I picked up one of these to use as a gaming phone because I found it used at a decent price. (under $200) Basically got it solely for the snapdragon 835 in it and the price, but I do really like the design of the phone. Sadly it doesn't get good service with my network so it's still not my main phone.
I bought the Essential PH-1 at a great price, it has updated to Android Pie (9). I also have the 360 camera. I've yet to purchase a SIM for it and have only been using it via WiFi or my Sprint Hotspot. I like everything about this phone. I think the software upgrades have made it a winner and am patiently waiting for the Android 10 upgrade!
It's a pity that they discontinued their second phone. I really liked the PH-1 build quality. Maybe a better camera, water resistant and dual speakers would be great, but yeah it was their first phone.
They should really make a PH-2. This phone has many good attributes. Solid build, best looking and greatest to hold bar none. Great specs at launch and timely updates to keep the phone fresh. A PH-2 with updated specs, bigger screen (with smaller bottom bezel), fixed connectivity issues with some carries and the phones golden. Continue the no gimmicks, just the Essentials
I'm watching this video on my Essential PH1 running Android Q beta 3 and I have no regrets about purchasing this device back in 2017. It's still a smooth running great device in 2019 and I hope there's an Essential PH2 coming soon.
You can get a $90 mint condition essential phone on ebay (128gb, sd835 chipset), or a new one for $250 on amazon prime, with snap dragon 835 chipset it easily beats the performance of the hottest mid range Pixel 3a (sd710chipset). I'd say the Essential phone is the best for value mid range phone for 2019
I still have the Ph-1 and it still holds up and is a great device. I don't use it as much as my newer phones but Everytime I go back to it it feels special. 💪🏽

I still use it but glad i never paid full price for it. Personally i don't care that the phone is made from "premium" materials, how about companies make a phone that is easy to hold and doesn't slip out of your hand. The essential phone is terrible to hold and use without a case IMO. Also for the size it's way too heavy.
