Shania Twain always rubbed Nashville the wrong way. She and Garth Brooks turned what was proper country music on its head. These two artist made a metal head like myself listen to country for a good four to five years. We all know how hot she is but I think that the way she fought against the Nashville aesthetic(meaning too or not)made her even sexier.

This makes me respect the song even more. For me, it was just always fun. I typically stay far away from any kind of country music, country music is usually my personal bagpipes, but something about Shania always connected with me. It was definitely more of the pop-rock feel to this song that made it feel more warm and inviting. It feels like a bar song. A song that kicks ass. A song to play at full blast in the car with the top folded down, letting your hair whip in the wind, and just go for the ride. Starting the song with that delicious guitar riff was one of the best choices anyone could've made. It's a catchy, super fun jam.
And I think what makes it so universal and what makes it resonate is that it's Shania not afraid to be herself. It's about proudly being yourself and however, whoever you are. That's more of the core of what the song is. So I'm not surprised even a lot of guys are not ashamed to love this song. It's more an anthem over embracing life as who you are and not what you're supposed to be. So I believe outside the awesome music of it is what makes this special song endure so much.
It's a song most people, whoever they may be, are not afraid to get down and dance and sing at the top of their lungs for. Funny enough, despite the country music industry being so averse and "scared" of it at the time, it's one of the biggest and most well known and love country jams everyone just knows. Country claimed it pretty quick once it took off. Even somewhere out in the fields away from the hustle and bustle of a metropolitan city, a farmer doing his rounds on the tractor is jamming hardcore to this.
It defies labels and yet, it has become one of the biggest and greatest country tracks ever put out. It's a song if nothing else, it makes you bubbly and happy. I can almost guarantee no one leaves singing that song in a bad mood. It's a song about being happy over how beautiful you are just for being you. And hopefully it is a classic that will always be timeless and just as good as when you first discovered it.

You have to admire the fact that so many "revolutionaries" came together to make this happen, nearly tailored to Shania Twain.

And not only did it pay off but it resulted in something that is WAY MORE ICONIC than anybody thinks.

I was in my teens when this song was released, I didn't understand quite well the lyrics back then because English is not my native language and I'm self-taught, but I loved the video! The female version of the "Addicted to Love" video, as a girl I was totally in. Knowing Shania's backstory makes it much easier to understand it. For my friends and I, our fun song to go out and have fun on a Friday night after work was Cyndi Lauper's "Girls Just Want to Have Fun", so I understand that for a newer generation this was their fun song to go.

I was living in Chicago back when the Come on Over album came out. Her song Man! I Feel Like a Woman got a lot of air play on the radio. One time after this was played a male DJ announced the song and said, "You have to be comfortable in your own manhood to be able to say those words".
Read Shania's memoir "From this Moment On" when it was published in 2011. She's a strong country woman and I admire her for this.

@@robertprice4826 shania's absence was completely understandable. I do agree that the music business is cut throat, ESPECIALLY to women. So unfair. I do believe that given that young people are looking back (as all generations do) i hope that shania is seen. And thats what i mean by renaissance. Maybe rediscovered is the better word.
To be fair to your statement, Taylor Swift was/is undeniable in terms of her talent. While Shania helped to open the door and helped Nashville to see an artist like Taylor who was just a teen at the time. That being said: Taylor is a profoundly talented artist in her own right and I dont like to "play them" off one another.

I haven't heard this song in a long time, but I think I needed to be reminded of it and the message behind it. Like Cyndi's classic about girlhood, this song is an extension of that playful joy that comes with expressing your womanhood, whatever that means to you. The fact that it came from this great place of embracing her feminine side, well that's why it speaks to people. The best songs, like the best poems, paintings and dances, come from a real, lived experience.
