Worked a place once where in the *same* speech they praised us for record-breaking profits they also said we were continuing the hiring freeze and unable to do raises because we didn't have the budget.

In the contract, you are given an allotted amount of PTO and that amount is a wage/compensation of its own category that you are contractually allowed to use at your discretion. Them disregarding that after you already scheduled PTO is a breach of contract and often has problems processing moving your already deducted amount around the financing departments back into your account if it's later denied.

I get to be this guy, but. I did three years in the army. I am now the owner of a company it’s a small company, but it’s a company. A wise commander listens to the nature of the gripes of his persons. And if people were talking the way they talking about this chief executive officer the way they would have about me as an executive, it would be an embarrassment. Not genuinely taking care of the stasis of your stakeholders is a mistake. Studies have shown better quality of life produces better work logarithmically. Then you get trustworthy employees that you can count on to actually be a part of the company, And ultimately it generates a better product and brand loyalty. It’s good for them in the long term, but it’s a long term investment. I’m not sure why company is obsessed with quarterly profits and then become surprised that their selection bias is only a quarter long. Unable to connect emotionally or mentally to what a longer term investment would be for the company for themselves and even though it’s more expensive upfront like nuclear energy, the return investment is much better. That being said, the prideful garbage about raising one’s salary at the expense of your people is insane!!! Bad ldrship and bad leadership!

The last interview...I have had applicants who were nearly like that. I felt very sorry that they had not been educated properly, that they sis not know how to adapt their language to the situation. There were 3 of us on the pannel, and the other two were horrified, and frankly, I could not see if this person really had potential. I felt bad: she had been let down.
I agree with everything here, except for the PTO skit. It's simply a fact of how the world works that employees have to get approved for PTO - it's part of the conditions of employment. Taking PTO without approval can be grounds for dismissal because of the abrogation of the contract between an employee and the company. That said, being consistently denied PTO would be grounds for the employee to bring an action against the company. Veronika should have simply put in her request well ahead of time. That is what we do, and our team director makes sure we have the resources on hand to provide adequate coverage when team member is on PTO.

Back when I was working as a lab tech, the company had a staff shortage so the rest of us workers were required to pick up additional duties to get the job done. There was word from management that an open req was going to fill the position soon. Shortly after that, management announced that the open req had been put on hold due to "budget restraints". I expressed my displeasure and soon afterward was reassigned to another position within the company. I felt like a fish out of water at this position, and soon after that, I was laid off. I was 56 yo at the time and should have hired a lawyer. Hindsight.......

The problem with getting the upper salary limit is that they make you “pay” for it by squeezing the life out of you. Had a gig like that that fought the salary request but after caving made my life a living hell. I put up with it for almost a year because of the $ but cut loose because it just wasn’t worth it. Suggest walking away if they dig in their heels at the get go. This is a lesson I learned the hard way.
A few years ago, my Missus put in for 2 weeks PTO/annual leave. It was granted, but then her manager said that she couldn't take her annual leave because they were short of staff. She lost out on that annual leave.
