    Just popped in to say massive thanks 🤗 My Ford Focus is a car near and dear to my heart and I make sure to take care of it. Your video helped me to replace reverse light today. I had to get rid of some of the corrosion before it started working. As a woman I have to say being interested in the car you drive got me to a point in which I don't pay for certain tiny and some not so tiny repairs, light replacements etc. And it's very rewarding being able to fix things on your own.

      I'm really pleased to hear that, the main aim of these videos is to empower people to have a crack. This has made my day :)

    My mk2 suffers with this issue too, actually caused an mot fail for a previous owner. Good info here.

    I believe aesthetics and functionality were chosen over visibility and reliability with the reversing light :p If you need to reverse down a dark driveway into a narrow garage (like I have to, every day) or park close to a curb at night, it actually illuminates the area you see through the side mirror pretty well. (Mine is on the RH side 'cause it's LHD)

    • @usuallyfixingtinkering
      @usuallyfixingtinkering  ปีที่แล้ว

      That is a great point, I myself have used that reverse light in dark situations it's really useful, it's just not a brilliant place functionality-wise as a reverse light.

    If you have a multimeter, out it on continuity mode ( with the buzzer), an d test the bulb holder. If the bulb and the holder are fine, its probably the reverse light switch which is also a common fault at this age. Cheap and easy fix at £15 and a 22mm spanner .

    • @usuallyfixingtinkering
      @usuallyfixingtinkering  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      On my car being the automatic, the switch is park of the inhibitor set-up so slightly different but you are correct!

    We have a 2002 Focus 1.8 Tdci (115) in silver with just 53000 (we have owned it from new) 10 years ago we took it over to Spain and re registered it there for a new life. Really the only thing that failed in that time was the reversing light, but as Spain don’t suffer from rain 😂 it was the switch not the bulb holder. This beautiful old girl is still a joy to drive. Ps In Spain the reversing light IS part of the Mot (ITV)

    • @usuallyfixingtinkering
      @usuallyfixingtinkering  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      gosh the switch!!! that is a rare fault indeed. I can imagine the underside being in really good condition. If I ever moved abroad all my cars are coming with me :)
      Wow and in the UK pre-2009 cars don't need a working reverse light?!

    • @adriancopestake887
      @adriancopestake887 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The paintwork is all original…. The rear subframe and parts have some rust that was because of the first years in the UK before it came to Spain. I intend to address this with a good clean and repaint.
      The front struts have some rust too

      Your dashboard has a bad soldered joint. You'll need to send it off to ecu testing to repair. Not too expensive but you'll be without the cluster for a few days.

    Hey, here I am again.
    I fixed the lights inside the dashboard, thanx for the help again.
    Next problem, reverse light won't work.
    I checked the connection and it works, bypassed the switch on the gearbox via the accu and an cable.
    Also checked the switch through bypassing and no light so it's not the switch in the gearbox.
    Only thing I can think of is that + cable broke.
    I checked at the end with an multimeter and the voltage is jumping from 4.5V to + 25V and everywhere in between.
    Is it an broken cable or do you think it's something else?
    Thanks again!

    • @usuallyfixingtinkering

      that sounds like a broken wire to the reverse light, check where it goes from the connector into the boot

    A faulty reverse light is not an MOT fail on MK1 Focuses. Only vehicles first used from 1 September 2009 are tested and this rule didn't come into force until the MOT changes in 2018.
    A faulty fog light is an MOT fail. Not only must the light itself work but also the "tell-tale" indicator near the light switch.

    • @usuallyfixingtinkering
      @usuallyfixingtinkering  ปีที่แล้ว

      That is correct for reverse light side of things, hence why I was driving round with a broken one for years, wasn't even on the advisory for some reason!

      @@usuallyfixingtinkering Yes I always thought the reverse light (in fact every light) was tested. Before every MOT I check the lights, wipers and horn. I once failed on a number plate light - I didn't realise there are 2 of them, the glow looked good to me!
      Recent MOT my reverse was out. Panic on the morning but I fitted a new one from a factor. Tester told me it wasn't needed anyway due to age of car!

      @@paulridley3184 Exactly. It's a left hand drive, driving on the continent... So yeah, that must be why. The reverse light is on the side-of-the-road side. :-)

  • @pauldoherty8432
    @pauldoherty8432 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Why did you bin the rear arch liners ?

    • @usuallyfixingtinkering
      @usuallyfixingtinkering  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      They cause signifcant structural rot in the arches. They're a carpet material that takes days to dry out after a drive in the wet. The moisture is just sitting against the arch lip and back of the arch and rusts them out. I'd recommend removing them and undersealing/waxyoyl the arches instead. Best thing I ever did with no rust whatsoever since!
