Arguably one of the most phenomenal live recordings of any opera in the post 1950s era. And Leyla was - IMHO - the most unjustly under-rated artist of that period.
She was a goddess even back then ....but if we were to be so blessed to have her among the crop of sopranos we have today ...Leyla would need to be carried around on a pedestal!
RIP, dear Leyla! Please know that with every new generation - thanks to these recordings, your legion of fans only grows!!

Agreed 120%. Listen to Ah Dolce Guidami (cavatina near end of Anna Bolena). It's the most gorgeous signing I have ever heard, and I have heard MUCH in my 72 years. Pianissimi and floated notes like no one.

Gencer has to be one of most sadly neglected greats of the opera world EVER! Her voice and that of Callas were the most distinctive in the world while they were active. She could sing almost any score with artistry that was amazing!

And Leyla had an especially beautiful legato phrasing and high pianissimo notes that Callas, as great and unique as she was, just couldn't equal. Gencer definitely deserves to be held in the same esteem as other female singing greats of the bel canto revival such as Callas, Caballe, Sutherland and Sills.

Gencer's voice was not a voice of singing perfection, but it was a dramatic voice like no other. And this she did brilliantly. She was a theater voice, a stage voice. Perhaps for this reason there are no studio recordings.

Reportedly, there was some tension between Gencer and the conductor Francesco Molinari-Pradelli because of that final 'No!' before 'Figlia impura di Bolena'. Gencer wanted to sing it before the orchestra stopped (like she did here) and Molinari-Pradelli didn't like it. Rehearsals were cancelled, both were mad at each other and it took some effort to bring them back. Maybe this rapid pace is a result of that friction.
Nonetheless, this is one of the most precious moments in the history of recorded opera. Who wouldn't want to be in Teatro Comunale that night?

Read a review of this production saying how amazing Gencer was because she seemed able to sing any role! Why wasn’t she more recorded ? She didn’t need high notes alone to form a character . Verret was a great singer when she sang in her range! Alas she ruined her beautiful voice far too early! But this was sensational on all counts. Wish the whole thing were available if only for Gencer’s high note which comes out unbelievable!

Gencer was a great soprano trapped between Callas and Sutherland. She could sing almost anything and could act quite well but those two other huge personas left little room for her. I saw her perform "Alceste" at the Rome and was stunned by her perfect understanding of the classical [i.e., Gluck] style and how to infuse it with great drama while preserving the line of the music.
