As for the Taylor Lewan injury, that is a 315lb (~143kg) man diving headfirst at good speed. His was more a knockout from spinal compression temporarily cutting off blood flow to his brain than from concussive force. His trainer said he was snoring on the field.
It also looked like he took another good hit to the back of his head on landing too

I'd rather hear what Mike has to say anyway. I find that nearly any time Dave voices his opinion, Daz will take an opposing perspective. Daz strikes me as the type of guy who always has to be right. He's done everything - higher, faster, more times than anyone else at the party. However, I enjoy watching Daz react to comedians.

Not usually. They have to get a 3rd party concussion check first before they are cleared to come back.
Every player lives the pressure of “next man up.” No player is guaranteed their spot to be held in the event of a serious injury. I believe they all sign a contract with an exclusion for loss of playing time. Less than 1% of college grads make it to the pros. The NBA drafts 2.2%. Over 1 million high school students play football and only 73k get chosen for Division 1 colleges.

As others have pointed out, a lot of these are spinal compression or 'stingers'. Having had a couple pretty rough ones in my day, not only does it daze you but it leaves your whole body either tingly or numb, (Which is why they are still moving, but can't get up.) along with intense pain in the compressed area. While very dangerous to ever compress the spine to that degree, most of these are a 100% recovery. It's when they aren't moving at all that it gets scary. You have to wonder if they are just knocked out, or possibly have a broken neck.

With football injuries when you see a player give a thumbs up it also is a signal that they are not experiencing any signs of paralysis
I've said it before in many places... that's the one circumstance where you really have to sit and hold your breath that everything is ok, that hit that Taylor Lewan took. *Any* time you see the helmet driven straight down onto the shoulder pads with no motion afterwards, it's a HUGE concern about spinal injuries. Luckily Taylor just had a temporary disruption, but any harder and you could have seen immediate permanent effects. That specific hit has paralyzed several players in the modern era.
14:35 Dave is exactly right. Many injuries in Football are the result of player fatigue; mixed with lack of effort or focus. Not always but, often enough.
Illegal hits that cause injury usually result in a fine and if its an intentional illegal hit, they get suspended or ejected from the game plus the fine. And of course a yardage penalty is applied to that play.
I find it funny that when someone gets hospitalized, only thing ref can say is "15 yard penalty, 1st down"

A lot of the subtle ones where it may seem like there wasn’t a lot of impact is spinal cord inversion. Head gets pressed directly down and the impact compresses the spine all the way down to the tail bone. It’s one of the most dangerous injuries and has ended many careers. That’s why they are taught to tackle in a very specific way to avoid mainly that injury. If your head goes straight down it’s like being crushed like a soda can.
I've noticed that British people say "on the floor" even when they're outdoors. In the US, we'd call that "on the ground."

Having a relative in the NFL, I can concur, the uniforms mean nothing. They give their entire bodies and respect that sacrifice.

Anytime a player is hurt on any side of the ball the players from each team show respect to each other. Because any time it could be career ending.
4:35, Momentum cannot be just "stopped" magically when you are racing towards your opponent target at full speed and at higher Athletic speed. Any American who played defense Football in High School , College or Professional knows.
There is a thing called a stinger. It's when the head is hit in a certain way that makes the whole body go numb. So some of these where it looks like they are barely hit but can't move. It is like they get a shock through the nervous system. They say it's very painful.
The problem with what you suggest about losing a player is that at the speed this game is played is that it leaves an uncovered player in which would lead to more injury's because as in defense it leaves an free shot at the Quarterback
@17:50 the guy who walks out with the light blue sleeves, headset and clipboard is the titans head coach. Only coach I have every seen that will go out onto the field and check on his guy every single time one goes down. If someone twists an ankle and can still walk off he won't but if anyone is down for more than a couple seconds he is out their checking on them
Coach Mike Vrabel. Loved to hate him when my Colts played against him and the Patriots (Teddy Bruschi too). The only two patriot players that I ever liked that wasn't Tom Brady.

@@A_Name_ Not so much these days, but recently (from 2001-2018) yes. Largely due to the Manning-Brady rivalry. Every time the Pats and Colts hooked up it was must see television. The Patriots usually got the better of Manning and the Colts, but we had our moments too. Of course none being bigger than the 2006 AFC championship game where Indy came back 21 points down to win and go on to its first super bowl. Incredible game and an incredible rivalry between the two best QBs in the league at that time. I don't know if we'll ever see anything quite like it again.

