  • This is a look at a 1:72nd scale Viper MkVII model kit.
Now out of production these model kits are terrifically fun.

Happy that I snatched all these up during the first run. Such a shame they're off the market today.

Love these! Brings back great memories of the shows. I think my favourite will always be the original viper from the original show.

I really like the idea of highlighting the show’s production time context by making one version in a 1970s tan and orange while the other being in a 2000s grey and red. It’s a subtle difference at first glance but goes a long way! Really good.

they were always supposed to be Red, but red bleeds on NTSC televisions, especially in 1978. That's also why the TNG Blu-ray is the first time the uniforms aren't maroon. this is also why all these Star Trek model kits tell you to slap blue all over them, something that is never shown on screen, ever. It's so they photograph correctly, but you're not building a model of the model, otherwise you would include motion control points the kits should always include painting instructions for an on screen look.
Ron Moore like Alex Kurtzman had executives that didn't give a crap as long as they made money, so they made whatever they wanted and slapped the proper nouns on it even if it was the antithesis of the source material. People should think a lot harder about what they support and what they buy merchandise for
JJ Abrams allegedly tried to kill classic Trek merchandise because it doesn't make him his fat royalty and no one was buying his crap. That's right, he gets a royalty on everything he changes and you wonder now why he's ruining it? Same went for Ron Moore.

Moebius held a license from Universal to make the battlestar galactica models. When Universal was exploring a reboot of the series, they raised the cost of the license to price that made the cost of models prohibitive. About this time, the owner decided to sell the brand to Pegasus models. Mobeius (under new owners) still makes models. Most notably, the 2001 kits.
Modeius still has the molds, so hopefully, Universal will become more reasonable with their license, and we can see these kits again.

Would be interesting to see a Thunderbirds or Blue Angels version. Enclosing the battery and switch like that is genius. Thanks for the idea

Moebius is owned by Pegasus Hobbies. They have the molds. They still release new kits, such as Ford pickup trucks and 2001 kits etc. Like you mention it's a licensing thing why they don't release the kits now fro BSG. The owner of Moebius lives here in Florida, I've met him many times. He once told me - For years they wanted to make a kit of the spaceship from Planet of the Apes but could never get the licensing. The studios just never felt anyone would buy a model from such an old movie. Moebius tried - and I'm sure they tried on many other subjects as well but you never know with studios. I built the 1/32 classic Viper and the Cylon Raider - both were very good kits. I used lighting on the Cylon one. 🙂

How about building this kit up as some kind of battle diorama with this one being damaged and chipped and in flames? That would certainly benefit from the internal space for lighting and batteries.

Looks like you need a 3D-printed Mk. 3 to go with them.

It was a late night when I made that, and I can't actually read the text as Type it for that screen, but I bet I can fix it for you.
