- In this video drum lesson, we teach you how to play Green Day's "Basket Case" on your drum set by breaking it down so it is easy to understand.

"Basket Case" Drum Lesson Breakdown - Time Stamps Included
0:42 - Play Basket Case the 1st time around w/ music
1:15 - Breakdown the first super juicy drum fill!!
1:42 - Play the first drum fill w/ music
1:53 - Breakdown the 6 snares + cymbal crashes
2:15 - Breakdown of snare crash & timing
2:26 - 4 snares drum section
2:42 - We add tom drums & cymbal crash
3:34 - Move on to the beat
5:15 - The end of the drum beat so now we speed it up!
5:45 - Put it all together up until this point w/ music
6:05 - We learn how to count the 12-count rest where the drums stay silent for 12 counts
6:25 - Note: be careful of playing the wrong rhythm due to timing and hand/drumstick coordination
9:45 - Play it together w/ music
10:05 - Drum lesson closing comments

i learned that song from meytalll’s cover of it. just watch it closely and its kind of easy to learn.

if Im not doing full song break down **which I do for my weekly students** it usually takes me about 2-6 minutes.

judging by the mic quality, I assume if he hits the crash like you normally would, the audio would either cut out or just become overwhelmed

Hah! You'll get there, that's a good method of practicing. I have some tips for you on how to get the tempo up to speed. Reach out if you'd like to go over that!
Yes me too! This song’s speed kills me! Is very hard to kkep up the 16ths notes on the hihat for 3 minutes!
Are you left handed or something? Why do you play the cymbal with your left arm and snare with the right arm?
I'm a lefty! I play and teach both right and left handed.. mostly left on hi hat and right on ride, some vids I play right hand on hi hat.

What makes his drumming so weird is that it seems like he hits his ho hat really hard but also throws in all sorts of weird accents in the middle of the beat

The fill before the verse is taught wrong

teaching and performing are 2 different things :)
The fill you showed at 5:58 is wrong, its not snare+floor tom eigth notes. Its a sixteenth note diddy with a snare hit on the beat and all floor tom on the subdivisions.
