Civic, Golf or the neon. They are all 3 decent choices. First time I played it in 2003 i went with the civic. All cars have the same feeling so it isnt like you're missing on anything. This game is relatively in the middle with AI and its cars being faster than the other due to rubberbanding. Theres never a "slow" car or a "fast" car
The 206 gets totally overpowered in the lategame because of superior handling despite lack of topspeed. i always played 206 an Nissan 200sx (just because its the best looking tuned car).
The GameCube controller is one of the best controllers ever in my opinion. Yeah, it’s a little uncomfortable ergonomics-wise after long play sessions but it’s still very comfortable. I can easily recall this because it got to a point that lobby winners and lobbies in general filled with them and became too common in the online scene. Not to say it was the absolute fastest (i don't know, i played like a month online!) but it was very potent all the way through until endgame. I also remember the Eclipse being broken at drifting in this title specifically, for reasons i will never comprehend, i figure they just wanted to make it good at something being the original F&F car. In underground 2 they followed this up with the Corolla Trueno/AE86 being like the Miata was in this game, broken all the through the entire game, and i think the Miata still being good but I can't recall if it was as broken of a starter car as it was in NFSU

In my first Underground playthrough, I stuck to the Neon for the entire game because I didn't know you could trade your car, rather than buy a new one like in Underground 2 as you progress through the game (I played UG2 before UG).. and the Neon is a solid starter car.
you can complete the entire game with any car. except that some cars are just worse. like impreza for example, terrible top speed, terrible acceleration, atrocious handling. compare that to neon which is complete opposite
There is only one bad choice if you want to play through the whole game with one car only and that is the Honda Civic, because you can't win Drag Races in the late game with it. Every other Starter is fine. I finished the game on all of them in hard Mode.
Having played this game around 70104810 times, I can easily say the Mazda Miata is the absolute GOAT starter car. Phenomenal car. My favorite thing to do when playing this game is to play around 75% of the game with the Miata and then switch to RX-7, that car is a beast.
I played a lot of this game a long time ago and ended it with all starter cars (hard is not that harder than normal). Pegeout was the hardest by far (no speed at drags). And yeah, manual shifting is great.
When I was younger, always thought the Civic or the Miata were the best starters. I leaned towards the Golf usually though, just because I love VW. It’s very obviously the 2.0 though, not the 1.8t or VR6
the worst rubberband I've played was when I raced against 3 AE86 and their top speed was 201km/h while their average speed was 204 km/h in the race end status in underground 2.
For what it's worth the golf with full handling upgrades and no engine/speed upgrades is the ideal cheese car for the final race against the orange gtr because the golf has a higher handling ceiling and the game pegs the rival car performance to yours, lol
I built a GTI and it beat everything in this game. My friend tried to build every other starter the same way and couldn’t beat me in any of them. I became a gti fan because of that 😂
I must’ve played this game through enough times to use every car but I never used the Golf lol also me and my cousin stayed up playing until we got the Skyline unlocked. Would’ve been nice if it wasnt the last car unlocked 😂
The Neon is a great car, if you upgrade it properly. And it looks a hell of a lot better than the others, and the Civic is good and it's nice as well. But you're going to want to upgrade as soon as you can.
I completed the whole game with the 206. All races won, all on max difficulty except for a single drag race where i couldn't beat an acura. Not that I'm attached to the 206 in any way, but the game gave me no reason to change. Rubberband ai i guess
i always choose the miata. thou there is a part of the game where the 5 speed gearbox is really bad for drag races. once you get the 6 speed transmission you are good.
