Just added minthara to the party, i check youtube and the update is an hour old. It is ordained!
Nice - great timing!
Fate spins along as it should.
Same. I've never had minthara or played durge so ive decided to do both and do it the proper way i.e. raided the Grove
They just keep coming!!! Keep up the incredible work dude!
Thanks!
I was looking for this video the other day, nice!
d4 Initiative rolls is probably the weirdest change Larian made from 5e. DEX was already the strongest stat. It didn't need to be made absolutely compulsory on every class!
Yeah honestly I find it hard to make a build without at least 12 dex
Yeah - I kind of like that they decided to make it less random, especially since they removed the other ways to manipulate initiative (readied actions, delayed turns) that are present or frequently houseruled in in tabletop, but d4 is just too small - it means slow characters can *never* win initiative, which I don't like. I might have gone with a d10
They have a mod that changes it to D20 i have been enjoying
True but high DEX is not a reliable source of iniative. Alert or gloomstalker are a lot more safe
I literally made a paladin build last night and followed your old video, will remake it later
I just hit level 6 on my Pally Tav - perfect time to fine tune her 😊
@@annemowdy391 Made a new character as a wizard with the 5e spells mod and can get characters to level 20, then respecced astarion as a bard and got Laezel as the Paladin, feeling really strong already as I’ve just got to level 6 as well at the crèche
Same here lol. I got Minthara last night and followed his old video to build her.
Thanks again for a great guide, gonna respec to full pally
Been waiting for this 1
Nice video !
I recommend make full use of gloves of dexterity from githyanki creche. They will give you 18 dex. Also recommend deal with hug for +1 to you strength stat.
It should look like that:
17 st.
8 dex.
14 con.
8 int.
10 wis.
16 cha.
When you obtane gloves and hug hair, it will look like this:
18 st.
18 dex.
14 con.
8 int.
10 wis.
16 cha.
Fighting style: +1 AC
Feats:
Level 4 - gwm (with advantage you should reliably hit targets with +10 damage)
Level 8 - savage attack. (Advantege on all you damage dice, including smites).
Level 12 - +2 to str.
In act 2 use potion of everlasting vigour for permanent + 2 to you str.
You will have max str., adv on attack and damage and high AC.
You can basiclly play solo at that point.
Nice! Ima use this
Great vídeo!
I just recruited her for the first time yesterday, perfect timing
It's actually criminal that recruiting Minthara is hidden behind a fringe option that isn't telegraphed to the player if you don't side with the goblins. Pretty sure there's an option to break Nere from the control of the absolute, so why not Minthara? Also Minthara makes a good point about how little sparing her makes sense without metagame context. If you spare her and tell her it's because you thought she may be a useful ally, she'll call you out because it's impossible to spare Ragzlin and Gut.
@@clarencewalters338 My headcanon is that we tried to kill her but she succeeded on her death saving throws so didn't actually die. Sure, *out of character* I was metagaming and knocking her out because I knew she'd be recruitable, but in-character, she just ended up being tougher to kill than we thought.
@@AgentNoun nah, you can provide Minthara a similar justification, something along the lines of "you just wouldn't die", and she calls out that you absolutely had the chance to finish her off
Awesome!
I use unseen menace through act 3. the invisible weapon trait also allows you to crit on 19 and 20.
Yep - great weapon for paladins!
If you don't need the extra initiative, or if you're using strength elixirs, and so don't need the ASI as much, another good feat to take at level 4 to really boost your damage, if you can get higher attack rolls (e.g. from bless), advantage, etc, would be Great Weapon Master.
would love to see a dual wielding build in the future. I know you've done the paladin dual wielding setup but it'd be neat to see a non-paladin version!
I'm currently playing 4 thief 8 champion crit build. Stats 17 dex, 16 con, 15 cha. Feats Actor, Dual Wielder, Savage Attacker and ASI Dex. Get +1 dex from Auntie. Background Human Urchin. Skills Persuasion, Intimidation, Perception Insight.
