  • New to me anyway, Muc Off rim tape so I can run tubeless tyres with sealant.
I have tried gorilla tape which works well but time consuming to remove adhesive residue if you ever remove it.
Tesa tape that works out to be cheap but didn't give me consistent results. Specialized 2bliss strips which are very easy to install & remove but works out to be the most expensive at £5 per wheel.
10 meters of this tape is apparently good for 4 29" rims and enough for 5 27.5" rims so works out to be £2.40 per rim (27.5")
This stuff was easy to install, just remember to buy the right width of tape to match your rims internal width.
And by mistake I filmed this with some weird aspect ration and 1440p. Just wanted 1080p without the borders. .

A neat trick I found in another video is to heat up a pick tool or something that fits the profile like a screw driver so that it melts through the tape to create the valve hole rather than puncturing it. That helps to avoid tearing the tape

That sounds like a good alternative. Thanks for sharing.

It should be a few millimeters wider than the internal width of your rim because of the valley it needs to be recessed down into. It's not a straight plane you are taping onto, so the internal width of a rim is just a straight line from side to side so you cannot just copy it.

Any ideas on converting non tubeless rims?

In the past I used the same method on non tubeless ready rims. The issue of non tubeless rims is the tyre won't lock into the bead so you can't run them at very low PSI, otherwise it's just a case of blocking up the spoke holes, fitting a valve and using sealant.

@@Chambers36TheEnter The wheels Mavic Crossride FTS and tyres are brand new Conti Cross Kings. They are super tight and I had to remove the standard rim strip to get them on. I take it this is a good sign?

@@mikey7278 It's just a lottery I think, some wheel and tyre combos are easy and some are hard work. I have never needed to remove rim strip to remove a tyre so to me this seems unusual but I would guess it's just tight tolerances so probably is a good sign in regards to sealing them up.
I guess the extra 0.25mm or whatever the rim strip is was causing issues.

what is special about this tape, how is it different from a generic transparent tape?

I could not tell you as I have not used the clear tape.

Ok , but that rim its not welded , you know , that opposite side of the valve hole , in this case the tape should be wider than the inner width of the rim , to be able to cover the both inner side of the rim where the tire seats ... this would be a method for non tubeless rims ...

I'm not 100% sure what you're saying. Because the rim is pinned there is a gap all the way across where air can seep out? I'm still using this wheel on my 29/27.5 hardtail and after about 2-3 weeks I loose about 10psi.

Seems to be the sealant makes a good job ... so a tubeless ready rim its always welded where the non tubeles rims are pinned

    • @Chambers36TheEnter
      @Chambers36TheEnter  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

@@lefthorse1 Oh I see now. So there's a potential to reduce how much air leaks out by using a wider piece of tape across the pin/joint area of some non tubeless rims.

You should use a few mm wider than inner diameter

@@sAmiZZle82good advice,i used 30 mm on my indi 9 27mm with great results probably helps that the bead sits on the tape and not allowing the tire to roll the tape, another good trick is to put the rim back on the bike and on the stand then hold the brake on with a small slide clamp.
