    For my ugf boxes I have modified a submersible nano pump with an Inline Waterproof IP65 switch which allows me to switch the unit off and on at a press of a button. This becomes a miniature water vacuum cleaner enabling me to thoroughly clean the ugf box.
    I also have exactly the same sponge filters which I have also modified by placing a small plastic bottle half filled with k1 media thereby the filter is now both a sponge filter and moving bed filter. This has significantly improved the filtration for the tanks.
    I found the ppi of the original foam wasn't coarse enough, so I took them off and wrap around a more course foam instead.

    Try using simple longer piece of airline tubbing to syphon more out. Maybe because it is more flexible, it will bend more inside. Also, you could drill tiny holes along the tubbing so it will cover more area. This year, I will be changing all my tanks to UGF. Such a simple sollution and a lot easier to change substrate.

      Hey Brian, Last time I tried airline tubing it stop working once it touch the muck, maybe it's too small and blocking very easy. Next time I'll try to find slightly smaller diameter tubing and more flexible so I can bend it

    You should put a box inside a box bond your support grill to 4 sides and drop that into a snug box so you can lift your soil out and vacuum the muck out of the main box p.s if your not paying attention and watching! the sounds you make when getting the muck out of the second ugf box sounds a little rude haha
    love your videos by the way

      Good idea but a bit complicated to do also inner box should be water sealed otherwise it will suck water through the gaps at the bottom instead the soil it's gonna be hard task to achieve that. Sorry about sound and thanks for your support!

    Wow I didnt even thought of doing that to the ugf. Will try that whenever ugf gets dirty. I have an idea instead of blowing back the water into the ugf with mouth, we can lift the pail/bucket up and down to reverse and vice versa the suction flow according to our needs. I just dont like putting my mouth into dirty things. any ways love the video :3

    Great video. I always wondered about dirt buildup in the ugf and how to clean it. Which bacteria powder do you like to use?

      Hey Ray, Thanks for watching that boring stuff 😁. I bought my powder from Shrimp Affair and it's made in Taiwan. There is a guy ion facebook from Taiwan selling it but minimum order 1kg and shipping quite expensive. I can drop you a link if you interested just let me know

      @@shrimpmaniadaily thanks for the wonderful content. Shh, also gives me ideas for some upcoming videos too, heh, I'm good for bacteria powder but when I'm close to running out I'll let you know, but honestly does bacteria powder and liquids really make a difference? I think with my healthy shrimp it doesn't really do much but I love dosing random powders into my tanks :)

    • @shrimpmaniadaily
      @shrimpmaniadaily  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey Ray, I don't think it's necessary to dose bacterial powder I think any type of food powder will do, even grinded soya beans should do the job. Just something to feed that all that micro flora and fauna in the tank and beneficial bacteria

    I have been setting up bunch of this type of filter my only concern is the small shrimplets do they go down in the UGF filter if so can they come out of the flow side 🤔

    • @shrimpmaniadaily
      @shrimpmaniadaily  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      They can get inside if you switch the filter off but once you switch it back on they should come out with the flow

    about the bacteria powder after water change, is it recommended to use bacter AE?

    • @shrimpmaniadaily
      @shrimpmaniadaily  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes bacter ae would work the same just something to feed bacteria in the tank. Even high protein food powder would work

    If you did this with an airline hose you could do the full bottom as it would bend?

    You are not supposed to clean it. The idea is to build up material at the bottom that assist with the breakdown of material and chemicals to put it simply and what you removed is critical for the good operation of the filter. These filters can work for years without cleaning. Looks like you miss the point and a good understanding of how under gravel filters work and the science behind it. Go and listen to Professor Kevin Novak’s TH-cams videos in this regard. He is an expert in his field and explain it much better than we could.

    • @shrimpmaniadaily

      I believe that's absolutely fine to clean it sometime. It's plenty of buildups and beneficial bacteria inside the filter. When a lot of buildups at the bottom it start to spitting into the water column clouding the water so its necessary to clean it to to avoid it. Only see a positive effect after cleaning
