Is This $37 John Deere Toy Train Set Any Good?

  • I found a Lionel "Ready To Play" train set on Amazon.com for only $37 and couldn't resist buying it... just to see if it was worth the price or not.
    When I opened the box and set it up, there were two major surprises:
    Even though it was made by Lionel, it was neither O gauge or HO... the two most common model train sizes made by Lionel.
    And...
    It was actually a fun toy, not a piece of junk... totally worth the $37. If you have a 3-6 year old in your family who likes trains or John Deere tractors, this is a product you should probably buy!
    You can order one from Amazon at amzn.to/3o6NjDB
    Sure, this is nowhere near the quality you would get in a HO or O scale model train set... but one of those could easily cost you hundreds of dollars. This little model train set is a real bargain for the price!
    Speaking of HO model trains...
    If you'd like to see some videos of an extensive HO layout with realistic scenery and buildings... check out the TH-cam channel of my old friend from my college days, Paul Patterson. His channel is at / @paulpatterson9559

    If this set was available 10-12 years ago, I would've asked to get it. As a kid, I liked the John Deere model trains that TM Books and Video featured in their videos about John Deere machinery.

    I bought the Christmas Train version of this for my 2 year old and it's fantastic for what we paid and what we use it for.
    We run it every 2-3 Sundays for part of the day and it's quick and easy to set up and tear down so it's no big deal to run it for half a day whenever you feel like it.

      @@owendinostudios1200 No, definitely not. This is quite a bit smaller than the Lionel Polar Express. If you happen to own the Lionel Polar Express, go ahead and put a ruler behind the locomotive like I did to the one in the video. The one in the video was about 2.5 inches tall. The Lionel Polar Express is quite a bit taller and larger.

  • @Petemonster62
    @Petemonster62 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    The train might be a 3/16 of an inch = 1 foot scale (S scale) that runs on an O gauge track. American Flyer made such trains right before World War II & Marx made some trains like that in the 1950s. Jim could take his ruler & measure the gauge of his track to see if it is 7/8 of an inch wide (S gauge) or 1 & 1/4 inch wide (O gauge). A John Deere dealer (or enthusiast) could make a Christmas tree layout using this train with Ertl 1/64 scale models of farm equipment & farm buildings. Many Matchbox & Hot Wheels cars are close to 1/64 scale & old Bachmann " Plasticville " buildings could be found at train shows. One thing nice nowadays is that rechargeable batteries are readily available!

    I've bought an American Bachmann HO scale Train Set, The Chatanooge, and an American Railroad Sound CD from ebay. The train set consists of a steam engine, 3 Box/Freight Cars and a Caboose. Earlier than that, I received a Kadee coupling, which is now fitted to Foreign Tank Engine Molly, and her two new Disneyland carriages have arrived. The train set cost under $100 in American Currency and just over £100 in British Currency. I've heard that Amazon is good to buy from, but I prefer ebay, because you always get everything in the box to make a complete train set. Buy from ebay, you get better quality deals.

I was suprised when I found out about this John Deere train set from this vid, and I think it might be the perfect match for it, and i hope to get it and the Northern Star soon, thanks for making this and informing me about it.

    As an European, i have few questions about caboose.
    1.What is it
    2.What is its purpose
    3.Why i have never encountered any of them in my country (Poland)

    • @JimZim
      @JimZim  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      A caboose is a rail car for the train crew at the very end of the train. Inside are a few seats where crew members can sit, as well as storage for a few tools, and usually a stove in case the weather is cold and the caboose needs to be heated.
      It is designed in such a way that there is usually a place up high where a crew member can sit and have a view of the top of the train. Also, there are usually places on either side of the caboose that have an angled view forward so that they can see what's ahead and alongside the train.
      The real purpose of the caboose has to do with the switches along the track. In the old days, switches were not automated. If a train came up to a switch in the tracks and needed to switch the switch in the other direction before proceeding, such as to go off on to a siding, the train would stop just short of the switch and a crew member would climb down from the locomotive (at the front of the train) and switch the switch. Then the train would proceed. The guy who got out and switched the switch would either climb back in the locomotive, or stay with the switch until the train passed.
      If he got back in to the locomotive, someone from the caboose would wait until the caboose reached the switch, and then he would get out, switch the switch back to the other orientation, and then climb back up in to the caboose.
      If the crew member from the locomotive just stayed with the switch the entire time as the train made its way past the switch, he would put the switch back to its normal orientation after the train passed by, and then he would climb up in to the caboose before the train departed.