It's not the strongest thing out there, but it's extremely versatile. Great at conversation, good damage, can lockpick. If you get downed and then healed, you get 2 bonus actions to attack with.
If I may suggest some I feel like running a 8 fighter 4 rogue would be nice dual wielder. Two weapon fighting, 4 feats, and two bonus actions for off hand attack sounds solid. Can grab dual wielder and 2 ASIs and still have an extra feat leftover for whatever you wish.
Could also go 6 shadow monk, 3 gloomstalker 3 assassin and dual wield shortswords. Not take the feat instead opting for a single ASI at 4 just to get 20 dex (with hag hair bonus) or savage attacker (skip ASI and just use hag hair+graceful cloth for 20 dex by ~lvl6). Harder to play if you’re not careful but absolutely clears rooms with ease all by yourself.
The most simple option is 12 fighter and just having dual wielder+2 ASI+extra feat. Get three base attacks off one action and all other fighter goodies.
I've done a few! Check out my dagger rogue build
@@Cephalopocalypse I'll have to check it out I wasn't aware you did one! I appreciate your communication in the comments, it's always nice to see
When I played pure paladin, I used Luminous armor with Gloves and Boots of Reverberation until I got to act 3 and started to want to wear some fancy items. Boy it was fun to inflict 4 stack of reverb on hit, then 4 stacks of reverb on smite (need to add flat elemental damage from listed on gloves for it to work this way), just the sound of that as well as knocking enemy prone with a single attack was so satisfying.
I'm doing the same plus using the hammer that does radiant damage so even normal attacks add stacks
Been needing a pally build for my orc since racial traits only benefit melee and he’s my face
Rip
These videos are coming in clutch
The illithid power Luck of the Far Realms is also nice. With the increases to hit chance you'll be seeking, the ability to turn a successful attack roll into a critical hit on command (once per long rest) is insanely powerful for Paladins.
In addition the prerequisite power Favorable Beginnings adds your proficiency bonus to your first attack roll or ability check against a target. Useful for attacking and getting OHKOs obviously but also nice since your Paladin will likely be the party face and the extra 1/2/3/4 points for Persuasion or other ability checks helps.
I also find Half orc to be particularly great with Paladins as if they use hold person or someone else in your party uses hold person having that extra crit dice is awesome bonus damage
If only that one hireling was a full companion
So if doing a lockadin in honour mode. Would you adjust the level split since the pact weapon extra attack doesnt stack with extra attack from paladin?
I would say you you have more flexibility. You still want atleast 3 in warlock (to get pact of blade) and 6 in paladin (aura of protection). With that I’d say there’s three good ways to go: warlock 6 + paladin 6 for warlock subclass feature and better warlock spells, warlock 4 + paladin 8 for three feats or warlock 3 + 9 paladin for juicy smites and more paladin spells. If you are going oath of ancient or oathbreaker there is also value in doing warlock 5 and paladin 7.
Duuuude lets gooo i just reloaded the feed 😎
HELL YEAH

17:00 I just want to say: I'm in my second playthrough, and I decided to play a Paladin with Durge background. This so called bug is what sold the whole idea to me: as a "resisting urge" Durge, and as a Paladin, the whole idea of "I'm my own worst enemy" idea is *VERY* flavorful, roleplaying wise!
And I *even* get to put together that one alongside Shadowheart's Bless, and therefore literally crush encounters, so... Win win!
You mentioned about emotional impact when you break your oath as a paladin once rather than misclick, and i almost forgot about when Dame Aylin break her oath when i fought lorroakan today. I wish it felt like that for our main character too.
Yeah, exactly!
