will never be. He was only at that level in What's Eating Gilbert Grape. I don't say he is a bad actor, but not at that level.
      And he want's to much win a oscar, you can see it in hic acting. So over the top the facial expressions, it isn't even believable. Even in The Revenant trailer, every facial expression must be big.
      From the movies i have seen this year is Depps perfomance the best and is Black Mass the best movie by far.

    • @umahope
      @umahope 8 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      +Calvin Candie Watched both films. Liked "The Revenant " very much. DiCaprio was fantastic! However, I could still see it was DiCaprio. On the other hand Depp submerged into his role so much that I was watching Whitey Bulger himself not the actor. An extraordinary performance! By the way I love both actors. Oscar should go to Depp this time in my opinion.
