That's mind-blowingly awesome. Very well described too. The ads were a bit heavy handed though, but that's the times we live in, init? Fantastic video mate.
I hope that the mega65 finds a good audience. there are several “super” retro platforms in development and I have a hard time deciding whether I like them or not. After a certain point you have to ask the question “why?”. The Mega65 has the benefit of implementing specifications that were created along time ago. That adds a lot of legitimacy. (Except for the 40 MHz processor which I just find ridiculous). but if we’re going to go this far, why not just put a keyboard on a Mega Drive? or at what point do we admit this is basically the same as an Amiga?
I think the appeal for C64 developers that want to do something retro, but beyond what the C64 is capable of, is that you don't have to learn a new language, whether that's 68000 for the Amiga or Z80 for the Next. Try doing what Shallan demonstrates in this video on an Amiga, it'll take you a lifetime to get near. For the M65 it's just a few lines of code. This is essentially a Commodore version of the Next, and that seems to have done quite well. I think the answer to the question 'why?' is 'why not?'. I have a feeling these guys would be making the Mega65 in some shape or form whether anyone was interested or not. I was highly sceptical they'd reach their funding goal for the moulds, and let's be honest they were nowhere near until a benefactor chucked in 40K, but I admire their ambition and determination to get this done.
Just stop. "Software sprites" and "soft sprites" are oxymorons. A sprite is a hardware construct. Just because most people are imbeciles and wannabe's and try to pretend their systems have sprites, is no reason to capitulate to their bastardization of terminology. 1:30 FFS, you may was well say that BOBs are sprites (they're not). Words have meaning. Fight the slide into meaningless gibberish by not accepting their redefinition.
@@Shallan64 It's not correct. If you want to explain, or communicate, use the most accurate terminology. Avoid reinforcing mistaken ideas. With such sloppy language, what's the difference between a Sprite, a BOB, and an old Apple shape table? Nothing! Hardware matters. It's why the C64 was better than the Apple II, and why the Amiga was better than the ST. Hardware resources are the limit on what a machine can do. But you have softees who have no engineering experience screwing up the terminology. We shouldn't be helping them do that. We should be clarifying.

'Just stop' and 'Most people are imbeciles' ?? What bad smoke did you use ? In what kind of trip are you caught ? Just a good explanation from mr Shallan.
This is the best video on Mega65 capabilities made so far! Thank you Shallan.
Great explanation! I didn't know that the MEGA65 had this feature. Still waiting until my machine is delivered to be able to play around with it.

Fantastic video mate.
Ah thanks for the pointer, I usually turn off mid-roll ads but I had forgotten this time.
Great video and very well explained. Thank you !!! and i am looking forward to more topics.
Great video - I really like the format and approach.
Glad you enjoyed it! More to come :)
Perfect explanation. I would like to see more even in the beginning of Mega65
This is great, thanks for sharing! Is RRB an MEGA65 feature, or would the C65 alo be equiped with it?
It's a VIC4 specific, and therefore Mega65 specific feature

I bet you're a barrel of fun at parties! They are commonly referred to as soft sprites whether you think that is correct or not.