You have to consider how fast both the offense and defense are moving, and how strong they are. If you go in for a safe gentle tackle, you're going to get run over
A lot of times they dont mean to hit in the head or knees, etc, it just happens real fast and the ball carrier isnt where they expected
What you've gotta consider with most of these is the runner often lowers their head to meet the contact so now despite the tackler aiming for the mid section the runner lowers his head into the strike zone causing themselves to get hit in the head and the tackler gets penalized
Another issue is that the soil on gridiron fields is formulated to be firmer than most other playfields and the grass cut shorter. This is due to the weight of players and the "cuts" (jinks) while running. This was one of the issues on US teams going to the UK to play exhibition games. The field soil is a softer mix and the grass longer. much more easy for players to "cut" a quick turn while running and have the ground slip out from under them causing knee, ankle and hip joint injuries.
The trade-off is, when your head gets hammered into the ground...
Was listening to your evaluation of the first hit and wanted to correct one thing y'all said about lowering the head and not getting hit with your head back. Your head back is exactly how you want to hit. Your neck and spine are strong and handle the shock best in that position. It's extremely weak when your head gets lowered. Dropping your head is how you wind up in a wheelchair. Sorry played and coached for years and drilling Into young players to not drop the head still comes out.
Keep in mind, these are the "scary hits of 2021" not hardest.
A lot of neck injuries. If they get carted off like that and give a thumbs up, a lot of people are just happy they have movement in their arms. You will hear the announcers breath a sigh of relief and mention when a player moves their legs after hits like some of these... You know its bad when not being paralyzed is a victory of sorts
You think it's a tough sport now you should look into what it was like in its early days. There were multiple deaths in a season. The rules were different at the time. It got so bad the Teddy Roosevelt had to step in to save the game, and he helped introduce the forward pass, along with several other rule changes, to make the game safer rather than letting it get banned. Real interesting history in the game.
So glad you made this point. To top is off, they didn't even wear helmets -- just leather head coverings.

The way American football strategy works, if one of the sides played a man down on field as punishment, for any period of time, it would essentially be game over. It would decrease the entertainment value which is of course the opposite of what the league or the fans want

@@lexzone-six9912 Take the fastest player to fill either side if you lose a CB. Basically keep the empty position close to the line so there are more people to tackle. It means there's a chance a RB or QB could break out for big play but that's better than allowing a bomb TD!
In the NFL you have to have 11 players on the field. When one player comes off the field, another player comes on.
You gotta remember when you’re playing football you’re running at 100% so it’s almost impossible to pull back from hitting someone especially when you’re in pass coverage, you have no idea whether he’s going to catch the ball or not and it all happens so fast you only have a couple seconds to react. You always have to follow through on a hit when a receiver is gonna for the ball because if you don’t and he catches it then it’s on you
As a hockey guy these are rough to watch. Everyone’s going full steam, but as hard as ice is, as long as you’re not smashing a board it’s slippery and more forgiving. You hit the grass or turf full speed, head, shoulder or face mask first you stick to that shit and get dragged with massive dudes on top of you. Friction is a mother fucker.
You guys were talking about the video you did about NFL greatest hits, and talking about the hits in this video. The one that always comes to mind for me is the time that Lawrence Taylor broke Joe Thiesmann's thigh on MNF 18NOV1985. That was one scary hit, even LT knew he had hurt Joe bad...

The scariest injury I've seen live was Ryan Shazier. He played linebacker for the Steelers and he made a fairly routine tackle in a game against the Bengals, but seriously damaged his spine and it ended his career. He had to relearn to walk and everything. I believe he was only like 24. Absolutely horrific.
Didn't Shazier often tackle while leading with his helmet?
They are so big, fast and powerful that any impact might look like a small impact. But if you have ever been hit by a 280 pound athlete, it feels like a minor car accident
One thing to look for after a massive NFL hit where it appears that downed player is knocked unconscious for a few moments is their hands. If their hands ball up like fists and wrists are not straight, likely a concussion.
14:40 That is very true Dave. I watched guys that were scared of the action (I was one of them in my freshman year) and they would get injured. I never did go down but you have to be careful before going into the last year before going to the NFL. You have to play smart but if you are too timid, you can be more likely to get an injury. I guess it would be not playing with reckless abandon but play hard. 27:33 The average career in the NFL is about 3 years but it is a misleading stat. Many guys are cut after a few games & many more never get past their rookie year. They just aren't good enough. There are of course, career ending injuries but it is a surprisingly low number. Hi guys. A great many of these injuries end up being varying degrees of stingers. You get the neck or head turned or twisted and you get a pinched nerve. Soooo painful. They do not take a man off and play short handed. That would be penalizing an entire team for the dirty play of one man. They will depending on severity or perceived intention, eject a player from the game. Also certain fouls will be automatic ejection, and then the NFL will review the video and decide if it requires further actions in the form of fines or suspensions for the player involved. The average career is 3.3 years but that is skewed by the number of guys who get a chance to play and are let go after or even during their 1st season.
@19:15 he was out immediately. I mean think about this, his head and neck compressed immediately as soon as he made contact, so it was more of a spine being compressed more than it was a knockout due to hard hit.
The guys that are carted off tend to deal with neck/spinal trauma and they take no risks. Even if they aren't hurt in the end, once they exhibit any symptoms of damage, they strap them down and secure their heads to the board so there is no movement. They remove their facemasks so they can help them breath if their lungs stop working due to brain function. They go get scanned to find out if they have a concussion or are perfectly fine, but they take zero chances when it is head/neck injuries.
Number 52 for Seattle didn't have a serious injury thankfully. I was watching the game and it took a long time to get him on the cart. I thought he might have a serious neck injury.