Half orc is an incredibly optimal choice for Paladin because savage attacks applies not only to weapon damage but also smites. An OoV paladin with a Glaive or great axe and GWM, rerolling weapon and smite dice with GWF will do insane amounts of damage on every crit
Speaking of Gith swords, another crazy good one (especially if you can get it in Act One) would be the Silver Sword of the Astral Plane. Combine that with either a Gith, or use disguise self however you can, and yeah. One of the best weapons you can get that will most likely carry you for the rest of the game on your striker paladin.
Another amazing weapon for AoE striking would be Jorgoral's Greatsword, because of the Colossal Onslaught weapon action it gives you to use once per short rest (likely once per battle, given how rest dependent that Paladins are).
God damn it now I have to start a new playthough ! Haha 😂
The daylight tactic for Cazador was patched. Unless you enter combat, he just keeps healing
got a general question. I killed the oathbreaker npc on honor mode in camp (he went hostile when i had astarion bite a hired npc). Now my main cant restore his oath and so cant respec....... if i turn another charactewr into a paladin and make it break its oath will the npc oathbreaker return for that character?
Note, while advantage does effectively double your chance to crit, it is only approximately 10% (really something like 9.75%) vrs the base 5%. So not super great, but any increase is awesome.
Yeah, it can always get a little misleading when talking about relative vs. absolute increases in probability
@Cephalopocalypse I mean to be fair, I went and double check all the math myself. So yeah, double is close enough, lol.
Hi! Can you suggest some variants for short-rest party?
bro that purple armor looks so damn good, what dye is that?
I would argue that Great weapon fighting is redundant with Savage Attacker, might as well pick defence.
Your argument would be weak. They are quite literally the opposite of redundant; they are synergistic effects that compliment one another to increase damage rolls beyond what either would alone.
Yeah it works well if you aren’t using great weapons I use it because I use dueling
Was trying to find your video about the sorcadin and couldn’t find it in your listed videos :(
9:50 Adding to this, while I do love my Oath of Ancients Pallies, I find that that oath in particular is kind of a pain in the ass to keep, as if you take a certain deal for a certain perma stat increase item in mid/late Act 1, that will count as breaking your oath...something I had to learn the hard way. >.
I had an idea for a paladin, maybe you can check it out if it’s viable…
Oath of ancients(11) War domain cleric (1) with healing gear item with warden of vitality and protection fightingstyle.
Feats= alert and sentinel
Action=attack
Bonus Action=healing or warpriest attack
Reaction=protection or sentinel attack
you should try it out yourself and see if its viable or not though. I tried swords bard, it was good but not amazing. Dunno whats the fuss about Flourishing Smite. Its good don't get me wrong, but swords bard loses a feat and you can't take alert from it without losing an ASI. Feels god awful imo. I have to compensate by having alot of initiative increase items and have alot of dex(gloves of dex). Command approach high spell cast isn't nearly as useful as just casting Hold person/monster and demolishing them with triple crit from GWM for me. High spell slots is nice, but guarantee crit on Paladin is way more important imo. Especailly when Minthara can easily be tadpoled(she wants them by default, just needs to talk to her so she gets free fly, the best class to use this btw and it makes sense immersion wise) along with your tav/durge, she is easily the second best dps in the game(next to laezel cause she is a githiyanki and can get access to the best sword in the game, the gith silver sword) if we are not counting or OP tav/durge with Tadpoles. My fire sorc + Minthara just deletes every encounter of the game, even vs fire immune character cause i just use heightened spell Hold monster with Fire sorc(they get insane arcane arcunity and i stack a shit ton of charisma on them so its almost always a 100% chance to land). Adding that with Lae zel mono Fighter (so many feats with mono fighter and 6 attack in 1 round is just ridiculous) and shadowheart(Any support cleric will do, i have been trying out light cleric but i think life is just always better besides vs Myrkul), no bosses survive turn 1 vs my party as long as i am playing properly. Its my personal best party, extremely flexible with everyone being literally unkillalbe with 20+ AC and proficiency in everything besides fucking lock picking(which i occasionally bring my Astarion out for it with Rouge Ranger multiclass classic) or i just use knock if i couldn't be bother with(Fire sorc doesn't need that many spell besides ray of fire, fire ball, haste, counter spell and hold monster person)
@@tranducquang5912 currently playing it on tactical not skilled enough for honour mode i’m afraid
If you by accident break your oath, isn't it cheaper to just "reroll" class to get it back?