Thought even older GTi were turbocharged and the base golf got the 2.Slow lol. I played this and NFSU2 during my High School Years. Miss street racing games from that era. CarX Street is trying to revive that feeling
I love about how you are talking about how much better manual is at the 2:15 minute mark. Also watching this I noticed the drafting effect... This was such an awesome game and back then, there was proper effort. Even in the Arcades we had awesome racing games in the late 90's and early 2000's. I am 41, I went to an arcade recently and the racing games... OMG... They got so atrociously bad... Not only did they make them all Automatic transmission.... BUT THE LAST ONE I PLAYED THEY EVEN REMOVED THE BRAKE PEDAL. It's only a gas pedal and a Turbo button... And constant overly bright colours and shit flashing at you. Man I forgot just how damn good the graphics were for this game I played PC but jeez PS2! Insane
Here it is almost 2025 and I still own a rust free 95 dodge neon coupe that's heavily modified lol.
It’s ironic the GTI is the slowest when it’s legitimately much faster than the others in real life 😂
Thumbnail got you a new subscriber
You can complete the entire game with the 206 😂
The 206 is surprisingly an awesome car performance wise but the looks... No comment lol
@@arcticwolf8150 it can look good
Just needs facelift/ aftermarket bumpers to not be an egg
Grog tv fan found
Just gotta Gronholm it and use rally pedigree.
you can complete the entire game with any car. except that some cars are just worse. like impreza for example, terrible top speed, terrible acceleration, atrocious handling. compare that to neon which is complete opposite
I remember people succesfully racing PVP in miatas. It was one of the best cars in the game along with the skyline and the rx7
Golf GTI will always be my favorite I bought a MK4 Golf TDI because I loved driving the GTI so much in NFSU2
I always use the EM1 (Civic), but probably because I’m a Honda guy, I currently drive a blue FG2
I would always pick the focus for my starter car. And kept it. Maxed out it is one of the fastest cars in the game. It was always overlooked.
It’s very obviously the 2.0 though, not the 1.8t or VR6
the worst rubberband I've played was when I raced against 3 AE86 and their top speed was 201km/h while their average speed was 204 km/h in the race end status in underground 2.
an the gamecube, use the right trigger for your gas and left for braking (like modern games do). it works much better.
25 years later and we are still getting tips for the original need for speed 😂
How did you play so much of this game and not know you can draft behind cars in a drag and slingshot past them? It will definitely help you
The mx5 is so good. I remember racing my brother when he was using the RX7 and absolutely kicked his ass
my man is out here making content for 14 year old me. lets fucking go
I’ve beat every play thru with the GameCube version on each car starter during my teen years 😊
For what it's worth the golf with full handling upgrades and no engine/speed upgrades is the ideal cheese car for the final race against the orange gtr because the golf has a higher handling ceiling and the game pegs the rival car performance to yours, lol
Rubberband ai i guess
wow, throwing me back to high school lol
You can draft in the drags to gain more speed even if you mess up a shift
God this game is a classic the underground games were the best to this day imo
In real life,on the streets golf performs really well as a starter
Your should do the real time F1 commentary for a race. It would be hilarious!
i always choose the miata. thou there is a part of the game where the 5 speed gearbox is really bad for drag races. once you get the 6 speed transmission you are good.
That was peak NFS. Up until that point I actually liked NFS2 the best
Thought even older GTi were turbocharged and the base golf got the 2.Slow lol. I played this and NFSU2 during my High School Years. Miss street racing games from that era. CarX Street is trying to revive that feeling
Having Golf called the worst sounded like bs to me
I'm convinced you're hitting the traffic on purpose 😅
It's like saying todays kids are stupid and everyone has ADD.
Sorry about my I old people "Back in my days" rant.
Man NFS Underground appears to have aged well.
I finished it with the Tiburon.
the 206 looks sweet with some of the body kits, but its always awkward to steer, granted I was a keyboard player at the time
The golf is and was my favourite go to car. Got really chocked hearing it’s the worst in the game? Is that really true? I always thought it was very easy to handle with good traction
picked the neon because i had almost the same car irl, a 1997 Plymouth neon. just never had a chance to finish the game
I actually used the civic and after the car is fully tuned is quick specially if you learn all the turns is over .