Yeah, if it is an illegal hit, they get a 15 yard penalty (and an automatic first down if it is a penalty on the defense). This is a big deal on a drive. In the NFL it is reviewed later and they often get a big financial penalty in a fine. In college football, it is also video reviewed on the spot, and if they determine it was intentional (called "targeting") they are kicked out of the game and suspended a full game (into the next game). But you are right, the player can be replaced on the field, but they can't use his services which can or can't be a big deal depending on how important the disqualified player is.
Your absolutely right that the here comes the boom video is the flashy stuff but this is the stuff that happens week in and week out. People falling on you in odd ways or you just landing wrong leads to for more injuries than some nut case trying to take your head off(still not good but not as frequently).

I believe that average running back's career is 3 years. I'm pretty sure that doesn't extend to every position in the game, though. Running backs get run into the ground and replaced quickly, unless they're superstars AND can stay healthy.
I would suggests watching some of these NFL players workouts as another interesting way to get an idea of what kinds of athletes these men are

Injured players requiring treatment must leave the field for attention. Even if he is able to return to the field, the injured player must sit out the next down. The team is not charged a timeout unless the play is in the final two minutes prior to halftime or within the final two minutes of the game. This exception is part of the rule in order to keep teams from faking injuries to buy more time to amend their play plans.
Really egregious hits can get you throw out of the game, suspended, and/or fined a lot of money personally. They put the additional penalty on the player more than the team in a sense. Like you said though most of the time it's not really intentional. Most people are not trying to seriously injure others.

We had kid die here in Baltimore recently. The 17 year old was tackled wrong at the local high school football championships. He fell into a coma and never woke up. It was an awful tragedy.
You gotta keep in mind how massive these guys are, too. If you're 6'6 and 300 lbs, just falling down could break a bone.

The second and third were more scarry because they were quarterbacks who are not normally hit at all maybe a couple times per game, but those were heavy hits
Some of these hits don't look too rough, but some of this artificial turf is applied over concrete or asphalt, with a minor underlayment on top of that. Combine that with the weight of a 300# guy driving your head into the ground. Helmet or not, it will do damage.
It’s also very hard for them to stop. Imagine a human freight train at full speed and not enough space in between you and your target.
It's kind of ponderous how most NFL American Athletete Players have either United Kingdom 🇬🇧, Scottish 🏴 or Irish 🇮🇪 Surnames.

I used to play strong safety, basically a linebacker, my mission was to wreck anyone trying to come over the middle. I don’t think you’ve discussed “covering the flats” the areas outside the linemen where the receivers take off from. You have to account for what happens after the snap and they take off.
Remember, in the NFL off ball tackles and hits happen. A lot of times you're focused on the ball carrier and can miss some dude getting smoked by a fucking freight train.

In the NFL, rookies have it the hardest because they have to prove themselves every down or they could get cut or sent to the practice squad.

Getting a stinger isn't fun. I've had some bad ones from playing. To this day my neck will tweak out while driving. It sucks.
Give the Kevin Ware injury a look one day. Poor kid broke his leg, and it was so bad that the entire arena reacted like someone died. The bone pierced the skin on his broken leg, so hopefully you find a less graphic version of the video.
In American sports you never go down a player permanently. You can always bring another in to replace an ejected player. They will receive fines for it though so there's some additional punishment.

Hockey injuries are more cuts than concussions but its it's great video and will show you the dangers of our sport

I’m a chiefs fan and mahomes down is the end of our world lol. But I remember watching Trent green get knocked out during a game and when they woke him up they asked him where he was. He said Tuesday. So they let him sit out a play and he went back in lol

With these short clips, you don’t actually get to see members from other teams, help or assisting, or getting help for someone that is down. They don’t realize that someone is actually hurt because it’s part of the game to be on the ground. But, once they realize they all take it very seriously, these clips don’t show that part.