    • @logsaplenty
      @logsaplenty 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      A caboose, to my knowledge, was a car located on the back of long-distance freight trains where the brakeman and extraneous crew would travel. It generally had a berth for sleeping, hence the bulge at the top of the car, a stove and a bench. If memory serves, it's also where the brakes that would generally be on a brake van in the uk are located. They've pretty much fallen out of use at this point, possibly due to larger diesel engines having existing sleeping quarters? I'm really not sure if the larger haulers have any extra space, but that's what I would assume.

    • @Petemonster62
      @Petemonster62 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      A caboose is a car for train crew to ride (typically a rear brakeman) in & an office for the freight train conductor. It was typically at the end of the train; sometimes a second caboose was placed behind the locomotive for the front -end brakeman (There was a train like that in the 1950s movie " Carmen Jones " staring Harry Belafonte & Dorothy Dandridge). The British railroads had a similar car on their " goods " trains known as a " brake van ". I have seen some European county's railways had box cars with an elevated shed on one end that would serve that function - I think the Czeck company ETS offered O scale models of those boxcars. Originally, a caboose was basically a box car with windows & doors. A freight train conductor on the Chicago & Northwestern Railroad, Tom Watson, had an accident which caused a big hole in the roof of his caboose. He climbed up through the hole to inspect the roof while the train was running its route & noted how well he could view the train in operation. He talked to the car shop foreman about his idea & they came up with the idea of the caboose cupola. In the mid 1900s when American railroads started using taller freight cars - like the " Hi - Cube Boxcar ", those cars blocked the view from the cupola & some railroads started used bay windows on the side of the caboose, instead of a cupola on top.

    Not sure if you're familiar with S Gauge (1:64 scale), but this particular train set looks more in scale with that, although I'm sure the track width is wider. American Flyer was really the only company who made trains in that scale, although American Models (no relation) manufactures S Gauge equipment to this day up in Michigan. I've looked at some S Gauge trains on my channel, although I have never done a designated video. I too will admit that when compared to other Lionel Ready-to-Play sets, this one appears to be value for money. Now you just need an actual G scale John Deere set.

    This is the S scale Lionel John Deere battery operated toy train set.
    One of the main reasons why you, Jim Zim, had just recently moved from California to Washington is to be closer to your sister, her husband, and their family. And they have a ton of John Deere farm equipment on their huge farm.
    So when you saw a John Deere train set, you probably had to have one.
    And earlier this year, you reviewed that little train set by Lionel you had bought at Amazon.com.
    Your first clue is that the John Deere battery operated toy train set by Lionel is not G scale, HO scale or O scale is how small the box is.
    The John Deere battery operated toy train set by Lionel comes with a diesel locomotive, three rail cars and tracks that will make the largest oval layout in the world of model trains.
    You compare the Lionel John Deere diesel locomotive with a caboose in HO scale and we see the John Deere diesel locomotive from Lionel is bigger than HO scale but it is smaller than O scale. And so the Lionel John Deere battery operated toy train set that does NOT come with a remote control is S scale.

      The S scale Lionel John Deere battery operated toy train set that does NOT come with a remote control going around the sink of the kitchen island gives me an idea.
      Why don't you run one of your G scale model trains around the sink of the kitchen island?
      That would be interesting to me, but my advice to you is turn the controls all the way down and run them very slowly and steadily, and if you turn the controls all the way up, and then they will most likely to fall off and damage themselves really bad, unless you have pillows to make a soft spot to cushion their fall.
      Let me know when you reply to me and I'll understand.

      John Deere makes farm and construction equipment.
      Amtrak celebrates its 50th anniversary in 2021, since its first operations in 1971.

    First of all, let me say how much my great nephew and I love watching your videos! His name is Christopher and he has been in love with trains most of his 8 years. His most favorite is the White Pass diesel. I've been looking for one for him for years, but can't seem to find one anywhere. I don't mean the G scale like you have, something more ave appropriate. Do you have any suggestions for me? I would be so geateful. I just say I also love your cruise videos, too!😊

      Please say hello to Christopher for me!
      The diesel version of the White Pass Railway is very hard to come by. But if you'd settle for a steam version, take a look at this reasonably-priced set:
