the thing i did to free myself was an artist was i got a brand new sketchbook, so that i didnt feel like i was ruining my old one, and (like a diary) i would paint 2 pieces on each side every day until i filled it, no matter how i felt and in the end it looked like a discography of emotions. i highly recommend this to people to scared to make bad art!
thanks for helping me get back in touch with the absolute insanity of being an artist, i almost had myself convinced i should be acting according to some kinda standards
1) Show up 2) trust the process (not natural, comfortable, what already know) 3) choose to be present when creating art. judging is a totally different thng and cannot multitask or quality of art will diminish/ you as artist wont be happy (art is not a life or death activity :) 4) give yourself a leap or take a shot of faith (courage -> asking someone out, ask for promotion)
the more I learn the traditional technical ways of making art, the more I enjoy just scribbling and splashing and layering chaotically ... This was very encouraging thank you
You would enjoy it more if the output was better. It’s necessary to enjoy the proces but you still need to stay true to your original goal. Otherwise you are just running away from yourself. I find that the book of 5 rings really helped out in this regard.
I like how you portrayed the real life experience of painting so well. Personally half of the time I think my painting sucks, then I get a random burst of creativity, and turn what I thought sucked into something I now love
Hell yeah exactly. That’s how iam too. I love this video and and I love Davis he’s helped me become and more understanding and more passionate artist. I Havnt made any art for a while just cause iam not working and able to find it much atm. But that no excuse and I know this. He makes me want to paint. Thank you Choe. ❤️🙏 you are the man. 🫡👊😎
Dave, I just want to say thank you. I haven't happily drawn anything in years. Expressing myself is extremely valuable, and you've taught me that when I do that in a non-judgmental way it is so much more effective. Instead of drawing for things like Instagram, or the goal to impress people, I draw to understand myself. There is a lot of very chaotic art in my sketchbook now lol, and although it doesn't follow the rules that my art classes taught me. It looks way cooler than any of the other things I've ever done. Thank you Dave, you've inspired me
BRUH!! Going to share this with my students. You make the point so well. Took me decades to learn this in clay. Now I'm immune to people's impressions of my work - because I don't care. Making the work was a journey and there's this thing left at the end. I already had my fun. If it's cool, it gets fired. Otherwise it goes in the slurry bucket. Your drawing makes so many points. Mahalo and aloha
Yea, what if. Ceramic artist here. Just finding something so refreshingly out there to take a leap of faith into my figuremaking to a different level. I know how to do clay, i know how to stick it together, how to smooth out surfaces to "Re-Create" any-body, any-mals, any-ding, but it has become flat and feeling like a chore. This has given me a new vision. OMG... im excited now. ❤❤❤❤😊🎉🦁🐓
Gotta tell you - the morning after I watched this I was in a DEEP, rural Newfoundland grade school teaching puppetry to kids - I’m blessed and get to travel around a couple times a year - anyhow, one girl was afraid to make a mark on her shadow puppet and i got her scribble drawing (her words lol) and giggling about negative thoughts. She made a beautiful salmon puppet covered in beautiful, colourful marks … really clean too! So many thanks and love from the wilds of NL ✨❤️✨
I’ve spent the last few years living this video….thank you, I feel seen after years of telling myself I didn’t care if anyone understood. Onward and upwards
needed this...yesterday I was learning about Otto Dix - and realised how scared I am to paint what i really think and feel about the world..what a brave man he was.. art does reveal who you are...and I guess im nervous to show the world im a big fat conspiracy theorist lol
Thank you for this painting lesson David. You are a master of your craft. Your paintings are as good and bad as the rest of us. In that there is no good or bad way to make art. There is only wisdom in art making. It is the only way to make art. Your way. Bless you brother 🙏 🙌 💙
David where the fuck have your been all my life, I loved your acting in beef and then discovered your art randomly and now here I am binging your youtube. Thanks dude, loving the vibe
And by simply creating this YT vdo you were able to change not only the day but maybe the life of us, the unsuspected viewers and I personally want to thank you and your team for that 😊
I want a kid-friendly version of this I can play for my 6 year old. He gets so frustrated that he can’t draw like other kids. I need him to feel this way.
David, this was the first video I watched of yours. It was the night before a 48 hour art competition. I was anxious, I was scared. Then I watched your video. The results of this event, I went in and told myself constantly; don't judge, just do. The end to this story is that I did not win the competition. But with my team, we made people laugh and people cry all at the same time sharing our fearless story. With that I just want to say. Thank you.
when i paint i start with nothing. i fight until it comes together. it looks like shit until it doesnt. i always worked in a vacuum. by myself. found my own vocabulary.
IM GONNA MAKE ART AND IM GONNA DO IT AFRAID
Erry damn day, all damn day
I really needed to read this! Thanks
LIKE EVERY OTHER LEAP OF FAITH YOU TAKE! 😉
You fucking trailblazer.
+2
Dave: "Paint like somebody else is paying for your art supplies!"
It’s like midnight Gospel and Bob Ross had an Asian baby and barf out one of the greatest artist of our time
😅😅😅
😂
Facts bro facts
Born to late to explore the world, born early to explore space but born just in time to experience David Choe
Kind of a limited mentality. You can explore places no one has ever been today if you wanted.
Whoever edits for you deserves a bonus/raise, or at least a very nice meal
This, the editing on all of these videos is so fucking sick. Thought maybe it was him??
If its the same guy on the choe show, I think its Paco Raterta
@@myk80824 thanks! Probably so, same vibe n style. And I feel like I left a similar comment few years ago
the ghost of peewees playhouse
Nah fr 😂

Great idea, love this!
suddenly i feel like crying to this
thanks for helping me get back in touch with the absolute insanity of being an artist, i almost had myself convinced i should be acting according to some kinda standards
I hate RULES MomMom Eva from NewJersey❤❤❤❤❤
This is the best advice ever on creating. It’s straight brilliance.
My art is my day and when I don’t worry about ruining it I have pretty good days
Not worrying about ruining my day is an important lesson I learned in therapy recently 💛
"Can you say the same?" Dang, that hit me.
I am in a depression, recently picked up drawing & painting. This feels like a art therapy class your voice is therapeutic. Glad I found your channel!
He just explained the artistic process so well
This is by far the greatest lesson I have ever witnessed!
Shoutout to the video editor on this one, working overtime! Bravo.
1) Show up

You're literally throwing up the negative onto paper.. in return lifting it off of yourself. This is incredible

You should do a whole series of this
I like how you portrayed the real life experience of painting so well.

this is the best and clearest creative advice I think I've ever heard. thank you

Your snarky attitude is everything 🤍 Thanks for showin us how you get past the ego
Left handed people are the master race of creativity

I think I’m gonna try to do a painting with my non dominant hand

I love your approach to making stuff - you’ve reminded me to make stuff for the sake of making it and for myself. Thanks guy!

Love that room
You’re so awesome man
I'm so happy I ran into you, dude
Great video, Dave! Even with your natural sense of humor and comedic timing you always deliver a valuable message.
I want a kid-friendly version of this I can play for my 6 year old. He gets so frustrated that he can’t draw like other kids. I need him to feel this way.
🙏🏻
You can also just teach them by reading how to books and then creating extra steps inbetween that would work for a kid that age.
Orrrr just do this exercise with him and put it in your own words. He'll appreciate it and treasure the memories more that way.
Poor kid makes you think what are the teachers and kids saying to him why does he think that
I love the editing of this, it feels fun like the content. Great job peoples
I can never tell if he is being serious or not. But he is always hilarious! 🤘
That was powerful … 😮😊. Thank you !
instant subscription damn love the edit so epic