Playing with a guy down in American Football would be a way way bigger advantage than it is in English futbol. Every play in american football is 11v11. You don't have 11 forwards attacking 11 defenders in English futbol so you can afford to be down a striker or defender. If you take a defender out of an NFL drive there will basically be one guy free every play and it would be completely one sided

If a player is deemed to have intentionally hit another player in the head it is called "targeting" and there is a15 yard penalty and the player is ejected from the game
I always said that college football and the NFL as well as CFL, should punish the most severe penalties like ice hockey where the team that got fouled would have a Power Play because the opposing team would be down one man! That's the best way. The most you can be down is 2 players so even if there's another penalty during Power Play, a second player would go into a "penalty box". There's no guarantee that the team on Power Play would get a touch down so it would be a fair penalty.
The player with compound fracture, "The Frig" Chicago Bears. It was very nasty.
Almost every time you say "There's no need for that" they are trying to knock the ball loose. When we were growing up, it's just how the game was played. Nowadays, it's a penalty.
Titans injury around 19:00. I haven't looked into it but I don't think he was knocked out. I'm betting he heard a pop and felt pain upon his neck being compacted so he played it safe by not moving. In my job we're taught not to move if we suspect a spinal injury because it could cause irreversible damage - I'm sure football players are told the same.
It's easy to stay still when you're unconscious. He was out for a few minutes *but* did say in an interview that when he came to he knew he shouldn't move anyways.
23:00 they get ejected for helmet to helmet hits. But unlike European Football, they're allowed to have a replacement come in. So it remains 11 v 11.
The average is 3 years because there is always someone coming the next year looking to take your job and there have been instances where players that have played for longer never admit they are injured until contracts are signed due to it weakening their bargaining position and getting paid what they're worth. If they admit they're hurt the GM will say they're injury prone and use it to pay them HALF of what they should. And just like I said before, they know there's always someone coming next year for their job, so they have to play through injuries that would hospitalize normal people.
A big reason careers are short is because most players realize they don't have the talent to make a lot of money/be given a contract that really takes care of them. So they walk away/get cut, take what money they've made so far, and tell their agent that their playing days are behind them.
But some guys just love football and hang in there. A long snapper got a bad knee injury before his pro career started. He left football, got surgery, and figured his career was over. Than a team contacted him and asked if he was available. He said yes, joined the team after a passing a physical, and then started a 9 or 10 year career in the league.

@4:05 idk that I call that a late hit. Cause you have to think about the speed he’s moving, with also thinking that Adams is going to catch the ball as well. Like he has no time to react to stop the hit by the time Adams misses the ball. So it’s hard to call that a late hit or whatever Imo.

You’re not a player short. They always have back ups. They may be lacking in skill but that’s why they’re the backups.

On the last clip, Jets vs Pats, Wilson had probably already injured his knee a play or 2 before and this normal tackle finished the job of messing up his PCL. Just some context.
I played football from 4 yrs old to 20 years old,every hit is necessary, some are just unfortunate. I was a free safety I tried to make people never want to step on the field again when I hit them,that's your job I wanted to make them have to leave,make them not want to come back on the field

The size of the players and the speed of the modern NFL game will continue to result in these types of injuries. It is a sad part but it is just one part of the game that makes it so exciting to see and to hear in person. The players just keep getting bigger and faster too. Injuries are to be expected in my opinion.
I have seen statistics which show that Bill Burr is right. The average NFL career is just 3.3 years long and many, if not most, careers are ended by injuries.

Playing American football with a player down would be a guaranteed score for the other team, the depth of strategy behind the game would make that not a punishment, but a straight out forfeit of the game, you COULD NOT regardless of skill level win 10 v 11, it would be entirely impossible.
The way the penalties work are yardage, and several are automatic reset to first down.
Also the skill gap between NFL starters and 2nd string is sometimes VAST so losing a starter is pretty severe in some cases.
You will never see an NFL game with one team down a player. Both teams have a leaven men on the field for every single play. There is a yardage penalty and sometimes players are ejected from the game, a lot of them get fines they must pay. It’s all about yardage on the field though. Those penalties can be 15 yards though so that’s significant, that’s the advantage to being the victim team with a penalty you get a lot of yards.
Believe it or not, you're the average size of a linebacker in the NFL. Those are the guys on the defensive side that set up directly behind the guys on the line of scrimmage. Some of those guys in front of linebackers however are upwards of 6'7" and well over 300 pounds. That however are their training camp weights. Most of these guys have weight goals or clauses in their contracts that state they have to be a certain weight entering training camp. But they don't call these guys "big eaters" for nothing. Halfway through the season most of these big guys have put on 20 or so pounds.
You guys gotta remember some of these moves are illegal now due to concussion concerns.
I had a guy hit me once standing in and office lightly with an nfl helmet on and my head hurt after one hit.
Most of these you can't see are head or neck injuries. They always tell you hit with your shoulders. But guess where your head sits. Yep, right on top of your shoulders. I always think it's kind of weird when they say don't lead with your head. Kind of hard to tackle somebody going in ass first.