Also how do you manage not to break the vengeance oath?
turns out you can't, you break it you are screwed
Is this paladin version better than the oath breaker from many months ago? (seven in fact, the one where it branches off to sorcerer) i am on my tactician playthrough rn on ps5 (chasing that platinum trophy)
So does lv 11 paladin add 1d8 radiant to every melee attack not just smite? Wow that's neat
Curious what changes and tweaks you would make to the build if you chose to go sword and board instead of 2 hander. Savage attacker would have to go. Maybe Dex build then with a rapier?
its just a worse build cause 2 handed weapons are OP in this game, especially with Hold monster/Person. I only play duel wield to stack crit on archer builds and not having to attack with it at all lol. Feels like one handed weapon/rapier are only good on Warlock if you actually plan to attack with it and not just use something else
If I'm not using Paladin for dialogue (main is Warlock), can I forgo Charisma or should I keep it?
Is this one stronger or the lockadin one?
Yo would you do a low-powered Bard build or something of the sort. I don't see anything for valor on TH-cam. Everything is just the overpowered meta Bard.
link to the cover image of this video? can't find it such high-quality! love your videos
Artstation magazine has an article with a ton of the bg3 splash art, cover art, and renders - almost all my thumbnail images are pulled from that!
@@Cephalopocalypse ty!!
How would optimise for a oath breaker paladin ?
Pretty new to the game, is a Zariel Tiefling with the two extra smite types worth considering?
Can you make a radiating orb build but not based around Cleric/Spirit Guardians?
you can with paladin but late game its better to build around other things
Like the vids just bump the audio up about 2db
What about Str 16, Dex 12, Con 14, 8, 8, CHA 16 build? I get that initiative is important but it's only difference of 1. And with extra 2 CHA you'll get stronger Auras, and Channel Oath abilities. Not to mention, bigger CHA - better skillchecks.
I think the gloves of Dex are better if you want natural strength so you can bump up con and wisdom
The challenge is with the d4 initiative rolls in BG3, 1 initiative is enormous, especially in the early game. Especially because so many enemies are goblins, who have high dex, the difference between +2 and +1 initiative is going first half the time vs going first 1/4 of the time, which can be really dangerous.
@@Cephalopocalypse You are right from the math viewpoint, but consider that there is only one fight with the goblins that is scripted and can't be initiated on your terms. Battle at the Grove gates. Everything else you can either talk you way out of, or strike first and get a surprise round. And if got a surprise round battle is already won. I'd say that initiative is huge in Act 2-3 with a large amounts of mini-bosses and elite enemies where, you you will not go first, your party will get obliterated. But goblins are not a huge threat, even on Honour mode.
4:48 One more reason I have zero shame in using that Daily Strength Elixir exploit for my paladins; even moreso than for my other strength dependent characters.
Please Cephalo, would you make an illithid powers tierlist?😢
I'm curious about his thoughts here as well. I tend to only care about Shield of Thralls, Luck of the Far Realms, and Cull the Weak. I wonder if I'm missing anything good.
@@annemowdy391ability drain is really good, and anything with the awakened buff is 10x better.
I’d say top 5 are
Black hole
Favorable beginnings
LotFR
Ability drain
Cull the weak
@@kingofgrim4761 illthid persuasion is SSS tier too cause if you stack it with a Charisma based character you can get up to -200% discount on merchant(24 charisma needed). Also you are forgetting the best Illthid power in the game, mind sanctuary. Its way better than haste and it can be paired with haste. Good for literally every build in the game AND you can combo it with Globe of invulnerability. In fact its so strong i seldomly use it cause it makes fights way too easy. Especially if you have 2 of them(Play with Minthara guys, she will become partial illthid with you, making you 2 the best dps in the entire game and its not gonna be even close, she also comes with some tadpoles already and she doesn't need any checks to do it, just ask her)
@@tranducquang5912 mind sanctuary is very good, however I don’t understand how the haste interaction works with it. Like, everytime I’ve used MS with Haste/Speed potion they IMMEDIATELY become lethargic, regardless of concentration or turns remaining
@@tranducquang5912 also, the discounts on the merchant is really almost worthless lol. You can already have basically maxed out discounts on figaro, and gold is more than plentiful especially by act 3. (Also thought discount can only go so low, bc with figaro the prices don’t change whether it’s my worst or best charisma character (after saving him)
Can u do padlock or lockdin
What was the name of the build for paladin/ sorcerer build? I want a charisma based melee build. For a main character.
I'm guessing it's his previous Best Paladin video, which suggests a 9/3 Pal/Sorc split
Finally I bought the game. I'm thinking about choosing a single class for the first playthrough. Most people prefer the paladin. I just don't like being like everyone else! Please tell me, is there a single subclass of a ranger or cleric that is as strong or stronger than a paladin? Or will any cleric, ranger, or fighter lose to a paladin? Is the Battle Master and Dread Knight more boring than the Paladin?
I would say Gloomstalker is the obvious Ranger choice, probably War or Tempest Cleric.
Weapon based Shadow Monks are also awesome
@@raff_spriggles_tfn5910 thank you
I hate how rest dependent Paladin is. And it always feels like optimization with a Paladin is damn near impossible because you give up so much just trying to balance around your stats. Personally Lockadin is the only one that feels fun to play for me cause of SR recharging smites, eldritch blast being a reliable ranged option and the SADness when CHA is the only thing you’re worried about. Even then you give up a feat which is so crucial for the class… it’s just such a headache for people who like the feeling of being complete. I love the theme of the class but I don’t have fun relying on elixirs just to be complete.
That said I think the most fun Paladin I ever built was a 7/5 Lockadin OathBreaker/GoO using strength elixirs, boots of striding (so I never lose concentration) and gloves of growling underdog. I hated having to farm and cheese elixirs but it felt like the only way to play pally for me without having to stretch myself too thin.
Any chance of a pure Oath of Ancients Paladin build?
100% chance! You can find it under "the safest character in bg3" :D
@@Cephalopocalypse w00t! Thanks, Ceph!
This build is garbage. How exactly am I supposed to get true strike?
Very true, better start over
"Vow of enmity is bugged, and you can cast it on yourself..."
That's not a bug, it's a feature, you understand? A feature. Don't alert Larian or else they'll get rid of it.
Given how many popular exploits have been patched and how long this one has been around, I doubt they're touching it
dont smites break concentration?
Only the bad smites
Some of the smite spells require concentration (as do zariel tiefling's racial smites) but thunderous smite and actual paladin smites don't
I think it’s important for new players to know that STR elixirs can be a Trap Option. There are so many great elixirs in the game! But having one replace your entire stat permanently locks you out from using them to their full potential.
why is there no good written guides that detail each level? these videos contain too much blathering
2 lvls paladin : 10 lvls sword bard.
How can you even try to call this trash the best paladin build?
Because this is a Paladin build, not a Paladin + Swords Bard Build
Agree with 2/10bard, but he said "single class" right at the start.......
Why you so worked up about the fact that the Paladin build video is about Paladins and not Bards??? If this was a video about 10 lvls of Bard with 2 lvls of Paladin then it would literally be Bard video
Because a smite bard is literally a bard with divine smites not really a “paladin” build
@@tunarulesatcaFalse it’s strong it’s just stronger options pure oathbreaker with maxed charisma is strong
